73. He Proposes To You On Stage
I've been dating the singer and songwriter, Shawn Mendes, for a little over two and a half years, and they've been the best two and a half of my life. Shawn is currently on tour, but he's playing a concert in Boston tonight, which means that we get to be together again. Shawn and I met at a Dunkin Donuts in Boston, and we live together in Massachusetts together.
"He's been missing you a lot lately." Andrew Gertler, Shawn's manager, said to me. My parents and brother were right behind me.
"I've been missing him a lot lately too. The house seems so lonely without him. He knows that I'm coming, he just thinks that I'm coming later." I said. Andrew nodded and soon he knocked on Shawn's dressing room door. Shawn opened the door and when he saw me his eyes widened and his jaw dropped.
"Babe!" He yelled as he scooped me up into his arms.
"Hi!" I said as I laughed while he spun me around a little. He then set me down and held my face in his big hands.
"What are you doing here? I thought that you weren't going to be here until later." He asked and said.
"Why? Do you want me to leave and come back later?" I teasingly asked. He pulled me in for a hug.
"No! Stay! Oh my gosh, I've missed you so much darling." Shawn said. I rubbed his back a little.
"I've missed you so much too baby. I just had to come see you sooner than we had planned. You don't mind, do you?" I asked as I looked up at him. He shook his head.
"No, of course not." He said. He then put his lips on mine. I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my tummy, and I felt sparks shoot through my body like fireworks.
"Okay, okay, let the girl breathe." Andrew said. Shawn and I pulled away and smiled at each other, our faces red from embarrassment.
"Look, my parents and Thomas are here." I said. Shawn gave them hugs.
"Hey, how are you guys?" Shawn asked.
"Good, how are you?" My mom asked.
"Well I'm a hell of a lot better now that my girl is here. Babe, come into my dressing room, there are some people here that you haven't seen in a while." He said as he gently grabbed my hand. As our hands touched, I felt electricity spark through me, yet I felt safe and warm at the same time.
"Can they come in too?" I asked as I pointed at my family.
"Of course." Shawn said, and then we all went into his dressing room. My jaw dropped.
"Oh my gosh I don't know who to hug first!" I said as I looked at Shawn's parents, Karen and Manny, and his sister, Aaliyah.
"Me!" Aaliyah said and we hugged.
"Hi darling, how are you?" Karen asked when we hugged.
"I'm good! How are you guys?" I asked.
"We're good." Manny said. The last time my family had seen Shawn's was when his family came down to see the house that we bought together.
"Good." Karen said.
"Honey, can I talk to you for a second please?" Shawn asked.
"Yeah." I said. He held my hand and looked at our families.
"We'll be right back." He said.
"Okay." Everyone said. We stepped into the hallway and Shawn shut the door so no one could hear us.
"Everything okay honey?" I asked. Shawn nodded.
"Yeah. Um, I was thinking, what do you think of getting this cleaned?" Shawn asked as he held up my hand to show me the promise ring that I was wearing. He gave it to me the day after we said I love you to each other for the first time.
"I don't know..." I said.
"Please honey? Don't you want it to be all nice and sparkly again?" He asked. His fingers were already on the ring, ready to take it off when I said yes. I sighed.
"Okay, but I can't look while you do it." I said.
"Okay darling, you don't have to look." He said. I looked away and closed my eyes as I felt him take the ring off.
"I don't like this." I said.
"I know honey. It's off. Come on, let's go back in my dressing room." He said as he put the ring in his pocket. I nodded and we went back in his dressing room.
"I don't like this. I don't like this. I feel naked without it or something. I've been wearing that ring for two years." I said. Shawn pulled me close to him.
"I know baby girl, but we'll get it all nice and clean and sparkly. It's going to look as good as new." Shawn said. I buried my face in his chest and sighed.
"Okay." I said. He rubbed my back a little.
"Are you guys all going to be on the stage tonight?" Shawn asked everyone. I nodded my head against his chest.
"Yes." Everyone said.
"Okay, good. You okay baby?" Shawn asked. I looked at him.
"Will we get it cleaned soon? Like, as soon as possible?" I asked. Shawn nodded and brushed some hair out of my face.
"Of course we will darling, I promise." He said. I nodded.
"It's just a ring Y/n." Thomas, my brother, said. I looked at him.
"It's not just a ring. He gave it to me the day after we said I love you to each other for the first time and I've been wearing it for a little over two years." I said and then looked at Shawn again. He was rubbing my back, trying to keep me calm, and he rested his forehead against mine.
"I love you." He said.
"I love you too." I said. After a little bit, it was time for him to go on stage. I stood with my family and Shawn's as we watched him perform, and Aaliyah and I danced together a little bit. One of the songs ended, and I saw Shawn grab an acoustic guitar and then go back to the microphone. Jake, Shawn's security guard, put a chair on the stage. Huh?
"So, tonight not only is my amazing girlfriend here, but so is her family and my family. As you guys can tell from my Instagram posts about her, I love my girlfriend a lot, like, I love her an infinite amount. I know that she doesn't like being in front of a lot of people, but I would love to bring her on stage, so I'm going to go get her." Shawn said. My eyes widened as he walked towards me. He held his hand out for me to take and I did.
"What are you doing?" I asked. The crowd cheered louder when they saw me.
"I have a surprise for you." He said.
"What is it?" I asked. He smiled.
"Take a seat babe." He said as he pointed at the chair. I did and he went to the microphone. "So, my amazing girlfriend just asked me what I'm doing. Well, my love, I'm going to sing a couple of songs to you. Neither of them are mine by the way." He said. He then began to sing Little Things by One Direction, his eyes never leaving mine. The song ended.
"Beautiful!" I yelled and he must have read my lips because he smiled. He then took a deep breath.
"Ready for this next song honey?" He asked. I nodded and at first I didn't recognize the song, but when I realized that he was singing Marry Me by Train, my eyes widened. It wasn't' until later, when I saw a video, that I found out that instead of having a close up of him on the big screen of him, pictures and videos of us were being shown.
"Oh my gosh." I said. Was he about to propose? Was that why he had me take off the promise ring? It made sense... right?
"Together can never be close enough for me / Feel like I am close enough to you / You wear white and I'll wear out the words I love you / And you're beautiful / Now that the wait is over / And love and has finally shown her my way / Marry me / Today and every day / Marry me / If I ever get the nerve to say hello in this cafe / Say you will / Mm-hmm / Say you will / Mm-hmm" Shawn sang. Soon, the song came to an end. He gave the guitar to Zubin, got something from him, and then walked over to me.
"Oh my gosh." I said as he waved for me to stand up. He smiled at me, gave me a quick kiss, and then began to talk into the microphone.
"Y/n Y/m/n Y/l/n, you're my best friend, my soulmate, the love of my life, my everything. You're the sweetest, nicest, most loving, caring, generous person I know. I love every single thing about you. You know me better than anyone else, and I know you better than anyone else. We have a house together, and I want to live there with you forever. I love you so much. So, with all of that said..." Shawn said as he pulled out a box and got down on one knee. My hands went to my mouth and tears formed in my eyes.
"Oh my gosh." I said again.
"Will you marry me?" He asked. I took my hands away from my mouth and nodded.
"Yes! Yes of course!" I said. He smiled, tucked the microphone into his arm, and took out the most beautiful ring. He put it on me. It was a perfect fit. He then stood up and kissed me. I could barely hear the cheering of the crowd. I was too busy being in love with my now fiancé. We pulled away and smiled at each other. He removed the microphone from his arm, and as he put his arm around my waist, he looked at the crowd.
"We're engaged!" He said and the crowd cheered. He then looked at me again.
"I love you." I said. He kissed me.
"I love you too. Do you want to dance with me?" He asked, the microphone away from his mouth but I could hear him.
"Don't you have a concert to do?" I asked with a giggle. He chuckled.
"Yes, but I want to dance with the woman that I'm going to marry." He said.
"Oh my gosh we're getting married! Yes, let's dance together honey." I said. He smiled and then put his lips to the microphone.
"Will my wonderful engineers play that song for me?" He asked. He put the microphone back on the stand and walked over to me as Golden Hour by Kacey Musgraves started to play. I smiled and he put one hand on my waist, his other hand held mine, and my other hand was on his shoulder. We had danced to this song a million times, whether it was in the recording studio, or in our kitchen.
"I love you." I said. Shawn's smile widened.
"I love you too baby. Now do you understand why I had you take off your promise ring?" Shawn asked. I nodded.
"Yes. Can we still get it cleaned?" I asked. He nodded and then twirled me, and then pulled me back to him.
"Of course we can darling. Did you mind the way that I proposed?" He asked. I shook my head.
"No. It was absolutely perfect my love." I said. He smiled and wrapped both arms around my waist. I smiled and wrapped both of my arms around his shoulders.
"The last time we danced to this, we were dancing in our kitchen as boyfriend and girlfriend." Shawn said. I nodded.
"Yup, and now we're dancing to it on stage as an engaged couple." I said. Shawn smiled and twirled me. We danced around some more.
"Thank you for saying yes." He said.
"Of course! You know that I love you more than anything. Thank you for asking me to marry you." I said.
"Of course baby. There's no one else I would rather marry and spend the rest of my life with." He said.
"There better not be!" I said and he threw his head back with laughter.
"Holy crap I'm in love with you." He said.
"That's good because I'm in love with you too. The song is about to end." I said.
"I'll ask them to play it one more time." He said. I smiled.
"Thank you baby." I said.
"Anything for you darling." He said. I smiled. The song came to an end and he went back to the microphone. "So, typically when Y/n and I dance to that song, which is Golden Hour by Kacey Musgraves, it's in our kitchen. I'm really happy right now because I get to marry my best friend, oh my gosh. Anyways, will my engineers play that song for my fiancé and I just one more time?" He asked and the song played again.
"Thank you." I said as we started to dance to it again.
"You're welcome honey." He said.
"What if I walked down the aisle to the instrumental to A Thousand Years by Christina Perri?" I asked.
"That would be wonderful. Wait, did you know that I was going to propose?" He asked. I shook my head.
"No." I said.
"How did you come up with that idea so quickly?" He asked as we danced. I smiled and laughed.
"I've had that idea for a while." I said. He smiled.
"I can't wait to marry you babe. You're my everything." He said as he picked me up and spun me around a little. He then set me down and we danced some more.
"You're my everything too baby. Oh my gosh I get to marry my best friend!" I said.
"Don't forget that I get to marry my best friend too!" He said and I laughed.
"The song is about to end. I'll see you in a little bit?" I asked.
"Wait, stay on stage for another minute or two after the song ends." He said.
"Why? What do you have up your sleeve?" I asked. He smirked.
"You'll see." He said.
"Oh gosh." I said and he laughed. The song came to an end and he held my hand as he walked back over to the microphone.
"So, Y/n, my sweet girl, not only are my parents and sister and your parents and brother here, but we have some more loved ones out in the crowd." He said. He then began listing everyone that was in the crowd: friends, current co-workers, former co-workers, family members, even my family that lives in the south had come up to watch him propose.
"Oh my gosh." I said. Shawn chuckled and pulled me in for a hug.
"Did you really think that I wouldn't invite everyone to watch us get engaged?" He asked.
"Shawn Mendes, you never cease to amaze me." I said, and since Shawn had pulled me so close to him, the microphone caught what I said and the crowd cheered some more. Shawn smiled at me and kissed me.
"I love you. I'll see you in a little bit." He said.
"Okay, I love you too." I said. He gave me another kiss and then walked me to where the stairs were and watched me walk off stage. My family and his family hugged me. I then heard Shawn talk into the microphone.
"Holy crap I'm engaged to my best friend. Oh my gosh this is amazing." He said. I laughed and smiled. After the show, he came over to me and spun me around. I laughed and he set me down so he could hug our families.
"Congratulations!" Everyone said to us and we thanked them. Soon, we went home. Shawn and I walked in the front and Shawn set his bags down.
"It feels good to be home. By the way, our family and some of our friends are coming over tomorrow. I think my mom's going to get a cake that says congratulations." He said.
"What? The house isn't clean enough." I said as I began to walk away so I could clean the house. Shawn pulled me back to him.
"Honey, they're not coming over until noon tomorrow. It's late, let's head to bed now." Shawn said. I sighed and looked at the house.
"But it needs to be cleaned. Dammit, I knew I should've cleaned before you got home." I said. Shawn put his hand to my cheek.
"Everything is fine, my love. The house looks fine. We'll make it spotless tomorrow if you want. For right now, should we post photos from our engagement?" Shawn asked.
"But we don't have any pictures from you proposing to me yet." I said. Shawn smiled.
"Josiah took pictures and he already emailed them to us." He said. I smiled and gave Shawn a kiss.
"Okay." I said. He held my hand and we walked over to the couch so we could look at the photos and then decide which ones we should post.
"I like this one a lot. Should I post this one?" Shawn asked as he pointed at the photo of him down on one knee. I smiled.
"Yeah. I think that I want to post that one and one of us kissing after you put the ring on me." I said. Shawn nodded.
"Okay baby. Oh look, there's photos of us dancing!" Shawn said. I smiled.
"I love it!" I said.
"Conner took a video of the proposal by the way. Did you notice what was going on behind me as I was singing to you?" Shawn asked. I shook my head.
"No. I was too busy looking at your handsome face and wondering if you were about to propose." I said and Shawn chuckled. He got his laptop and we watched the video of him singing to me and then proposing to me. That was when I saw that there were pictures and videos of us on the screen behind him.
I watched the videos that had been playing behind us. I smiled as I saw the videos of me running and jumping into Shawn's arms, videos of Shawn and I dancing, whether it was in our home, in the studio, or anywhere. Pictures of us were shown. I continued to smile as I looked at the picture of me kissing Shawn's cheek, followed by a video of me repeatedly kissing his cheek, and him kissing my cheek, as I sat on his lap. The video that Connor took was soon over and I smiled at Shawn.
"Did you like the videos and pictures that I chose?" He asked. I nodded and wiped away some happy tears.
"I loved them. I love you so much Shawn." I said.
"I love you too baby. Why are you crying right now?" He asked as he used the pad of his thumb to wipe away some tears.
"I'm just really happy. My best friend asked me to marry him and that's amazing." I said. Shawn kissed me.
"I love you." He said.
"I love you too." I said.
"Should I make the post now?" He asked. I nodded and smiled at him.
"Yeah." I said. Soon, I got a notification that he had posted, and I looked at it. Sure enough, he had posted the picture of him down on one knee. I read the caption.
"My new favorite show. I asked my best friend to marry me tonight, and she said yes! I love you so much Y/n Y/l/n. I can't wait to call you Mrs. Y/n Mendes." Shawn wrote. I smiled and posted the pictures of him down on one knee, then him putting the ring on me, and then the picture of us kissing as an engaged couple for the first time. I wrote my caption.
"Almost three years ago, I saw Shawn in concert. The next day, we met and went on our first date. Four months later he asked me to be his girlfriend. Tonight, he brought me on stage at his concert and asked me to marry him, and of course I said yes! I love you so much Shawn, and I can't wait until we're husband and wife. I'll love you forever baby." I wrote. Shawn liked the post and smiled at me.
"Ready for bed?" He asked as he stood up and held out his hand. I nodded.
"Yeah. I don't know if I'll be able to fall asleep since I'm so excited, but I can try." I said and Shawn chuckled.
"Do you want me to rub your back and sing to you? Will that help you fall asleep?" He asked as we went into our bedroom. I nodded.
"Yeah. I love you Shawn." I said as we got under the covers.
"I love you too Y/n. When should we start planning the wedding?" Shawn asked as he pulled me close to him. I had missed falling asleep in his arms.
"I don't know. Maybe we should set a date first and then go from there. Does that sound okay to you baby?" I asked.
"That sounds wonderful. Should we talk about this more tomorrow?" He asked. I nodded and closed my eyes.
"Yeah. I'm tired." I said.
"Okay baby. Good night. I love you." He said. I smiled and held him close to me and he did the same thing to me.
"Good night. I love you too." I said, and with that, we fell asleep. I'm so grateful for Shawn and I'm so happy that we're going to get married.
