53. You Meet His Friends
A/n: Explicit language in this one! Also, I'm sure that Matt isn't a dick, but I kind of made him one in the imagine for a bit just to spice up the story. Anyways, please enjoy this imagine! Okay, without further ado, let's begin!
I felt nervous as I sat on my boyfriend's couch in Toronto. I've been dating the singer and songwriter Shawn Mendes for three months now. We just started to say I love you to each other yesterday after I was encouraged by Justin Timberlake to tell Shawn how I feel, and the day before that, I met his parents and sister. Today, I'm meeting his friends. I put on a minimal amount of makeup, just some eyeliner, mascara, and eye shadow. I put on white jeans and a blue t-shirt (A/n: outfit is in picture above!). I kept bouncing my foot. Shawn came up to me and sat down next to me as we waited for his friends.
"Don't be nervous honey. They're going to love you. Not as much as I do, but still, they'll love you." Shawn said. I nodded and let out a shaky breath.
"Okay." I said. Soon, there was a knock at the door. Shawn stood up and got the door. I stood up too.
"Hey guys, come on in." Shawn said. I recognized each of his friends and smiled as best as I could. I wanted to make a good first impression on them.
"Hey!" They all said as they bro hugged Shawn. They then all looked at me.
"So, guys, this is my lovely and amazing girlfriend, Y/n Y/l/n. Babe, this is Jon, Geoff, Matt, and you've already met Brian." Shawn said.
"You've already met her?" Jon asked Brian. Brian nodded.
"Yeah dude, I picked her up from the airport." Brian said.
"Hi, nice to meet you guys." I said. They smiled at me.
"Nice to meet you too." They all said. Shawn smiled.
"Should we get some beers out and then we can all hangout?" Shawn asked. The boys nodded.
"Definitely." Jon and Matt said.
"Absolutely." Brian and Geoff said.
"Do you need help with anything babe?" I asked. Shawn smiled at me.
"No, but you can still come in the kitchen with me if you'd like." He said. I nodded.
"Okay." I said. I then followed him into his kitchen.
"So how are you doing so far?" Shawn asked once we got in the kitchen. He grabbed three beers and I grabbed two. Shawn knows that I don't like alcohol, so he didn't grab one for me, and I didn't grab one for myself either.
"I think I'm good. I can just stick by your side, right?" I asked. Shawn nodded.
"Of course baby. You'll sit right beside me. Here, come give me a kiss darling." Shawn said. I smiled and our lips met. I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my tummy, and I felt sparks shoot throughout my body like fireworks.
"Oh, sorry, didn't realize I was interrupting something." Someone said. I turned around, knowing that my face was red from embarrassment, and saw Jon.
"It's okay." Shawn said and I nodded in agreement. We then went into the living room, where everyone was. Shawn handed out the beers, and I had grabbed myself a water. I sat next to Shawn and he put his arm around my shoulders. Matt gave me a funny look, and I suddenly felt uncomfortable.
"Um, is everything okay Matt?" I asked.
"Oh, sorry, I just... why aren't you having a beer? Are you and Shawn pregnant? Oh my gosh that explains it!" Matt said as he then began to look at the rest of the boys.
"That explains what?" Shawn asked.
"Come on Shawn. She's not drinking alcohol, and no offence, but she has a bit of a stomach. You got her pregnant, didn't you?" Matt asked. I've always been insecure about my weight.
"Dude, what the fuck?" Shawn asked. I sat up straighter.
"I'm not pregnant, I just don't like alcohol." I said.
"Matt you don't fucking say shit like that. What are you even talking about saying she has a bit of a stomach? She doesn't." Shawn said. I put my hand on his leg and looked at him. He looked at me and his face softened.
"It's okay." I said. He kissed the side of my head.
"I love you so fucking much." He whispered in my ear. I smiled.
"I love you so fucking much too." I said.
"I'm sorry for what I said Y/n." Matt said. I nodded.
"Thank you for apologizing." I said.
"Wait, you're not going to say it's okay? That's what people typically say in response to an apology." Matt asked and said.
"My best friend taught me that if someone says something, or if someone does something that's not okay, if they apologize, don't lie and say that it's okay when it's not. What you said wasn't okay, so I didn't say that it's okay. My weight is something that I've always been insecure about, so to hear what you said didn't make me feel good. There's no way that I'm pregnant. I just don't like alcohol." I said. Matt nodded and then paused.
"Wait, what do you mean that there's no way that you're pregnant? Aren't you and Shawn doing it?" Matt asked.
"Not that it's any of your business, but I'm waiting for marriage before I have sex because I want to make sure that I'm with the right guy first and that I'm not going to regret it." I said. Matt nodded again.
"Y/n, I have to tell you, Shawn talks about you constantly." Jon said. I smiled and blushed.
"Brian told me that when he picked me up at the airport. Babe do you really talk about me that much?" I asked as I looked at Shawn. His face was red and he nodded.
"Yeah. Well think about it, how could I not be talking about you all of the time? I'm dating the most beautiful girl in the world that I'm so beyond in love with and who's so beyond in love with me." Shawn said. I smiled and nodded.
"I really am so beyond in love with you." I said. Shawn kissed the side of my head again.
"You guys caused quite the stir on Instagram and in the media the other day." Geoff said.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Well, you guys left a restaurant holding hands. Now people want to know if you guys are dating or not." Geoff said as he sat up a bit more.
"Well she's not ready to go public yet so her and I are going to keep our relationship a secret until she's ready. I trust that you guys won't tell anyone either. The reason why we were holding hands was because we had been told that the paparazzi were outside and I told her that I didn't want her drifting away from me so I told her to hold my hand." Shawn explained and I nodded.
"Y/n, why aren't you ready to go public with Shawn yet? I mean, you guys say I love you to each other, you're meeting his friends and you've met his family. Are you ashamed to be his girlfriend or something?" Matt asked. I frowned as I looked at him.
"You're just on a roll tonight, aren't you?" I asked as I felt a surge of confidence.
"What? What do you mean?" Matt asked.
"With these comments and questions that aren't all that nice and appropriate. I am in no way, shape, or form, ashamed that Shawn's my boyfriend. I love the fact that he's my boyfriend. He's such an amazing human being. I'm not ready to go public because I know that I'm going to get hate and I'm not ready for that yet. I'm just not ready to see comments about my weight and things like that." I said, referencing to what he had said about me having a stomach earlier. Matt nodded.
"Oh. Okay. When will you be ready to go public?" Matt asked.
"I don't know. It's not like when I started to date Shawn, someone handed me a timeline of what was going to happen and when. When I'm ready, I'll be ready, and I'll let Shawn know. Shawn, can I talk to you in the kitchen please?" I asked as I looked over at him. He nodded and we went in the kitchen.
"What's up darling?" Shawn asked.
"You're not mad at me for what I'm saying to Matt, are you?" I asked, suddenly feeling nervous. His eyes widened.
"No, of course not! I'm proud of you babe! I know that you don't like confrontation, but you're telling him how what he's saying is making you feel. Don't worry honey, I'm not mad at all. I love you." He said. I smiled and quickly kissed his lips.
"I love you too." I said.
"Let's go back." Shawn said. I nodded.
"Okay." I said, and we sat down where we had been sitting before.
"So, Y/n, tell us about yourself. Something that Shawn hasn't told us." Matt said.
"Well I don't know what Shawn's told you guys." I said. Shawn leaned over and whispered in my ear.
"Just respond like you did with my parents and Aaliyah and the same for when you met John Mayer and JT." Shawn said. I nodded and told them about myself.
"So how long have you been a fan of Shawn's for?" Brian asked. I smiled.
"Well, my friend Lexie showed me his vines when I was a freshman in high school, so that's... six years." I said. They nodded.
"That's cool. And you saw him in concert the night before you guys met, right?" Brian asked. I nodded.
"Yeah. It was crazy, because the day that we met, I thought that I was just going to get some coffee and then head to my favorite park in Boston, and I got my coffee, turned around and saw Shawn. Then, within five minutes of meeting, Shawn asked me out on a date." I said with a smile.
"Aren't there like, a bunch of parks in Boston?" Brian asked. I nodded.
"Yeah. There's Boston Commons, Boston Public Gardens, Riverway Park, the Rose Fitzgerald Greenway, Coppens Square, the list goes on and on." I said. They nodded.
"Didn't you guys have your second date at a park in Boston?" Jon asked. Shawn and I smiled at each other and nodded.
"Yup. That's where we had our first kiss too." Shawn said.
"What park was it?" Jon asked. We told them (A/n: I don't feel comfortable saying which park I have in mind because there really is a bench dedicated to my uncle there, just like I've mentioned in previous imagines of mine and in this one as well.).
"Why that one?" Geoff asked.
"There's a lot of privacy there. Not many people go there. Plus, um, there's a bench there that's special to my family." I said the last sentence as I looked at my water bottle. I quickly realized that I shouldn't have said it, because it would open up a can of worms that I didn't want to be opened.
"Why is there a bench that's special to your family there?" Jon asked. I suddenly froze and looked at Shawn and then at his bottle of beer. His beer was almost empty.
"Do you want another beer babe? I'll go get you another beer." I said and before he could say anything, I bolted out of the room and into the kitchen. I gripped the sink, and heard bits and pieces of what Shawn was saying.
"Her uncle died when she was ten... memorial bench... heart attack... sudden... almost eleven years." I heard Shawn say. I grabbed him another beer and went back in the room. I sat down next to him and he kissed my cheek.
"Sorry about your uncle." Matt said. I nodded.
"Thank you." I said.
"So, because you were so young, did you go to his funeral or no?" Geoff asked. It was a harmless question, wasn't it? But to me, just the mere mention of my uncle's funeral brought back memories of that terrible day.
"No, I went to his funeral." I said. Maybe since I answered that question, they won't ask anything else about my uncle. I was wrong.
"So how did you react when you found out that your uncle died?" Brian asked.
"I'd actually rather not talk about my uncle right now. Sorry." I said.
"It's okay honey, don't apologize. If you don't want to talk about him, we don't have to." Shawn said. I nodded and leaned on him. The rest of the night went well. After a bit, it was time for them to leave. Matt came up to me as Shawn was talking to Jon, Geoff, and Brian.
"I'm sorry about earlier. I didn't mean to offend you or anything." Matt said. I nodded.
"Thank you for apologizing." I said. He nodded. The boys soon left and Shawn pulled me in for a hug.
"You did great babe! They loved you!" Shawn said with a smile. I smiled back.
"Thank you honey. I love you." I said. Shawn kissed me.
"I love you too. Come on, let's go to bed." Shawn said, and that's exactly what we did. I love Shawn so much, and I really do like his friends.
