52. Julia Gets Made Fun Of

Shawn's point of view

I'm home from tour, so when my wife, Y/n Mendes, asked me to pick the kids up from school since she was still at work and her meeting was running later than it should've, I gladly said yes. Y/n and I have three kids. Rose Lucille Mendes is our oldest. She's ten. Jacob Alexander Scott Mendes, also known as Jake, is eight. Our youngest, Julia Kennedy Mendes, is six.

I got in the car. All of the kids go to the local elementary school, so of course I drove there. The kids had no clue that I was picking them up. I parked my car and stood outside of it as I waited for the kids to come out. Some of the fellow parents gawked at me, and I just smiled and waved at them. Others just smiled, waved, and stood there waiting for their kids.

"DADDY! DADDY!" I heard Rose yell. I smiled as she ran into my arms. I picked her up.

"Hi sweet pea. How was school?" I asked.

"Good. I thought that Mommy was picking us up?" Rose asked as I set her down.

"She was going to, but a meeting at work ran later than expected. Want to put your backpack in the car?" I asked. She nodded.

"Yeah." She said, and took off her backpack. I took it from her and buckled her in and then put her backpack in the trunk. I then heard Jake.

"DADDY! DADDY!" Jake yelled as he ran into my arms, just like his big sister did. I smiled and picked him up.

"Hi buddy. How was school?" I asked.

"Good. Why are you picking us up today Daddy?" Jake asked.

"Well Mommy's meeting ran longer than it was expected to so she asked me to pick you guys up. Let's put your backpack in the trunk and get you buckled in." I said as I set him down.

"Okay." He said. I put his backpack in the trunk, buckled him in, and then waited for Julia. I soon spotted her. She frowned when she saw me, and unlike her siblings, she walked up to me at a normal pace.

"Hi." She said.

"Hi sweet pea. Mommy's meeting ran a bit late so I'm picking you guys up. Let's put your backpack in the back and get you buckled in." I said.

"Okay." She said. I then did as I said I was going to do, and once she was buckled in, I got into the driver's seat.

"How was your day Jules?" I asked.

"Good." She said. Something was up with her.

"Good. Do you guys have homework?" I asked.

"Yeah." Julia said.

"Yes." Jake said.

"No." Rose said.

"Okay. Well, Julia and Jake, I can try and help you guys with homework when we get home. It's been a long time since I was in elementary school, but I can try to help." I said.

"Okay." Jake said. Julia was quiet. We soon arrived at home and walked in the door.

"Daddy, since I don't have homework what do I do?" Rose asked.

"How about you color or draw or something like that?" I asked. She nodded.

"Okay." She said and then ran off.

"Do you guys need help?" I asked Julia and Jake. Jake shook his head.

"No, I got this Dad." He said. I chuckled.

"Okay buddy." I said. He then went into the dining room to work on his homework. I looked at Julia.

"I don't need your help Dad." Julia said. Two things surprised me: one of them being that she always calls me Daddy, the second one being her tone.

"Julia, please don't use that tone with me." I said as I watched her go up the stairs.

"Sorry." She said. I sighed. I was about to go check on Rose when the front door opened and my wife walked in. She smiled at me.

"Hi." Y/n said.

"Hi." I said. I gave her a quick kiss. She frowned.

"Everything okay?" She asked. I sighed.

"I don't know. Something's up with Julia." I said.

"What do you mean?" She asked. I told her everything, and I could tell by the look on her face that she was also confused.

"I don't know what happened." I said.

"I'll talk to her." Y/n said as she took off her heels.

"No honey, I'll talk to her, you just got home from a long day of work." I said. Y/n put her hand on my cheek.

"My love, I don't know what happened, but she seems to be upset with you right now, and don't forget that I have a degree in counseling." Y/n said. I smiled and nodded.

"Okay. I'll wait down here." I said. Y/n nodded.

"Okay." She said. She then went upstairs and I sat in the family room with Rose.

"What are you doing sweetheart?" I asked as I sat on the floor.

"Drawing a picture." She said.

"What are you drawing a picture of?" I asked.

"You and I." She said. I smiled.

"I love you sweet pea." I said.

"I love you too Daddy." Rose said. Her and I talked a bit more before Y/n came back down. I looked at her.

"What happened?" I asked as I stood up and walked over to her.

"It has to do with you calling her princess. You should go talk to her now." Y/n said. I nodded, kissed her cheek, and went upstairs to Julia's room. I knocked on the door.

"Come in." Julia said. I opened the door. She was sitting on her bed doing homework. I sat on the side of the bed. Julia barely even looked up at me.

"Hi honey." I said.

"Hi." She said.

"So do you want to tell me what's going on?" I asked. Julia thought for a moment and then shook her head.

"No." Julia said, still not looking at me.

"Well my dear, I'm your Daddy, and I'm worried about you. I want to know what's going on. Please tell me honey." I said. Julia put her pencil down and looked at me. My heart broke when I saw the tears in her eyes.

"The kids laughed at me in class today." Julia said.

"Oh honey, I'm sorry. Why did they do that?" I asked. Tears fell onto her cheeks and my heart broke even more.

"Because you call me princess. You call me that so much that I thought that I was an actual princess. My teacher, Ms. Jardin, asked all of us what we want to do when we grow up, and when she got to me, I said that I would do whatever a princess does because I'm a princess. The kids laughed and Ms. Jardin looked like she wanted to laugh. She asked me why I thought that I was a princess and I said that my Daddy calls me a princess and says that I'm a princess. She said that you calling me princess is just a nickname and that I'm not actually a princess. Ms. Jardin didn't even do anything when the kids were laughing and teasing me." Julia said.

"Oh my gosh honey, I'm so sorry. I thought that you knew that when I call you princess it's just a nickname. You may not be a princess to the world, but you're my princess. I'm sorry sweetie. Do you want me to stop calling you princess?" I asked as I leaned forward to wipe away some of her tears. She thought for a moment and sniffled before shaking her head.

"No. It's fine to call me that. But if I'm not a princess, then why did you get me tiaras?" Julia asked.

"That's because I like to spoil you. Wait, did you say that the teacher didn't do anything about the kids laughing and teasing you?" I said.

"Yeah. It even looked like she was trying not to laugh too." Julia said. My blood boiled.

"She didn't tell them to stop laughing or anything?" I asked. Julia shook her beautiful head. She has my brown hair, but Y/n's y/e/c eyes.

"No." Julia said. My blood boiled more.

"Okay. Well I'm sorry that this happened. Mommy and I will take care of it. I love you." I said.

"I love you too Daddy." She said.

"Do you need any help with your homework?" I asked. She looked at the paper in front of her.

"I don't understand this word." Julia said. I moved over so I could see the paper better. She's in the first grade, so she's still learning a lot of words.

"Which one honey? Can you point to it for me please?" I asked. She pointed at the word that was giving her trouble.

"This one. Squirm." Julia said. I nodded.

"Okay. Do you want to see what it looks like to squirm?" I asked. She nodded.

"Yeah." She said. I then squirmed a little bit, and she laughed, which made me happy since she had had a rough day.

"What are you laughing at?" I asked with a smile.

"You looked funny doing that Daddy." She said. I laughed and pulled up my phone. I then looked up the exact definition of squirm.

"Okay, the definition of squirm is 'to twist about like a worm.' Do you understand that?" I asked. She nodded.

"Yeah. Thank you Daddy." She said.

"You're welcome. Need help with anything else?" I asked. Julia shook her head.

"No. Thank you though." She said. I kissed the top of her head.

"You're welcome." I said. I then walked out of the room and went downstairs, where Y/n was sitting in the dining room with Jake. She quickly spotted me.

"How did it go?" Y/n asked.

"Could I talk to you in the kitchen for a moment please?" I asked. She nodded and turned to Jake.

"I'll be back, okay monkey?" Y/n asked Jake. He nodded.

"Okay Mommy." He said. She smiled and then followed me into the kitchen.

"So how did it go?" Y/n asked again. I told her everything that happened. Julia must have already told her everything because she nodded.

"I mean, the teacher didn't even do anything! If anything, Julia said that it looked like she was trying to hold back laughter!" I whisper yelled, not wanting to actually yell because it would freak out and upset the kids if they heard me yelling. Y/n's eyes widened.

"Wait, Ms. Jardin didn't do anything?" Y/n asked. Okay, so maybe Julia didn't tell her everything.

"No, not at all. The kids were laughing and teasing Jules and Ms. Jardin didn't do jack squat!" I whisper yelled. Y/n put her hand on my arm. I had been looking at the kitchen table, but when she put her hand on my arm, I looked at her and my face softened. Just by the look on my wife's face, I could tell that everything was going to be okay.

"Shhh honey, everything's okay. Don't forget that I work in the same public school system that our kids go to. I'll talk to someone higher up than me at work. Maybe if we talk to the principal or someone, they'll talk to the teacher, or we can get an appointment with the teacher." Y/n said. I nodded.

"Okay. I just don't like this situation." I said as I wrapped my arms around Y/n's waist and pulled her close to me. She wrapped her arms around my shoulders and I buried my face in her neck.

"I know honey, and I don't either, but we'll get this taken care of, I promise." Y/n said.

"Okay." I said. Two days later, due to the fact that my wife works in the same school system as our kids, we were able to meet with the principal, Mr. Kalen. We told him what happened and he was surprised.

"Well I apologize for that. That shouldn't have happened. Would you like a meeting with Ms. Jardin?" Mr. Kalen asked. I looked at my wife.

"If I see Ms. Jardin and get a chance to talk to her I might lose it." I said.

"Or I could talk to her." Mr. Kalen said. Y/n and I nodded.

"Yes, I think that that would be best." Y/n said. We soon left, and the next day, when Julia came home, she said that Ms. Jardin had apologized. Good.
