35. A Trip To Canada

I've been dating the singer and songwriter, Shawn Mendes, for almost three months now, and these past three months have been wonderful. We've known each other for about six months. I was sitting on the couch in my room when I got a text from Shawn.

Shawny: Hey honey. Mind if I Facetime you?

Me: Sure, that's fine.

Soon, Shawn was Facetiming me, so I answered. I smiled when I saw his handsome face pop up on my screen. He smiled back, causing me to have butterflies in my tummy.

"Hey there gorgeous." He said, causing me to blush.

"Hey handsome." I said.

"I have a question for you." He said.

"What is it?" I asked. He suddenly seemed nervous.

"Well, you have spring break next month, right?" He asked. I nodded.

"Yeah." I said. He nodded.

"Okay. Um, would you like to come up to Canada and meet my family and friends?" He asked nervously. My eyes widened.

"I mean, I would love to, but I would have to talk to my mom, and I don't think that I can afford a plane ticket." I said.

"Well, I've already talked to your mom, and she already said yes, and I would buy your plane ticket." Shawn said.

"Oh honey no, I would feel bad if you did that." I said.

"Why?" Shawn asked as he tilted his head a little.

"I don't like it when you spend money on me." I admitted. He gave me a soft and reassuring smile.

"Baby girl, it's fine. I don't mind it. I want you to meet my family and friends." He said.

"Would I be meeting everyone at once? You know that I get overwhelmed easily." I asked and said. Shawn nodded.

"I know. You would be meeting my parents and my sister one day, and then you would be meeting my friends another day. Your mom said that you could stay here until the Sunday before school starts back up." Shawn said.

"When would I get there?" I asked.

"Well, you could either fly up on Friday at some point after school, or on Saturday." Shawn said. I nodded.

"I'll fly up on Friday." I said. Shawn smiled.

"So does that mean that you'll let me buy you a plane ticket so you can stay here for your spring break?" He asked. I nodded.

"Yup." I said. He began running around and cheering, causing me to laugh. He then sat back down and smiled at me.

"I'm so excited babe!" He said.

"Me too honey. Who would pick me up from the airport? If you picked me up, you would attract a lot of attention." I asked and said. Shawn nodded.

"I know that it would be your first time meeting him, but how do you feel about my buddy Brian picking you up?" Shawn asked. I thought for a moment before nodding.

"Okay." I said. Shawn smiled.

"I can't wait honey." He said.

"Neither can I darling." I said. We continued to talk for a bit longer, Shawn listing all of the things that we could do, some of them made me a bit nervous because they were in public places and Shawn and I haven't gone public yet, but Shawn just smiled and told me that everything would be okay, and then we hung up. I feel so excited but nervous at the same time. What if Shawn's family doesn't like me? What if Shawn's friends don't like me? I had a hard time falling asleep that night, but I eventually did.

The next month

I had finished packing my things and I put them in my mom's car. After school, she would pick me up, I would leave my backpack in the car so she could take it home, and then she would drive me to the airport. After school got out and I got in the car, my mom smiled at me.

"Are you ready?" She asked. I nodded.

"Yes. Well, as ready as I'll ever be. I mean, I'm meeting his parents and his sister one day, and then his friends another day. Plus, he wants to do a whole bunch of things with me. I'm a little worried about us being seen in public together since we haven't gone public yet, but I trust him." I said. She nodded. When I got to the airport and said goodbye to my mom, I texted Shawn.

Me: Just got to the airport. Can't wait to see you! I've missed your handsome face!

Shawny: The second that I see you I'm going to kiss all over your face.

Me: I wouldn't mind that. Oh, I have to go. See you soon!

I then boarded the plane. I had never been on a plane before, so I felt pretty nervous. As I sat down on the plane, I thought about all of the things that he said he wanted to do with me. Luckily he said that when I get there, him and I can just relax for the night, and our adventures will start tomorrow. Soon after I landed, I looked around and spotted Brian. I smiled and went up to him.

"Hey, you must be Y/n." He said. I nodded.

"Yup. You must be Brian." I said. He nodded.

"Yup, I am. Let's get your luggage and then I'll drive you to Shawn's place." He said. I nodded.

"Okay, let me just text Shawn so he knows that I landed." I said. Brian nodded as I pulled out my phone.

Me: With Brian now!

Shawny: OMG I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU!

Me: Lol babe.

"Ready to go?" Brian asked as I put my phone away. I nodded.

"Yeah." I said.

"Okay, um, luggage is over here." Brian said and lead me in the right direction.

"Thank you for picking me up. I really appreciate it." I said.

"Of course, anything for Shawn's girl." Brian said. I smiled and blushed when he called me Shawn's girl.

"Oh, there's my luggage right there." I said as I went to grab it.

"I got it." Brian said and grabbed it for me. I grabbed the other suitcase.

"Thanks." I said. He nodded and we headed to his car.

"Shawn talks about you nonstop. I mean seriously, he's constantly showing his friends pictures of you, or pictures of you and him and he's always just gushing about you." Brian said as we began to leave the airport parking lot.

"Oh my gosh that's so cute. He's the cutest. I can't wait to see him." I said. Brian and I talked a little bit during the car ride, but we soon arrived at Shawn's place. I knocked on the door and it almost immediately swung open.

"BABE!" Shawn yelled as he picked me up. I laughed and wrapped my legs around his waist as his hands went underneath my bum.

"Hi honey." I said. He set me down and smiled at me.

"Wow, I think you got even more beautiful since I last saw you." He said.

"Oh my gosh." I said with a blush and he chuckled before turning to Brian.

"Thank you so much for picking her up. I really appreciate it." Shawn said.

"No problem. See you guys later." Brian said and we nodded. Shawn took my luggage.

"I can carry some of that." I said.

"Nope, you're my girl, and I want my girl to sit on the couch while I put her suitcases in my bedroom, and then I'll come back and sit with you." He said.

"Okay." I said as I nodded and sat down. Shawn smiled, brought my luggage into his bedroom and then came back and sat with me. He pulled me into his lap.

"How was your flight?" He asked.

"It was good. You know what I've missed?" I asked.

"What have you missed baby?" Shawn asked.

"Kissing you." I said. Shawn's smile widened and he put his lips on mine. I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my tummy, and I felt sparks shoot through me like fireworks. Shawn and I soon pulled away.

"Magical, per usual." He said and I nodded.

"Yup. So what are we doing tomorrow?" I asked. Shawn smiled.

"Tomorrow, my dear girl, you're going to meet my family. It'll just be my parents, my sister, you and I." He said. I felt nervous and I nodded.

"Um, do I need to dress up or anything?" I asked. Shawn thought for a moment.

"Maybe some nice jeans and a nice shirt, but nothing too fancy." Shawn said. I nodded.

"Okay. Um, I'm nervous." I said. Shawn frowned a little.

"Why baby?" He asked.

"Well I'm going to be meeting my boyfriend's family for the first time. I want to make a good first impression on them." I said. Shawn rubbed my legs.

"Oh honey, you already have." He said. I tilted my head in confusion.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"I've told them about you and they said that you sound wonderful." Shawn said. I nodded my head.

"Okay. So, what time am I meeting them at?" I asked.

"We're going to go there for lunch." Shawn said. I nodded. We cuddled, talked, and watched Netflix for the rest of the night. The next day I did my hair, put on a minimal amount of makeup, and then put on dark blue jeans and a white, with black dots, button up shirt. I stepped out to where Shawn was. He was wearing black jeans and a blue long sleeve shirt that accentuated his muscles.

"Shawn? Do I look okay?" I asked. Shawn turned to me and smiled.

"You look beautiful baby." He said.

"Am I dressed up too much? Should I get changed?" I asked. Shawn wrapped his arms around my waist and I wrapped my arms around his broad shoulders.

"No, you look stunning honey." He said and I blushed.

"Thank you. You look very handsome. I love this shirt on you." I said.

"Yeah?" Shawn asked. I nodded.

"Mmm hmm. It really shows off your muscles and I love that." I said. Shawn threw his head back with laughter.

"You like my muscles babe?" He asked. I nodded.

"Yeah. I like them a lot. Should we head out now?" I asked. Shawn nodded and as he interlaced our fingers, I felt sparks shoot through me, yet I felt safe and warm at the same time. Shawn and I got into his jeep and he began to drive to the home that he grew up in. I kept bouncing my leg.

"It's okay babe. You'll do great, I know you will." Shawn said, sensing my nerves. I nodded.

"Okay." I said. We soon pulled into the driveway and Shawn and I walked in.

"Mum! Dad! Aaliyah! Y/n and I are here!" He yelled. Soon, a beautiful woman that I recognized as his mother came rushing towards us with a smile.

"Hello darling!" She said as she gave Shawn a hug.

"Hi Mum." He said. She then turned to me and smiled.

"You must be the girl that my son can't stop talking about." She said and I blushed. Shawn wrapped an arm around my waist at the same time that Manny and Aaliyah walked into the room.

"Yup, she is. Guys, this is my wonderful girlfriend, Y/n Y/l/n." Shawn said as he smiled at me.

"It's so nice to finally meet you." Manny said.

"It's nice to meet you too Mr. Mendes." I said. He waved his hand.

"Please, call me Manny." He said. I nodded.

"And you can call me Karen." Karen said. I nodded.

"Okay." I said.

"Hi, I'm Aaliyah." Aaliyah, Shawn's little sister said.

"Hi, nice to meet you. I actually went to school with a girl that has the same name as you, but she spells Aaliyah with just one a in the beginning." I said.

"Really? Just one a?" Shawn asked. I nodded.

"Yeah." I said.

"Well how about we all go have lunch? I made grilled cheese sandwiches." Karen asked and said. My eyes widened and I smiled.

"Oh I love grilled cheese." I said. Shawn chuckled and kissed the side of my head. We then all sat down.

"So Y/n, tell us about yourself." Karen said. I've never been one to like attention on myself. I felt Shawn's hand on my back, rubbing it soothingly and I looked at him. Shawn kissed my cheek and then turned to his family.

"She's a bit shy and nervous since this is her first time meeting you guys and she wants to make a good first impression." Shawn explained.

"Oh nonsense. With everything that Shawn's told us about you, you already have." Karen said. I smiled and nodded. I then began to tell them about myself. Shawn kept rubbing my back to keep me calm. Afterwards, Karen grabbed our empty plates.

"Do you want me to help with the dishes?" I asked.

"No, you're our guest. Go sit down darling." Karen said.

"Are you sure? I really wouldn't mind." I said. Karen thought for a moment.

"Okay. I could use some extra hands." She said. I smiled and began to help her with the dishes.

"I have to thank you. You've raised a wonderful and amazing man. Shawn treats me like a princess. He'll do certain things and I get surprised at times because I've never been treated the way that Shawn treats me. He's just so wonderful." I said with a smile. Karen smiled too.

"Well thank you for saying that. Shawn said that your ex boyfriend wasn't so nice to you. He didn't go into detail, and you don't have to if you don't want to, but Shawn told his father and I that he wanted to go out and find your ex and scream at him for the way that he treated you." Karen said.

"Oh gosh. Yeah, Mike was, well, a jerk." I said. I then went on to tell her more about the crap that he would say and do. Even after we finished the dishes, we kept talking. Karen and I dried our hands and then she pulled me in for a hug.

"Well you don't have to worry about that anymore. You're with a good man now. And anytime that you want to talk, no matter what it's about, even if it's about a fight with Shawn, call me, okay?" She asked. I nodded and pulled out my phone.

"Okay. Thank you so much." I said.

"You're welcome." She said. I made a new contact in my phone and handed it to her. She put her contact in and then we went into the living room. Shawn smiled when he saw me.

"Hey baby girl." He said.

"Hey there honey." I said.

"Hey Y/n, do you think that we could exchange numbers?" Aaliyah asked. I smiled and nodded.

"Of course!" I said. I made a new contact in my phone again and we swapped phones. Next, Manny and I exchanged phone numbers. I then sat down next to Shawn. He whispered in my ear.

"You having a good time baby?" He asked. I nodded.

"Yeah." I said. He then wrapped an arm around me and I leaned on him. Shawn kissed the top of my head and I smiled up at him. He smiled back. I then heard the click of someone's camera and I saw Karen's red face.

"Sorry, you guys just looked so cute and I couldn't help but take a picture." Karen said.

"That's fine Mum. Actually, would you mind sending it to me please?" Shawn asked.

"Sure. Y/n do you want me to send it to you too?" Karen asked. I nodded.

"Yes please." I said. Shawn and I soon left.

"There's a place that I want to take you honey. I know that it's in public, but even if we get caught, so what?" Shawn asked as we drove along. I nodded.

"Can I be honest with you?" I asked.

"Of course." Shawn said.

"I'm not quite ready to go public yet. I want to eventually, when the timing is right. I know that I'm going to get hate from some fans, and I'm just not ready for that yet." I said.

"Okay baby girl. That's fine. How about this: while we're walking around the park, we won't hold hands. Does that sound okay?" He asked.

"Yeah. But I do love holding your hand." I said. Shawn chuckled and then brought my hand to his lips as he drove. Gosh I love this boy - he just doesn't know yet.

"We're here. This is the Toronto Island Park." Shawn said.

"Oh it's beautiful." I said.

"Not as beautiful as you." Shawn said and I blushed. We then stepped out of the car and began to walk around.

"I really want to hold your hand or something. What if, like, we hold hands or something, and then if we get caught, we can deny it or something?" I asked. Shawn thought for a moment before nodding.

"Okay. Come here." He said as he wrapped an arm around my shoulders and I wrapped an arm around my waist.

"This is nice. I like it here." I said. Shawn let his thumb rub my shoulders.

"Would you ever come back to Canada?" He asked. I smiled and nodded.

"Definitely." I said as I looked at him. He smiled at me.

"Good. So what did you think of my family?" He asked.

"I loved them! They're so nice and wonderful!" I said. Shawn nodded and chuckled.

"You definitely made a good first impression babe." Shawn said. I was about thank him when he suddenly dropped his arm.

"What just happened?" I asked.

"That girl is wearing a youth hoodie, and if she sees us walking around like that, rumors might be started. If she comes up to us, should we say that we're just friends?" Shawn asked. I moved my arm away from him as I nodded.

"Okay." I said. The girl spotted us and came over.

"Hi Shawn, could I get a picture with you please?" She asked. Shawn nodded.

"Of course." He said and they took the picture. The girl then looked at me, and then looked back at Shawn.

"Are you guys dating?" She asked.

"No, she's just a friend." Shawn said. Even though I knew that he was going to say it, I still didn't like hearing it. The girl nodded.

"Okay. I don't mean to make things weird, but if you guys did date, you would make a really cute couple." She said. I blushed as Shawn smiled at me.

"Thank you." Shawn said. The girl looked at me.

"You're really pretty." She said.

"Thank you." I said.

"She is, isn't she?" Shawn asked and I blushed. The girl nodded.

"Yup. Bye!" The girl said and then walked away. Shawn smiled at me as we resumed our walk.

"I have to say, I knew that you were going to say that we're friends, but it still killed me a little when I heard you say that." I said.

"I'm sorry honey. I didn't like saying it." Shawn said. I nodded. We walked around a bit more before heading back to his car. When we got back to his place, I checked Instagram. I follow a bunch of Shawn Mendes fan accounts and some people had taken pictures of Shawn and I when he had his arms wrapped around each other.

"OH MY GOSH DOES SHAWN HAVE A GIRLFRIEND? THIS IS WHAT HE DESERVES, A NICE GIRL." The caption read.

"Shawn?" I called out. He poked his head out of the kitchen.

"Yeah babe?" He asked.

"Can you come look at this please?" I asked. He nodded, walked over to me and looked at my phone. He sighed and nodded.

"Okay. Well, I won't say anything until you're ready." Shawn said.

"Okay, thank you." I said as Shawn handed me my phone back.

"Anything for my girl." Shawn said and I blushed. He went back to what he had been doing and I looked at some of the comments. Not all of them were very nice. I felt my depression kick in. I stood up and walked over to Shawn.

"Baby I'm going to take a nap." I said. I didn't tell him that I wanted to fall asleep to escape reality.

"Okay honey, but I want to take you out for dinner tonight. I'll ask that we're seated in the back or something so people can't see us." Shawn said. I nodded.

"Okay." I said. I kissed his cheek, and as I went to walk away, I felt him lightly grab my wrist. I looked at him.

"Are you okay honey?" He asked. I nodded.

"Yeah. Just tired." I lied. He seemed hesitant but nodded.

"Okay baby." He said as he let go of my wrist. I went and laid down but couldn't fall asleep. After half an hour, I got up. Shawn was watching tv and I sat next to him. He instantly put an arm around me.

"Do I need to dress up for dinner tonight?" I asked as I rested my head on his chest.

"What you're wearing is fine." Shawn said. I was in the same clothes that I was wearing when I met his parents earlier today.

"Okay. Um, can I tell you the real reason why I went to bed?" I asked as I sat up. Shawn paused the television and nodded.

"Yeah." He said.

"I was looking at some of the comments on the posts about us and not all of them were all that nice." I said.

"I'm sorry honey." Shawn said.

"It's not your fault." I said. Shawn sighed and ran his fingers through his hair as he thought for a moment.

"Would you mind if I did a live stream? You don't have to be in it, and I won't be confirm or deny anything about us." Shawn said. I nodded.

"Okay, I'll just sit over here so I'm out of view." I said. Shawn nodded and began a live stream on Instagram.

"Hi guys. So, there are some pictures going around of me with a girl. I'm not going to confirm or deny anything about her. I know that you guys are assuming that she's my girlfriend, but like I said, I'm not going to confirm or deny anything. However, some of the comments that are being made about her aren't so nice, and that's completely unacceptable. You guys know me, so you guys know that I wouldn't have a mean, bad, person in my life, and people are assuming that this girl is my girlfriend and they're making nasty assumptions about her. That's not fair and it's not right. Please be nicer, because she's able to see the comments and so am I. Like I said, I'm not confirming or denying anything that has to do with her, I just want the people who are being mean to stop. Anyways, I have to go, but I love you guys, bye!" Shawn said. He blew a kiss at his phone and then ended the live stream.

"Thank you for that." I said.

"Of course, anything for you. Come on, let's head to dinner." Shawn said. I nodded, fixed my makeup, and we got in the car and headed to a nice restaurant.

"Are we dressed up enough?" I asked. Shawn chuckled.

"Yes we are babe. I'll ask for us to be seated in the back." Shawn said and I nodded.

"Okay." I said. We went inside.

"Hi, could we have a table for two, and could it be in the back or somewhere away from a lot of other people? It's for privacy reasons." Shawn asked and said. They nodded.

"Sure." The waitresses said.

"Thank you." Shawn and I said. As we walked to the table, he kept his hand on my back.

"Here you go. Someone will be right with you." The waitress said and we thanked her. Our seats were kind of private. I mean, some other people could see us, but as long as I'm with Shawn, I'm good. Another waitress came over to get our orders. Shawn ordered his food and then it was my turn.

"Um, I'll just take some water and spaghetti without sauce please." I said as I handed her my menu.

"Okay. Your food should be ready in a little bit." She said. Shawn and I thanked her and then she walked away.

"Why didn't you get it with sauce?" Shawn asked.

"Because I'm the messiest eater you'll ever meet, and if I get it with sauce, it's going to be all over my face, and it won't be a pretty sight." I said with a laugh. Shawn laughed too.

"Well darling, I find that hard to believe considering that you're always a pretty sight." Shawn said. I blushed.

"Thank you." I said.

"You're welcome." He said. I looked around the restaurant. It was a nice restaurant. My gaze froze on a man that was trying to be sneaky, but was very obviously taking pictures of Shawn and I - his phone was directed right at us. I looked at Shawn.

"There's a guy trying to take pictures of us." I said.

"Where?" Shawn asked.

"Look to your left a bit." I said. Shawn did. I watched as he looked at the guy, who was still taking pictures, and then Shawn got up and walked over to him. Shawn said something to him and then came back.

"Okay, that's taken care of." Shawn said.

"What did you say to him?" I asked.

"I asked him how many photos he had taken and he said that he wasn't sure because he just kept hitting the button to take pictures of us so I told him that I think he has plenty and that you and I are just trying to have dinner in peace. I asked him to please stop taking pictures and he put his phone away and said okay. He asked if you and I were dating and I said that I would keep the answer to that to myself for now." Shawn said. I nodded.

"Okay, thank you." I said.

"You're welcome babe." He said.

"You mean a lot to me, I hope that you realize that. Like, you make me feel like a princess or something." I said. Shawn chuckled.

"Well that's because you are my princess. You mean a lot to me too honey." Shawn said and I smiled.

"So did I make a good first impression on your family today?" I asked. His smile widened as he nodded.

"They absolutely adore you." Shawn said. I smiled.

"That makes me happy. They're so nice." I said.

"They're great. What should we do when we get back to my place?" Shawn asked.

"We could watch Netflix." I said. Shawn nodded.

"Sounds good to me." Shawn said. Soon, our food and drinks arrived.

"Um, I apologize, but the paparazzi are outside. Is there anything that we can do?" The waitress asked. I looked at Shawn. He shook his head.

"No. Thank you though." Shawn said. The woman nodded and walked away.

"Shawn what are we going to do when we get out there?" I asked.

"I know that we haven't gone public yet, but I want you to hold my hand and don't let go when we get out there. I don't want you drifting away from me because of them, okay?" Shawn asked. I nodded.

"Okay. But won't that kind of confirm our relationship if we're holding hands?" I asked.

"It might, but we haven't confirmed it ourselves yet, and until we do it ourselves, people aren't going to know for sure. But, like I said, I don't want you drifting away from me so that's why I want you to hold my hand." Shawn said before taking a sip of his drunk. I nodded.

"Okay. Um, I'm really sorry that I'm not ready to go public yet." I said.

"It's okay. Remember what I said to you on our second date?" He asked. I thought for a moment.

"A lot of stuff was said that day." I said with a giggle. Shawn chuckled and nodded.

"Yes, and one of the things that I said was that you should set the pace, and I'll just keep up." Shawn said. I nodded.

"Okay." I said. Soon, we had paid for our meal and we went to leave. Shawn held his hand out for me to take.

"Remember, hold onto my hand and don't let go until we get to the car." Shawn said. I nodded.

"Okay." I said. I held his hand and we stepped outside where a crap ton of paparazzos were waiting.

"SHAWN! IS THIS YOUR GIRLFRIEND?" One yelled.

"SHAWN! OVER HERE!" Another yelled.

"SHAWN! SHAWN! OVER HERE! ARE YOU GUYS DATING?" Another yelled. Not only did I hold Shawn's hand, but I used my other hand to wrap around his arm. One of the paparazzos got right in my face and the flash was blinding. I let go of Shawn's arm and put my hand over my face. Shawn noticed that I had let go of his hand and looked to see what was going on.

"Please back up a little. You're right in her face." Shawn said.

"Are you guys dating?" The guy asked as he didn't move.

"I'm not going to answer that, just please move a bit away. You're way too close to her." Shawn said.

"When will you guys go public?" The guy asked.

"Dude, get out of her face, I can tell that you're making her very uncomfortable." Shawn said to the guy. I squeezed his hand. The guy took a couple steps back but it wasn't much.

"Is that good?" He asked. Shawn didn't answer, we just resumed us walking to his car. He helped me in and shut the door behind me and then got in on the driver's side. He had to honk his horn a few times to get them to move and I held my purse above my face.

"You okay honey?" Shawn asked as we finally drove away.

"I've never had to go through that before. Thank you for making that guy back up." I said.

"Of course honey. I could tell that he was making you uncomfortable, and I don't like it when my girl is uncomfortable." Shawn said.

"I love it when you call me your girl." I said as I looked at him. A smile adorned his handsome face.

"Yeah?" He asked.

"Yup. Or like, when Brian picked me up at the airport, I thanked him and he was like 'Anything for Shawn's girl.' and it just made me really happy. I hope that you realize that you're my man." I said. Shawn kissed my hand.

"I love that. I'm Y/n Y/l/n's man." He said. I nodded.

"Yup." I said with a smile. I had a really nice time in Canada with Shawn. I got to meet some of his friends from growing up, and some of the people on his team. I was also encouraged by Justin Timberlake to tell Shawn that I love him, and when I did, Shawn said it back. I loved my first trip to Canada, and I can't wait for more.
