20. Wedding Dress Shopping
I was sitting with my fiancé, Shawn Mendes, as we went over plans for our wedding next years. Shawn put his arm on the back of my chair and kissed my cheek repeatedly. I smiled.
"Babe, we have to pick out centerpieces." I said.
"I want to talk to you about something." He said. I turned to him.
"What is it?" I asked. From the tone of his voice, it sounded serious.
"Your wedding dress. I know that the bride's family is supposed to pay for your dress, but I want to. I want to pay for your wedding dress." He said. I put my hand to his cheek.
"No honey. My family is supposed to pay for it, and you know that I'm not with you for your money." I said.
"I know that honey. I can see your love for me in your eyes and I love it. When you go shopping for your wedding dress, I want you to take my credit card, and if you want to buy a veil and a tiara, go ahead. Just take my credit card when you go." He said. I chewed at my bottom lip.
"I don't know. I would feel bad." I said. Shawn shook his head.
"Please don't darling. Take my credit card and get whatever dress you want, okay?" Shawn asked. I sighed and nodded.
"Okay. Thank you honey." I said. He smiled at me.
"You're welcome baby girl." He said before he started to look at our options for center pieces again.
"Wait." I said. Shawn looked at me.
"What is it my love?" Shawn asked.
"What's the budget for my dress and stuff?" I asked. Shawn smiled and chuckled.
"Oh my silly girl, you don't have one. I don't care how much the dress costs, just get whichever one makes you the happiest." Shawn said. My eyes widened.
"Are you sure?" I asked. He nodded.
"Yup." He said. I leaned forward and rested my head on his shoulder.
"Thank you Shawn. I love you." I said. He rubbed my back a little bit.
"You're welcome Y/n. I love you too." He said. I picked my head up and looked at him.
"Do you think that I should wear a veil?" I asked. He shrugged.
"That's up to you babe. It's whatever you want. This is your world, I'm just living in it." Shawn said. I kissed his cheek.
"You're amazing." I said.
"That's you darling. So who did you say that you're taking with you when you go dress shopping?" Shawn asked.
"My mom, your Mum, Aaliyah, and Grace." I said. Shawn nodded.
"And you want to go to Kleinfeld's in New York City, right?" He asked. I nodded.
"Yup." I said.
"I wish that I could go with you. Who's driving you guys?" Shawn asked.
"First of all, you're not allowed to see me in my dress until I walk down the aisle, and second of all, your mum is driving." I said. Shawn laughed and nodded. The day soon came for me to go to Kleinfeld's. Shawn was going to stay at home and wait until we all got back.
"Come give me a kiss before you leave honey." Shawn said as he walked us all out to the car. I smiled and put my lips on his. I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my tummy, and I felt sparks shoot through me like fireworks.
"This is gross." Aaliyah said and Shawn and I pulled away from each other as we blushed.
"Oh hush chica. Have fun guys and call me when you're on your way home." Shawn said. We nodded. I gave him one more quick kiss.
"I love you." I said. Shawn smiled at me.
"I love you too baby." He said, and we all got in the car. Shawn waved from the end of the driveway and I waved back until I couldn't see him anymore.
"Y/n, are you ready to pick out your wedding dress?" Karen asked.
"Yes, but nervous." I said.
"Why?" Everyone asked.
"Well, two reasons: 1. What if Shawn doesn't like whatever dress I choose? And 2. What if I don't find the right dress today?" I asked. My best friend, Grace, was sitting next to me and she reached over and squeezed my hand.
"Shawn's going to love whatever dress you choose, and if you don't find the right dress at Kleinfeld's, you can always look somewhere else." Grace said. I nodded.
"Yeah but Kleinfeld's has such a huge selection." I said.
"Don't worry, you'll find your dress." My mom said. I nodded and after a bit we arrived at Kleinfeld's. I took a deep breath and we walked in. A lady came over to us soon after. This is where they film the show Say Yes to the Dress and I had given them permission to film me, so the lady had a camera crew with me.
"Hello, how are you guys today?" She asked.
"Good." We said.
"Good, so I'm Amanda and I'll be helping you today. Are you the bride?" She asked me. I nodded and smiled.
"Yes." I said.
"Wonderful. Y/n, right?" She asked. I nodded.
"Yes." I said.
"Okay, and who did you bring with you today?" She asked. I introduced everyone. "Great! So I'll bring you guys over to the couch, and Y/n and I will go into a dressing room. Sound good?"
"Yup." We all said. I had a folder with me, and in it were pictures of dresses that I liked. Amanda and I went into the dressing room, and sat down.
"So tell me a little bit about your fiancé." Amanda said. I smiled.
"Well, his name is Shawn Mendes. I had seen him in concert on August 15th, 2019, and the next day I went to Dunkin Donuts and when I got my drink and turned around, he was already looking at me. I knew that he was the one right away. We started dating on December 22, 2019, and on May 11, 2022, he asked me to marry him and of course I said yes." I said, the smile never leaving my face.
"Is he your best friend?" She asked with a smile. I nodded.
"Definitely. I always tell him that he's my best friend, my soulmate, my everything and he always tells me that he feels the same way about me." I said.
"That's beautiful. I see that you have a folder." She said. I nodded and opened it up.
"Yes. These are just some wedding dresses that I saw and really liked. I apologize, I don't know the names of most of the designers, but I know that this one is a Berta dress." I said as I pointed at one of them. She looked at them.
"They're beautiful. What's the budget?" She asked.
"There isn't one." I said.
"Oh! Well that gives us more to work with. Do you want a lot of bling or something like that?" She asked. I shook my head.
"No. I mean, maybe a little bit of bling would be nice, but not a lot. I like the idea of having a floral pattern on the dress but that's not a must." I said. She nodded.
"Okay. If you don't mind me asking, is there any special significance to the flowers?" She asked. I smiled.
"Well the cover of Shawn's third album had flowers on it and he likes to incorporate floral things into his shows and things like that, plus he likes to buy me flowers sometimes, so I figured that if I have a floral pattern, it would be like having a part of him on my dress." I said.
"That's beautiful! Do you mind if I take this folder with me while I go look for some dresses?" She asked.
"No that's fine." I said. She nodded and then left. I got changed - the camera crew stepped out for that and then came back in when I was done. Amanda soon came back.
"Okay, so I found some dresses. Are there any that you instantly don't like?" She asked. I took a step closer to them.
"I don't like this one. I would like the dress to be white." I said. She nodded.
"Okay, so we'll put that one aside. Which one do you want to try on first?" She asked. I looked at them.
"Um, how about this one?" I asked. She nodded and helped me get into it.
"What do you think?" She asked. I looked at myself in the mirror.
"I don't know. I'm not feeling it." I said.
"Okay. Do you want to show it to your group and then see if you like it more after that?" She asked. I nodded.
"Yeah." I said and we stepped out and went to everyone was sitting. Grace made a face. I laughed. "I saw that face Grace."
"Sorry." She said with a laugh.
"It's okay. What do you guys think?" I asked as I turned to show them. None of them seemed too thrilled.
"It just doesn't seem like something that you would wear. What do you think Y/n?" Mom asked.
"I'm not feeling it." I said.
"Okay, well let's go back to the dressing room." Amanda said.
"Okay." I said and we went back to the dressing room. She put me into a dress that had straps and a floral print. I smiled.
"What do you think about this one?" She asked.
"I like it a lot. I love the floral print on it. I'm just slightly concerned about looking like a cotton ball, but other than that I really like it." I said. She laughed a little.
"You don't look like a cotton ball." She said. We walked out and everyone smiled.
"Oh you look beautiful honey. What do you think of it?" My mom asked. I looked at myself in the mirror.
"I like it a lot. I like the floral pattern on it. Okay wait," I said as I turned around to face them. "I already asked Amanda this, but I need to ask you guys a question and I need an honest answer: do I look like a cotton ball?"
"No!" My mom and Karen said. Grace laughed and so did Aaliyah.
"I wouldn't have thought that but since you pointed it out, a little bit, yeah." Grace said. I can always count on her to be honest with me - even if the truth sucks.
"Okay, back to the dressing room." I said with a laugh.
"Wait no! I didn't mean it in a bad way." Grace said.
"No I know. I just, I want to look like a princess or something, especially since Shawn always calls me his princess." I said.
"I know that you love Shawn, but you're so worried about him liking the dress and everything, and I just want you to remember that this is your day too." She said.
"I know! I just want to make him happy and I want to make him smile. He's about to be my husband." I said. Everyone nodded and I went back to the dressing room with Amanda. I sighed.
"You okay?" She asked. I nodded.
"Yeah. I wish Shawn was here but at the same time I don't want him to see me in the dress until I walk down the aisle. His opinion matters more to me than anyone else's." I said. Amanda nodded and put me in another dress (A/n: dress is pictured above!). I instantly smiled.
"Do you like this one?" She asked.
"Oh my gosh yes! I love it! Wait, could straps be added to it?" I asked. Amanda nodded.
"Yup. Do you want to go show everyone?" She asked. I nodded.
"Yes. Oh I hope they love it." I said. Amanda brought me out to everyone and my mom and Karen instantly began to get emotional. I smiled.
"Oh my gosh, you look so beautiful." My mom said.
"Thank you." I said as I looked in the mirror. I loved it. It was so beautiful I turned around so everyone could see me and they were all smiling.
"You look like a princess!" Karen said as she wiped tears away. I then saw Randy, who works at the store, come over.
"I heard we have the bride of a Grammy nominated singer here." He said. I nodded.
"Yes." I said.
"Do you like this dress?" He asked. I nodded and smiled.
"I love it so much. I feel like a princess in it." I said.
"Do you think that this is the one?" He asked. I nodded.
"Yes." I said.
"So, Y/n, are you saying yes to the dress?" Randy asked. My smile widened and I nodded.
"Yes, I'm saying yes to the dress!" I said and everyone cheered.
"Wait right there, I'll be right back." Randy said. I kept smiling, and soon Randy came back with a little tiara and veil and put it on me.
"Oh my gosh." I said as I looked at myself in the mirror.
"Do you like it?" Randy asked. I nodded.
"Yes, I love it." I said with a smile. Happy tears formed in my eyes as it really hit me: I'm getting married. I turned around and faced everyone again and they were all still smiling. My mom then frowned.
"Are you okay Y/n? You look like you're going to cry." She asked and said.
"These are happy tears, I promise. I feel like a princess right now and it's really hitting me that I get to marry my best friend. Can I call Shawn please?" I asked as I wiped away some happy tears. My mom nodded. She had put my phone in her purse while I tried on dresses. She handed it to me.
"Here you go." She said.
"Thank you." I said.
"You're welcome." She said. I called Shawn.
"Hi darling." He said.
"Hi honey." I said.
"What's wrong? Are you okay?" He asked.
"No I'm okay, these are happy tears, I promise." I said.
"Why are you crying happy tears babe?" Shawn asked. I smiled.
"Well I found the perfect dress and Randy found an accessory for it and it's just really hitting me that we're going to get married. I'm just really happy that I found the perfect dress and the perfect man to spend the rest of my life with." I said.
"Oh honey. I'm not perfect but you are." He said and I blushed.
"You're making me blush!" I said. He laughed.
"That was the goal my love." He said.
"I have to go but I just wanted to call you." I said.
"Okay baby, I love you so much." He said. My smile widened as I played with the dress.
"I love you so much too. Bye honey." I said.
"Bye." He said and we hung up. I was brought back to the dressing room and after I got changed into my regular clothes, I went to pay for the dress, veil, and little tiara using Shawn's credit card. It came to a total of about five thousand dollars.
"Um, you definitely don't look like Shawn Mendes." The woman at the cash register said.
"Shawn's my fiancé." I said.
"Did he give you permission to use his card?" She asked. I nodded.
"Yes." I said.
"Do you have proof of that?" She asked.
"No." I said.
"Well how am I supposed to know that you didn't steal it?" She asked. I was shocked.
"Should I FaceTime him so he can tell you himself that he gave me permission to use it?" I asked, feeling irritated.
"Sure." The lady said. I pulled out my phone and FaceTimed Shawn. He answered right away. I must have had a sour look on my face because he frowned.
"Hey baby. You okay?" He asked.
"Well, I'm trying to pay for the dress and the accessories with your credit card like you told me to, and the cashier is asking me if I have proof that you gave me permission to use it and she asked how she's supposed to know that I didn't steal it. Can you talk to her please?" I asked. His eyes widened.
"Yes of course." He said.
"Thank you." I said and then handed the cashier my phone and crossed my arms. I felt tired. The drive here was three and a half hours long, then I spent a couple of hours at the store, and I still needed to make the trip home. I just wanted to be back in Shawn's arms.
"Hi Mr. Mendes. Did you give this woman your permission to use your credit card?" The cashier, Helen, asked.
"Yes, I did give my fiancé permission to use my credit card." He said.
"Okay, that was all I needed to hear." She said and then handed the phone back to me.
"I'll call you when I get in the car." I said and he nodded.
"Okay baby. Love you." He said. I smiled a little.
"I love you too." I said, and we hung up. I paid for the dress and got in the car. Karen had the car ready and everyone was ready for me.
"What took you so long?" Grace asked.
"I just had to FaceTime Shawn because they were worried that I stole his credit or something." I said.
"You're joking." Aaliyah said.
"Nope. I'm tired and I just want to be back with Shawn. Why would I take his credit card? Anyways, I told him that I would call him when I got in the car." I said.
"Okay." They said and I called him.
"Hi baby. How are you doing?" He asked. I started to cry a little.
"I'm tired and upset now. Like, why would I steal your credit card?" I said and asked.
"You wouldn't baby." He said.
"Exactly. I would never do that. I just want to cuddle in bed with you." I said.
"I promise you that we can do that when you get home honey. Try to close your eyes now, okay?" He asked. I yawned.
"Okay." I said.
"At least you found your dress." Shawn said. I smiled.
"Yeah. Oh Shawn I hope that you like it. I felt like a princess in it." I said.
"Well that's fitting considering the fact that you're my princess." He said. I yawned.
"Yup. And you're my prince. I'm going to rest my eyes but I'll see you when we get home." I said.
"Okay baby girl. I love you." He said.
"I love you too." I said and we hung up. I closed my eyes, leaned my head on Grace's shoulder, and fell asleep.
"Yeah she's asleep on my shoulder. Yeah, we're in the driveway." Grace said. I was half asleep and didn't budge. I closed my eyes again but soon heard the car door open and felt someone lightly shake me.
"Y/n? Honey it's time to wake up." Shawn said. I picked up my head and yawned.
"I'm tired." I said as Shawn reached in and unbuckled me.
"I know you are baby. Come here." He said as he helped me out of the car. I immediately hugged him.
"I missed you." I said. I felt Shawn pick me up so I instinctively wrapped my legs around his waist.
"I missed you too darling. Come on, let's get you to bed." He said.
"Okay." I said as Shawn carried me inside and upstairs to our bedroom so he could tuck me in.
"I'll be right back babe. I'm just going to say goodbye to your mom and Grace and then I'll show my mum and Aaliyah to their rooms and then I'll be in bed." He said. I nodded.
"Okay. I love you. Please thank everyone for coming with me." I said with my eyes closed.
"I will baby. I love you too sweetheart. Sleep well my love." He said, and then I fell asleep. I'm so grateful for Shawn and I love him so much. He loved the wedding dress so much that he cried when he saw me walk down the aisle.
