170. Your First Valentine's Day Together
I've been dating the singer and songwriter Shawn Mendes for a little over a month. We met last August when he was on tour in Boston and we clicked right away. We got to know each other for four months, and on December 22, 2019, Shawn showed up at my front door step and asked me to be his girlfriend. I had completely fallen for him, so of course I said yes.
It was a couple of weeks before Valentine's Day. I was heading to the cafeteria after class, and as I crossed the quad, my phone rang. I smiled when I saw that it was Shawn, his contact picture the one that I had taken when he came to see me on our one month anniversary. His smile was so big, I loved it so much. I swiped to answer the call as I sat down at a picnic table that was in the campus's quad.
"Hi handsome." I said as I answered.
"Hi gorgeous." Shawn said. I felt the heat rush to my cheeks as I blushed at his words. I wasn't used to being called gorgeous and beautiful a lot, but that's what Shawn always called me.
"How are you doing?" I asked.
"I'm good. How are you sweetheart?" He asked. I smiled at the nickname.
"I'm good. I miss you." I said.
"I miss you too. I was thinking, and um, Valentine's Day is in a couple of weeks, and it's our first Valentine's Day together. What do you think of us going to dinner and then I could get a hotel room nearby and we could spend the weekend together? Would you like that?" Shawn asked. My smile widened.
"I would absolutely love that. Where should we go to dinner?" I asked.
"I don't know. Somewhere nice, somewhere in the city. What time do you get out of class on Fridays? One o'clock, right?" Shawn asked.
"Yeah, how did you know?" I asked.
"You sent me your class schedule at the beginning of the semester, remember?" Shawn asked.
"Oh, right, I forgot." I said with a giggle and a blush. Shawn chuckled.
"It's okay baby. I'll figure out the hotel and the reservations for the restaurant, it's going to be somewhere nice and fancy, so we should get dressed up nice for it. Can you send me the address to your school and I'll pick you up?" Shawn asked.
"Yeah, of course." I said.
"Okay. I have to get back to the studio, but we'll figure everything out. I'll talk to you later baby girl." Shawn said.
"Okay. Bye baby boy." I said.
"Bye." Shawn said, and then we hung up. We hadn't said I love you to each other yet, but I knew that I had fallen for him a while ago.
Shawn and I figured everything out by the time that Valentine's Day came around. I packed my stuff up for the weekend, and Shawn picked up the suitcase at my house before he picked me up from school. When he picked me up, we would go straight to his hotel room, put our stuff in the room, and then go to a local park until we had to get back to the hotel to get ready for dinner. I had already gotten him some presents that I hoped he would like, which I had safely packed in my suitcase.
Once class ended on Valentine's Day, I felt excitement bubble up inside of me. I stepped out of class, a smile plastered on my face. I made a stop in the girl's bathroom to make sure that my hair looked okay, which it did, and so did my makeup. I stepped out of the bathroom and then headed for the parking lot. My smile widened even more when I saw Shawn standing leaning against his rental car. His smile widened when he saw me, and I walked faster towards him.
"Wow! Look at you! You look so cute." Shawn said once I got closer to him. I was wearing a black long sleeved shirt with golden moons on it and blue skinny jeans with dark boots.
"Thank you. You look really good babe." I said to him as I hugged him. He was wearing a blue long sleeve and black skinny jeans with his signature black boots.
"Thank you. Ready to go to the hotel?" Shawn asked. I nodded.
"Yeah. Do you mind if I put my backpack in the backseat?" I asked. Shawn shook his head as he opened the back door for me.
"That's fine Y/n." Shawn said. I put my backpack in the backseat, and then got in on the passenger side. As soon as we both got into the car, we turned to each other and smiled.
"I've been dying to kiss you." I said. Shawn chuckled and leaned over to put his lips on mine. I immediately felt the same insanely amazing feelings that I always get. I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my tummy, and I felt sparks shoot through me like fireworks. Shawn and I soon pulled away, and then we drove to the hotel. We checked in, and when we got to our room, I saw that there were rose petals sprinkled all over the bed. I turned to Shawn and smiled at him.
"Do you like it?" He asked with a smile as he brought our suitcases in. I nodded.
"I love it. Thank you so much for this." I said.
"You're welcome baby girl." He said. We put our luggage in the corner of the room and then turned to each other.
"Go lay on the bed babe, I want to take a picture of you." I said. He laughed before going to lay on the bed. I took a few pictures of him and then smiled at him. He sat up and moved so he was leaning against the headboard and opened up his arms for me to come into.
"Y/n." He said as he motioned for me to come closer to him. I smiled and crawled onto the bed and into his arms.
"Happy Valentine's Day Shawn." I said. He smiled at him and gently kissed my cheek before looking at me.
"Happy Valentine's Day Y/n. I want to tell you something, but um, I'm a bit nervous." Shawn said. I reached out for one of his hands, and gently squeezed.
"It's okay babe, it's just me, and I'm not going anywhere." I said with a soft smile. Relief washed over his face before he kissed my forehead and then looked at me. He used his thumb to gently rub my hand as he spoke to me.
"You always know just what to say to make me feel better, and I appreciate that so much. I appreciate you so much. Y/n, the moment that I saw you for the first time, I fell in love with you. Then, we sat down on our first date, and the more that I've gotten to know you, the more I want to learn about you. You're such an incredible person. You're sweet, and you're loving and caring and nice and you're every nice word ever. Plus, you're the most beautiful, most gorgeous being in the world. Ever since we met, you've become my best friend, and I want you to know that I want a whole life with you. Marriage, kids, all of it. I'm so beyond in love with you Y/n Y/l/n. I love you." Shawn said. My smile was huge.
"I love you too Shawn." I said. His smile widened even more.
"Really?" He asked. I nodded.
"Yes! Of course. I love you so much." I said.
"Oh my gosh this is incredible." Shawn said before placing a passionate but loving kiss on my lips. When he pulled his lips away from mine, it was only to kiss all over my face, which made me laugh hysterically. He then looked at me with such love in his eyes that I thought that my heart was going to burst. "I love you."
"I love you too." I said. He kissed me again and then smiled at me.
"Should we head to the park?" Shawn asked. I gave him one more kiss and then nodded as I got up out of the bed.
"Yeah. So, um, we haven't gone public yet, and I'm not ready to go public yet. What if people take pictures of us? Are we still going to kiss and hold hands and stuff like that?" I asked Shawn as he came over to me. He wrapped his arms around my waist, and I wrapped my arms around his broad shoulders and looked at him.
"My love, we just said I love you to each other for the first time, and it's Valentine's Day. Let's just try to be a normal couple for today and let's not care if anyone's watching. Let's just be ourselves. If anyone asks if we're dating, I'll just tell them that we're going to keep that between us for now. I love you Y/n." Shawn said.
"I love you too Shawn." I said. We knew that it was cold out, so Shawn grabbed his pink hoodie and put it on, and then he handed me one of his dark jackets that zips up.
"Wear this baby, I don't want you getting cold." Shawn said. I smiled at him as I slipped on the jacket.
"Are we going to do presents after dinner?" I asked.
"Is that what you want to do?" Shawn asked as he held his hand out for me to take. I interlaced his fingers with mine, and as our skin touched I felt electricity spark through me yet I felt safe and warm at the same time.
"Yeah. I really hope you like your presents." I said. Shawn gently squeezed my hand.
"I'm going to love it baby, I promise. Now that I think about it, my present for you might not be really romantic. I should've gotten you a necklace or something." He said.
"Shawn, I'm going to love whatever you've gotten me." I said. We stepped outside and soon got to the park. I was a bit warm with the jacket on, so I took it off.
"Here, let me hold that for you sweetheart." Shawn said.
"Are you sure?" I asked. He nodded as he took it from me.
"Of course." He said. We sat down on a park bench and faced each other.
"I like this. I like being a normal couple." I said. Shawn nodded as he put his index finger on my cheek and gently rubbed it, causing me to smile. Soon, his lips were on mine. I couldn't help but put my hand on his soft cheek as we kissed. When we pulled away, smiling at each other, I ran my fingers through Shawn's hair, and he closed his eyes for a brief moment.
"That felt nice." Shawn said as I scooted closer to him. He wrapped his arm around my shoulders and I rested my cheek against his shoulder.
"Do you want me to rub your head later? I can do it after dinner if you want?" I asked. Shawn nodded before kissing my forehead.
"I would love that. I love you Y/n." Shawn said. I picked my head up and looked at him, hoping that he could see all of my love for him just by the look on my face.
"I love you too Shawn. You make me really happy, and I really appreciate that." I said. Shawn smiled and kissed me again, but it was just a quick kiss this time. He then began to rub the back of my head.
"When are you going to be on spring break?" Shawn asked.
"Next month, I'm not sure of exactly when, but I can find out. Why?" I said and asked.
"Well, I would love it if you came to Toronto for spring break and met my sister and my parents. What do you think?" He asked.
"Do you think I'm ready for that?" I asked as he gently kissed my cheek and then looked at me. He reached out one of his hands for mine and we interlaced our cold fingers.
"Yup. You'll do great baby, I promise, and my family will love you. They already do." Shawn said.
"What do you mean?" I asked. Shawn played with my fingers as his beautiful, mesmerizing caramel looked into my own eyes.
"I've told them about you and how beautiful and wonderful and smart you are. They know how I feel about you and they know that you make me really happy, and that makes my family really happy. They already love you baby girl." Shawn said before kissing my fingers. I smiled at him.
"What are your mum's favorite flower?" I asked. Shawn thought for a moment.
"I'm not sure. Why?" He asked.
"I want to get her flowers when I meet her." I said. Shawn's smile widened and then he kissed me on the lips, and then on my forehead.
"I adore you. You're such an incredible person with such an incredible heart." Shawn said. I blushed at his words, kissed him, and then buried my face in his neck. He laughed and held me close to him.
"I love you." I said. I heard him hum in contentment because of my words.
"I love you too." Shawn said. He held me for a bit longer, rubbing my arm to keep me warm. I closed my eyes, trying to memorize this feeling of being so close to him. I picked my head up and looked at him again.
"Will you promise me something please?" I asked. Shawn nodded.
"Anything." He said.
"We'll always make the distance work. Even if time zones are making things crazy, even if we have to stay up late just to text or call or Facetime, promise me we'll always make the distance work." I said. Shawn smiled and nodded.
"Of course we will baby girl. I promise you we'll always make it work." Shawn said. I smiled and kissed him on his sweet and beautiful lips. My hand, instinctively, went to his jaw as I kissed him, and when I pulled away, I held his hand with mine. We smiled at each other for a moment, taking each other in.
"Is this real? Am I really dating the man that I've had a crush on since 2014?" I asked with a smile. Shawn threw his head back with laughter and then nodded at me.
"This is real, and yes, you're really dating the man that you've had a crush on since 2014. But, when you first started having that crush on me, I was just a boy." Shawn said. I laughed and then smiled at him.
"Well, you may have been just a boy at that time, but boy have you grown into a man." I said as I let my eyes travel to his arms that were, sadly, covered by his pink hoodie. Shawn laughed at what I had said.
"You're so cute. It's cold, we should head back to the hotel where it's warmer." Shawn said. I nodded as we stood up. Shawn interlaced his fingers with mine, and we headed back to the hotel, happy to be with one another. When we walked into the hotel room, I immediately turned to Shawn and opened my arms. He smiled at me as he gently pulled me in for a hug. I wrapped my arms around his shoulders and he wrapped his arms around my waist as he buried his face in my neck. I ran my fingers through his hair.
"I like it when you bury your face in my neck." I said. I could feel his lips turn into a smile before he placed a gentle kiss on my neck. His big hands soothingly rubbed my back. He lifted his head up and looked at me with a warm and loving smile.
"We have about an hour before we have to start getting ready. Should we exchange presents now?" Shawn asked. I instantly got very excited and nodded.
"Yes! I hope you like your presents." I said as I ran over to my suitcase and got the bag that I had put his gifts in. I heard Shawn laughing while he went to his suitcase.
"You're so cute." He said. I got the bag and sat on the couch that was in the hotel room, and then Shawn sat next to me with a bag in his hands.
"Who should go first? Do you want to go first?" I asked. He nodded.
"Sure. Um, I probably should've gotten you something more romantic, but I remember that you told me that your favorite perfume in middle school was one that your friend gave you. It was Warm Vanilla Sugar, and then you ran out, and you were sad that you ran out of it, and Bath and Body Works had a deal, buy three, get two free, so I hope you like this." Shawn said as he handed me the bag. I looked in and my eyes widened.
"Oh my gosh Shawn, thank you so much!" I said. Inside were five bottles of my favorite perfume. I was so touched that he remembered such a small detail about me.
"Are you sure you like it? I can take it back if you want." He asked nervously. I looked at him and shook my head.
"No, this is perfect. Thank you for remembering that little detail about me. That means a lot to me." I said. He smiled and gave me a kiss.
"I remember everything about you, darling." He said. I smiled and gave him a loving kiss on the lips. I put the bag to the side and then grabbed my bag that had my gifts for him.
"Ready to see my gifts for you?" I asked. Shawn nodded.
"Of course." He said with a smile. At the top of the bag, wrapped in cute gift wrap paper, were two coffee mugs. Shawn's smile widened when he saw them.
"I know how much you love different coffee mugs, you're always using different coffee mugs in your question and answers sessions, so this coffee mug has President Kennedy's presidential seal on one side, and his signature on the other, and this is a Harvard coffee mug." I said. He smiled at his gifts and then at me.
"I love them so much Y/n. Thank you for these." He said.
"You're welcome. There's other stuff in the bag." I said. Shawn put the coffee mugs aside and then looked in the bag and pulled out the maroon colored Harvard hoodie that I bought for him. His eyes widened and so did his smile.
"A new Harvard hoodie! Thank you so much babe!" He said. I smiled and kissed his cheek.
"You're welcome." I said. He put the hoodie next to him and then pulled out the last gift. It was a blue t-shirt with a nice quote on it that President Kennedy had said. Shawn read the quote out loud.
"One person can make a difference, and everyone should try." Shawn read with a smile.
"Do you like it?" I asked. He nodded at me and then kissed me.
"I love it baby. Thank you for all of my gifts." He said.
"You're welcome." I said. Shawn looked at his watch.
"We should get ready for dinner." He said. I nodded and went to my suitcase. I grabbed the dress and then went into the bathroom. I put on the red dress that was off the shoulders and went just below my knee, and I put on some red heels that went with my dress. I put my hair up in a bun and put on some light makeup, just eyeliner, mascare, eye shadow and some lip gloss. I opened the door a bit and saw Shawn standing near the bed. He was wearing gray dress pants, a white button down shirt, and a gray jacket.
"Shawn?" I asked as I stepped out of the bathroom. He looked up at me and his eyes widened as his jaw just about fell to the floor.
"Wow." He said. I smiled at him.
"Do you like my dress?" I asked as I watched his eyes go up and down my outfit.
"Wow." He said again. I giggled and blushed before walking closer to him. When I put my hands on his chest and looked up at him, I noticed that he gulped a little.
"You look really handsome." I said.
"You look absolutely stunning." He said. I blushed and smiled at him.
"Thank you. Come here, let's take a picture in the mirror before we go." I said. Shawn smiled and we went in front of the mirror. Shawn immediately wrapped both of his arms around my waist, and I let one of my hands rest on his arm, my other hand holding the phone. Shawn smiled as he rested his head against mine, and I took the picture. He then looked at me in the mirror.
"I love all of the dress, but I really love this part." Shawn said as he pointed to the front of the dress where it was cut a bit to show some cleavage. I blushed at his words, which made him laugh.
"Come on babe, let's head to dinner." I said as I turned around. He nodded.
"You should borrow my jacket baby, I don't want you getting cold." He said as he handed me the same jacket that he let me borrow before. I put it on but I didn't zip it up, and gave him a kiss as my way of saying thank you. Shawn smiled at me and we got in the car and left for the restaurant. He took me to a fancy restaurant on the north end of Boston. He let the guy in charge of the valet park the car, and then we went in.
"This place is nice." I said when we sat down. Shawn nodded.
"Only the best for my girl." He said. I smiled at him.
"I love being your girl." I said.
"Good, because that's what you're always going to be." Shawn said.
"Sounds good to me." I said. Soon, we ordered our food, and I had gotten spaghetti with no sauce, just butter.
"Why didn't you get any sauce on your spaghetti?" Shawn asked once the waiter had walked away.
"Because I'm the messiest eater you will ever meet in your whole life, so if I had gotten it with butter, it wouldn't have been a pretty sight." I said.
"That's crazy, you're always a pretty sight." Shawn said with a smirk. I blushed at his words and then took a sip of my water. I had wanted to order wine so I could be fancier but my twenty first birthday wasn't for a couple more months.
"So, I have to talk to my mom, and I need to get my passport, but as long as everything's good, I'll be able to spend spring break with you next month." I said. Shawn smiled and nodded.
"Yup. I'll buy your plane ticket." He said.
"You don't have to do that." I said.
"Are you crazy? Of course I do. Let me do this for you baby girl." Shawn said as he reached across the table and held my hands. I thought for a moment before nodding.
"Okay. Thank you." I said.
"You're welcome." He said.
"What are we going to do while I'm in Canada?" I asked. Shawn thought for a moment before smiling.
"I'll ask my friend Brian to pick you up from the airport because if I were to pick you up, that would bring a lot of attention. You'll meet my parents and my sister, and we can schedule it so on another day, my friends come over and you meet them. We can go to the club if you want." Shawn said. I nodded.
"Yeah. I've never been to a club before." I said.
"Really?" Shawn asked. I nodded.
"Yup." I said. Soon, our food arrived. After dinner, I put Shawn's jacket back on, and we stepped outside. While we waited for valet, I wrapped my arms around Shawn's torso, and he wrapped his arms around my shoulders.
"Hi sweetheart." He whispered in my ear. I smiled as I felt him gently kiss the top of my ear, and I rubbed his back a little bit.
"Hi baby boy. Thank you for today." I said as I felt him rub my back gently. I couldn't help but close my eyes at the feeling.
"You're welcome. What do you want to do when we get back to the hotel?" Shawn asked me. I thought for a moment before answering.
"Cuddle. I just want to cuddle with you for the rest of the night." I said. Shawn kissed the top of my head, causing me to smile.
"That sounds perfect, my love." Shawn said. I nodded my head against his chest, and we stood there, waiting for the car to come. As soon as it did, Shawn opened up the door for me, and we drove back to the hotel. I took the jacket off and then turned to Shawn.
"Would you mind unzipping my dress please?" I asked. He shook his head and unzipped my dress.
"There you go my beautiful girl." He said.
"Thank you. I'm just going to change into pajamas." I said.
"Okay." He said. I went to the suitcase, grabbed some sweatpants and a hoodie, and went into the bathroom. I got changed, took off my makeup, and put my hair down. I put on my slippers, and stepped out of the bathroom. Shawn was wearing a dark blue long sleeved shirt and gray sweatpants. He smiled at me and opened his arms up for me to come into. I couldn't help but smile at him.
"Can I sit on your lap please?" I asked. He nodded.
"Of course you can." He said. I sat down on his lap and he immediately wrapped his arms around me. I let my head rest on his shoulder, in the crook of his neck as I closed my eyes, and I sighed, loving the feeling of being in his strong, safe arms.
"I love you." I whispered as Shawn began to rub my arms.
"I love you too." He whispered back. We sat there in silence for a little bit. It felt so wonderful knowing that we would get to spend the whole weekend together.
"I have Monday off from school." I reminded him.
"I know. We can spend more time together that day too." He said. I nodded my head against his neck again.
"So you want to marry me someday?" I asked with a smile.
"Of course I do. I've known that since the moment I laid eyes on you. Would you want to marry me someday too?" Shawn asked. I nodded.
"Definitely. Do you, um, do you think that it would be okay if I took your last name once we're married?" I asked nervously. Shawn gently squeezed my arm as he responded.
"I would absolutely love that. Y/n Mendes. Y/n Y/m/n Mendes. Damn that sounds perfect, doesn't it baby girl?" Shawn asked. I moved so my head was no longer in his neck, and I nodded as he smiled at me.
"It does. I hope you know that when we're married, oh my gosh, I'm going to be the proudest wife ever!" I said. Shawn chuckled.
"Well I'm going to be the proudest husband ever. I'm already the proudest boyfriend ever." Shawn said with a huge smile plastered on his face. I moved over so I was straddling his lap.
"You're proud to be my boyfriend?" I asked. Shawn nodded.
"Of course I am! You're such an incredible woman Y/n Y/l/n. You're smart, you're nice, you're sweet, you're funny, you can be sassy when you want to be, you are your own damn person and you're not going to let anybody change that. You're strong, powerful, damn baby girl, you're unstoppable. Growing up, I always thought that when I found the one, I would move mountains for her if she needed me to, but now that I've met you, I know that you are so damn powerful that you can move those mountains yourself. You're the most determined person I've met. Once you set your mind to something, it's going to happen. You're so incredible, and I can't wait to be by your side when you get your associate's degree, your bachelor's degree, your master's degree, all of it. I'm always going to be right there, cheering you on, supporting you, loving you, encouraging you, everything. I love you." Shawn said. No one had ever said anything like that to me before. I hugged Shawn tight as happy tears welled up in my eyes.
"I love you too." I said, but it came out in a whisper.
"Are you okay?" He asked. I nodded my head against his shoulder.
"Yeah. No one has ever said anything like that to me before so it means a lot to me. Thank you for saying all of that." I said. I sat back in his lap and held his face in my hands as he smiled at me.
"You're welcome. I meant every word of it too." He said.
"I know you did. You always mean everything you say, and I love you for that." I said before kissing him. Shawn slowly sat back on the couch and he held my body so I would sit back with him. I pulled away from the kiss and got off his lap.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
"Yeah, I just need to put my hair up or else it's going to get in our faces." I said. He chuckled and nodded.
"Oh, okay." He said. I put my hair up and then walked back over to him and sat on his lap again.
"Now, where were we?" I asked with a smirk.
"I think we were at the park where I was about to French kiss you." Shawn said with a smirk that matched the one on my face. I giggled and put my lips on his. He held me close to him as we kissed.
After kissing for a bit, once we needed to catch our breaths, I got off of Shawn's lap and sat so my feet were in his lap. I grabbed my phone and he grabbed his. I opened up Instagram and instantly saw that people had posted videos of Shawn and I. There was a video from while we were waiting for valet to come back with the car. My back was to the camera, but you could see Shawn rubbing my back and kissing the top of my head. You could tell it was Shawn because, not only could you see his face, but the swallow tattoo on his hand.
"That moment when you're walking down the street and Shawn Mendes and some girl are waiting for valet across the street from you." The person wrote on their snapchat video of us. The next video of us was taken at the park. It was when I held his face while we kissed and then ran my fingers through his hair afterwards.
"Hello to Shawn Mendes and the girl he's kissing on Valentine's Day." The person wrote. This was the first time that fans had spotted us together. There was another video from the park of us cuddling. There was a picture of us from dinner, and you could tell that it was Shawn even though his face wasn't shown because the swallow tattoo was shown. I looked at Shawn and sat up. He was looking at his phone.
"Are you seeing the same things I'm seeing?" I asked. He looked at me.
"Videos of us from today?" He asked. I nodded.
"Yeah. What do we do?" I asked. Shawn turned to me, and I scooted closer to him and rested my head on his chest and he held me.
"We just be ourselves. We're not ready to go public yet, so we're not going to say anything, okay?" Shawn asked. I nodded.
"Okay. Do you think that we could also hold off a little longer on you following me on Instagram? My profile picture is you and I from the day we met, and if people see that you follow me, and they see that picture, they're going to connect the dots, and send me mean messages." I asked and said.
"Of course baby." Shawn said.
"Thank you. Are you tired?" I asked as he kissed the top of my head.
"Not really. What about you?" He asked. I shook my head.
"I'm not all that tired either." I said. I sat up and Shawn and I stayed up for a bit long, talking about what we want for ourselves, and for our relationship in the future. It was really nice to talk about so much with him, and we ended up going to bed around two thirty in the morning. I love Shawn so much, and I'm so glad that we were able to spend Valentine's Day together.
