158. Rose's Accident
Shawn's point of view
My oldest child, Rose Lucille Mendes, is a horseback rider. She's seventeen years old. Her brother, Jake, is fifteen, and her sister Julia is thirteen. My wife, Y/n Mendes, Jake, Julia, and I were about to watch Rose compete in a jumping competition. She's been riding horses since she was little, so she's extremely good at it, but jumping has always been her strong point.
"Ready sweet pea?" I asked Rose as she put her helmet on. She nodded.
"Yeah. I don't know why I always feel nervous about these competitions. I've done them so many times." Rose said.
"I still get nervous every time I perform on stage. It's normal. Think Airborne is ready?" I asked as I patted her horse. Rose nodded.
"Of course he is." Rose said. I nodded and smiled.
"Good luck honey. Your mom, your siblings and I will be standing right against the fence so we can watch, okay?" I asked. Rose nodded.
"Okay." She said as she got on her horse.
"I love you. Good luck." I said.
"I love you too. Thanks dad." She said. I leaned against the fence as I stood next to my wife and kids. I put my arm around Y/n's shoulders and she leaned on me. I kissed the top of her head and she rubbed my back a little.
"She said that she was nervous." I said.
"She always gets nervous but she always does great." Y/n said. I nodded and then kissed the top of her head again. Rose soon entered the riding ring where the jumps were and Y/n and I moved so our arms were leaning against the fence. We clapped as Rose jumped over one of the jumps and cleared it, and then did it again, and then again, and then again. But then, as Rose and Airborne approached the next jump, something spooked her horse. Airborne bucked Rose off and Rose landed on the ground. I jumped over the fence so I could get to my oldest child as others were already running towards her.
"ROSE!" I yelled.
"Sir, you need to step out of the ring." Someone said to me.
"I'm her father, I'm staying." I said to the person.
"What's her name?" Another person asked.
"Rose. My daughter's name is Rose Lucille Mendes. Rose, can you hear me honey? Rose, it's Daddy. Can you hear me Rosie?" I asked. Her eyes were closed and she wasn't moving, nor was she responding in any way.
"She needs to go to the hospital. Can someone carry her out of the ring?" A guy asked.
"I'm her dad, I'll carry her out of the ring. Will someone get my wife and kids please?" I asked as I looked towards Patty, Rose's trainer/coach. Patty nodded.
"I'm on it." She said. I nodded.
"Thank you." I said. I then picked Rose up and carried her over to where they had an ambulance waiting - at first I thought that it had gotten there quickly, and then I realized that they had the ambulance here just in case something like this were to happen. I laid Rose down on the stretcher as my wife and kids came up to us.
"Shawn? How is she?" Y/n asked. I looked at my wife and I could see the fear, worry, and concern in her eyes.
"She's not responding. She's not awake. I'll ride with her to the ambulance." I said. Y/n nodded.
"Okay. What hospital?" Y/n asked.
"We're taking her to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston." One of the EMT's said. Y/n and I nodded.
"We'll meet you there. I'll call our parents." Y/n said. I nodded. I gave my wife a kiss on the cheek, gave Jake and Julia brief hugs, and then got in the ambulance with Rose. They had taken off her helmet. I sat there, watching her as we rode into Boston. We soon arrived - the ambulance had their sirens and lights going so we could get there quicker - at the hospital and were rushed in.
"Mr. Mendes?" Someone, a nurse, asked. I stood up but stayed next to Rose's hospital bed.
"Yes?" I asked.
"Um, due to your celebrity, Rose is going to get her own, private room. We just wanted to let you know." She said.
"Can we have a second bed in the room please? I won't be leaving her side, no matter how long she stays in the hospital." I asked and said.
"I'll talk to someone." The nurse said as she went to step out of the room.
"Before you leave, please let whoever you talk to know that Rose Lucille Mendes is my daughter and there is no way in hell that I'll be leaving her side. I either sleep in a bed that's put in her room, or I sleep in a chair. Either way, I'm staying with her." I said. The nurse, Jenny, nodded.
"I understand." She said and then left the room. I had texted Y/n saying what room we were in. I sat down in the chair next to Rose's bed, and looked at my daughter.
"Shawn?" Y/n asked. I looked over at her and that's when I let the emotions out. Tears streamed down my face as I hugged my wife.
"Our little girl. Our Rosie." I cried. Y/n cried too and then pulled away from the hug a little. She held my face in her hands as she tried to stop her crying.
"I know. And I know that we feel like crying right now, but Jake and Julia are right here, and they're seeing us like this. We have to be strong, okay? We have to be strong for Jake, we have to be strong for Julia, and we have to be strong for Rose. There will be a time to cry later. My parents and your parents are on their way." Y/n said. I nodded.
"Okay." I said.
"Daddy?" Julia asked. I looked at her. She was looking at Rose.
"Yes honey?" I asked.
"Is Rose going to be okay?" Julia asked. I honestly didn't know the answer to that. I sighed.
"A doctor came in to check on her but he didn't have much information. They're going to move her into a different room for privacy and I'm going to stay here for as long as Rose is here." I said.
"How long will that be?" Julia asked. I looked at Rose, my precious daughter who was hooked up to machines, and sighed.
"I don't know." I said. I felt a hand on my back. I looked at Y/n and wrapped an arm around her. She leaned on me. Soon, my mother in law showed up.
"Hey, what can I do?" She asked.
"Would you mind taking Jake and Julia into the waiting room for a little bit please?" Y/n asked. Her mom nodded.
"Sure." She said. Jake and Julia went with her. Y/n and I looked at each other and began to cry. I held my wife close to me and she held me close to her.
"Our little girl. I'm so scared Y/n. I'm so scared." I said. Y/n pulled away from the hug and held my face in her hands. I could tell that she was scared and worried too.
"I know honey, I know, but she's going to be okay. She's a Mendes, and Mendes's can get through anything." Y/n said. I nodded and gave her a quick kiss.
"You're right. I'm going to spend the night here with her. When she gets moved to another room, I think they're going to put a bed in that room so I can sleep in the room as her. I told them that they either get me a bed to sleep in, or I sleep in a chair next to her bed, either way, I'm staying with my daughter." I said. Y/n nodded. We sat together, watching Rose for a little bit longer.
"She'll be okay." Y/n said. It sounded more like she was saying it to herself than to me, but I nodded before kissing the top of my wife's head. Y/n got her mom and the kids, and we all stayed together for a little bit. Eventually, the kids were tired, so my mother in law drove them home. Rose was moved to another room, and they put a bed in there for me. I looked at Y/n. She looked tired.
"You should go home honey. Get some rest. I can tell that you're tired." I said. Y/n nodded as she looked at Rose.
"Yeah. You'll be okay here?" Y/n asked as she looked at me. I nodded and gave her a quick but reassuring kiss.
"Yeah." I said. She nodded.
"Okay. I love you. Keep me updated please." She said. I nodded.
"I will. I love you too honey." I said. She stood up, brushed some hair out of Rose's face, and then kissed Rose's forehead. My wife then turned to me, gave me another kiss and a hug, and then went home. I laid in my own bed, but watched Rose for a bit before falling asleep.
For the next week, family and friends visited. People sent flowers, teddy bears, and all kinds of gifts. Y/n came to visit every day. I continued to sleep in the bed next to Rose's. I would sing to her sometimes. Usually it would be the songs that I sang to her when she was in her mother's belly or when she was born. She always loved it when I sang Isn't She Lovely to her. I fell asleep in the hospital bed next to her, wondering when my daughter would wake up.
"Dad? Dad? Dad?" I heard a female voice ask. My eyes snapped open and I looked at Rose. Her eyes were open and she was looking at me.
"Rose! You're awake, oh my gosh." I said as I got out of bed and hugged her as I began to cry.
"Why are we in a hospital? What happened?" Rose asked.
"Your horse bucked you off. You've been in a coma for a week. Oh my gosh my little girl is awake. Let me get a nurse." I said as I pushed the button to call a nurse.
"Wait, so if I was the one that got bucked off a horse, why are you here too?" Rose asked.
"Because there's no way that I'm leaving my daughter alone. Your mom is with your siblings at home but she's come to visit every day." I said. Rose nodded and a nurse came in. I took out my phone and called my wife even though it was three in the morning.
"Hello?" Y/n asked.
"She's awake." I said.
"Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh that's great! I'll be there as soon as I can." Y/n said.
"Okay. I love you." I said.
"I love you too." She said. We hung up and the doctor came in and talked to Rose and I. He made one thing absolutely clear: no more horseback riding. Rose didn't exactly like that, but I didn't exactly like the idea of her getting back on a horse. When we talked to Y/n about it, Y/n agreed with me. After a little bit, Rose was able to come home. I love my kids so much and I'm so glad that Rose is okay.
