156. You Get Upset With Rose
A/n: Explicit language in this one! Anyways, please enjoy this imagine. Okay, without further ado, let's begin, shall we?
I was sitting at the dining room table, eating dinner with my husband of eighteen years, Shawn Mendes, and our three kids. Our oldest child is Rose Lucille Mendes, she's seventeen, our second child is Jacob Alexander Scott Mendes, also known as Jake, and he's fifteen, and our third child is Julia Kennedy Mendes, and she's thirteen.
Rose and Jake are named after people that were in my life, but not Julia. Rose is named after my great-great Aunt Rose who lived to be 102 and was the definition of style, class, elegance, and grace. Her middle name, Lucille, is for my great grandmother who was practically a saint. The worst word that she ever said was damn, and she never spoke badly about anyone. Jake is named after my former next door neighbor Jake, who passed away when he was twenty one years old. His middle names, Alexander, and Scott, are for two of my uncles.
"You know, I feel like now that the kids are getting older, they should hear more about the people that they're named after." Shawn said to me before taking a bite of his dinner. He's home for now, but he has to go back on tour in a couple of weeks. I nodded.
"That's true. Well, Uncle Johnny and I can both tell Jake stories about the original Jake. Shawn, you know the stories about my Uncle Alex since you met him, and I can tell the stories about Uncle Scottie. I have to be honest, I don't remember Aunt Rose a lot because I was young when I last saw her, but we do have a recording of her speaking about her upbringing. I'll have to try and find it. We also have a five minute recording of Gramma Lucy on my phone, and Meimei and I can tell you stories about her." I said.
"Gram had an interesting life." Shawn said. I nodded.
"She really did. I mean, at one point, her husband took off, and she had seven kids and had nowhere to put them, so she ended up having to put them in an orphanage." I said.
"Wait, really?" Rose asked. I nodded.
"Yup. She had to go find her husband, great grandpa George, and then she took the boys out of the orphanage first so they could go to work, and then she took the girls out. She eventually found my great grandfather, but she had nowhere to put the kids but in an orphanage for a bit." I said before taking a bite of my food. Rose's eyes were wide, and she looked like she was processing this.
"And this is who I'm named after?" Rose asked. Shawn and I nodded.
"Yup." We said.
"Wow. Putting her kids in an orphanage sounds like something a bitch would do." Rose said.
"Rose!" Shawn said as my fork fell onto the plate. Shawn and I don't raise our voices at our kids. If we're upset with them, we speak sternly. This time, not only did I speak sternly, but I raised my voice as anger washed over me.
"Rose Lucille Mendes, do not ever speak of the woman that you're named after like that ever again. Gramma had to put her kids in an orphanage because she had nowhere else to put them while she looked for her husband who had taken off. Gramma Lucy was one of the strongest, most resilient woman that I have ever known. She went through so much, yet she never spoke badly about anyone, not even my great grandfather." I said. I then began to list some of the other things that Gram had to go through, and none of it was good. "Rose, do you know why your father and I named you after Gram?"
"No." Rose said. She looked guilty. She knew that what she had said was wrong.
"We named you after her because she was practically a saint. The worst word that she ever said was damn, and that's how Meimei knew that she was about to pass away. Gram faced so many hardships in her life, but she was always there for people, no matter what. She was not a bitch for doing something that she had to do, she had no other choice. You know what? I need some fresh air. Excuse me." I said as I got up.
Shawn's point of view
"Dad, I'm so sorry. I didn't, I didn't realize how mom felt about Gram, I didn't realize how much Gram had gone through." Rose said. I nodded and set my fork down.
"It's okay that you didn't know, and thank you for apologizing. Your mother, for as long as I've known her, has always been fiercely protective of Gram and Gram's memory. I'm going to go check on your mom, but when she comes back in, you should apologize to her too please." I said as I got up. Rose nodded.
"Okay." She said. I got my shoes on. I had heard the door to our back deck open and shut. I stepped outside and saw that Y/n was sitting in one of the Adirondack chairs. Her shoulders were shaking - she was crying - and she had part of her phone up to her ear. As I got closer, I realized that she was listening to the recording of Gram. I quietly sat down in the Adirondack chair next to my wife. She looked over at me, paused the recording, got up, and sat in my lap. I held her close to me as she continued to cry.
"I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry that I got so upset with Rose. It's just, you know how protective I am of Gram, and so to hear my own daughter, who's named after Gram, say that was just... I got so angry. Gram went through so much in her life so when Rose said that, it really, really upset me. I know that we don't yell at our kids, and I'm so sorry that I did Shawn." I said.
"It's okay my love. You were hurt and angry. I know about the things that Gram went through, and I know how protective you are of Gramma Lucy." I said. Y/n leaned her head on my shoulder.
"Shawn?" She asked.
"Yes darling?" I asked.
"You don't think that Gram was a bitch, do you?" She asked. My eyes widened.
"Oh my gosh, no honey, not at all. If I thought that she was a bitch, I would've said no to naming Rose after her." I said as I rubbed my wife's back and shoulders. Y/n was still crying a bit.
"I miss Gram." Y/n said. I held her even closer to me.
"I know you do honey. What can I do to make you feel better?" I asked. Y/n held me tight.
"I know that the kids, and our dinner, are inside. But, could you just, could you just hold me for right now please?" She asked. I kissed the top of her head.
"Of course I will honey. I'll hold me for as long as you need me to." I said. She nodded her head against my shoulder. After a little bit, her crying calmed down. She picked her head up and looked at me.
"Can I have a kiss?" She asked. I smiled at her.
"Of course you can. You never have to ask honey." I said. She smiled and put her lips on mine. I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my stomach, and I felt sparks shoot through me like fireworks. We soon pulled away and smiled at each other. She kissed my cheek gently.
"We should probably go back inside." Y/n said as she stood up. I nodded and stood up too.
"Yeah. Come here baby, I want to give my wife a hug." I said. She smiled and wrapped her arms around my shoulders. I wrapped my arms around her waist.
"You're my safe place." She said. I smiled and kissed her cheek.
"Well you're mine." I said. She smiled at me as we pulled away from the hug. I held my hand out for her to take. As we interlaced our fingers, I felt electricity spark through me, yet I felt safe and warm at the same time. We began to walk towards the house.
"Thank you for always being able to get me to relax and calm down. I swear, just your presence alone makes me feel better. I'm so grateful for you Shawn." Y/n said. I stopped walking and pulled her in for another hug.
"Well Mrs. Y/n Mendes, I'm so grateful for you too." I said. She smiled at me and then we went back inside. We continued to hold hands as we kicked our shoes off and went into the dining room, where the kids still were.
"Hi. Um, mom, I'm really sorry about what I said. I shouldn't have said it, and it was very wrong of me to do that." Rose said to Y/n. Y/n nodded.
"Thank you for apologizing." Y/n said. After dinner, and after the dishes were done, Y/n and I relaxed in our bed upstairs. I got a notification on my phone that Rose had posted. I unlocked it and smiled.
"Babe, look at what Rose posted on Instagram. I haven't read the caption yet." I said as I handed my phone to my wife. She smiled.
"We're so cute." Y/n said. I nodded as I chuckled. Rose had posted three pictures. One of them was a picture of Y/n sitting on my lap when we were outside. Another one was a picture of Y/n and I hugging, and the last one was us holding hands as we walked back inside. Y/n read the caption and smiled before handing my phone back to me. I read the caption.
"Earlier, I was a brat. I said something that really upset my mom, to the point where she stepped outside. My dad stepped outside and immediately comforted my mom. I love my parents relationship so much. I feel very bad for what I said, and I apologized to my mom. I just wanted to share this beautiful picture of my amazing parents who I love so much." Rose captioned it.
"I'm going to go give her a hug." Y/n said. I nodded.
"Okay babe. I love you." I said. She smiled at me.
"I love you too." She said. She got out of bed and came back a little bit later. I had set my phone aside.
"Ready for bed my love?" I asked. Y/n smiled and nodded.
"Yeah." She said as she got under the covers. We turned off the lights that are besides are bed and my wife cuddled up to me and put her head on my chest. I held her close to me and kissed the top of her head.
"Good night Mrs. Mendes. I love you." I said.
"Good night Mr. Mendes. I love you too." She said. I smiled and my wife and I fell asleep together. I love my wife and my kids so much, and I'm so glad that Rose apologized.
