August 2020 - Toronto, Canada

I've been dating the singer and songwriter Shawn Mendes for about eight months now. We went public with our relationship three months ago. Since then, I've been getting a lot of hate from some of Shawn's fans. I'm with Shawn at his place in Toronto for the summer but lately I've been feeling a bit homesick. Shawn knows this, and he said that if I want to go home, he would understand, but I told him that I want to stay here with him.

Two days after Shawn and I started dating, which was back in December of 2019, Shawn and I, along with his security guard, Jake, went to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. When we were driving back to my house, we saw that my next door neighbor, Johnny, was outside. I pulled over and rolled down my window.

"Johnny!" I yelled. He looked at me, smiled as he came over. He leaned into the car and noticed Shawn. His eyes went wide.

"Shawn, man, I have to tell you -" Johnny started.

"Oh God. Please don't embarrass me." I said.

"Oh, I'm going to embarrass you. I've known you since you were in the womb, so you and I go way back. Anyways, Shawn, this girl has had a massive crush on you for the longest time." Johnny said.

"Hey, you should totally go away and go back in your house." I said.

"Hush, young one. Anyways, I've seen Y/n have crushes on guys before, and I've heard her talk about guys before, but absolutely nothing compares to the crush that she has on you Shawn." Johnny said.

"I don't like you." I teased. Johnny looked away from Shawn and at me instead.

"You love me and you know it." Johnny said.

"Fine, I guess I do. Anyways, this is my neighbor, Johnny. Johnny, this is my boyfriend Shawn Mendes, and his security guard Jake Stras." I said as I pointed at Jake. Johnny nodded.

"Nice to meet you guys. My brother's name is Jake. Y/n, you want to visit Jake soon?" Johnny asked. I knew what he meant. He was asking if I wanted to go with him to Jake's grave.

"When?" I asked.

"Today?" He asked. I shook my head.

"No, maybe another time. It's cold out and I've told Shawn about Jake, but I'm not ready to bring him to visit Jake. I'll see you later." I said. Johnny nodded.

"Okay." He said.

"I love you." I said.

"I love you too kiddo." He said. I then drove home, which was right next door. Shawn got out of the car and exchanged numbers with Johnny.

"What are you thinking about baby girl?" Shawn asked me as I snapped back to reality. I was sitting in between his legs, my back against his chest as he held me in his arms and we sat on his balcony.

"Just thinking about the first time that you met Johnny." I said. Shawn kissed the side of my head.

"Yeah, that was pretty funny, wasn't it?" Shawn asked. I nodded.

"Yeah. I miss him, and I miss Liz too." I said, mentioning another neighbor. Shawn kissed the side of my head as he got a text.

"I'll be right back babe." Shawn said. I nodded.

"Okay." I said. Shawn got up, went into his place, and I soon heard him come back out.

"Yo, what are you doing just sitting there?" A male voice asked. I turned around and my eyes widened. Johnny and Liz were here! I got up and hugged them.

"Oh my gosh! I was just thinking about you guys! What are you guys doing all the way up in Canada?" I asked.

"Well, your boyfriend messaged me and said that you were feeling homesick, so we drove about nine hours to get here. I know that it's summer, but I stopped by your house and grabbed this." Johnny said. He handed me a hoodie - the one that's from the soccer tournament in memory of his brother. Tears formed in my eyes and I hugged Johnny.

"Thank you." I said. He patted my back.

"You're welcome." He said. I noticed that he was wearing the same hoodie, and so was Liz. I put it on.

"Why don't you guys go lean against the railing so your backs are to me and I'll take a picture of you guys?" Shawn asked. I gave him a quick kiss.

"Okay. Thank you for this Shawn." I said. He smiled at me.

"You're welcome. Anything for you my love." He said. I smiled and Johnny, Liz, and I leaned against the railing. We moved the hoods a bit so when Shawn took the picture, you could see what it said on the back of the hoodie.

"In Loving Memory of (A/n: not going to put my friend's full name here, but the hoodie has his name, date of birth, and date of death)" The hoodie said.

"Okay, I took the picture." Shawn said. We all looked at it and loved it.

"Should one of us post it on Instagram?" Liz asked.

"Well I'm automatically out since I don't have an Instagram." Johnny said.

"I'll post it." I said.

"Okay." Everyone said. Shawn sent it to me, I saved it to my phone, and then posted it on Instagram and wrote the caption.

"Lately I've been feeling a bit homesick, so what did my amazing boyfriend do? Shawn messaged two of my neighbors and they drove almost NINE HOURS just to surprise me! Also, Johnny brought my Jake hoodie so of course, Liz, Johnny and I had to take a pic of us matching! Jake, we miss you every single day, and I know that if you were here, you would be embarrassing me in front of Shawn (just like your brother did), teasing me, and you'd put on some dubstep music that you would dance to. We love and miss you Jakeyboy! Photo cred to Shawn!" I captioned it.

"Sounds good to me." Johnny said.

"Yeah." Liz said.

"Perfect caption." Shawn said. I hit the post button. I felt warm so I took off my hoodie but kept it close to me.

"We should totally put some music on." Johnny said.

"Sure. Babe, should we use your playlists?" Shawn asked. I nodded.

"Yeah." I said. I hooked up my phone to my speaker and hit shuffle on one of my playlists. Shawn grabbed Johnny a beer and I cuddled up to Shawn when he sat down. We watched as Johnny danced around to She Will Be Loved by Maroon 5. My head was on Shawn's chest and his arms were wrapped around me as we smiled and laughed at Johnny being silly.

"Y/n." Liz said. I looked at her and smiled at the photo that she had just taken of Shawn and I.

"I love it! Could you send that to me please?" I asked. She nodded.

"Of course!" She said.

"Johnny, do you mind if I live stream you dancing?" Shawn asked. Johnny shrugged.

"That's fine!" Johnny yelled back. Shawn took out his phone and started a live stream.

"Hey guys, so Y/n has been feeling a bit homesick, so I invited two of her neighbors to come and visit. Liz and Johnny literally drove almost nine hours just to surprise her, and now Johnny is dancing and singing along to the music we have playing." Shawn said. He then flipped the camera around as Take A Bow by Rihanna started playing. I laughed as Johnny danced to it and sang alone.

"Johnny, why are we friends? You're such a goofball." I asked and said. Johnny stopped dancing and looked at me.

"We're friends because I've known you since you were in the womb. From the womb to the tomb Y/l/n, from the womb to the tomb. Now come dance with me or something." Johnny said. I laughed and shook my head.

"No, I think that you have this covered." I said. Johnny laughed and then looked at Liz.

"Liz, dance with me!" He said. Liz got up and went over to Johnny. Johnny put his arm around Liz's shoulders and Liz laughed as Johnny laughed.

"Oh my gosh. He's so silly." I said as Shawn continued to hold me in his arms.

"He really is. If you guys weren't neighbors, would you still be friends?" Shawn asked.

"I don't know how we would've met. He's six years older than me." I said. Shawn kissed the top of my head.

"I love you baby girl." Shawn said. The camera was still facing Johnny and Liz as another song started to play, but the fans would've been able to hear Shawn and I. I looked up at him and smiled.

"I love you too baby boy." I said. Shawn gave me another sweet kiss. When we looked at Johnny and Liz, they were walking over to us.

"Okay Shawn, I know that your fans are watching the live stream that you're doing, but I want to ask you some questions." Johnny said.

"Oh dear God." I said. Johnny laughed.

"Are you treating my extra little sister right?" Johnny asked.

"Extra? You don't have a little sister. You literally only have older siblings." I said. Johnny stuck his tongue out at me.

"Hush, young one. So, Shawn, are you treating my little sister right?" Johnny asked. Shawn nodded.

"Yup. Well, at least that's what she tells me, but I think that I do." Shawn said.

"You do! You treat me like I'm a princess or something!" I said.

"Wait, Shawn can I take your phone to show your fans how you and Y/n are right now?" Liz asked. Shawn nodded.

"Sure." He said as he handed Liz his phone. She aimed the camera at us and we smiled and waved as we continued to cuddle.

"I heard that you guys say I love you to each other. Didn't Y/n say it first?" Johnny asked as Liz continued to hold Shawn's phone.

"Yes, she did. I was really, really nervous to tell her that I love her, but then she met Justin Timberlake and John Mayer and JT encouraged her to tell me that she loves me. That night, she told me that I mean so much to her and how she feels about me and then she said that she loves me and that she's in love with me. I felt so beyond happy when she said that. I felt like I wanted to scream 'I love Y/n Y/l/n and she loves me!' from the rooftops but we hadn't gone public yet." Shawn said with a chuckle.

"I heard that you got a library card because of Y/n." Johnny said. Shawn nodded as he rubbed my arm.

"Yup. She had come here with like, five books -" Shawn started.

"Oh yeah that will take her about a week or two to get through." Johnny said. Shawn laughed.

"Exactly! Whenever she would wake up before me, which was quite often, she would, and still does, come out here and read her book. She went through the books pretty quickly, so I ended up going to the local library, which I had never been to before, and she got a bunch of books which made her happy. Honestly, as long as my girl is happy, I'm happy." Shawn said. I moved a little so my chin was on Shawn's chest and I was looking at him. He smiled at me as he stroked the back of my head.

"Oh my gosh you're the cutest. Do you realize how happy you make me? Do you realize that I don't need books to make me happy? All I need is you and I'm the happiest girl in the world." I said. Shawn's smile widened.

"I love you so much honey. I really do. You make me happier than I've ever been in my whole life." Shawn said. I smiled and gave him a quick kiss.

"I would give you a longer kiss, but then Johnny would never stop teasing me about it, plus I think the live stream is still going." I said.

"Yeah, it is." Liz said and we all laughed.

"Oh! Let's dance to this babe!" Shawn said as Speechless by Dan + Shay started playing. I nodded and we got up and started to slow dance to it.

Liz's point of view

"Um, so I know that I'm doing a live stream and that Shawn's fans can hear me, but Johnny, do you see the way that they are with each other?" I asked as I looked at Shawn and Y/n. Johnny moved so he was sitting next to me and nodded.

"Yeah. They look at each other like they're the only two people in the world. Do you remember when she had a crush on that boy, what was his name, David?" Johnny asked. I nodded.

"Yeah, but that was like, oh gosh, ten years ago? But yeah, she had a big crush on David. Did you know, that whenever her and I text, at least once or twice Shawn will be mentioned, but usually more?" I asked. Shawn twirled Y/n as she laughed.

"She's in love with him. She told me that just the other day, and that wasn't the first time that she's said that to me. Do you know what she asked me the other day?" Johnny asked as Shawn and Y/n began dancing to another song.

"What?" I asked.

"She was telling me about hers and Shawn's six month anniversary, and what they did, and stuff like that, and then she goes 'What do you think Jake would think of Shawn?'" Johnny told me.

"Really? What did you say?" I asked.

"I told her the truth. Yes, Jake would embarrass her in front of Shawn, and yes, he would tease her about how smitten she is with him, but Jake would also love the way that they are with each other. I told her 'If you were able to tell Jake everything that you're telling me, he would automatically love Shawn.'" Johnny said.

"What did she say to that?" I asked.

"Liz, she started to cry." Johnny said.

"Really? Why?" I asked.

"Yeah. She said 'You don't know how much that means to me.' and she said that they were happy tears that she was crying. Look at them, they're still dancing." Johnny said. A third song, Perfect by Ed Sheeran, had started to play, and Shawn and Y/n kept dancing to it.

"They're in love." I said.

"Yup, they really are." Johnny said.

Your point of view

"Thank you, by the way." I said as Shawn and I slow danced. He tilted his head a little.

"What are you thanking me for?" Shawn asked.

"For everything. For letting me stay here with you for the summer, for getting a library card just for me, for surprising me by having my neighbors come visit me, for loving me the way that you do. Just, thank you for everything." I said as the song came to an end and we stopped swaying. Shawn pulled me in for a hug. His arms wrapped around my waist and my arms wrapped around his shoulders.

"Come here. You're welcome for everything babe. You're my everything and I love you more than anything in this world. You deserve the world, and more. I love you." Shawn said.

"I love you too. Do you want to know something that Johnny told me the other day?" I asked as I pulled away from the hug a little bit. I placed my hands on Shawn's chest, and he kept his arms around my waist.

"What did he tell you the other day?" Shawn asked.

"I asked him what Jake would think of you, and he said to me 'If you were able to tell Jake everything that you're telling me, he would automatically love Shawn.'" I said. Shawn smiled at me as I saw tears form in his eyes.

"Really?" Shawn asked. I nodded.

"Yeah. Why do you look like you're going to cry?" I asked as I became worried.

"They're happy tears, I promise. I just, I know how much Jake means to you, so that means a lot to me." Shawn said as he wiped some tears away. I gave him a hug.

"Oh, my sweet love. I love you so much." I said.

"I love you so much too." Shawn said.

"Shawn, are you crying?" Liz asked. I held Shawn's hand as we walked back over to Liz and Johnny.

"They're happy tears I promise. So, Jake would love me?" Shawn asked Johnny. Johnny nodded.

"Absolutely. If he could be here to see how in love you guys are with each other... Y/n was like his little sister, so he would be happy to see her as happy as she is with you." Johnny said. Shawn then looked at me.

"What about your Uncle Scottie? What would he think of me?" Shawn asked.

"Oh my gosh, he would love you so much! I was his little niece, and him and I had a bond. If he could see the way that you treat me, and how happy you make me, he would be over the moon. He would love you Shawn." I said. Shawn pulled me in for another hug and I rubbed his back as I heard him sniffle. He pulled away and looked at me.

"How would your Uncle Scottie feel about the fact that we had our second date and first kiss at a bench that's dedicated to him?" Shawn asked. I smiled.

"He would be happy about that." I said.

"I'm sorry that I'm crying, it's just... I know how much Jake means to you, and I know how much your Uncle Scottie means to you, and to know how they would feel about me makes me really happy." Shawn said.

"It's okay baby. Do you want to cuddle?" I asked. He nodded.

"Yeah. Liz, is the live stream still going?" Shawn asked as he looked at Liz.

"Yeah." She said. Shawn held his hand out for his phone.

"Okay. I'm going to end the live stream so we can all just hang out and I can cuddle with my girl." Shawn said.

"Okay." We said. Shawn looked at his phone.

"Love you guys! Bye!" Shawn said before ending his live stream. We had a really nice time with Liz and Johnny, and although I was sad to see them leave, I was glad that they had surprised me, and I was glad that Shawn was so happy too.
