132. Family Drama At Temple

A/n: This one is for my fellow Jewish readers! I did add a bit of drama to it so it would be longer and better. Also, let's pretend that it's January of 2023. Anyways, please enjoy this imagine. Okay, without further ado, let's begin!

I was sitting on the couch watching my favorite tv show, Supernatural, with my fiancé, the singer and songwriter Shawn Mendes, when Shawn suddenly paused the show, and looked at me. He seemed a bit nervous.

"Um, there's something that I want to ask you, but for some reason I'm kind of nervous and I don't really know how to word it." Shawn said. I moved so I was straddling his lap and I held my face in his hands.

"It's okay my love. It's just me." I said. He rubbed my sides.

"Well, next year you're going to be my wife, and you're Jewish, and I guess that I want to learn more about the Jewish religion since my fiancée is Jewish." He said. I smiled at him and then kissed his cheek before looking at him again.

"Well, to be quite honest, I don't really know a lot. Do you want to talk to my rabbi? Or maybe you could come to a service on Shabbat?" I asked. He thought for a moment.

"What happens during the service on Shabbat?" He asked. I thought for a moment.

"I haven't been to a service in a while, so my Uncle Larry might be better to talk to about this, but a lot of prayers are said, and then there's a luncheon afterwards." I said. Shawn nodded.

"Okay. Would it be okay if I went to that with you even though I'm not Jewish?" Shawn asked nervously. I smiled and kissed his cheek.

"I think so. Let me just call Uncle Larry." I said as I got off Shawn's lap.

"Okay." Shawn said. I called my uncle.

"Hey Y/n. How are you?" He asked.

"I'm good, how are you?" I asked.

"I'm good. What's up?" He asked.

"So, Shawn would like to learn more about Judaism. He was wondering if, even though he's not Jewish, it would be okay for him to come to a Shabbat service. Do you think that that would be okay?" I asked.

"Yeah, definitely. I can drive you guys to temple and I'll show him how to put the tallit on properly, because he's going to have to wear one, and he'll have to wear a kippah too." Uncle Larry said. I smiled.

"Okay. Thank you so much for this Uncle Larry." I said.

"No problem." Uncle Larry said, and we hung up. I looked at Shawn and smiled.

"He's going to drive us to the temple and he'll show you how to put the tallit on properly and you'll have to wear a kippah too." I said. Shawn smiled and nodded before pulling me into his lap again.

"Okay. Thank you for letting me come baby." Shawn said.

"Of course my love." I said with a smile. I then put my lips on Shawn's. I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my tummy, and I felt sparks shoot through my body like fireworks. A few days later, Shawn and I were getting ready to go to temple.

"Hey babe, is this a good outfit for temple?" Shawn asked. I looked at him. He was holding up casual clothes. A long sleeve graphic shirt, and some regular, worn, jeans. My eyes went wide and I shook my head.

"No, let me find you something." I said as I went into our shared closet.

"Why wouldn't this be good for temple?" Shawn asked.

"We're supposed to be more dressed up for temple. Here you go honey, this should be good." I said as I handed him some black dress pants a long sleeve, white button up shirt, and a tie. He nodded.

"Okay. Thank you. What are you going to wear?" Shawn asked as he began to get changed into what I had given him.

"A nice shirt and some nice jeans. I would wear a dress but it's cold out and I don't have any that would keep me warm." I said as I put on some nice, dark jeans, and a nice, red long sleeved shirt (A/n: Outfit is in the picture above!).

"Okay baby." Shawn said. I went in the bathroom and put on some makeup, just some eyeliner, mascara, and some light eye shadow. I stepped out of the bathroom and went back into the closet to pick out some heels. Shawn was in our bedroom, sitting on the bed.

"Shawn?" I called out.

"Yes my love?" He asked.

"Will you come here please?" I asked. I heard his footsteps come closer as I looked at the heels that I have.

"What's up honey?" He asked.

"What pair of heels should I wear?" I asked as I continued to look at the heels.

"Um, what about these black ones? They go with your jeans." Shawn asked and said. I nodded.

"Okay, thank you." I said.

"You're welcome." He said. Shawn held my hand to keep my balance as I got the heels on. I then turned to him.

"How do I look?" I asked. Shawn smiled as he looked me up and down.

"Absolutely beautiful honey. I love you." He said. I gave him a quick kiss.

"I love you too." I said. We then put on some nice jackets and the doorbell rang. I opened it to see my Uncle Larry.

"Hey Y/n, hey Shawn. You guys look nice! Ready to go?" He asked. We nodded.

"Yeah. Thank you so much for taking us." I said as we headed out to his car.

"No problem." He said. Shawn and I got in the backseat together. Shawn was bouncing his leg a little bit as we held hands.

"Why do you seem nervous." I asked Shawn as I squeezed his hand.

"I don't know. I mean, next year we're going to be married and when we have kids, this is the religion that they're going to be. Do you think that we'll bring our kids to temple?" Shawn asked.

"I don't know. I think that they should go to Hebrew School, but if they don't want to go, or if they feel like it's too much, then I don't think that we should force them to go." I said. Shawn nodded.

"Yeah." He said. We soon arrived at the temple that my family has been going to for about fifty years. When we walked in, the service hadn't started yet. My Uncle Larry pointed at the tallits and kippahs.

"Shawn, you're supposed to wear these, and you have to put the tallit on a certain way. Watch how I put mine on." Uncle Larry said. Shawn and I watched as he put on the tallit. I smiled proudly as Shawn did the same, and then put on a kippah. He looked at my Uncle Larry and I.

"Did I do it right?" Shawn asked.

"You did it perfectly." I heard a male voice say. Shawn turned around and I took a few steps forward just as Rabbi J was coming around the corner.

"Hi Rabbi J." I said as he gave me a hug. He then shook my uncle's hand before turning to me.

"Hi. Is this your fiancé?" Rabbi J asked as he pointed at Shawn. I smiled and nodded.

"Yes it is. Rabbi J, this is Shawn Mendes, Shawn, this is Rabbi J." I said. They shook hands.

"Nice to meet you." Shawn said.

"Nice to meet you too. Was that your first time putting on a tallit?" Rabbi J asked. Shawn nodded.

"Yeah. I'm not Jewish, but I thought that it would be nice to come to a service and find out more about my fiancée's religion." Shawn said.

"Do you and Y/n plan on having kids someday?" Rabbi J asked. He's never been afraid to get straight to the point. Shawn nodded.

"Yes." He said. He looked almost a little afraid of Rabbi J.

"Did you know that if the mother is Jewish, the baby will be Jewish too?" Rabbi J asked. Shawn nodded.

"Yes. Y/n and I have talked about it, and we decided that we'll celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas." Shawn said. Rabbi J nodded, seeming to like that answer. He then looked around a bit and put his hand on Shawn's shoulder.

"I'm not going to sugar coat this: Arthur goes on for a long time when he says his prayers." Rabbi J said. I put my hand over my mouth and turned my face away a little bit to hide my laughter. Shawn nodded.

"Okay." He said.

"You okay over there Y/n?" Rabbi J asked. I looked at him and nodded.

"Yes." I said.

"What were trying to hide your laughter about?" Rabbi J asked. I looked around a little bit, making sure that Arthur wasn't around.

"What you said about Arthur." I said. He smiled and nodded as he patted my shoulder.

"You guys can take a seat if you want." Rabbi J said. We nodded and went into where the service would be.

"We should probably leave a seat open for Aunt Bev." Uncle Larry said. I nodded and we left a seat open but placed a prayer book there to keep the seat reserved. I turned towards Shawn and we were talking as we waited for the service to start.

"Remember, when you open your prayer book, it's right to left, not left to right." I said. Shawn nodded and we continued to talk as more people came into the temple. My back was to the door, and I saw Shawn look up at the door, and then he looked at me. (A/n: I decided to add a little bit of drama in here to make the story better and to make it longer.)

"Your dad is here." Shawn whispered. My eyes widened and I turned to look. Sure enough, my dad, who I haven't spoken to in four years was walking right towards us. He never comes to temple. On all of the days that he chose to come, why today? Did he know that Shawn and I would be here? The only person that knew that Shawn and I would be here was Uncle Larry, my dad's brother. Great. Uncle Larry told him, didn't he? I sighed and looked at Shawn again.

"Here we go." I said to him. He nodded and kissed the side of my head.

"Mind if I sit here?" My dad asked.

"Oh, I think that we're saving that seat for Aunt Bev." I said as I looked at the prayer book that was reserving her seat.

"She can sit somewhere else, she won't mind. Yeah, you can sit there Y/d/n." My uncle said. It's not like it's a secret that I don't talk to my father. The family knows, especially Uncle Larry. I crossed my leg over my knee as my dad sat next to me. The rabbi got up on the bimah and saw that my dad was there. Rabbi J is loud. He doesn't need a microphone. When he speaks, he practically yells. Him and my dad like to tease each other, which always embarrasses my family and I.

"Looks like the temple pagan is here, we can start now." Rabbi J said. I clenched my jaw, not liking this already.

"I brought you a ham and cheese sandwich." My dad joked with the rabbi since that sandwich wouldn't be kosher. I uncrossed my legs and gently tapped my foot against my dad's to get him to stop. He looked at me as I stared straight ahead.

"Sorry." He whispered. I nodded, but didn't say anything. The service seemed to go on for a while, which may have been because of my anxiety about my dad. But I had to push through for Shawn. Plus, I couldn't just leave in the middle of the service, especially since Uncle Larry is our ride, and he's going to want to stay for a while. Shawn leaned over at one point to whisper in my ear as someone read a Hebrew prayer.

"Where are we?" Shawn whispered as he pointed at the prayer book. I shrugged and leaned to whisper in his ear.

"I don't know. I don't know Hebrew. Ask Uncle Larry." I said. He nodded and after he asked Uncle Larry, he knew at least kind of where we were. After the service, Uncle Larry, my dad, and Shawn took off the tallit that they were wearing, and we went to the other part of the temple for the luncheon. Shawn and I got some food and sat down. Shawn sat on one side of me, Uncle Larry sat on the other, and my dad sat on the other side of Uncle Larry. Shawn leaned over and whispered in my ear.

"You okay honey?" He asked. I nodded.

"Yeah." I lied. He looked at me for a moment and I faked a smile at him. He then whispered in my ear again.

"We'll talk more about this later, okay?" He asked. I nodded.

"Okay." I said and then went back to eating. My rabbi stopped by our table and looked at Shawn.

"So, Shawn, what do you do for a living?" He asked.

"He's a singer." My dad said with a big smile on his face.

"Oh really? Ever won any awards Shawn?" Rabbi J asked.

"He's been nominated for Grammys before." My dad said. I stood up, walked over to my dad, and leaned down to whisper in his ear.

"He's asking Shawn these questions, not you. Your name isn't Shawn. Please let my fiancé answer the questions that he is being asked." I said. My dad nodded and I sat back down. Rabbi J talked to Shawn a bit more, and then went back to his table. Uncle Larry had gone back to get more food, so it was just Shawn, my dad, and I.

"You know Shawn, I don't know if Y/n's ever told you this or not, but the family has always told her that she needs to marry someone rich, so I'm glad that she's marrying you." My dad said. My eyes widened.

"Dad! Seriously? I don't care about Shawn's money, that's not why I'm marrying him. I'm marrying him because I love him for who he is. I feel bad any time that Shawn spends money on me, so I don't care about the money." I said. I didn't say it loudly, but I knew that my voice was laced with anger. Anger that I had been feeling for a long, long, time. My dad nodded.

"Okay. Sorry. I know that you wouldn't marry someone for their money, that's not you -" Dad started.

"Oh don't start saying what is and isn't me when you don't even know. The only reason why I'm not out the door right now is because Uncle Larry is our ride. How did you even know that we were going to be here?" I asked. My dad closed his eyes and sighed, obviously not liking my words. Shawn rubbed my back a bit to get me to calm down. My dad opened his eyes and looked at us.

"Your Uncle Larry told me that he was going to be bringing you guys to temple, and I wanted to see you and Shawn, so I decided to come." My dad said. I nodded as Uncle Larry sat back down.

"So how much longer until the wedding?" Uncle Larry asked. I was upset with him for telling my dad, but I didn't say anything.

"A little less than five hundred days." I said. Uncle Larry nodded.

"How are the wedding plans coming?" He asked. Shawn and I smiled at each other and then we looked at my uncle as my Aunt Bev sat on the other side of my dad and waved at Shawn.

"They're going great. I have spring break coming up soon, so my mom, Shawn's mum Karen, Shawn's sister Aaliyah, and my best friend and maid of honor, Grace, are going to help me shop for a wedding dress." I said.

"I don't know if it's rude to invite myself or not, but I would love to come watch you try on wedding dresses." Aunt Bev said. I paused for a moment, unsure of what to say.

"Well, I've heard that the bigger the group, the more opinions are going to be out there, which puts pressure on the bride to make a decision to pick a dress that she may not like as much as she should, or maybe there's a dress that she really loves, and one or two people in the group don't like it, so even though the bride loves it, she decides not to get it. Plus, I don't think that we would have room in the car for another person. Sorry." I said. Plus you're one of the people who believes that my father can do no wrong even though he's terrible.

"It's fine." She said, but I could tell that her feelings were hurt a little bit.

"So where are you guys getting married?" Uncle Larry asked. I was hesitant to answer this since my dad was right there. As long as no one asked when it was, my dad wouldn't know, so he wouldn't randomly show up, right?

"We just put a deposit down for the State Room in Boston. Both the ceremony and the reception will be there. There's a huge window that has a beautiful view of Boston there." I said.

"Have you guys set a date yet?" Aunt Bev asked. Oh gosh. There was no way that I could lie to my family.

"Yeah, May twenty fifth of next year." I said. Everyone nodded.

"So when will you guys be sending out the invitations?" My dad asked. He couldn't possible expect that he would get one... could he?

"We'll probably send them out two months or so before the wedding. Dad, could I talk to you in the hallway please?" I asked. He nodded and we went into the hallway.

"What's up?" He asked.

"Thomas is going to be walking me down the aisle and -" I started. My dad's eyes went wide.

"Wait, but I'm your father. I'm supposed to walk you down the aisle, not your brother. How is that supposed to make me look?" He asked. My jaw dropped.

"This is just another reason why I cut off communication with you. Because of how selfish you are, always thinking of yourself. This is mine and Shawn's wedding day, not yours. We haven't had a good, solid relationship with years. Did you really think that I would be asking you to walk me down the aisle?" I asked, my anger rising. We were in a place of worship, this was not the right place to be having this conversation.

"Honestly, yes, but I guess I was wrong. Will I at least be invited to the wedding?" My dad asked. I shook my head.

"No." I said. My dad's eyes widened again.

"What does your fiancé think of you not inviting your own father to your wedding?" My dad asked. I clenched my jaw before answering.

"Shawn has heard the stories about you, so he knows exactly what you were like as a father, which wasn't much. You act like you're some great dad when in all reality, neither of your kids are speaking to you. I have to step out to make a phone call, please tell Shawn that I'll be right back." I said. He nodded.

"Okay." He said with a sigh. I stepped outside and called my brother. I wanted to cry.

"Hey Y/n." Thomas said.

"Um, Shawn and I are at temple, and Dad is here -" I started.

"Are you serious?" Thomas asked.

"Yeah. Uncle Larry is our ride, but if I stay any longer, I'm going to flip on dad, and temple is not the right place for that. Can you come pick us up please?" I asked.

"Yup, I'm on my way." He said.

"Thank you." I said.

"No problem. I'll be there in a few minutes." Thomas said.

"Okay." I said, and we hung up. I wiped away the few tears that had fallen and went back inside. Shawn was looking around while sitting there, and when he spotted me, he smiled a little before frowning. He could tell that something was wrong.

"Everything okay?" He asked.

"Uncle Larry, thank you for bringing Shawn and I, but Thomas is on his way to pick us up." I said.

"Oh, you guys are leaving already?" Aunt Bev asked. I nodded at her and then looked at my dad as I spoke.

"Yeah. I just don't feel like a place of worship is a good place to have a confrontation, and with the way that things are going, and with the way that I'm feeling, if we stay, there's going to be a confrontation." I said. My dad sighed.

"Y/n, I'm sorry -" He started.

"You've said that you're sorry so many times that I'm so beyond sick of hearing it. I'm going to wait outside for my brother. Shawn do you want to wait outside with me or stay here?" I asked Shawn. He stood up and threw away his plate.

"I'll wait outside with you." He said. I waved at my uncle and aunt.

"Bye guys. Sorry about this." I said. They nodded and after putting away his kippah, Shawn and I went outside. I held back tears and my throat burned. Shawn wrapped his arm around my waist.

"You okay?" He asked. I shook my head as I bit my lower lip to hold back tears. "Do you want to talk in the car?" He asked. I nodded and leaned on him. He rubbed my back and we stood there in silence, waiting for Thomas to get there. His car soon pulled up, and I practically ran to the car. As soon as Shawn and I were in the car and the door was shut, I bursted into tears.

"What the hell happened?" Thomas asked as we pulled away. I put my seat belt on and explained everything.

"I just want to go home. I'm so sorry Shawn, I'm sorry that I ruined this -" I started.

"Hey, stop it honey, you didn't ruin anything. When we get home, I'll help you take off your makeup, we'll get changed, and then we'll talk, okay?" Shawn asked. I nodded.

"Okay." I said. As soon as we got home, Shawn and I did exactly that and he comforted me and got me to calm down. I love Shawn so much, and I'm so grateful for him.
