128. He Tells His Band He's Taking A Break

Shawn's point of view

About two months ago, I married my best friend and soulmate, Y/n Mendes. Y/n and I know that we want to be married for a year before we start trying to have kids. We also know that we want three kids. I talked to my wife, some family members, and my team, and I've decided that I'll be taking a break from music for about eight years. Now, I need to tell my band, and after that, I'll post something on Instagram and do a live stream to announce my hiatus from music.

"I'm nervous." I said to my wife as I gently pulled her close to me and then buried my face in her neck. She tangled her fingers in my hair with one hand, and used the other hand to rub my back soothingly.

"Why honey? It's just the band." Y/n asked and said. I nodded my head against her neck.

"Yeah. But like, I haven't seen them since the wedding, and I don't know how they're going to react to me taking a break from music." I said as I picked my head up and looked at my wife who's more beautiful than words will ever be able to express.

"Shawn baby, you're doing what you feel is best and that's all that matters. You need to follow what your heart is telling you. What's your heart telling you, my love?" She asked as she placed her hand over my heart. I held her hand there.

"My heart is telling me to take this break so I can spend time with you and when we have kids, I'll spend time with them too." I said. Y/n smiled and nodded.

"Okay, then follow that. If your band gets upset, well, I don't think they will. You should just explain it to them and they'll understand." She said. I nodded. The doorbell rang and I went and opened the door. My band was standing there, smiling at me. I smiled back.

"Hey guys, come on in." I said. Mike, Dave, Zubin, and Eddy came in and gave me bro hugs.

"Where's your wife?" Mike asked.

"In the kitchen!" Y/n yelled so Mike could hear her.

"She's just finishing up dinner for us. Should we head into the dining room?" I asked. They all kicked off their shoes and nodded. We sat down at the dining room table. I sat at the head of it, Mike and Zubin sat on one side, and Dave and Eddy sat on the other. Y/n soon brought dinner in.

"Here you guys go. I'll just let you guys be. I'll eat at the kitchen table." Y/n said. I gently grabbed her wrist. I didn't want to do this without her. She looked at me as I shook my head.

"No, how about you stay with us honey?" I asked, my eyes pleaded with her to stay. Please stay. I need you. Y/n nodded.

"Okay, I'll bring my dinner in here. Should I sit at the other end of the table?" Y/n asked. I shook my head.

"No, how about you sit next to me? Mike and Zubin, would you guys mind moving down one so my lovely wife can sit next to me please?" I asked. They nodded and moved down so the seat next to me was free for Y/n. She kissed my cheek.

"I'll be right back, I just have to grab my dinner." She said. I nodded.

"Okay honey." I said and she left the room. Dave gave me a funny look.

"Why haven't you taken a bite of your food yet?" Dave asked. I smiled a little.

"I'm waiting for my wife first, and then I'll eat." I said. I felt like it was a respectful thing to do to wait until she was here too before we all started eating. Y/n came back into the room with her plate and sat down. She looked at me.

"Why haven't you started eating yet honey?" She asked.

"Babe you know that I always wait for you before I start eating. I just feel like it's a respectful thing to do to wait until you're eating and then I'll eat too." I said. She smiled at me.

"You're the sweetest." She said. I chuckled and began to eat.

"Nope, that's you honey." I said.

"So how was the month long honeymoon?" Eddy asked. Y/n and I smiled at each other and then at the band.

"It was absolutely wonderful. We were in Hawaii for a week, and then we spent a week at a castle in Ireland, and then we spent a week in Lithuania, and then we spent a week in Australia, and then we came home." I said.

"We took so many pictures of everything, and each other." Y/n said before taking a bite of the delicious food that she had made.

"Yup. This is delicious babe." I said. Y/n smiled.

"Thank you." She said. The band then said that it was delicious and she thanked them too.

"So are you guys still on cloud nine ever since the wedding?" Zubin asked. Y/n and I smiled and nodded.

"Yes, definitely." I said.

"It feels like even though we're not on our honeymoon anymore, we're still in that honeymoon phase." Y/n said. I nodded.

"Yeah. Honestly guys, you obviously know that I'm in love with Y/n, but it feels like ever since we got married, I've fallen even more in love with her. I didn't even know that was possible!" I said. Y/n laughed, causing my heart to flutter.

"So, since you guys are married now, I'm sure that married life will be a great source of inspiration for your music, right Shawn?" Mike asked. Okay, it's now or never. I set my fork down and reached my hand out for Y/n's. We interlaced our fingers together, and as our skin touched, I felt electricity spark through me, yet I felt safe and warm at the same time. She squeezed my hand, reassuring me that she was right there, and she wasn't going anywhere.

"I actually want to talk to you guys about that." I said.

"What is it?" Zubin asked. I sighed.

"Um, for the past couple of weeks, I've been talking with Y/n, other family members, and people on my team. I've decided that I'm going to be taking a break from recording music and touring for about eight years." I said.

"WHAT?" Everyone but Y/n and I yelled. Everyone then began speaking at once.

"Why? Why are you taking a break?" Dave asked.

"Why are you doing this?" Zubin asked.

"How could you do this? We always tour together." Mike asked and said.

"What the hell dude?" Eddy asked. Y/n let go of my hand and put her hands up to stop everyone.

"Guys STOP! Everyone is talking at once right now and that's not going to help the situation. If you'll just let my husband explain why he's taking a break, that would be great." Y/n said. I felt some relief, knowing that my wife has my back.

"Okay, we're listening." Mike said with some attitude. Y/n gave him a look. She's protective of me, of course.

"The attitude isn't necessary. Just let Shawn explain please." Y/n said. She then looked at me and we held hands again.

"So, Y/n and I know that we want to be married for a year before we start trying to have kids. We also know that we want three kids. I don't want to be in the middle of tour, and get a phone call from Y/n saying that our child has just said their first word, and I'm not there to hear it. I want to savor married life with my newly wedded wife, and I want to watch our kids have their first milestones. I want to be there when they say their first word, and when they crawl for the first time, and when they take their first steps. I don't want to miss those things. Let me rephrase that: I can't miss those things. I need to be there for our kids. I promise you guys that when I get back to recording music, I'll call you guys. I'm still going to be writing, I just won't be recording or touring. Plus, it's not like just because I'm on a break from music, you guys can't come over. We can still hang out. Just please understand that I'm doing this for my family." I said. The band all looked at each other and nodded before looking at me.

"Okay. Sorry that we got so upset." Dave said.

"Yeah, sorry." Zubin said.

"Sorry." Mike said.

"I'm sorry too." Eddy said. I nodded.

"It's okay. Just hear me out next time before you guys get upset, okay?" I asked. They nodded.

"Okay." They said. The rest of the dinner went well. Soon, my band left, and Y/n came up to me and hugged me.

"You did great baby. I'm proud of you." She said. I smiled and put my lips on hers. I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my stomach, I felt sparks shoot through me like fireworks, and I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon. We pulled away and smiled at each other as I held her close to me.

"Thank you for always sticking by my side no matter what." I said. She put her hand to my cheek.

"I will always stand by your side. You're my husband, and I'm always going to be there for you and I'm always going to love and support you no matter what." She said. I smiled and kissed her again.

"I love you." I said when we pulled away.

"I love you too. Should we head to bed?" She asked. I nodded and that's exactly what we did. I love falling asleep holding my wife. I love her so much, and I'm so glad that she was right there when I told my band about the break.
