117. When You're Ready & Getting To Know Each Other

November 22, 2019

Shawn's point of view

On August sixteenth, 2019, I met Y/n Y/l/n and instantly fell in love with her. We had our first date that day, and we talked for two hours. The next day, we had our second date and shared our first three kisses, which gave me feelings that I had never felt before. Tour ends next month, and I want to fly to her house and ask her to be my girlfriend. When we met, we traded numbers, and we've been talking constantly ever since then, whether it's over text, email, call, or Facetime. I know that she likes me, and she knows that I like her, but does she realize just how much I like her? I got a text from her.

Y/n: Today is the fifty sixth anniversary of President Kennedy's death which means that I'm sad :(

Me: I'm sorry pretty girl. I'm about to do a live stream, maybe I can sing a song to you to cheer you up? Would you like that?

Y/n: Yes! Which song? How will I know that it's for me?

Me: Well, it's one of my own songs from my third album. It'll be the first song that I play during the live stream. Email me from your laptop so I know when you're watching please.

Y/n: Okay.

I set up my phone and got my guitar. I was at home, on a break from tour, sitting in my condo. I sat back down and soon got an email from Y/n saying that she was refreshing my Instagram repeatedly to see when my live stream started. I started it.

"Hi guys." I said. I had my laptop open, so I leaned over and emailed Y/n.

Me: Are you watching?

Y/n: Yes! You look so cute omg.

I laughed at what she had said in her quick email back to me. I then looked at my phone.

"Sorry that I just randomly laughed. Someone sent a cute and funny email to me. Okay, I'm going to play a song. Ready?" I asked.

@randomusername: Yes!!!

I began to sing my own song, When You're Ready. I hope that Y/n knows that whenever she's ready, I'll be right here, waiting for her.

"And if I have to, I'll wait forever / Say the word and I'll change my plans / Yeah, you know that we fit together / I know your heart like the back of my hand" I sang. I finished the song and then put the guitar aside.

@randomusername: Why did it seem like you were singing that to someone?

"Why did it seem like I was singing that to someone? Maybe I was, maybe I wasn't. But, if I was singing it to someone, I hope that they know that I mean it with everything in me and that I'm right here, I'm one text or phone call or email or Facetime away. If I was singing that to someone, then I hope that they know that they just have to say the word and I'll be there. I'll get the next flight out if they wanted me to." I said. I knew that fans would realize that I really was singing it to someone, but I didn't care. An email from Y/n popped up on my laptop.

Y/n: Shawn, I'm guessing that you meant that for me... did you?

"Yes. To the person that just sent me that email, yes." I said as I looked at my phone. Another email popped up from Y/n after a few minutes.

Y/n: Shawn... I don't know what to say. That was beautiful and so beyond sweet. How long are you on break from tour? I want to see you, but I don't want to take you away from your family.

Me: I go back on tour on November twenty eighth. You wouldn't be taking me away from anything or anyone. I want to get to know you even more. I miss you.

Y/n:  I miss you too. I would love to see you, but I have school and work so we won't be able to spend a lot of time together while you're here.

Me: Maybe, if it's okay with you, I can drive you to school and work and I can pick you up. I don't care how much time I get with you, I just need to see your beautiful face in person. I know that we probably won't be able to go out and do much in public, but I just want to see you.

She had been responding quickly, but then that stopped. After a minute or so, I was just strumming the guitar while staring at my laptop, as if that would help Y/n answer quicker. I then looked at my phone.

"It's funny, because the person that I'm emailing is actually watching this." I said. I then got an email back from Y/n and smiled when I read it.

Y/n: My mom says that she doesn't think that you can stay at our house because there's nowhere for you to sleep. She doesn't want us sleeping in the same bed, which I kind of agree with unless we were dating. But she said that she doesn't mind you coming down and visiting me whenever you want and if you really want to drive me to and from school and work, she trusts you to do that. My brother could pick you up from the airport depending on when you come in.

Me: How soon can I fly in?

Y/n: As soon as you want to.

Me: I'll buy plane tickets right now.

Y/n: I just squealed so loud that you probably heard it all the way in Canada!!!

Me: Lol. I'll buy the plane tickets now and then I'll let you know when I'll be landing.

Y/n: Okay!

"Okay guys, I have some stuff to do, so I have to go. I love you guys, bye!" I said and then ended the live stream. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face. I was going to see Y/n! I called my parents and told them that I would be in Massachusetts until the twenty seventh and they said okay. I then found a hotel close to Y/n and booked some nights there. I called Y/n as I packed.

"Hey!" She said.

"Hi!" I said. I told her where I was staying, how long I was staying for, and when I would be landing. She told her brother.

"Okay, Thomas will be there. I'll send you a picture of him so you know what he looks like. I'm so excited to see you!" She said.

"I'm excited to see you too. I'm just packing right now." I said.

"Where should we hang out while you're in town? At my house?" She asked.

"We could hang out there or at my hotel room. It's up to you." I said.

"Okay. Thomas said that he'll take you straight to the hotel and then I'll see you tomorrow." She said.

"Okay." I said.

"I'll let you finish packing. I'll see you tomorrow!" She said. I smiled.

"I'll see you tomorrow! Bye!" I said, and we hung up. Y/n sent me a picture of her brother and I sent her back a text saying that I couldn't wipe the smile off of my face. She said that she couldn't either.

I soon left for the airport, one of my friends drove me. When I landed, I kept my sunglasses on so no one would know that it was me. I spotted her brother and I was glad that he didn't yell out my name.

"Hey Thomas. Thank you so much for picking me up." I said as I shook his hand.

"No problem. You make my sister very happy so of course I agreed to this. I think we can get your luggage over there." He said as he pointed somewhere. I nodded.

"Okay." I said and we went and got my bags. We then began to head out to the parking lot.

"You can put your luggage in my trunk. Y/n said that there's something for you in my back seat." Thomas said. I nodded.

"Okay, cool. That was sweet of her. I already texted her and told her that I landed and she texted me back saying that she's excited." I said.

"Yeah, she really is." Thomas said. We got to his car and I put my luggage in his trunk.

"So she has something in the backseat for me?" I asked. Thomas nodded.

"Yeah." He said. I opened up the door to the back seat and looked in. My jaw dropped at what was there.

"Are you going to come in here and sit with me or are you just going to stand there with your jaw on the ground?" Y/n asked with a smirk. I got in the car and shut the door.

"Hi, oh my gosh. I thought that I wasn't going to see you until tomorrow." I said as I gave her a hug.

"I couldn't wait to see you. Thomas and my mom said that if it's okay with you, it's fine with them if I stay with you at the hotel for a little bit." She said.

"Really?" I asked as we all got buckled in and Thomas began driving.

"Yup. Also, my said that because of everything that I've said about you, she trusts you enough to drive her car." Y/n said. I looked at her.

"What have you said about me?" I asked. She had been looking at me, but when her face turned red, she looked away, causing me to chuckle.

"I've said that you're very trustworthy and things like that." She said.

"She also says that you're very good looking." Thomas said.

"Shut up!" Y/n said. I laughed.

"I don't want to take your mom's car." I said as I reached out for Y/n's hand. She interlaced our fingers together, and as soon as our skin touched, I felt electricity spark through me yet I felt safe and warm at the same time.

"She said that it's fine. It's the weekend so she has nowhere to go." Y/n said. I sighed.

"Okay. I just feel bad taking your mom's car." I said. Y/n looked at me. I wanted so badly to kiss her, but not now, not in front of her brother.

"She said it's fine. Don't worry about it." Y/n said. I nodded. Her and I talked the whole way to the hotel. We soon got to the hotel and got out of the car.

"Hey Shawn, I'm Y/m/n." A woman said. I shook her hand.

"Hi, nice to meet you." I said.

"Nice to meet you too. You've made my daughter very happy. This is the key to my car, adjust anything if you have to." She said as she began to hand me the key.

"I can't take it. I would feel bad taking your car." I said.

"Why? I don't need it and you're going to need it to drive Y/n to and from school." Y/m/n said. I shook my head.

"No, I would feel bad." I said. Y/n's mom gently grabbed my hand, put the key in my hand, and looked at me with a smile.

"Shawn, take my damn car. I trust you with it." She said. I smiled and nodded.

"Okay, thank you so much. When should I have Y/n back by?" I asked. Her mom shrugged.

"It's a Friday so she can stay as late as she wants but maybe not the whole night. She has her house key." Y/m/n said. I nodded.

"Okay, thank you so much." I said. She nodded.

"No problem, and thank you for making my daughter so happy." She said. I smiled, got my luggage from Thomas's trunk, and Y/n and I went inside. I went up to the front desk.

"Hi, checking in for Ryan Mendes." I said. They did something on their computer and gave me a hotel key.

"You're all set." They said and then they told me where my room was.

"Thank you." I said. Y/n and I then began to walk to my hotel room.

"Ryan?" She asked. I laughed.

"Well I can't check in under my real name, now can I?" I asked. She laughed, causing my heart to flutter.

"Nope, I guess not." She said. We reached my room and went inside. I set my luggage down on the bed and turned to Y/n. We smiled at each other.

"Come here." I said as I pulled her in for a hug. She wrapped her arms around my shoulders and I wrapped my arms around her waist.

"I've missed you so much." She said. I smiled.

"I've missed you so much too. Come here, let's sit on the couch." I said. She nodded.

"Okay." She said. There were a few pillows on the couch so I tossed them on the bed and then her and I sat down and smiled at each other. I looked at her lips and then I looked into her beautiful y/e/c eyes again.

"How many times have we kissed since we met?" I asked. Her smile widened.

"I think it's three." She said.

"Want to make it more than that?" I asked. She nodded.

"Yes!" She said. I smiled and scooted closer to her. I put my thumb on her lips.

"I've missed these lips." I said. She smiled.

"Shawn?" She asked. I looked up at her, my thumb still on her lips.

"Yes?" I asked.

"Kiss me." She said. I didn't have to be told twice. I moved my thumb and put my lips on hers. My hands went to her sides as she put her hands on my cheeks. I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my stomach, and I felt sparks shoot through me like fireworks. This was definitely our longest kiss yet. We pulled away, gasping for air as we smiled at each other. I brushed some hair out of her face and tucked it behind her ears.

"Magical." I said. She nodded.

"Yup. What should we do?" I asked. I looked at the bed and then at her.

"Are you comfortable with just laying on the bed and talking? I know that you're waiting for marriage to have sex, so we won't do that." I asked and said.

"Yeah that's fine to just lay there and talk. You saw the television, right?" She asked with a smile. I looked up and saw it.

"Now I do." I said.

"How did you not notice the big tv in the room?" She asked with a laugh. I kissed her cheek a few times.

"I was too focused on this really pretty girl that I just got to kiss for the first time in three months." I said before kissing her cheek again. She laughed.

"Come on, let's lay on the bed." She said as we got up. I nodded and we took my luggage and the pillows off the bed.

"Oh wait, do you want dinner?" I asked. She shrugged.

"Sure, but I don't know what they have." She said.

"Should we go down there and eat?" I asked. She thought for a moment.

"What if we get caught?" She asked as she came over to me and wrapped her arms around my shoulders again. I wrapped my arms around her waist. I thought for a moment.

"Well, I can say that I'm just hanging out with a friend." I said. I didn't want to ask her to be my girlfriend - not yet. I would ask her to be my girlfriend once tour was over. She nodded.

"Okay." She said. I gave her a quick kiss and then we headed to the restaurant part of the hotel. She got a grilled cheese, and I got a burger. She had finished her grilled cheese, but I was still working on the big burger. I looked at her and finished my bite.

"You're so beautiful." I said. She blushed.

"Thank you. You're so handsome." She said. I blushed.

"Thank you." I said. After we ate, we went back to my hotel room and laid on the bed. She put her chin on my chest, wrapped an arm around my torso, and I rubbed her back as we talked about anything and everything. It was like we never ran out of things to talk about. I kept kissing her, and of course she would kiss back. I closed my eyes for a moment as I continued to rub her back. All of a sudden, I felt her sit up. I opened my eyes and she was staring straight ahead. I sat up with her.

"Shawn?" She asked as she looked at me.

"Yes Y/n?" I asked.

"What are we?" She asked, confusion on her beautiful face. I thought for a moment. Should I ask her to be my girlfriend now? No, I'm about to leave in a few days.

"We're friends." I said. I could practically see her heart break but she kept her composure and nodded.

"Oh. Um, I should probably go back home." She said as she began to get off the bed. I gently grabbed her wrist.

"Wait, are you upset?" I asked. She looked at me. My heart broke when I saw the hurt in her eyes. I had never meant to hurt her.

"Shawn, how can you say that we're just friends when we've been laying her and spending time together as if we're boyfriend and girlfriend? How can you say that we're just friends when we've been cuddling and kissing?" She asked. She was halfway off the bed, so I moved closer to her. I put my hand to her cheek but she took her own hand and moved it away. I felt so bad.

"Y/n I promise you that I'm going to ask you to be my girlfriend, I just want to ask you when I'm able to spend more time with you." I said.

"When is that?" She asked.

"Once the tour is over." I said.

"But that's not until next month." She said. I nodded.

"I know, I know, and I promise you that I'll come see you and that's when I'll ask you, okay? Just please stay." I asked and said. She chewed her bottom lip as she thought for a moment. I kissed her cheek gently. "Please." I said. She finally looked at me and nodded.

"Okay. I'm sorry, I just felt confused and I guess I felt a little hurt." She said as we both moved over so we were laying on the bed again. I nodded and rubbed her back.

"It's okay. I'm sorry that you felt hurt." I said.

"It's okay." She said.

"Can I have a kiss please?" I asked. She smiled and nodded. We then kissed. After a little bit, she yawned and then looked at the time.

"Shawn, would you mind driving me back to my place? It's past two in the morning." She asked and said.

"That's fine. What's your address?" I asked. She told me. I grabbed her mom's car key and then we got in the car. I had to adjust the seat and the mirrors, but I figured it out. We talked as we drove to her house. She pointed out which one it was and then I parked in front of it.

"I would invite you in but I'm very tired." She said and I chuckled.

"That's okay." I said.

"Do you want to come over tomorrow?" She asked. I smiled and nodded as I brought her hand to my lips and kissed it.

"Yeah. That sounds nice." I said.

"Yeah, maybe we can go for a walk around the block or maybe just up and down the street." She said. I kissed her hand again.

"Sounds good to me." I said.

"Can I give you a kiss?" She asked.

"Of course you can." I said. Soon, her lips were on mine, and our lips moved in sync with each other. She pulled away after a little bit.

"I'm tired." She said. I turned off the car.

"Why don't I walk you to the door?" I asked as I was already unbuckling.

"You don't have to." She said.

"It's fine, I want to do it." I said. We got out of the car and I walked her to the door.

"Thank you for flying in to see me." She said. I smiled.

"Of course. I'll see you tomorrow?" I asked. She nodded.

"Yeah." She said as her eyes drooped. I gave her a quick kiss and then watched her walk inside. I went back to the car and waited until the outdoor light was off before I began to drive away. We spent the next few days together, and on Monday I drove her to and from school. Her brother had to drive me to the airport that day.

"I wish I didn't have to leave." I said to Y/n in the car on the way there. She nodded.

"I know, I wish you didn't have to leave either. But you said we'll see each other next month, right?" She asked. I nodded.

"Yeah." I said. When we got to the airport, she asked her brother for a moment alone with me. She put her hand to my cheek and smiled at me.

"I never knew that I could get so attached to someone so quickly before I met you." She said. I smiled and nodded. I kissed her cheek and then I kissed her on the lips. I then looked at her for a moment.

"Next month, what's your answer going to be?" I asked.

"Answer to what?" She asked.

"Well when I ask you to be my girlfriend next month, what are you going to say?" I asked. She smiled at me and gave me another kiss.

"I think you know my answer and I think you know how I feel about you." She said.

"But I want to hear you say it. I think I know your answer but I'm not a hundred percent sure." I said.

"Is the sky blue?" She asked. I nodded.

"Yes." I said. She smiled.

"There, now you said my answer." She said. I smiled and gave her a kiss.

"I'll see you next month." I said before giving her another kiss.

"Okay. You like to kiss me, don't you?" She asked. I chuckled and kissed her again.

"Yup. Will I get more kisses after I hear you say your answer next month?" I asked. She nodded.

"Yup." She said. I smiled and kissed her again.

"Can't wait to hear you say it and I can't wait to kiss you more. One more and I'll be all set." I said, knowing that after this one kiss I would be dying for more. Her kisses were addicting, they were like a drug and I couldn't get enough of them. She giggled and we kissed again.

"There, you had the kiss, now go before you miss your plane!" She said with a laugh. I laughed and then got out of the car. Her brother walked me inside. I looked at him.

"If I tell you something, will you keep it a secret between us?" I asked. Thomas nodded.

"Yeah." He said.

"Don't tell Y/n this but... there were so many times while I was here, especially just now, that I wanted to say I love you, but her and I aren't even dating yet so I don't want to rush anything." I said. He smiled.

"I won't tell her. She's never come out and told me or our mom that she loves you, but the way she talks about you sure makes it sound like she loves you." Thomas said. I smiled.

"Well thanks for everything." I said.

"No problem." He said and then we said goodbye to each other. The next month I flew to Massachusetts again and asked Y/n to be my girlfriend. Her answer? Yes.
