11. Ruined?

I've been married to the singer and songwriter, Shawn Mendes, for almost eight years now. Together, we have three beautiful children. Our oldest, Rose Lucille Mendes, is seven. Our middle child, is Jacob Alexander Scott Mendes, also known as Jake, and he's five years old, and our youngest is Sarah Grace Mendes, who's three years old.

"Mommy, I'm tired." Rose said to me. Shawn's out at rehearsals since he's going to go back on tour soon, so I was at home alone with the kids.

"Okay sweetie, why don't you go up to your room and take a nap?" I asked. She nodded.

"Okay. I love you Mommy." She said. I smiled at her and kissed the top of her head.

"I love you too." I said. She then went upstairs and I tended to my other kids needs. Jake came up to me and lifted his arms up.

"Mommy uppie." He said.

"What's the magic word?" I asked.

"Please. Can I have an uppie please?" Jake asked. I nodded and picked him up.

"How's my little guy doing?" I asked.

"I'm not little Momma." He said. I sat down on the couch and had him sit on my lap.

"Well Jakey, no matter how old you are, you're always going to be my little boy. Daddy and I love you a lot. Did you know that?" I asked before kissing the side of his head. He nodded his head.

"Yes Momma. I love you a lot too. Can I take a nap please?" He asked. I nodded and then looked at Sarah.

"Sarah honey, it's nap time." I said.

"Okay Mommy. When will Daddy be home?" She asked as I picked her up and carried her upstairs as I held Jake's hand.

"I don't know sweet pea, but he should be home within a couple of hours." I said as I walked into her room.

"Okay." She said. I laid her down and tucked her in and then tucked Jake into his own bed. I checked Rose's room, but she wasn't there. Huh? I went into my room and saw that mine and Shawn's closet doors were open. I walked over and my jaw dropped as my eyes widened.

"Rose Lucille Mendes, what are you doing?" I asked. She stopped what she was doing and looked at me.

"I wanted to change what this looks like." She said. I stepped closer to her and tears filled my eyes. She had somehow gotten a hold on some scissors, and used them on my beautiful wedding dress.

"Is this dress yours?" I asked as I tried to hold back tears. She shook her head.

"No." She said.

"Then you shouldn't be trying to change it. This dress is very important to me and now you've cut up some of it. Where did you get the scissors?" I asked as I took them away and looked at the bottom of my wedding dress. My heart broke.

"I found them on the desk in Daddy's office." She said. I looked at mine and Shawn's oldest child.

"You're in time out at least until your father gets home. You can't do this Rose. This dress isn't yours to change, understand?" I asked. She nodded.

"Okay." She said.

"Let's go put the scissors away and then I want you to sit on the couch in the family room and think about what you've done." I said.

"Okay Mommy." She said. We put the scissors away - Rose said that the scissors were just laying out on Shawn's desk - and went downstairs.

"I want you to sit right here and think about what you've done. You may not understand this right now, but that dress is from one of the best days of my life, and now I'm going to have to pay someone to fix it. You shouldn't try to change something that isn't yours." I said. She nodded.

"Okay." She said. I could tell that she didn't understand why I was so upset. I went into the living room and sat down. I put my head in my hands and cried quietly. I soon heard the door open and I looked up to see Shawn walk in. He frowned when he saw that I was crying.

"What's wrong darling?" Shawn asked.

"DADDY!" Rose yelled. I began to walk over to Shawn and saw that Rose was running over to him.

"Rose, you're still in time out. Go sit back down on the couch please. Your father and I will talk to you in a little bit." I said. She nodded and went back to the couch.

"What happened?" He asked.

"Did you leave scissors out on your desk?" I asked. He thought for a moment before nodding.

"Yeah. I completely forgot to put them away. Why?" He asked, concern etched on his handsome face.

"Let me show you what she did with the scissors." I said and led him upstairs. We went into our closet and when I pointed at the bottom of the wedding dress, his eyes widened.

"Oh my gosh. Okay, it doesn't look too bad, we'll just get it fixed." Shawn said.

"But even after we get it fixed it won't be the same. She said that she wanted to change it so I told her that she can't change things that aren't hers. Shawn that's my wedding dress and she cut up part of the bottom of it." I said as tears fell onto my cheeks. Shawn pulled me in for a hug.

"Shhh honey. I'm right here, you're okay, everything's okay. I know that it doesn't feel like everything's okay, but I promise you that we'll get this fixed. I'll talk to her. I'm sorry that I left the scissors out." Shawn said as he took a step back and began to wipe my tears away.

"It's okay." I said. Shawn kissed my forehead and we went back downstairs to Rose, who was still sitting on the couch.

"Hi Daddy." She said. Shawn squatted down in front of her.

"Hi Rose. Listen, you can't change what's not yours. That was Mommy's wedding dress, so it's very important to her, and it's very important to me too. I shouldn't have left the scissors out, but Rose, you shouldn't have taken them and touched something that's not yours. Now Mommy and I have to find someone to fix the dress. Do you see how upset this incident has made your mom?" Shawn asked. Rose looked at me as I wiped away tears.

"Yes. I'm sorry." She said.

"Thank you for apologizing." Shawn said. Soon, we got the dress fixed and everything was okay again. I'm so grateful for Shawn.
