103. Hiatus Beard

A/n: Okay so I saw this edited picture of Shawn on Instagram and it inspired me to write this. I know that it's long, and I'm sorry, but I really like how it turned out. Anyways, please enjoy this imagine. Okay, without further ado, let's begin!

My husband of two months is the singer and songwriter Shawn Mendes. Just yesterday, Shawn announced to his fans over an Instagram live stream, and in a post, that he would be taking a break from music for about six to eight years. This is so he can focus on married life and, when we have kids, he can focus on them too. Shawn and I were sitting at the table eating breakfast when an idea popped into my head.

"Oh my gosh I just got the most brilliant idea!" I said as I set my fork down. Shawn chuckled and looked at me with a smile.

"Yeah?" He asked as he set his fork down and looked at me. I nodded.

"Yup." I said.

"And what would that brilliant idea be?" He asked.

"Okay, so, now that you're taking a break from music and you don't need to be in music videos or anything, you should totally grow out your beard. Please? For me?" I asked. Shawn laughed.

"You want to see me grow out my beard?" He asked. I nodded.

"Yes. I've always wanted to see you with a beard but you always insisted on being fresh faced." I said. Shawn smiled at me.

"Okay, but, if I grow out my beard, and we go to have sex, and I bury my face in your neck like I typically do, my beard is going to be tickling your neck." He said.

"I don't care about that, I just really, really want to see you with a beard." I said. He chuckled.

"You really want this, don't you Mrs. Mendes?" He asked. I nodded.

"Yup. I do." I said.

"Okay, I'll grow out my beard - just for you darling." He said. I got out of my chair and ran over to him as I began kissing all over his face.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you." I said as I kissed his face. He laughed hysterically.

"You're welcome, now give me a big ole smooch on the lips." He said. I smiled and put my lips on his. I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my tummy, and I felt sparks shoot through me like fireworks. We pulled away and smiled at each other.

"I love you." I said. He hummed.

"I love you too babe. How about we finish eating and then we can go out and do something. Does that sound good?" He asked. I nodded as I sat back down.

"Yeah. What would we do?" I asked before taking a bite of the delicious pancakes that Shawn had made for me.

"We could go to the park nearby." He said.

"Honey, there are a few parks nearby." I said with a giggle. He chuckled and then smiled.

"You know, we haven't been back to your uncle's bench since we got engaged. Do you want to go there?" He asked. I smiled and nodded.

"Yeah. I would love that. I really want to tweet about you growing out your beard." I said. Shawn threw his head back with laughter.

"That's fine my love." He said. I smiled. Once we were done eating, as we were getting ready to head into the city, I pulled out my phone and went to twitter.

"SHAWN, MY AMAZING HUSBAND, HAS AGREED TO GROW OUT HIS BEARD AND I AM VERY EXCITED FOR THIS!!!" I tweeted. I showed it to Shawn and he chuckled as he got black basketball shorts and a white t-shirt on.

"You're so excited for this and it's so cute." He said. I laughed. I put on white shorts and a dark green shirt.

"I am so here for the Shawn Mendes beard era. It's going to be great." I said. Shawn laughed and pulled out his phone. I got white vans on and then my phone dinged. Shawn had tweeted.

"'I am so here for the Shawn Mendes beard era. It's going to be great.' - Y/n Mendes, my darling wife, who has convinced me to grow out my beard." Shawn tweeted. I laughed and favorited it. I gave him a kiss.

"Do you think that, since you're so magical, you could just snap your fingers and then your beard will appear?" I asked. He gave me a kiss and held me close to him.

"I don't think that can happen darling. So I'm magical?" He asked. I smiled at him.

"Of course you are! I mean think about it Shawn, I get such magical feelings when we kiss, and when we hold hands. You always give me such magical feelings honey. You've always been able to give me such magical feelings." I said.

"When did I first give you magical feelings?" He asked, his arms around my waist, my arms around his shoulders. I smiled.

"Our first date. You reached over the table and touched my hand and I remember it was like electricity shot through me, but I felt safe and warm at the same time. You always give me those feelings. And then when we kissed? Oh gosh that was the most magical feeling in the world. Actually, no, just being with you is the most magical thing in the world." I said. Shawn smiled at me and gave me a kiss.

"Well you give me magical feelings too honey. Come on, let's go to the bench." He said as he patted my butt. I giggled and interlaced my fingers with his.

"Did you just pat my butt?" I asked as we headed out to the car.

"Yes. I like your butt. Actually, I love your butt. It's my favorite butt in the whole world." Shawn said as he jogged ahead of me to open the car door for me. I got in the car and looked at him.

"Thank you hubby. Your butt is my favorite butt too." I said. Shawn smiled, gave me a kiss, and then shut my car door and ran around to his side and got in. He backed out of the driveway, and once he got on the road, he kept one hand on the steering wheel and his other hand held mine. He brought my hand to his lips and kissed it. My smile widened.

"Wifey?" He asked.

"Yes hubby?" I asked as I rubbed his hand with my thumb.

"What's your favorite thing about me physically?" He asked. I instantly knew the answer.

"Your eyes. I get lost in them constantly, but I don't want to find my way out of them." I said. Shawn looked over at me for a moment as he smiled and then looked back at the road.

"Can I tell you something?" He asked after a few moments. I nodded my head.

"Of course you can babe. You can tell me anything, you know that bubs." I said.

"Your eyes are my favorite thing about you physically." He said.

"Do you remember your first words to me?" I asked as I looked at him. He thought for a moment and then shook his head.

"No. To be honest, I just remember seeing the most gorgeous girl in the world and thinking 'I'm going to marry her.'" Shawn said. I blushed.

"Well, your first words to me, ever, were 'I'm sorry what? You have the most beautiful eyes I've ever seen.' and that was the first time - out of many - that you made me blush." I said. Shawn smiled and kissed my hand again.

"I love you Y/n Mendes." He said. My heart fluttered at my new name.

"I love you too Shawn Mendes." I said. He smiled. We talked a bit more and then went to the bench. When we got there, we sat down and took a selfie. We stayed there for a bit, reminisced, but we also talked about our future together. Now that Shawn was going to be taking a break from music for a while, we would be able to spend more time together, and, after being married for a year, we wanted to start to try and make a baby. Shawn rubbed my arm as I leaned on him. He kissed the top of my head before he spoke.

"Do you realize that we were sitting basically exactly like this when we had our second date?" Shawn asked. I smiled and nodded.

"Yeah. That was a wonderful day." I said.

"It was, wasn't it?" Shawn asked. I nodded and held him a little tighter.

"Yeah. I wish that someone else would show up to the park and take our picture." I said. Shawn chuckled, and because my head was on his chest, I felt the vibrations of it, which made me smile.

"Babe, we already took a selfie." He said.

"I know, but it would be nice to have another picture here." I said. Shawn kissed the top of my head and then let his lips stay there as he spoke.

"Yeah. What do you want to do after this?" He asked before placing another kiss on my head and then pulling his lips away from my head. I thought for a moment.

"We could go to the Museum of Fine Arts if you want?" I asked as I looked up at him. He nodded.

"Okay darling." He said. I smiled and then leaned on him again. A teenage girl and an older woman were walking through the park.

"Look Shawn, maybe they can take our picture." I said as I looked up at him. He looked at them and nodded at me.

"Okay baby girl. I love you." He said with a smile.

"I love you too." I said. As the two girls got closer, the teenage girl spotted us and her eyes widened. Is she a fan of Shawn's? That question was answered as she took out her phone and came up to us.

"Hi, um, could I get a picture with you guys please?" She asked. Shawn and I nodded and stood up.

"Sure." We said and took the picture.

"Thank you." The girl said.

"You're welcome. Actually, would you mind taking a picture of Y/n and I please?" Shawn asked as he pulled out his phone.

"Sure!" The girl said. Shawn opened up his phone to the camera app and then handed it to the girl. Him and I sat down and I leaned on him again, just like I had when we met almost five years before. She took a few pictures and then handed the phone back to Shawn.

"Great, thank you so much." Shawn said.

"No problem." She said. The older woman that was with her was looking at the plaque next to the bench - the plaque that says that it's in memory of my uncle.

"Oh, this bench is dedicated to someone. That's so sad. I wonder what happened to him." The woman said.

"Heart attack." I said. The words came out of my mouth before I had time to stop them. The older woman looked at me.

"What?" She asked.

"The man that the bench is dedicated to... he's my uncle. He had a heart attack and so my family has this bench for him so we can come and visit him. He would have loved this spot." I said as I looked out at the river and then back at the woman. Uncle Scottie really would have loved this spot.

"Oh. I'm so sorry for your loss." She said. I hadn't heard those words about my uncle in a while.

"Thank you." I said. The woman and the girl nodded and then walked away. I tried to calm my breathing down as Shawn rubbed my arm.

"What's going through your mind?" Shawn asked.

"Why did I say all of that? And then, then she said that she's sorry for my loss. I haven't heard those words about Uncle Scottie in a while." I said. Shawn kissed the side of my head.

"You're okay baby girl, you're okay." He said. I nodded and closed my eyes. I smiled.

"Remember when we came here with Josiah and Andrew and you proposed to me?" I asked. Shawn kissed my head again.

"How could I forget? Our kitchen wall is covered with pictures from that day." He said with a chuckle. I looked up at him.

"But you like having them there, right?" I asked. I had gotten them for him as his twenty fourth birthday. He nodded.

"Of course I do. I love having them there baby girl." He said. I smiled.

"Good. I love you." I said. His smile widened.

"I love you too." He said. I placed a gentle kiss on his jaw.

"Should we go to the MFA now?" I asked. Shawn nodded and we stood up.

"Yeah. Do you know how to get there from here?" He asked. I shook my head.

"No. But we can put it into our GPS, right?" I asked as Shawn wrapped his arm around my shoulders and pulled me close to him. I wrapped an arm around his waist.

"Yeah." He said. We stopped walking so he could look up how far away it was.

"Oh, and can you send me those pictures of us please?" I asked. He nodded as he looked at his phone.

"Of course baby. Oh, it's only a three minute drive from here." He said. I smiled and clapped my hands together, causing Shawn to laugh.

"Oh I'm so excited!" I said. He smiled and wrapped an arm around me again.

"Me too honey. And maybe we can go to the Lawn On D after that?" He asked.

"I would love that!" I said. Shawn chuckled and we soon got in the car and drove to the Museum of Fine Arts. We stepped outside of the MFA after spending some time in there and then asked someone to take our picture. We took a picture in the same exact spot that we had our picture taken four and a half years ago when we went to the MFA for our first date as boyfriend and girlfriend. Shawn and I looked at the picture when we got back to the car.

"I love it baby girl." Shawn said. I nodded and smiled.

"Me too. Would you mind if I post the original picture and this picture on Instagram?" I asked.

"No, that's fine honey." Shawn said. I smiled and went to Instagram, picked those two pictures and then wrote my caption.

"December 23, 2019 to July 28, 2024. The first picture was taken by Jake, Shawn's security guard, on mine and Shawn's first date as boyfriend and girlfriend. The second one was taken today, our first time back to the MFA since we became husband and wife. A lot has happened in the past four and a half years. Shawn and I have bought a house together, I got my associates degree and my bachelors degree (I'm going to start working on getting my masters degree in the fall!!!) and Shawn and I got married. I love life with my wonderful husband. Love you Shawny baby!" I captioned it. I read the caption to Shawn and he smiled.

"I love it." He said. We soon got to the Lawn On D, which is basically a park with a lot of circular swings that are white during the day, but glow in the dark (A/n: Guys, I'm not kidding, they glow in the dark. I'll put a picture or two of the Lawn On D at the end of this imagine. I've never gone there but I follow Lawn On D on Instagram and I want to go SO BAD!!!). We soon arrived at the Lawn On D.

"I love these swings so much." I said as Shawn and I shared one.

"I know you do honey." He said. We had someone take a picture of us while we were sitting still on the swing, and one of us swinging on it. I posted them to Instagram.

"My hubby and I are swinging into his music hiatus and beard era like..." I captioned it. Shawn laughed at the post.

"You're so silly babe. I love you." Shawn said. I smiled at him.

"I love you too. What else should we do today?" I asked. Shawn thought for a moment as he swung us slowly.

"I don't know. What do you want to do babe?" He asked.

"Um, well there's a rooftop bar in Boston called The Landing. Do you want to go there?" I asked. Shawn smiled at me, which gave me butterflies in my tummy.

"You had me at rooftop bar." Shawn said and we both got up. I decided to tease him a little bit as he immediately put his arm around my shoulder.

"I thought that I had you when I asked for a picture with you." I teased. Shawn stopped walking and tickled my sides a little bit, causing me to erupt into laughter. He then stopped tickling me.

"That's what you get for being a sassy smart-aleck." He said. I laughed and we walked to the car. When we got to the car, I pulled out my phone. It wasn't that long of a drive, but someone had taken a video of what had just happened - Shawn and I getting off the swing, me being a smart-aleck, and then Shawn tickling me - and posted it on Instagram.

"Looks like Shawn is enjoying his music hiatus so far! I wonder what Y/n said to get him to tickle her lol." The caption read. I liked the post and then commented on it.

"Love this so much! I told him that we should go to a rooftop bar, he said 'You had me at rooftop bar.' so I teased him and said 'I thought that I had you when I asked for a picture with you.' and so he tickled me and said 'That's what you get for being a sassy smart-aleck.' lol." I commented. Shawn and I have always been very open with his fans.

We soon arrived at the Landing and it was kind of packed, but we found a place to sit. Shawn got a beer, and I got a glass of wine. Shawn and I agreed that the next time we come here, we should bring some other people with us and share a fishbowl drink. I looked at Shawn as he took a sip of his Corona and set it down. He absentmindedly and instinctively put his arm around my shoulders as he looked around at our view. I smiled at him, took a sip of my wine, and then leaned on him.

"You okay Mrs. Mendes?" Shawn asked. I looked up at him and nodded as I smiled.

"Yeah, I just really love my husband." I said. Shawn smiled.

"Well your husband really loves his wife." He said. My smile widened.

"I've loved today babe." I said. He kissed my forehead.

"Me too." He said. We talked for a little bit and then took a selfie together. We soon went home.

"Today was really nice. Thank you for all of that babe." I said when we got home.

"It was really nice, and you're welcome. Do you mind if I post some pictures from today on Instagram?" He asked. I kissed his chin, and shook my head.

"Nope. Go ahead babe." I said. I took my shoes off and went upstairs to take off my makeup. My phone lit up, Shawn had posted the pictures. He posted the selfie that we had taken at my uncle's bench, our picture at the MFA, a picture from the Lawn On D, and our selfie from when we went to The Landing. I read the caption and smiled.

"Day one of my music hiatus was successful and absolutely wonderful! My lovely wife and I went to the bench that we had our second date at, had our first kiss at, and got engaged at, then recreated one of our first pictures as boyfriend and girlfriend together at the MFA, then went to the Lawn On D where some of you may have seen a video of me tickling my wife for being a smart-aleck, and then went to The Landing. I think I'm going to like this hiatus, after all, it does mean more time with my smoke show of a wife!" He captioned it. I giggled and finished taking off my makeup and then went downstairs. Shawn was sitting on the couch.

"Bubs?" I asked. He looked up at me and smiled.

"Hm?" He asked.

"Can we cuddle? I'm tired." I asked and said. Shawn nodded.

"Of course we can. Do you want to know what I realized while you were upstairs?" Shawn asked as he held me nice and close to him.

"No, what did you realize?" I asked.

"When my beard grows out, I can tickle you with it as much as I want." He said. I laughed.

"Yes, and I will welcome it because I'm going to love your beard. I feel like it's going to make you look more grown up." I said as I rested my head on his chest and closed my eyes.

"I'm almost twenty six!" He said with a chuckle. I laughed and nodded.

"Yes, but you don't look it. On your birthday, when I make a post, I think I'll write a nice caption and then say something like 'Twenty six has never looked so good.'" I said. Shawn kissed the top of my head.

"Well, on your birthday, which I know isn't for a while, but still, maybe I should caption it 'Twenty six has never looked so sexy.'" Shawn said. I blushed.

"No! Babe, I like it when you call me sexy, but I prefer it when you call me beautiful or something like that." I said. Shawn put his hand to my cheek and I looked up at him.

"How come you've never told me that?" He asked. I felt bad. I shrugged.

"I don't know. I mean, I do really like it when you call me sexy, no one had ever called me that before you, but I prefer being called beautiful or pretty or something like that. I'm sorry that I never told you that." I said. Shawn kissed my nose.

"It's okay baby girl. Want to watch something on tv or a movie and then we can head to bed?" Shawn asked. I nodded.

"Yeah." I said. He gave me a kiss and then I leaned on him as we watched Ellen DeGeneres's Netflix special, Relatable. After that, we went to bed.

August eighth, 2024

I woke up before Shawn did. I smiled at him, my handsome and amazing husband. Today he turns twenty six. It's crazy to think that we met when he was twenty one, and that soon it will be five years since we met. I laid in bed, but carefully moved a bit. Shawn's arms had been wrapped around me when I fell asleep, but now that he was asleep, his arm was laying on the bed. I picked up his hand gently and carefully and played with his wedding band. I then felt Shawn move so he was laying on his side as he wrapped his other arm around me.

"You like to play with my wedding band, don't you babe?" He asked, his morning voice evident. I smiled and nodded.

"Yeah. Sorry if I woke you up." I said. Shawn kissed my cheek.

"It's okay baby." He said.

"Happy birthday honey." I said. Shawn hummed and kissed my cheek again.

"Thank you baby girl." He said.

"You're welcome. How does it feel to be celebrating your birthday as a married man?" I asked as I turned so I was facing him. He smirked.

"Well as long as I'm married to you it feels pretty good." He said. I laughed and gave him a kiss.

"I have to go out and get something, but then I'll be back, okay?" I asked. Shawn frowned and pulled me closer to him.

"No, stay with me." He said. My heart broke a little and I felt bad.

"I'll be back honey, I just have to get you something for your birthday." I admitted.

"I just need you and I'm happy. I don't need you to get me anything, I just need you." He said.

"I know baby, but... please? I want to do this for you." I said. Shawn sighed and nodded.

"Okay. I love you." He said.

"I love you too honey." I said. I gave him a kiss, got up, got ready for the day, and then went to the store. I got two balloons, one of them in the shape of a two, the other in the shape of a six. I then got some more balloons, a cake, and candles in the shape of a two and a six, and then went home. I had called Shawn when I was on the way home and told him to stay upstairs until everything was ready. I brought the balloons inside, brought the cake inside, and grabbed my presents from where I had hidden them in the basement. I then went upstairs, and Shawn was on his phone.

"You're home." He said with a smile. I giggled and nodded.

"I am. Do you want to see why I had to go out?" I asked. He nodded and got out of bed. I couldn't help but notice his stubble. We went downstairs and I pointed at the family room. He gasped.

"Oh honey. I love it!" He said as he wrapped an arm around my waist when we both reached the bottom of the stairs. I smiled at him.

"Happy birthday my sweet man. Now go open your presents!" I said. He chuckled and then went over and sat down on the couch. He opened up his first present which was in a big box. He smiled.

"Is this a pull up bar?" He asked. I nodded.

"Yup. I figure that we can put it in one of the door frames, maybe to your office or something, and you can do pull ups on it whenever you want." I said. He gave me a kiss.

"Thank you babe, I love it." He said.

"You're welcome." I said. He opened up his next gift and started laughing.

"This is the best gift that I've ever gotten." Shawn said as he took out the boxers. I had ordered boxers with a picture of my face all over it and it said "I love you!" on them.

"You like them?" I asked as I laughed too. Shawn nodded.

"Yes, oh my gosh, I have tears in my eyes from laughing. Forget Calvin Klein, I'm going to wear boxers with my wife's face on them. I love this so much." He said. I laughed harder.

"Good, I'm glad." I said. He then pulled out the last gift and his eyes widened when he saw what it was.

"Oh my gosh. Wait, what? How?" He asked as he looked at the hardcover book. The front read "NEW YORK TIMES: BIRTHDAY EDITION, FRONT PAGES FROM YOUR DAY." at the top and at the bottom it said "SHAWN MENDES: AUGUST 8, 1998."

"Well, it has every New York Times front page from August eighth, starting the year that you were born until now, well, besides today. Do you like it?" I asked. Shawn looked at it and nodded.

"This is so cool babe. I love you and I love my presents." Shawn said before giving me a kiss.

"I love you too and I'm glad that you love your gifts." I said. Shawn and I had a wonderful time celebrating his birthday.

May 25, 2025

I woke up in the arms of my husband of now one year. I opened my eyes and looked at him. He was already smiling at me. His beard - and mustache - had come in nicely, and I loved it. Sometimes, to tickle me, Shawn would rub his beard on my neck, and it would always make me laugh like crazy.

"Good morning Mrs. Mendes. Happy anniversary." Shawn said.

"Good morning Mr. Mendes. Happy anniversary." I said. Shawn gave me a kiss, and I could feel his beard and mustache. I giggled into the kiss because of the feeling.

"What are you giggling about wifey?" Shawn asked as he pulled away from the kiss and smiled at me.

"Your mustache and beard were tickling me when we were kissing." I said. Shawn chuckled.

"You're the one that wanted me to grow my beard out." He pointed out. I nodded.

"Yes, and I do love your beard. Um, Shawn?" I asked as I suddenly became nervous. Shawn rubbed my side, sensing my nerves.

"Yes my love?" He asked.

"Are we going to try and make a baby today?" I asked. Shawn smiled and nodded before resting his forehead against mine.

"Yup, we are." He said. I smiled and we made love. One month later, we found out that we had become pregnant. Two months after that, we Facetimed Shawn's family to tell them the news that we were expecting a baby girl, and they were crying happy tears.

"Son, you might want to shave off the beard and mustache when the due date gets closer." Manny Mendes said to Shawn.

"What? Why?" Shawn asked, his head tilted and his brows furrowed.

"Well you don't want to give your daughter scratchy kisses, do you?" Manny asked.

"No. I would want to give her smooth kisses. Okay, I guess I'll shave it off. I don't think that my lovely wife is going to like me shaving off my beard, but I'll do it for our little girl." Shawn said. I put my hand on his back and he looked at me.

"I'm going to miss your beard, but your dad is right, smooth kisses are better. I remember every time that my dad had a beard - which was quite often - and he would go to give me a kiss, it would be scratchy and I didn't like it." I said. Shawn nodded.

"Okay." He said. When I was seven months pregnant, Shawn shaved off his beard. I took a picture of him, freshly shaven, and posted it on Instagram.

"Well, my dear friends, the beard era has come to an end, but we will never forget it. Shawn's dad, Manny, pointed out that our baby might not like the scratchiness of Shawn's beard, and since we're two months away from the due date, Shawn has shaved off his beard. Luckily we have lots of pictures of him with a beard. Rest in the sweetest, most handsome and good looking peace beard era, we'll miss you." I captioned it. Shawn laughed when he saw the post and then commented on it even though he was sitting right next to me.

"OMG babe, you're too cute." He wrote. Two months later, Rose Lucille Mendes was born, and considering the fact that she would give a gummy smile when Shawn gave her kisses, I think that she liked the fact that he had no beard. I love Shawn Rose, and I loved Shawn's beard so much.
