99. Amnesia pt. 2
"Who are you?" I asked the man that had just been holding my hand. He looked heartbroken and his eyes widened.
"Darling it's me. Shawn Mendes, I'm your fiancé." He said. I nodded hesitantly and then looked at the nurse.
"Is he really my fiancé?" I asked. She nodded.
"Yes he is. You're a very lucky girl to have him. You've been in a coma for the past three weeks and he has refused to leave your side." She said. I nodded.
"Why doesn't she remember me?" The man, Shawn, asked. He looked quite handsome.
"She could have amnesia. Let me go get the doctor." The nurse said before leaving the room. Shawn sat back down in the chair next to my bed.
"So... you and I are engaged?" I asked. He looked at me and nodded.
"Yup. I proposed to you a month ago. I'm really sorry, this is all my fault. If I hadn't scheduled you to go horseback riding this never would have happened. I didn't know that the horse was going to buck you off." Shawn said.
"It's okay. It's not your fault that the horse bucked me off. Was that my first time riding a horse?" I asked. He looked like he was trying not to cry as he shook his head.
"No. You rode horses for about ten years before you stopped." He said.
"Why did I stop?" I asked.
"You hurt your ankle - the injury had nothing to do with horseback riding - but you needed surgery and physical therapy for it, so you decided to stop riding." He said. I nodded and the doctor came in. He asked me some questions.
"What's your mother's name?" He asked. I thought for a moment.
"I don't know." I said.
"Do you remember your father's name?" He asked. I thought for a moment before shaking my head.
"No." I said. He pointed at Shawn.
"Do you remember how you met your fiancé?" He asked. I looked over at Shawn. His eyes looked hopeful but as I thought hard about it, I shook my head.
"No." I said. Shawn put his head in his hands for a moment before looking up and I felt bad that I couldn't remember.
"Do you remember your own name?" He asked. I thought for a moment and then shook my head.
"No." I said.
"Look at your hospital bracelet on your wrist." He said. I looked at it.
"I'm Y/n Y/l/n." I said. The doctor nodded and then looked at Shawn.
"She has what's called amnesia. It's memory loss." He said and Shawn nodded.
"Okay. What can I do to help bring her memory back?" Shawn asked.
"Talk to her about things that happened in her life, show her pictures, things like that." The doctor said. Shawn nodded, thanked him, and then left. I looked at Shawn.
"So what's my life story?" I asked. Shawn chuckled a little. I tilted my head to the side a little, confused as to why he was laughing.
"Sorry, I shouldn't laugh, but um, on our first date, I basically asked you that using almost exactly those words." He said. I nodded.
"Oh. Wait, so before you tell me my life story, how did we meet?" I asked. Shawn smiled at the memory.
"I had performed the night before, and you had actually seen me in concert -" He started.
"Concert? Are you a singer or something?" I asked. Shawn nodded.
"Yeah, I'm a singer." He said.
"Cool. Ever won any awards?" I asked. He nodded.
"Yup. I've been nominated for a couple of Grammy's too." He said. I nodded.
"That's pretty cool." I said. He nodded.
"Yeah. So I was in Boston and I went to a local Dunkin Donuts that was near my hotel. I had never been there before so I didn't know what to get. I saw a girl at the counter getting her drink, and when that girl, who turned out to be you, turned around, I fell in love right away. I knew that you were the one for me, the one that I wanted, and still want, to spend the rest of my life with, the moment that I laid eyes on you. We had our first date right then and there and we sat and talked for two hours. We had our second date the next day, and a few months later, I flew to your house and asked you to be my girlfriend, and you said yes." Shawn said. I nodded.
"So how did you propose to me?" I asked.
"I told you to get dressed up and that we would go to a local park and have my tour photographer, Josiah Van Dien take our pictures. I told you that we were just going to do a little photoshoot, but as Josiah was taking the pictures, I got down on one knee, and once you realized what I was doing, you said 'Oh my gosh.' and started crying happy tears. I made a speech about how much I love you and how much you mean to me and then asked you to marry me and your exact words were 'Yes! Yes, yes, a million times yes!' and we stood up and kissed." Shawn said. I nodded. A nurse then came in.
"So my shift is ending, but your new nurse is Jamie." She said. I nodded.
"Okay." I said. I then turned back to Shawn and asked him to tell me about my life since I didn't remember it.
"I promise you that I'll do that, but let me just call your parents and tell them what's going on." He said and I nodded.
"Okay." I said. He then called my mom and cried a little as he told her everything. He then hung up and turned back to me. He opened his mouth to speak when a male nurse walked in.
"Hi I'm Jamie and I'll be your new nurse. How are you feeling Miss Y/l/n?" He asked.
"Good physically but otherwise I'm confused. I don't remember anything." I said.
"That's normal if you have amnesia." He said and I nodded. He soon left and I turned to Shawn.
"He was kind of cute." I said. Shawn's eyes widened.
"I know that you don't remember, but I am your fiancé." Shawn said and I nodded.
"Sorry. You're extremely handsome by the way." I said and Shawn smiled.
"Who's better looking, me or Jamie?" He asked.
"You. Definitely you." I said, and I was serious, I meant it. Shawn smiled.
"You look so beautiful by the way." He said and I could feel myself blushing as I looked down.
"Thank you." I said.
"You're welcome. So, your life, okay where do I begin?" He asked. I shrugged.
"Who are my parents? Do I have any siblings? Where am I from?" I asked. He nodded and began to tell my about my life. I listened intently, wanting to know who the hell I was. He told me about memories that he had with me.
"Is any of this stirring anything for you? Any memories?" He asked. I shook my head and I could practically see his heart breaking.
"No. But I get the feeling that I like stories, and my life sounds like an interesting one." I said. Shawn chuckled a little and nodded.
"You absolutely love to read. You've been reading ever since you could figure out how to. When we first met, you had a book in your hands." Shawn said. I nodded.
"Do you remember what book it was?" I asked. Shawn nodded and told me.
"Do you remember that book?" He asked, his eyes looked hopeful. I thought for a moment before shaking my head.
"No." I said. He nodded sadly and then continued to tell me about my life. After a few more days at the hospital, I was free to go home with Shawn. We were soon on the highway and we drove in silence as he watched the road and I looked out the window.
"This is weird." Shawn said. I looked over at him.
"What's weird?" I asked.
"Usually when you and I are together, we always have something to talk about, but right now there's just silence. Y/n, you have to understand, you aren't just my fiancé, you're my best friend. You know me better than anyone else and I know you better than anyone else. We know each other's deepest, darkest secrets and we're loyal to each other. You and I don't keep secrets, so remember that please. If there's something that you're feeling, just let me know please, okay?" He asked. I nodded.
"Okay." I said and then went back to looking out the window.
"You've always loved to look out the window when you and I are driving in or out of the city." He said with a small chuckle.
"Boston just seems so pretty." I said with a smile and he nodded. There was another moment of silence before he began speaking again.
"Um, if you want, I can sleep on the couch and you can sleep in our bed." He said. I nodded.
"Yeah. I don't really feel comfortable sleeping in the same bed with a man that I don't really know." I said. Shawn then pulled over to the side of the road, put on his hazards, and I saw tears fall down onto his cheeks. My heart broke at the sight.
"But you do know me. We're engaged, we're best friends, we're each others worlds." He said. I nodded and felt tears well up in my eyes before they began to fall.
"I'm sorry Shawn, I'm so sorry. I just don't remember." I said. He turned to me.
"It's okay. Gosh, I really want to wipe your tears away right now but I don't know if you're comfortable with that." He said. I shrugged.
"You can wipe my tears away if you want." I said. He nodded and began to wipe my tears away.
"I hate seeing you cry. I know that you don't remember, but you're my darling girl. You're so beyond precious to me, and there are times when I've even kissed away your tears." He said. I nodded.
"I'm sorry that I don't remember." I said. He shook his head.
"It's okay. It's not your fault. Let's get back on the road." He said as he finished wiping away my tears. I nodded. We soon arrived at a beautiful house.
"Is this our house?" I asked. He nodded.
"Yup. We bought it together about a year and a half ago." He said. I nodded and we went inside. Shawn kicked his shoes off onto a mat and I did the same thing. I looked around.
"Um, where's the bathroom?" I asked. He looked like he was holding back tears.
"We have three bathrooms. I'll show you the one upstairs in our bedroom." He said and I followed him upstairs.
"Thank you." I said. He nodded.
"You're welcome. If you need anything, I'll just be right downstairs, okay Y/n?" He asked. I nodded.
"Okay." I said. I went in the bathroom, and once I was done in there, I went into mine and Shawn's bedroom. There were lots of photos on the wall, so I went and looked at them. They were all of just Shawn and I. I studied the one that was on the little table next to the bed and saw that it was a photo of him down on one knee, proposing to me.
I sat down on the bed as I picked up the photo and studied it, trying hard to remember that day, but I couldn't. I set the photo back down and sighed. I then realized that I didn't know which side of the bed I usually slept on. There was a knock on the door and I turned to see Shawn.
"Mind if I come in? I just need some pillows and blankets for the couch." He asked and said.
"Oh that's fine. Um, I have a question." I said as Shawn walked over to what appeared to be our walk in closet.
"Sure, what's up?" He asked.
"Um, which side of the bed do I usually sleep on?" I asked. He looked like he was holding back tears as he pointed at the other side of the bed.
"This side, the one closer to the closet and bathroom." He said. I nodded and yawned.
"Thank you." I said.
"You're welcome." He said.
"I'm just going to lay down for a little bit." I said. He nodded.
"Okay. I'll make dinner when you get up. Just come downstairs when you wake up, okay?" He said and asked. I nodded.
"Okay." I said. He gave me a little smile and then left the room. I went around to my side of the bed and got under the blankets. I looked at the nightstand on my side of the bed. There was a framed photo of me and a few other people. Shawn was in the picture too. I picked it up and went downstairs. Shawn saw me and gave me a confused look.
"I thought that you were going to take a nap?" He asked.
"I am, but, um, who are the people in this picture?" I asked as I showed him the picture. He smiled at the picture.
"Well, that's you obviously, and obviously that's me. That's your mom, that's your dad, and that's your brother." He said. He look at the photo for another moment before handing it back to me.
"What are their names?" I asked. His eyes went wide but he told me who they were, even telling me my mother's maiden name, but hearing it didn't spark anything.
"They want to visit you but I told them that maybe we should let you get adjusted to being back here before you have any visitors." Shawn said and I nodded.
"Okay. I'm going to go take that nap." I said and Shawn nodded. I went back upstairs and fell asleep. When I woke up, I went downstairs and Shawn made dinner.
"Do you want to sit on the counter while I make dinner?" He asked. I thought for a moment.
"Is that what we usually do?" I asked. He nodded.
"Yeah. You usually sit on the counter while I make breakfast or whatever it is that I'm making and we talk. We've always called them our counter talks." He said. I nodded. He looked at me for a moment. "Do you remember our counter talks?" He asked. I thought for a moment as he watched me. I shook my head.
"No. I'm sorry." I said. He shook his head.
"It's okay. Y/n, honey, you don't have to apologize for this." He said. I nodded and went to sit on the couch while he made dinner. After dinner, I felt full and tired. I yawned.
"I'm going to go to bed." I said. Shawn nodded.
"Okay. Good night. You don't have to say it back, but I love you honey, I really do." He said. I nodded and smiled a little.
"Good night Shawn." I said, and went upstairs. I got into bed but I didn't lay down right away. I didn't even turn off the lights. Whoever this Shawn guy is, apparently him and I are engaged, and he really, truly, seems to love me. I turned off the lights and laid down and closed my eyes. Soon, I was asleep.
I walked into a house and up the stairs. There was a man at the kitchen table.
"Where am I? Who are you?" I asked him as I looked around.
"You're at your grandparents house. I'm your Uncle Scottie. Y/n, I need you to wake up." He said.
"Shawn said that you died when I was little. He said that I was ten when you died." I said. He nodded.
"I did. I need you to wake up, because there's something that I need you to do." He said.
"What do I need to do?" I asked as I sat down at the table with him.
"Go straight down the hall. That's Shawn's office. Look at the pictures in there, it might help jog some memories." He said. I nodded.
"Okay. Shawn said that you and I were close. Will I see you again?" I asked. Uncle Scottie smiled at me and nodded.
"I'll be in your dreams again, I promise, and I'm always watching over you. Now, wake up." He said.
I opened my eyes and sat up. I needed to do what my uncle had told me to do. I looked at the time on my phone, it was a little after one in the morning. I got up and went straight down the hall and into Shawn's office. I found the light switch and squinted for a moment before my eyes adjusted to the brightness. I looked at Shawn's desk and sat down at the chair in front of it. I looked at the photos, and did a double take on one of them. I picked it up and studied it. Then, everything came back to me, and I remembered the moment that it was taken.
"Hi Shawn, um, I saw you in concert last night and you were amazing. Could I get a picture with you please?" I asked.
"I'm sorry what? You have the most beautiful eyes that I've ever seen." He asked and said. I blushed.
"I saw you in concert last night and you and the band were amazing. Could I get a picture with you please?" I asked. He nodded and we took the picture.
"Could you text that to me please?" He asked. My eyes widened as I looked at him.
"But then I would have your number." I pointed out. He nodded.
"Yes, but I trust that you won't give it out. What's your name?" He asked.
"Y/n Y/l/n." I said. He smiled.
"Beautiful name for a beautiful girl." He said and I thanked him. I texted it to him and he asked me what he should order, so I told him what I always get. He told me to stay where I was, and when he came back, he asked me out on a date, and I very happily said yes.
I took the picture and went downstairs. I remembered everything. Oh, my poor Shawny had to go through all of this. I saw Shawn sitting up on the couch, watching the television. He looked at me.
"Can't sleep?" He asked. I turned on the light - I was happy to remember where the light switch was. I sat down next to Shawn as I held the photo close to me.
"I remember." I said. His eyes widened and he turned to face me more.
"You remember? What do you remember?" He asked. I put my hand to his cheek and rubbed it gently with my thumb. He leaned into my touch, just like he always does.
"Everything. I remember everything Shawn." I said.
"I believe you, but can you prove it for me?" He asked.
"How do you want me to prove it?" I asked.
"Tell me something that you remember that I didn't tell you." He said. I thought for a moment.
"The second day that we knew each other, we went on our second date. I was really nervous to kiss you because I was afraid of getting my heart hurt again, but you reassured me and promised me that you would never hurt me. We kissed three times that day." I said. Shawn began to cry as he hugged me. I set the photo down and hugged him back as I began to cry.
"Oh my gosh this is amazing. I love you so much honey." He said. I pulled away from the hug a little so I could wipe his tears away.
"I love you so much too. Don't cry my love. Everything's okay again." I said. He nodded and smiled at me.
"They're happy tears, I promise. I was so scared that you were never going to remember me or anything or anyone again." He said. I hugged him again.
"It's okay honey. I'm right here and I remember. I'm really sorry that I put you through all of that." I said. Shawn pulled away from the hug and held my face in his big hands.
"Don't apologize. It's okay." He said. I nodded.
"No more horseback riding." I said. Shawn shook his head.
"Nope. No more." He said.
"I love you." I said and his smile widened.
"I love you too. Come here." He said before putting his lips on mine. I felt my heart race as if it were going to beat out of my chest, I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my tummy, and I felt sparks shoot through my body. Shawn and I kissed until we couldn't possibly kiss anymore. "God I've missed kissing you." Shawn said and I giggled as I nodded.
"I've missed kissing you too." I said. Shawn then got a confused look on his face.
"Wait, what brought all of the memories back?" He asked.
"Uncle Scottie visited me in my dreams." I said. Shawn's eyes widened.
"Really?" He asked. I nodded.
"Yeah. He told me to go straight down the hall because that's your office, and to look at the pictures in there. In the dream, I asked him if I would see him again, and he said that he would be in my dreams again and that he's always watching over me. So I woke up, and went into your office, and I did a double take on this picture." I said as I picked up the photo and showed it to Shawn. He smiled at the photo.
"Our first picture together." He said. I nodded.
"Yup. I looked at it and then everything came back to me." I said. Shawn put the photo down and pulled me onto his lap. As I hadn't been expecting this, I squealed, causing Shawn to laugh.
"I love doing unexpected things like that just to hear you squeal. It makes my heart flutter. You give me crazy feelings, my love." He said with a smile and I smiled back.
"Well you give me crazy feelings too." I said. His smile widened.
"I feel like I don't want to sleep. I feel like I just want to stay up and talk to you." He said. I rubbed his cheek with my thumb.
"I know, but we can do that in the morning. Come on, let's go to bed baby." I said. Shawn leaned forward and turned off the television. We left the picture where it was for now and I squealed again as Shawn picked me up and carried me upstairs. He laid me down before getting in on his side of the bed and pulling me close to him. He kissed my forehead and the spot that he kissed was left feeling tingly even after his lips were no longer there.
"Good night my darling. I love you." He said. I smiled.
"Good night Shawn. I love you too." I said as we cuddled up to each other. The next day we told our friends and family that my memory had come back, and Shawn did a livestream on Instagram, saying that my memory had come back. He said that he would resume touring soon. I'm so happy to have my memory back.
