67. Daddy's Favorite?

Rose Mendes's point of view

I'm the oldest child of the legendary Shawn Mendes and Y/n Mendes. I have two younger siblings: Jake, who's two years younger than me, and Sarah, who's two years younger than him. I'm a senior in high school and I've recently been accepted into my top schools, causing my parents and all of my family members to be very proud of me. My dad decided to take me out to lunch so we could spend some one on one time with each other.

"You know Rosie, I'm very proud of you. You're going to do great things. You already are." Daddy said as we ate and I smiled.

"Thanks Daddy, but I couldn't have done it without the support of my amazing parents." I said and Daddy smiled at me.

"Honey, I know that I've said this to you a million times, but no matter how old you are or anything, you're always going to be my little girl. You were my first born. I love you and your siblings equally, but you were the one that made me a father." He said. I smiled at him.

"Well we all love you Daddy. Honestly, I don't know of anyone that doesn't like you." I said. He laughed.

"Trust me, there are people out there that don't like me. I'm sad that you're going to a school far away, but I know that you're going to have a lot of fun. Just don't do anything that I wouldn't do." Daddy said with a laugh and I laughed too. We had a nice lunch and soon went home. I gave him a hug and went upstairs to my bedroom so I could read a book. Soon, there was a knock at my door.

"Come in!" I said, and my fourteen year old sister, Sarah, walked in and crossed her arms. Oh gosh.

"I hate you." She said.

"What? What did I ever do to you?" I asked as I set the book down next to me.

"Oh come on, like you don't know." She scoffed.

"No, I don't know. So please Sarah, enlighten me." I said. I felt upset.

"It's so obvious that you're Daddy's favorite." She said.

"What are you talking about? All he did was take me out to lunch." I asked and said.

"Yeah, but did he take Jake and I too? Nope. Just you." She said.

"He took me out to lunch because I'm going away to college soon so I won't be home for a while. He literally said that he loves us all equally, he told me that at lunch." I said.

"I've always had to fight for Daddy's love and attention, but no matter what, you always win. You're his favorite and Jake has noticed it too. I'm sick of it. I can't keep competing with you anymore." She said.

"This isn't a competition Sarah! He loves us equally!" I said. She scoffed and left my room. Whatever. I went back to my book and read. That night at the dinner table, Sarah and I were civil to each other, but didn't talk much.

Shawn's point of view

I woke up in the morning to the feeling of someone shaking me.

"Shawn, wake up, wake up Shawn." I heard my wife say. Something was definitely wrong. Y/n was crying. I sat up right away.

"What? What's wrong?" I asked.

"Look at this note that I found on Sarah's bed when I went to wake her up for school." My wife said as she cried. I looked at the note and read it.

"Dear Mom and Daddy,

I've run away from home, so please don't come looking for me. It's so obvious that Rose is Daddy's favorite and I can't keep competing for Daddy's love, affection, and attention. I'm sick of it.

Bye,

Sarah."

I looked at my wife with wide eyes. I immediately took out my phone and tried calling my youngest child, but it went straight to voicemail.

"Shawn, what are we going to do?" Y/n asked.

"We're going to call your mom and see if she's there at her house." I said. I called my mother-in-law and she soon answered.

"Hey Shawn." She said.

"Hey, is Sarah Grace with you?" I asked.

"No. Why?" She asked. I read the note to her. "I'll keep my eye out for her and if she comes here I'll call you guys."

"Thank you. Bye." I said.

"You're welcome. Bye." She said, and we hung up. I looked at my wife and held her as I tried to think of what to do next. Rose then walked into the room.

"What's wrong?" Rose asked. She spotted the note and picked it up so she could read it. "Oh my gosh this is all my fault. She came in my room and got mad at me and I should have said something to you guys."

"Rose, it's okay. Did she say that she was going to run away from home?" I asked. Rose shook her head as she cried.

"No." Rose said.

"See, it's not your fault. We'll find her, I promise. Can you drive yourself and your brother to school please?" I asked. She nodded and left the room.

"Shawn." My wife whimpered.

"I know honey, but it's okay, we're going to find her. You stay here in case she shows up, I'll drive around town." I said and my wife nodded.

"Okay. I love you." She said. I kissed her forehead before getting out of bed so I could get dressed and leave.

"I love you too honey. Call me if she shows up." I said. Y/n nodded.

"Okay." She said. I got dressed and left. It was too early to call the police. They wouldn't get involved until she's been missing for either twenty four or forty eight hours. I got in the car and drove to some local places without any luck. I then drove to a place that's a bit of a walk away. After this, I wouldn't really know of where else to look.

I pulled up to the playground and there was Sarah Grace, sitting on the swings with a suitcase next to her. I almost cried at the sight of her. I threw my Jeep in park, turned it off, got out, jumped over the little fence, and walked over to her. She looked up and saw me.

"Sarah Grace Mendes never do that ever again. Oh my gosh thank God I found you." I said as I pulled her in for a hug but she pushed me away.

"No Daddy, I told you not to come and find me!" She said as she began to cry.

"I'm your father, and I'm not just going to let my daughter, who is more precious to me than anything in this whole entire world, just run away from home. Not going to happen. I have to call your mother. You scared the crap out of us." I said as I pulled out my phone and called my wife.

"Did you find her?" Y/n asked.

"Yes, and I'm talking to her now. We'll be home in a little bit. She was at the elementary school playground." I said.

"Oh thank God you found her. Okay, I'll see you in a little bit. I'll call my mom. I love you." Y/n said.

"Okay. I love you too." I said, and we hung up. Sarah Grace had her arms crossed as she cried.

"I specifically wrote not to come and look for me!" She said. The elementary school opens later than the middle and high school, so we had some time before we had to leave. I guided my youngest child over to a bench and we sat down.

"Sarah Grace, I'm not mad at you, okay? But you need to understand that you can't just take off like that. Your mom woke me up and showed me the note as she cried. Honey, I don't think that I've ever been so scared in my whole entire life. You're my daughter, and I will do anything in this world to protect you. I love you and your siblings equally and I'm sorry if it seems different. But Rose is about to go to college soon, and I wanted some alone time with her. When you go to college, I'll do the same thing for you. I love you honey." I said. Sarah Grace leaned on me and cried.

"I love you too. It's just like, you're always giving Rose attention. It's always Rose this, and Rose that, and then Jake and I are left on the sidelines." Sarah Grace said.

"That's not true and you know it. When you were a dancer, didn't I go to as many dance recitals that I could?" I asked. She nodded.

"Yes." She said.

"And since you've started playing field hockey, haven't I been at every game that I can go to?" I asked. She nodded.

"Yeah." She said.

"And when you're upset, am I, or am I not there for you?" I asked.

"No you're always there for me." She said. I nodded.

"Exactly. So I don't want you to ever think for a single second that I have a favorite or that I love Rose more than I love you, because that's not true in the slightest. I love you three equally. Now come on, let's go home." I said as we stood up.

"Daddy?" She asked.

"Yes sweet pea?" I asked.

"I'm sorry that I ran away from home. Can I have a hug please?" She said and asked. I pulled her in for a hug.

"Never do this ever again, do you understand me?" I asked and she nodded her head against my chest. I picked up her suitcase and we got in the car and went home. As soon as she saw her, Y/n rushed over to Sarah Grace as she cried.

"Never scare us like that ever again, oh my gosh honey." Y/n said.

"I won't Mom, I promise. I'm tired." Sarah Grace said.

"Well you're not going to school today. Go to sleep." Y/n said. Sarah Grace nodded and went up to bed. Y/n and I held each other as we cried.

"I've never been more scared in my life. I'm so glad that she's home." I said and Y/n nodded her head against my chest.

"I took the day off of work. Do you have work today?" Y/n asked. I shook my head.

"No. When Sarah Grace wakes up I'm going to spend some quality time with her." I said. Y/n nodded and looked up at me.

"Do you want to lay down for a little bit?" She asked and I kissed her forehead before nodding.

"Yeah. Let's cuddle." I said. We went upstairs and cuddled up to each other. When we all woke up, I spent some time with Sarah Grace, and when Jake got home, I spent time with him. I love all three of my kids equally, and that will never change.
