60. Taking A Break and A Surprise
I leaned on the kitchen counter doing a livestream on Instagram while I waited for my husband of two months, Shawn Mendes, to come home from a few meetings.
"I haven't made dinner yet, but I think that I have some time before I need to start it." I said to Shawn's fans over the livestream. That was when Shawn walked in.
"Babe I'm home! Oh there you are." Shawn yelled when he walked in. I kept my back to him but could see him on my screen he walked up from behind and wrapped his arms around my waist.
"Look babe, I'm doing a livestream with your fans." I said with a smile. He kissed my temple repeatedly.
"Good. I missed you baby girl." He said. I realized that something was off.
"I miss you too. How was the meeting?" I asked. He sighed and rested his head against mine. "Babe?"
"Can you end the livestream please?" He asked and I nodded before waving goodbye to them and then turning to Shawn. He immediately pulled me in for a hug and held me tight.
"What's wrong my love?" I asked. That's when I heard him begin to cry. Something wasn't right. "Shawn honey, you're worrying me." I said. He pulled away from the hug and he kept his hands on my waist as I wiped his tears away.
"Just please don't leave me honey." Shawn said.
"Oh my gosh Shawn, I would never leave you. Let's go sit on the couch and you can tell me what's going on, okay?" I asked. He nodded.
"Can I put my head on your chest please?" He asked. I nodded and I laid down on the couch. He then laid next to me, wrapped his arms around me, and put his head on my chest.
"Now what's going on babe?" I asked.
"In the meeting today, Andrew and Ziggy and the team said that they want me to get back in the studio to record an album. Then they said that they want me to go on tour as soon as possible, and I was like 'you guys do remember being at mine and Y/n's wedding only two months ago, right?' and they said yes but it's like they didn't understand it. Baby, we just got married, and I don't want to leave you. Plus I know that we want to be married for a year before we start trying to have a family and I don't want to miss our kids growing up. Honest, I was doing the math on the way home, and I'm thinking of taking a break from tour and stuff for like, five or so years." Shawn said as I continued to wipe his tears away.
"Baby boy, I will support you no matter what you do. If you want to go on tour soon, then I'll support you. If you want to wait however long before you go back on tour, I'll still support you. Shawn we're husband and wife and I'm always going to be here for you." I said. Shawn picked his head up and kissed me. I tried to put all of my love into the kiss. I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my tummy, and I felt sparks shoot through me like fireworks. Shawn pulled away from the kiss and put his head on my chest again.
"Thank you for always supporting me babe." Shawn said. I rubbed his back.
"You're welcome honey." I said. He then looked at me again.
"Are the fans going to get mad at me?" Shawn asked. I shook my head.
"No of course not! They're going to want their idol to take care of himself honey. You don't have to make a decision now, you can make it in a day or in a week or whenever you want." I said. Shawn nodded.
"Mind if I make dinner for us tonight?" Shawn asked. I smiled and shook my head.
"Not at all babe." I said.
"Okay. Ravioli?" He asked and I nodded. He then got up and made it. As he was making it, I stood behind him and wrapped my arms around him as I put my head on his back.
"I love you Shawn." I said.
"I love you too wifey." He said. After dinner I checked my phone. Fans were saying that they could tell that something was wrong during my livestream and they were worried about him. I told him and he said that it would be okay if I made a post. I took a picture of him and I with his head on my chest as I ran my fingers through his hair, and wrote a caption.
"For those of you who saw my livestream and feel worried about Shawn, I can promise you that he's okay. He's just a little stressed out right now and so he was in need of cuddles. He loves you guys so much and he doesn't want you guys to worry about him." I wrote. There was an outpouring of love in the comments, which Shawn greatly appreciated. He talked to his team, and they weren't the happiest about him wanting to take a break for that long, but they understood. The next week, he did a livestream, and I watched it from upstairs.
"Hi guys. Um, I have an announcement. Actually, I need my wife next to me for this." Shawn said. I got up and met him halfway and we went back downstairs together.
"I'm right here babe." I said. We sat on the couch and I held his hand in mine. He looked at me.
"I'm worried that I'm going to get emotional." He said. I rubbed his arm a little.
"It's okay if you get emotional Shawn. I'm right here, I've got you honey." I said. He nodded, kissed my temple and then looked back at the livestream. He sighed.
"So, as you guys know, Y/n and I got married just a little over two months ago. I love being in the studio, and I love being on tour, but I love my wife more than anything, and I want to savor married life. Honestly guys, I've always loved Y/n, but my love for her grows more and more everyday. We want to be married for a year before we start trying to have a family, and I obviously don't want to miss my kids first few years of life. I don't to miss their milestones. So, um," Shawn said. That was when he looked down and I could tell that he was holding back tears. I rubbed his back and kissed his cheek. He looked at me.
"It's okay. You're doing what's best for you baby." I whispered to him. He nodded and then looked at his phone again.
"I'm going to be taking a break from music for about five or six years. I need to be with my wife, especially since we just got married, and I don't want to miss our kids first words and them walking for the first time and things like that. I'm sorry if I'm letting you guys down." Shawn said as he put his head in his hands.
"Shawn Peter Raul Mendes, you are not at all letting anyone down. Never think that. You're doing what you feel is best for you, and your fans want you to do that and take care of yourself." I said. Shawn nodded and picked his head up.
"Sorry that I'm getting so emotional. I just feel bad. I'm still going to be active on social media and I'm still going to be writing music, I just won't be recording it and I won't be touring. Please understand my reasoning behind this." Shawn said.
"He's been so worried that you guys are going to be mad at him, which I explained to him could never happen since you guys love him so much and want what's best for him. I know that the Mendes Army are the best fans ever and without you guys, and without touring and all of that, Shawn and I never would have met, but he's doing what's best for him. I think that we should all just send him a lot of messages of love right now, because he needs to hear you guys say that you're not mad at him and that you still love him." I said to the livestream. Shawn nodded.
"Yeah I could use messages of love right now. You guys know that family has always come first, so that's what I'm doing right now. I'm going to go for now, but I love you guys so much. Talk to you guys later. Bye." Shawn said, and we both waved to the camera before he ended the livestream and saved it. He then pulled me into his lap and held me close to him.
"You did a great job babe. I'm so proud of you." I said. He looked up at me.
"Thank you. I love you honey." He said and I smiled at him.
"I love you too hubby." I said and he smiled at me a little. We soon went to bed.
After being married for a bit over a year, Shawn and I welcomed our first child, Rose Lucille Mendes. Two years later we welcomed our second child, Jacob Alexander Scott Mendes, and then two years later we welcomed our last child, Sarah Grace Mendes. Shawn loved being home because he didn't miss the kids first words, when they started crawling, when they started walking, and stuff like that. Five years after Shawn announced his break, he started to get back into the studio, and when the album was almost done, we sat down the kids so we could tell them that their Daddy was going to have to leave for tour. At the time, Rose was six, Jake was four, and Sarah was two.
"Are we in trouble?" Rose asked. Shawn and I shook our heads.
"No. We just wanted to talk to you guys about something." I said.
"So you guys know how Daddy is a singer, right? And that he goes on tour sometimes?" Shawn asked. The kids nodded.
"Yeah." They said.
"Well, Daddy has to leave for tour in a couple of months, which means that I'm going to be away from you guys for a while." Shawn said. The kids started to cry so Shawn opened up his arms and he hugged them all as the kids, and Shawn cried.
"Daddy don't leave." Rose said. He kissed the top of her head.
"I have to do it for work honey. I'm sorry. But we can still call and text and Facetime from your Mommy's phone." Shawn said. Rose nodded but continued to cry. Shawn spent the next couple of months spending a lot of time with the kids when he wasn't at rehearsals. Him, the kids and I cried a bit when he had to leave. I walked him out to the car.
"Come home to us." I said as the kids waited inside. He nodded and kissed my cheek.
"I will, I promise. I love you guys so much. I'm going to miss you Mrs. Mendes." He said.
"We love you too and I'm going to miss you too Mr. Mendes." I said. Shawn gave me one last kiss before he left and watched the car and waved until I couldn't see it anymore. I then went inside and held mine and Shawn's kids as they cried, but I had to hold it together for them.
A month later, I got a call from Shawn, so of course I picked up.
"Hi hubby." I said. The kids were taking a nap and I had been sleeping, but the phone call woke me up.
"Hey wifey. Did I wake you up?" He asked.
"It's okay." I said.
"No, go back to sleep honey, I'll just talk to you later." He said.
"No, I want to hear my husband's voice. What's up baby?" I asked.
"What do you think of us telling Rose that I won't be home for her birthday but then I surprise her?" He asked. I thought for a moment.
"So you want to torcher our eldest child?" I asked. He chuckled.
"Basically, yeah." He said.
"Hm. Okay, let's do it. The surprise will be worth it." I said.
"That's my girl! All right, I'll be off all of that week so I'll be able to spend time with you guys. I'll come home early in the wee hours of the morning, make some pancakes, and then wake you up and then we can wake up Rose together." Shawn said.
"Will you wake me up before you make the pancakes please? I want to spend time with you." I said. Shawn thought for a moment.
"Okay. Yeah I want to spend time with you too baby girl. I miss my wife." He said.
"Well your wife misses her husband. Hurry your cute butt home to me babe." I said with a giggle and he laughed.
"I will. I have to go, but I'll talk to you later and I'll let you know when I'm flying in." He said. I nodded even though he couldn't see me.
"Okay baby. I love you." I said.
"I love you too honey." He said. Later on, after we all napped, Rose came up to me.
"Mommy?" She asked.
"Yes sweet pea?" I asked.
"Will Daddy be home for my seventh birthday?" She asked and my heart broke.
"I'm sorry honey, but he has to work that day." I lied. It killed me even more when she broke down sobbing. I pulled out my phone and called Shawn.
"Hey Mrs. Mendes." He said.
"Hey, I just had to tell Rose that you have to work on her birthday and now she's crying in my arms." I said.
"Okay, let me talk to her please." He said, and I handed her the phone. I don't know what he said to her, but she stopped crying. They soon said goodbye and we all hung up. A few weeks later, I woke up to someone shaking me in the middle of the night and opened my eyes to see my handsome husband.
"Shawn!" I whisper-yelled as I got out of bed and hugged him. He chuckled quietly and hugged me back.
"Hi Y/n. Want to come downstairs and make pancakes with me?" He asked.
"What time is it?" I asked. He looked at his phone.
"Four in the morning." He said. I shrugged.
"Why don't we go downstairs and cuddle a bit and then we'll make pancakes and then wake Rosie up?" I asked. He nodded and interlaced our fingers as we went downstairs. His touch electrified me yet I felt safe and warm at the same time. I sat on his lap on the couch and we talked quietly since the kids were still sleeping. When he went to make the pancakes, he picked me up and put me on the counter so we could continue to talk.
"I'm proud of you darling." Shawn said. I tilted my head.
"Why are you proud of me?" I asked.
"You've basically been a single mother for the last couple of months, and you've been doing all of this while taking care of the house and working too." He said. I smiled.
"Well thank you, but luckily we have good friends and family members that have been helping too." I said. Shawn nodded.
"Still. You're doing a great job honey. You didn't ask to be dragged into this lifestyle of mine and the fact that you've always stuck by my side just makes me so happy and I'm so grateful." Shawn said with a smile.
"Honey, I wasn't dragged into anything. When we first started dating, I knew that I was going to get hate and stuff like that, but I also already knew that you were the one for me. I knew that our relationship would be long distance at times, but I didn't care. I just wanted you. I still do want you, and I'm always going to want you Shawn. That's never going to stop." I said. Shawn's smile widened and he gave me a kiss before going back to the pancakes.
"Well I want you too. Now and forever, I want you. I love you baby girl. Thank you for being... everything. My wife, my best friend, the mother to my kids, just, my everything." He said.
"I love you too. You're welcome and thank you for being my husband, the father to my kids, my best friend, and my everything." I said.
"Do you think you'll ever get sick of me?" Shawn asked me with a smirk which is how I knew that he was just teasing me.
"No, never." I said with a smile.
"Good. Hey, remember when we were engaged and we got my q and a session to jam out to Africa by Toto?" He asked and I laughed a little as I nodded.
"Yes! That was hilarious, oh my gosh." I said and Shawn nodded. Soon the pancakes were ready and Shawn and I went upstairs while we left the pancakes on the table. I took out my phone and started recording. Shawn walked into Rose's room first and lightly shook her to wake her up.
"Birthday girl, it's time to wake up." He said. She opened her eyes and smiled.
"Daddy!" She yelled as she threw her arms around him. He picked her up and held her in his arms.
"Happy birthday my Rosie girl." Shawn said.
"I thought that you couldn't come home for my birthday?" Rose asked. Shawn set her down on his lap as he sat on the bed.
"Did you really think that I would miss my little girl's seventh birthday?" He asked. She shook her head.
"Nooo." She said and he kissed the top of her head. I stopped recording when I heard a cry. I went into Sarah's room.
"What's wrong honey?" I asked.
"Rose's yelling woke me up." She said.
"Do you want to see why she's yelling?" I asked. Sarah nodded and I picked her up and she screamed when she saw her Daddy. Shawn laughed and had her sit next to him. I then went and got Jake.
"Hi Jakey boy!" Shawn said.
"Daddy!" Jake said as he ran over to him.
"Hi! Oh my gosh, my heart is complete again. I missed you guys so much." Shawn said.
"We missed you too Daddy. I'm so happy you're home." Rose said. Shawn kissed the top of her head again.
"I'm happy to be home too. I made you guys some pancakes." Shawn said and Rose got off his lap and went downstairs. Shawn carried Jake downstairs and I carried Sarah. Rose was already at the table waiting for us. We had a nice week of Shawn being home but soon he had to leave.
A couple months later, Shawn was performing at home in Boston, so the kids and I stood on the side of the stage as we watched him perform.
"My kids and my wife are actually here tonight. Do you guys want to see them?" Shawn asked the crowd. Sarah doesn't like loud noises, so Shawn and I decided to put headphone on her, but Jake and Rose weren't wearing them. The crowd cheered and Shawn waved for us to come out.
"Go see Daddy." I said to Jake and Rose. They ran to their dad as I carried Sarah in my arms. Shawn scooped his kids up and gave them both kisses. When I reached him he gave me a kiss and then gave Sarah a kiss too.
"Can you guys say hi to Daddy's fans?" Shawn asked.
"Hi!" Jake said into the microphone. Rose buried her face in Shawn's neck.
"Oh Rosie, don't be shy. They're not going to bite you or anything." Shawn said. She slowly picked up her head and then waved. Shawn smiled. Sarah waved too.
"Down please Daddy." Rose said and Shawn set her down. She then hid behind his legs, not liking the crowd. He laughed a little and patted her head.
"Mrs. Mendes, I actually have a surprise for you, so would you like to give the kids to their Uncle Andrew and Uncle Jake and then come back out here please?" Shawn asked and I nodded. The kids went to Shawn's manager and security guard, and I went back out to Shawn. He pulled me in for a hug.
"What are you up to Mr. Mendes?" I asked. He chuckled and then went to the microphone while holding one of my hands.
"So, my amazing wife has basically been a single mother for the past few months, and she's been great at it. Somehow she has the time to not only take care of our kids but take care of the house and work. At our wedding, for the last dance of the night, the DJ kicked everyone off the dancefloor but us, and we had our last dance of the night. So, without further ado, Mrs. Mendes, would you like to dance with me?" Shawn asked. I smiled and nodded.
"I would love to dance with you." I said and Shawn smiled. At Last by Etta James started to play and Shawn held one of my hands in his and kept his other hand on my waist. My hand was on his shoulder and we smiled at each other as the song played.
"I've missed you." Shawn whispered in my ear.
"I've missed you too." I said.
"I've found a dream, that I could speak to. A dream that I, can call my own. I found a thrill to press my cheek to. A thrill that I have never known. Oh yeah, you smile, you smile, and then the spell is cast. And here we are in heaven, for you are mine, at last." Etta James sang. At the last moment of the song, Shawn picked me up and kissed me as I wrapped my arms around his waist. He then looked at someone and held up his index finger before setting me down and going over to the microphone.
"Babe I'm having flashbacks to our wedding night." Shawn said. I laughed and then he turned to the fans. "Y/n had told me that she didn't want the song to end because that would mean that the night was going to end, so I had the DJ play it one more time." Shawn said. The song then started playing again and we danced to it again. It was beautiful. Shawn gave me a kiss and I walked off stage. I love Shawn so much. I love his love that he has for his family and his music. He's the most amazing man ever.
