51. Sarah Gets In Trouble

I served dinner to my three kids, Rose, Jake, and Sarah. My husband is the singer and songwriter Shawn Mendes and he's currently on tour, causing the kids and I to miss him terribly. For dinner I had made broccoli and chicken. I set the plates down and sat down. Fourteen year old Sarah pushed the plate away.

"I don't want this." She said.

"Well I'm not a restaurant and that's what I made for dinner. If you're not going to eat that, then you're not going to eat." I said. She crossed her arms and stared daggers at me.

"I want to Daddy to come back and cook for us. He's a better cook than you mom." She said.

"Well he's working so he can't come back right now." I said as I began to eat.

"I don't understand why Daddy has to go on tour." Sarah said.

"Sarah he goes on tour because it's part of his job. He records the music in the studio, turns it into an album, and then goes on tour. You know that sweetie." I said. She sighed.

"Well I don't understand why we have to sit down at the table to eat dinner since he's not here." She said.

"Because we're still a family and we still need to eat together." I said. She stared at me.

"I hate you Mom. Daddy is so much better than you." Sarah said.

"Sarah Grace Mendes, in this house we show each other respect." I said.

"Well I'm not going to apologize for speaking the truth." She said.

"Why do you have an attitude tonight?" I asked.

"Because I want Daddy to come home!" She yelled.

"Do not yell at me young lady. I understand that you miss your father, we all do, but that does not give you the right to yell at your mother." I said.

"I don't care! This is so stupid!" She yelled as she stood up. I was sick of her yelling and her attitude.

"Sarah Grace Mendes that's enough. Give me your phone please. You're grounded for a week." I said. She pulled her phone out of her pocket, and instead of handing it to me, she basically threw it at me. It landed on the edge of my plate, causing it to flip over and my food went all over the table. I looked at the table and then at her. "Okay, you're grounded for two weeks. Please go get me your laptop and if you even try to throw that at me you'll make it a month long grounding." I said. She stomped out of the room and went upstairs.

"Do you need help cleaning that up Mom?" Jake, my sixteen year old, asked as he pointed at my dinner. I gave him a little smile and shook my head as I began to clean it up.

"No. Thank you though." I said. Sarah came back into the room and handed me her laptop.

"Here you go." She said.

"Thank you. You're allowed to have your phone at school in case of emergency and you need to get in touch with your siblings, your dad, or any family member, but the second that you come home, I want it back, understand?" I asked. She nodded.

"Yup." She said, and then walked away. Rose and Jake finished eating and I had cleaned up my dinner. I got myself another serving since I had to throw the first plate away. Jake gave me a hug and then left the table. Rose finished and looked at me. She's eighteen and she's already very wise.

"Mom you did the right thing. She shouldn't have been treating you like that." Rose said. I nodded.

"Yeah. What city is your father in?" I asked as I thought for a moment.

"Oslo." She said.

"And do you know what time it is there?" I asked as I rubbed my head. A headache was forming. She checked her phone.

"Around eleven at night, but Daddy wouldn't mind you calling him at this hour." She said. I nodded and she left the room. I finished eating and then pulled out my phone and Facetimed Shawn. He answered after a few moments.

"Hey Mrs. Mendes. What's wrong?" He asked as he frowned. I rubbed my face, a habit that I have that I typically only do when I'm tired or stressed.

"Sarah's grounded for two weeks." I said. His eyes widened.

"What? Why?" He asked. I told him everything, and I could tell that he was upset too.

"Shawn did I do the right thing by grounding her?" I asked. Shawn nodded.

"Definitely. I'm upset that she acted like that." Shawn said.

"I've been making arrangements with Andrew, I was going to surprise the kids by surprising you, and there's a part of me that wants to say that we shouldn't do it now. But at the same time, I don't want to punish myself, you, Jake, and Rose for her behavior." I said. Shawn shook his head.

"No don't cancel it. I would like to speak with her." Shawn said. I nodded and got up and went upstairs. Sarah's bedroom door was shut, so I knocked on it.

"Who is it?" She asked.

"It's me." I said.

"Oh, then stay away." Sarah said.

"Sarah Grace Mendes, I am on the phone with your father right now and he wants to speak with you." I said. She finally opened the door.

"What did you do mom, tattle on me?" She asked.

"Sarah, he's my husband and your father. I tell him everything, especially when it comes to you and your siblings." I said. Sarah huffed and walked away before sitting on her bed and crossing her arms.

"I hate you Mom! You're the one that made Daddy leave!" She yelled.

"Sarah Grace Mendes, I am your mother and you're not allowed to speak to me like that. In this house we treat each other with respect." I said.

"I want to talk to her." Shawn said, and I could tell that he was pissed. I handed the phone over to Sarah.

"Hi Daddy." She said.

"Sarah Grace, your mother didn't make me leave. I did it for work. Your mother told me what happened and I have to say, I'm disappointed in your actions. This isn't you. Why are you acting like this?" Shawn said and asked. Sarah started to cry.

"I miss you." She said.

"I miss you guys too but you don't see me yelling and giving attitude to the band or Uncle Andrew or anyone. What you said and did, especially you basically throwing the phone, is absolutely unacceptable. You need to apologize to your mother because she did nothing wrong." Shawn said. Sarah looked up at me.

"I'm sorry Mom. I shouldn't have done what I did and I shouldn't have said what I did." Sarah said. I nodded and she handed the phone back to me.

"Thank you for apologizing." I said. She nodded.

"Does this mean that I get my laptop and phone back?" She asked. I looked at Shawn. He shook his head, so I handed the phone back to her.

"No. I'm glad that you apologized but you need to learn that an apology won't erase your actions." Shawn said. Sarah nodded.

"Okay. I'm just going to read a book. Good night Daddy, I love you." She said.

"Good night honey, I love you too." He said. She handed the phone back to me. I gave her a little wave and left the room. I then knocked on Jake's bedroom door.

"Come in!" Jake yelled. I walked in and him and Rose were sitting on his bed on his laptop, laughing at something. I smiled.

"What are you guys laughing at?" I asked.

"We're watching Dad's old interviews. He got roughed up by Drake's security team one time." Rose said. I nodded and then put the phone in front of them so they could see their father.

"Dad!" Jake said and he paused the video.

"Daddy!" Rose said.

"Hi guys. Are you being good for your mother?" He asked. They nodded.

"Yup. We miss you a lot Daddy." Rose said.

"I know honey, I miss you guys too, but I'll be home before you know it." Shawn said. The kids nodded and after talking to him for a little bit, they said good night and handed the phone back to me. I walked out of the room and went downstairs.

"I forgot to turn the lights off downstairs." I said. Shawn nodded.

"I miss you darling." Shawn said.

"I miss you too." I said as I climbed back up the stairs and got into mine and Shawn's bed. I sighed as I looked at the empty side next to me.

"What's wrong honey?" He asked.

"The bed gets so cold and lonely without you." I said. Shawn sighed and I looked back over at him.

"I'm sorry that I'm not there honey. I wish I could be there so Sarah wouldn't act like this and we could cuddle." Shawn said. I nodded.

"I know baby but it's okay. We'll see you soon, I promise." I said. Shawn smiled at me and we eventually fell asleep talking to each other.

One week later

I watched as my kids were reunited with their father during one of his q and a's. Sarah still wasn't supposed to have her phone, and last I checked, it was in my purse. But, as I sat with the rest of the fans, I saw Sarah pull her phone out and start texting. The kids were all sitting with their dad. I raised my hand to get my husband's attention, and when he saw me, he laughed and pointed at me.

"Yes, the most beautiful girl in the world who happens to be my wife and the mother to my three children, what's your question?" He asked, and I blushed.

"Could you do me a favor please?" I asked. He nodded.

"Yeah, what's up babe?" He asked. I pointed at Sarah and he looked at her. "Sarah Grace Mendes, you know that you're not supposed to have your phone."

"But Daddy." She whined. He shook his head as he held out his hand so she could give him the phone.

"No but's. You know that you're grounded and that you're not supposed to have it. You're only allowed to have it when you're at school in case you need to get in touch with a family member. You're not in school, so please give me your phone." Shawn said, sternly, but he wasn't yelling.

"I don't get it. Why do you always have to take mom's side?" She asked.

"I don't always take her side. There have been times when I've taken your side, but you yelled at your mother, basically threw your phone at her and gave her a lot of attitude. I want your phone Sarah Grace." He said. She sighed and gave it to him.

"Fine." She said.

"Don't start giving me an attitude Sarah Grace. We'll discuss this more later." He said. Shawn then stood up and walked over to me a little. I stood up and took the phone from him.

"Thank you. It was in my purse, she must have gone in there." I said. Shawn nodded and then went back up to where the kids were. After the q and a, Shawn took Sarah into his dressing room so they could talk. After about ten minutes of that, Shawn let Jake, Rose, and I into his dressing room. He sat down on the couch.

"Come here babe." Shawn said and patted his lap. I smiled and sat on his lap. He wrapped his arms around my waist and I wrapped my arms around his shoulders.

"I love you." I said. His smile widened and he kissed my cheek.

"I love you too." Shawn said. The kids and I spent the rest of the week with him, and it was really nice. The kids and I were sad to leave him, but we knew it would only be a little while longer until we saw him again.
