199. Sarah
I've been married to the singer and songwriter Shawn Mendes for a little over six years now, and we have three beautiful children together. Rose Lucille Mendes, who's five, Jacob "Jake" Alexander Scott Mendes, who's three, and Sarah Grace Mendes, who's one. Sarah is our last baby. When Shawn and I first started to talk about our future together, we decided to have three kids, and we had their names picked out way before they were born.
I was standing at the sink, doing some dishes when I felt arms wrap around my waist. I jumped for a moment since I hadn't been expecting this, but then I felt the person kiss my shoulder and knew that it was Shawn.
"Shhh darling, it's just me." He said. I relaxed into his touch.
"Hi baby." I said.
"Hi. Why do you always do the dishes if we have a dishwasher?" Shawn asked as he rested his head on my shoulder. I laughed.
"Well I have to make sure that the dishes are clean!" I said.
"And they will be, in this magical thing that we have that's called a dishwasher." Shawn said with a laugh and I laughed too.
"I want it spotless. You know me, you know that I'm a perfectionist." I said. Shawn kissed my head.
"I do know that babe. Hey, I was thinking -" He started.
"I thought that I could smell something burning." I teased. Shawn laughed and I knew that he was rolling his eyes.
"Stop that. Anyways, what do you think about you and I taking Sarah out for the day? We could go to the beach or something." Shawn asked and said.
"What about Jake and Rose?" I asked.
"I've already talked to your mom and she said that she'll take them for the day. I just figure that since she's our last baby, we should spend some quality time with her." Shawn said as I finished the dishes and turned around. I nodded.
"Okay." I said. Shawn smiled.
"Okay. Let's go to the beach." Shawn said.
"Which one?" I asked.
"We could go to Nantasket beach. It's a little less than an hour away." Shawn said and I nodded. We then went upstairs to get ready. I changed into a swimsuit, and then put on a black dress and a denim jacket as Shawn got Sarah ready. When I walked into her nursery, I smiled at the sight in front of me. Shawn was smiling at his youngest child, who is so beyond precious to him. He dressed her in a yellow floral dress with a white little jacket. He then smiled at me when he noticed me.
"She looks so cute babe." I said.
"Thanks honey. Will you watch her while I get ready please?" Shawn asked and I nodded.
"Yeah." I said. I brought her downstairs and soon Shawn joined us. Jake and Rose were already sitting in the living room with Sarah and I.
"Are you guys ready?" Shawn asked. I looked up at him. Holy crap he's handsome. He was dressed in a denim jacket, white shirt, and black skinny jeans. We all nodded.
"Yeah." We said. We dropped Jake and Rose off at my mom's house and then headed to the beach. I held Shawn's hand in my lap as he drove, just like I always do. His touch electrified me, yet I felt safe and warm all at the same time.
"I love you Mr. Mendes." I said. Shawn smiled.
"I love you too Mrs. Mendes." He said and my smile widened.
"How is it that it's been a little over six years since we got married and you calling me Mrs. Mendes still hasn't gotten old?" I asked. Shawn laughed as he rubbed my hand with his thumb.
"I don't know. Thank you by the way." He said.
"For what?" I asked.
"For making me a father." He said. I looked at his side profile and smiled.
"Well thank you for making me a mother." I said. Shawn smiled and placed a gentle kiss on my hand.
"You're welcome baby girl. Can you believe it? In December it will ten years since I asked you to be my girlfriend and it's been six years since we got married? And now we have three beautiful children together. Holy crap I'm the luckiest man in the world and that's all because of you darling." Shawn said. I smiled.
"I can't believe it either honey. You've made me the luckiest woman in the world." I said. Shawn smiled, kissed my hand again, and we soon arrived at the beach. Shawn turned around in his seat to face Sarah.
"You ready for the seat sweet pea?" Shawn asked but she just clapped her hands, causing Shawn and I to smile. We got out of the car and Shawn got Sarah out of her seat. I held one of Sarah's hands and Shawn held her other. Shawn and I smiled as we picked her up so we could swing her back and forth. She laughed and smiled to her heart's delight.
"I love this. Thank you so much for this Shawn. She seems to be having so much fun." I said.
"Well I have to keep my sweets happy, don't I?" Shawn said. We then brought her close to the water.
"She doesn't know how to swim yet, we have to be careful." I said.
"I know baby. I'm going to get in the water with her a little." He said. I nodded.
"Wait, do we have towels?" I asked.
"Yeah they're in the car." Shawn said. I nodded.
"Okay baby. I'll watch from here." I said as I sat down. Stripped down to his swim trunks and he took off Sarah's outfit to reveal her (clean) diaper. I smiled as Shawn slowly waded into the water with her. He smiled at them as I watched Shawn bounce her up and down in the water. She smiled and laughed.
"Do you like this Sarah? Are you having fun?" He asked. I took my phone out and took a picture of the two of them and then posted it on Instagram.
"Shawn and I decided that we would spend some quality time with our last little one. Shawn is currently playing with her in the water! He's such an amazing father and I love how much he dotes on our kids. I love seeing his smile get bigger when he hears the kids laugh, or when he's pushing Rose on the swings and she says 'Higher Daddy! Higher!' or when he sees them having fun. I love my husband and our kids so much. I'm the luckiest woman in the world." I wrote. I then set my phone down and saw Shawn and Sarah coming out of the water.
"I think that she had some fun. Could you hear her laughing?" Shawn said and asked. His eyes were twinkling and his smile was wide.
"Yup. I hope you don't mind that I took a picture while you guys were in the water and posted it on Instagram." I said.
"No that's fine babe. Come here Sarah, let's sit down." Shawn said. He sat down next to me. Sarah walked towards Shawn and then made grabby hands at him. "What's up princess?" He asked her.
"Dada." She said. He smiled at her.
"What's up honey? You okay?" He asked.
"Lap." She said. Shawn smiled, knowing what she meant, and picked her up and put her on his lap.
"Look at this, I have two out of three of my girls with me." Shawn said. I nodded, and even though Shawn was wet and I wanted to stay dry, I kissed Shawn's muscular bicep and then rested my head on his arm.
"You're a hunk." I said and Shawn laughed.
"Thank you gorgeous." Shawn said. I picked my head up and looked at him.
"I mean it. Not only are you a hunk, but you're an amazing man, husband, and father. I love you so much Shawn." I said. Shawn smiled at me and put his lips on mine. I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, I felt sparks shoot through my body like fireworks, and I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my tummy. I then felt a small hand on my face and pulled away. Sarah was looking at me.
"What just happened?" Shawn asked.
"I think our daughter just tried to prevent me from kissing you." I said with a laugh and Shawn laughed too. He kissed the side of Sarah's head.
"Sarah, are you going to let Mommy kiss Daddy?" He asked. She shook her head.
"No." She said. Our eyes widened.
"Why not?" Shawn asked.
"I want the kisses." She said. Shawn smiled and then kissed her cheek repeatedly, causing her to smile and laugh like crazy. I was tempted to take out my phone to videotape this beyond cute moment, but I decided not to. This was their moment. Yes, I do love posting about my husband and kids because I'm so proud of them and I love them so much, but at the same time, I don't want to post about every single thing. I still want our kids to live at least a semi-normal and private life, no matter how famous their father is. Shawn looked at me.
"You okay darling?" He asked. I nodded.
"Yeah. I was thinking of taking out my phone to videotape this, but I decided against it. I love posting about you and the kid, but at the same time, I want our children to have a semi-normal and private life. I know that they're going to grow up knowing that their father is a famous and legendary singer, but I still want them to be normal kids. I don't want them to be spoiled brats, and I know that you and I, along with the people in our family, won't let that happen." I said. Shawn nodded.
"Yeah. I like posting about them too, but like you said, I want them to have normal lives. I feel bad to be completely honest." Shawn said. I frowned as I watched him watch the ocean.
"Why?" I asked.
"Because of the fact that I'm a famous singer, they're going to be watched too. I'm glad that we live in Massachusetts and not in Los Angeles. If we lived in L. A., then each of their steps would be watched by the paparazzi, but since we live in the suburbs of Massachusetts, not all of their steps will be watched. I just feel bad because obviously they're going to be in the spotlight a bit." Shawn said. I nodded and rubbed his back.
"But we're protective of them, and we'll never let anything bad happen to them." I said. Shawn looked at me with wide eyes.
"If anyone ever touches our kids, it'll be the last thing that they ever do. I swear to God, I'm protective of them and I know that you are too." Shawn said and I nodded.
"Yeah. I love how you are with our kids." I said. Shawn smiled at me, causing butterflies to erupt in my stomach, and then he smiled at Sarah, who was looking out at the water. He kissed the top of her head and she looked up at him.
"Hi Dada." She said. His smile widened.
"Hi sweet pea." He said. We all sat in silence for a little bit before Sarah started to get restless and then began to cry.
"What's wrong honey?" I asked.
"Diaper uncomfortable." She said. I looked at Shawn, who immediately held her as he stood up.
"Okay. We'll change your diaper and then go. Where are the bathrooms?" Shawn asked. I spotted them.
"Right there." I said as I pointed. Shawn nodded.
"Do you mind taking her in there? I'm guessing that they have something that you can put her on." Shawn asked and said. I had the diaper bag with me so I took her out of Shawn's arms and brought her to the bathroom. Shawn said that he would wait outside.
"Don't worry honey, I'll get you all cleaned up." I said as Sarah continued to cry. I changed her and she stopped crying. Shawn smiled when he saw us as he talked to someone on the phone.
"Well I have to go Niall, two out of three of my princess just stepped out. Talk to you later man. Bye." Shawn said, and hung up.
"Hi. Everything okay with Niall?" I asked. Shawn nodded as we headed to the car. Shawn kept one hand on my back as we walked and I held Sarah. Some people were staring at us, but they didn't ask for pictures, which I was a bit grateful for.
"Yeah he's good. He saw your post and thought that it was cute." Shawn said and I smiled.
"Well that's nice." I said and we put Sarah back in the car and went to pick up Jake and Rose.
"Did you guys have fun?" My mom asked. We nodded.
"Yeah. Shawn brought her into the water and she absolutely loved it." I said.
"Yeah and then when she was sitting on my lap, I went to give Y/n a kiss and she pushed Y/n away and said that she wanted the kisses." Shawn said and my mom laughed and smiled.
"Well Jake and Rose had fun here too. Y/n, can I talk to you in the kitchen please?" My mom said and asked. I nodded and we went in the kitchen.
"What's up?" I asked.
"Well, while you guys were at the beach, Rose asked why it is that when you guys all go in the city, people ask for pictures of her Daddy and of her. How do I explain his career to a five year old?" My mom said. I sighed and nodded.
"Okay. I'll talk to Shawn and we'll figure it out. What did you say to her?" I asked.
"I told her that either her Mommy or her Daddy would explain it to her. When strangers ask for pictures of her, what do you guys do?" Mom asked.
"We tell them no. It's okay to take a picture with me or with Shawn, but they're our little ones and we need to protect them. Shawn and I were talking about the fact that we're protective of them when we were at the beach." I said. My mom nodded and we soon left and got in the car.
"What was that about?" Shawn asked.
"I'll tell you when we get home." I said and he nodded. When we got home, we put the kids down for naps and then went into our own bedroom.
"So what was that about?" Shawn asked again and I told him. He sighed and nodded as he ran his fingers through his hair.
"How do we explain this to them?" I asked. He thought for a moment and shrugged.
"I don't know. Maybe we can just come out and tell them that their father is a famous singer and he has fans and that's why people ask for pictures. I don't think that they'll fully understand until they're older, but still, we can try and explain it to them." Shawn said. I nodded.
"Okay." I said. Him and I napped for a bit. Later on, we sat the kids down on the couch downstairs in the living room.
"Are we in trouble?" Jake asked. Shawn and I shook our heads.
"No. We just want to explain something." I said.
"Rose, today you asked Meimei why random people take pictures of you and why they also take pictures of me." Shawn said. He then went on to explain what he does for a living and I could tell that the kids didn't understand fully, but they nodded anyways. "Can I have a hug please?" Shawn asked. The kids went running to him.
"DADDY!" They yelled as they hugged him. Shawn then looked at me.
"Do you guys think that your mother will hug me too?" Shawn asked.
"Mommy hug Daddy!" Rose said. Shawn was crouched down so he could hug the kids, so I crouched down and hugged him too.
"I'm the luckiest man in the world." Shawn said as he looked at us. I smiled, knowing that Shawn had made me the luckiest girl in the world. I love Shawn and our kids so much.
