165. Grandma and Grandpa Mendes

A/n: Okay so this one is a bit different than what I usually do, but oh well. I feel like Shawn would still be good looking at seventy years old. Also, this is set waaaay in the future. Anyways, please enjoy this imagine. Okay, without further ado, let's begin, shall we?

"Hey Mom, what should we do to celebrate Victoria's big eighteenth birthday?" My oldest daughter, Rose, asked me.

"Well we could have all of the grandkids here and your siblings could come and we could celebrate her birthday as a family." I said. Rose nodded. My husband, Shawn Mendes, and I, are about to celebrate forty five years of marriage on the same day that our eldest grandchild, Victoria, turns eighteen.

"Okay. Where is Dad anyways?" Rose asked as Victoria walked back into the room.

"Oh he had to meet with Andrew and Josiah about something." I said. Rose nodded and Shawn walked in the door.

"Grandpa!" Victoria yelled. I smiled as I watched her run into Shawn's arms.

"Hi jelly bean. How are you?" He asked. He calls all of his grandkids jelly bean for some reason, but it's cute and they all love it.

"Good. How are you?" She asked. He smiled.

"I'm good. How's school going?" Shawn asked as he sat down. For a seventy year old man, he still looks good. But I'm his wife, so then again maybe I'm biased. Victoria sat next to Shawn.

"Good. Next month is the end of the school year. Are we going to go to the summer house this year?" Victoria asked. Shawn nodded.

"That's the plan." He said. After mine and Shawn's oldest child, Sarah, graduated from high school, Shawn and I decided that we wanted a summer home, so we have our house in Massachusetts, and then a house in Maine, big enough for plenty of kids and grandkids to visit. I still remember when we bought it so many years ago - twenty two years ago.

"What do you think of this one babe? It seems big enough." Shawn asked and said. We were sitting in his office on one of those real estate websites. I leaned forward and looked at his laptop.

"It looks good. Does it show more pictures of it?" I asked. Shawn nodded.

"Yeah." He said.

"How much is it?" I asked nervously. Shawn checked and my eyes widened.

"Almost three million dollars, but we can afford it." Shawn said. I sighed and Shawn looked at me.

"Are you sure?" I asked. He nodded and kissed the top of my head.

"Yup. Should we request a private showing?" He asked.

"Well let's find out more about it." I said. He nodded.

"There's ten bedrooms, six full bathrooms, one half bathroom, five fireplaces, 2.3 acres of land, four garage spaces, a deck, a patio with a screened in porch, a security system, separate three bedroom guest quarters, and it's a short stroll away from Perkins Cove in Ogunquit." Shawn said. My eyes widened.

"Shawn, it sounds perfect." I said. He nodded.

"I know. Should we request a private showing?" He asked. I thought for a moment.

"Are you absolutely positive that we can afford both that house and this one?" I asked. Shawn nodded.

"Yup." He said. I nodded.

"Okay. Let's do it." I said. We requested a private showing, and when we got there and toured the beautiful house, Shawn and I immediately said yes. Soon, we were the proud owners of two houses.

"Mrs. Mendes?" I heard Shawn ask. I looked at him.

"Hmm?" I asked. He chuckled, and the mere sound gave me butterflies.

"You good over there? You zoned out." Shawn asked and said. I nodded.

"Yeah. I was just thinking about when we first looked at our summer home online and then when we saw it in person for the first time. Remember my reaction to seeing that a mini library?" I asked. Shawn laughed and nodded.

"Yup. Remember my reaction when I saw the really nice piano?" Shawn asked. I nodded.

"Yup." I said. Shawn smiled at me and I smiled back. I love books, so when I saw the mini library, I had looked at Shawn with wide eyes and he did the same to me when he saw the piano. Soon, it was time to celebrate Victoria's birthday, and mine and Shawn's forty fifth anniversary. I woke up on the morning of May twenty third, 2069 to an empty bed. I went downstairs and found Shawn making pancakes, just like always has ever since we moved in together. He smiled at me.

"Good morning gorgeous. Happy anniversary." Shawn said as I walked over to him.

"Good morning handsome. Happy anniversary." I said as I rest my head on his arms. He kissed the top of my head and I looked up at him and smiled.

"Give me a kiss darling." Shawn said. I put my lips on his and felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my tummy, and I felt sparks shoot through me like fireworks. Shawn and I pulled away and smiled at each other.

"How is it that after forty five years of marriage and forty nine years of being together, you still give me such insane feelings?" I asked. Shawn chuckled as he went back to working on the pancakes.

"I don't know, but you still give me those same insane feelings too. Remember our first dance?" Shawn asked as I leaned on the counter next to him.

"Of course. We danced to Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran." I said. He nodded.

"Well one of the lines in that song is 'And darling I will be loving you 'til we're 70' and I just want to point out that we're both seventy years old and we're still going strong. I'll love you forever baby. Our love for each other is infinite, it's never going to end." Shawn said and I smiled.

"Oh honey I feel the same way." I said and he smiled at me. We had breakfast and then our kids and grandkids came over. Shawn and I have ten grandchildren, so it's a good thing that some of the bedrooms in the summer house, which we named Hip Nautic, have more than one bed in them.

Rose and her husband Rich had Victoria, Joan, and Amelia. Jake and his wife Brittany had Lacey, Lily, Liam, and Lucas. And Sarah and her husband Daniel had John, Caroline, and Jacqueline. With the house full of our kids and grandkids, Shawn and I looked on proudly as we stood in the kitchen of our house in Massachusetts. We live in Massachusetts for most of the year, and then travel up to Maine for the summer. Shawn leaned over and whispered in my ear, sending shivers down my spine.

"I love the fact that Rose has always been so proud to be a Mendes that she hyphenated her last name when she got married. Rose Lucille Mendes-Winchester." He whispered. I nodded. Obviously Jake kept the Mendes last name, and our youngest, went from Sarah Grace Mendes to Sarah Grace McKeon when she married Daniel.

"I know, me too." I said. Soon, it was time for Victoria's presents.

"Before I get my presents, Grandma and Grandpa, we all know that it's your forty fifth wedding anniversary, so my siblings, cousins and I wanted to get you guys a gift, so we made you this." Victoria said as she handed us something that was wrapped. We were all squished into the living room, a few people spilling into the kitchen, but Shawn and I sat next to each other, just like usual. Shawn and I opened it and smiled. There was a coin from each significant year and then it said the date and what happened that year next to the coin. I looked at Shawn and then at the grandkids.

"This is so beautiful. Thank you guys so much." I said. Shawn nodded.

"Yes, thank you guys. Where should we hang it?" Shawn asked.

"Maybe we can take down the mirror that's next to the front door and hang this there instead." I said. Shawn nodded.

"Sounds perfect. I'll do that later." Shawn said.

"I got it Dad." Jake said.

"Why? Do you think that your father is too old to hang something up?" Shawn asked with a smirk. Jake laughed.

"Hey, you said it, not me." Jake said and we all laughed. Shawn set the present aside.

"Jake, Sarah and I also got you a gift." Rose said.

"Hey, the spouses helped!" Rich said and we all laughed. Rose kissed his cheek.

"That's true. Anyways, here you guys go. We love you Mom and Dad." Rose said as she handed us something.

"We love you guys too." Shawn said. We opened up the present and it was a star certificate. I gasped and put my hand to my mouth as happy tears formed in my eyes.

"Oh my gosh that's beautiful. Thank you guys so much." I said. The kids had named a star "The Shawn and Y/n Mendes Family" and the certificate even said where it's located in the sky.

"I love it. Thank you guys. We'll have to frame this and put it in the family room." Shawn said and I nodded. We all gave Victoria her presents. Shawn got out the cake and we sang happy birthday to her. A couple months later, all fifteen of us - Shawn and I in one car, Rose and her family in another car, Jake and his family in another car, and Sarah and her family in another car.

"I always love going back to our summer home." I said. Shawn nodded and agreed with me. Soon, we all pulled through the gates of our driveway and got out. The grandkids all ran inside. They've always called the summer home their favorite place on Earth. We all went inside and unpacked. I then went out on our screened in porch that's on the second floor and looked out and the grandkids all playing together. I felt strong arms wrap around me from behind and jumped.

"Shhh, it's just me darling. You okay?" Shawn asked. I realized that I was crying. I nodded as I continued to watch the grandkids.

"Yeah. Just really happy. Look at them Shawn. They don't act like cousins. They act like they're siblings." I said. Shawn nodded his head against mine.

"We have an amazing family Y/n Mendes." Shawn said. I smiled.

"We do. Our parents would be so proud." I said. Shawn kissed the side of my head and nodded.

"My mum would love the fact that one of her great grandbabies is named after her. Lacey Karen Mendes." Shawn said. I nodded.

"Yup. Piano tonight?" I asked as I turned around to face Shawn. He wrapped his arms around my shoulders and I wrapped my arms around his waist. He nodded.

"Yup." He said. I then rested my head on his chest.

"Shawn baby?" I asked.

"Hm?" He responded as he rubbed the back of my head.

"I'm getting all old and wrinkly. Do you still think that I'm beautiful? Be honest." I asked and said. Shawn pulled away from the hug a little and held my face in his hands.

"My love, you're still the most beautiful, the most gorgeous, and the most stunning being I've ever seen. I'm getting old and wrinkly too. Do you still think that I'm handsome?" He asked.

"Oh Shawn, you're the most handsome man in the world." I said. He smiled and kissed my cheek.

"Thank you baby." He said.

"You're welcome." I said. Later on, we called everyone in for what we call "Piano Time." The first night that we get here every summer, before we all go off to bed, Shawn plays the piano. The grandkids decide what song they want him to play, and he plays it for them. He usually ends up playing about five songs, but he doesn't mind it, in fact, he loves it.

"Wait, Grandpa, before we start piano time, will you tell us a story please?" Amelia asked.

"Well what type of story do you want to hear?" Shawn asked as he sat at the piano. She smiled.

"I want to hear more stories about you and Grandma." She said. Shawn smiled at me and waved for me to come over. I moved my chair next to his and he put his arm on the back of it.

"What story should I tell them Mrs. Mendes?" Shawn asked. I shrugged.

"Whatever story you want." I said. Shawn kissed my wrinkly cheek and then thought for a moment. Suddenly, his eyes went wide and he smiled.

"Okay, I know which one. So, your grandmother and I were at our wedding reception with our guests, and because we were out on the dancefloor, your grandma took off her heels and put them on her chair at our table - we had our own table of course, and there were signs on the back of our chair that said 'Mr.' and 'Mrs.' but anyways, your grandma and I were out on the dancefloor, and then we went back to our table. Remember what happened next Mrs. Mendes?" Shawn asked. I nodded.

"Oh yes." I said. Shawn chuckled and rubbed my arm and shoulder a little as I leaned on him.

"So we get back to our table, and her heels are nowhere to be found. So I go up to the microphone and said something like 'Has anyone seen my wife's heels? They were on her chair but now we can't find them.' and everybody said that they had no clue where they were. So time is going on, and your grandma and I realize that we have to leave in half in hour so we could get back to the house, get changed, and then head to the airport so we could go on our honeymoon. So I go back up to the microphone and said 'Seriously guys, my wife and I have to leave soon and we still can't find her heels.' and that's when my best friend from growing up, Brian Craigen, lifts them up. I was so frustrated with him! He had hidden them underneath the table." Shawn said and we all laughed.

"Where did you guys go for your honeymoon?" Lucas asked. Shawn and I smiled at each other before I rested my head on his shoulder again.

"Well, first we went to Hawaii and spent a week there, and then we spent a week in Ireland, and then we spent a week in Lithuania, and then we spent the last week of our honeymoon in Australia." Shawn said.

"What place did you guys like the most and why?" Liam asked.

"I loved Hawaii the most. Remember what happened in Hawaii Mrs. Mendes?" Shawn asked, and I knew that he was referring to when he took my virginity. I blushed and nodded.

"Yes but let's not talk about it. The grandkids are too young." I said and Shawn laughed.

"Well what place was your favorite darling?" Shawn asked. I smiled.

"I liked Lithuania a lot. That's where my great-grandmother is from so it was cool to see the town that she had come from." I said. Shawn kissed the top of my head and nodded.

"How do you guys do it?" Caroline asked.

"Do what?" Shawn and I asked.

"You guys have been married for forty five years and together for almost forty nine, but you guys seem like you're still so in love with each other." Caroline said.

"Well, my dear, that's because we are still so in love with each other." I said.

"Yup. My love for your grandmother grows more and more everyday." Shawn said and I smiled as I looked up at him.

"I love you." I said. He smiled at me.

"I love you too." He said. After piano time, we all went up to bed. Shawn and I got underneath the covers but I could tell that something was on his mind.

"What's up bubs?" I asked.

"Y/n, I'm getting up there in age. I can't do concerts like I used to or hit the notes the same way. I'm thinking... I'm thinking of retiring." Shawn said. My eyes widened.

"Really?" I asked. He looked at me and nodded.

"Yeah. I mean, I love what I do, but in a couple of months I'll be seventy one years old. And it's not like I need the money from touring or albums or anything." Shawn said. I nodded. By the time that Shawn was twenty, he was already worth twelve million dollars. Since then he's gone on tour plenty of times. I don't even know how much money he's worth now, but I don't care about that, I care about what's in his heart.

"It's up to you babe. Whatever you want to do, I'll support you, you know that." I said. Shawn nodded.

"Okay. Tomorrow we'll have a family meeting and I'll tell everyone. I just... I'm getting too old for this and I want to spend more time with you and our kids and our grandkids." Shawn said. I nodded and kissed his cheek.

"I know babe. You seem tired and I know that I'm tired. Should we lay down and go to sleep now?" I asked and he nodded. The next morning we called a family meeting. Shawn had me stand beside him for moral support.

"Is everything okay Grandpa and Grandma?" Lily asked. Shawn nodded.

"Yeah. I just, I have an announcement. I'm honestly worried that you guys are going to be mad at me." Shawn said.

"No!" Everyone, including me, said. Shawn sighed and tears formed in his eyes. He cleared his throat before he began to speak.

"I'm almost seventy one years old. I can't do world tours or even just a single concert like I used to. I can't hit the same notes that I was able to when I was younger. When I met your mom, and your grandmother, I was able to dance around on stage to Particular Taste and jump up and down. I can't do that stuff anymore." Shawn said. He then paused.

"Dad what are you saying?" Rose asked. Shawn sighed.

"I'm saying that I'm going to retire from music." Shawn said.

"WHAT?" Everyone basically yelled.

"Please understand that this was not an easy decision. I've been touring since I was about seventeen years old. I took a break for about six or seven years after Y/n and I got married, and then I would go on tour again. I'll obviously still do piano time and sing for you guys, but I'm not going to go to the studio anymore and make anymore albums." Shawn said. Everyone nodded.

"We understand Dad." Sarah said. Shawn gave her a hug.

"Thank you. I would say group hug but there's so many of us that we would all get squished." Shawn said and we all laughed. The grandkids went out to play while they're parents watched them and Shawn and I watched them from our chairs on the screened in porch. "Do you think that I did the right thing?"

"Of course. Are you going to do a live stream to announce it?" I asked. Shawn thought for a moment before nodding.

"Yeah, but I should probably talk to Andrew before I do that." Shawn said. I nodded.

"Okay." I said. He called Andrew and told him. Shawn then started a live stream, and tears ran down his face as he announced his retirement. He explained it the same way that he did to the kids and the grandkids.

"And I'm sorry if this makes you guys sad, or upset in any way, but I have to do what's best for myself and my family. Y/n and I have three kids and ten grandchildren. Every summer we come up to Maine and just spend time together. I want more moments like that." Shawn said.

"GRANDPA!" Lacey yelled as she ran through the house and onto the porch. I put my finger up to my lips and she stopped short when she saw him crying.

"Hi jelly bean. Everything okay?" Shawn asked.

"Yeah, I just wanted to play with you. Why are you crying Grandpa?" She asked.

"I'm doing a live stream and I'm telling my fans that I'm retiring from music. Want to sit with me?" He asked and she nodded.

"Yeah." She said. She pulled up a chair and leaned her head on Shawn's arm.

"This is what I want more of. I want more time with my grandkids. I love all of you guys, I really do, I love you guys with all of my heart, but I also love my family, and like I said, I'm getting too old for this, so please understand. Lacey, do you think that I'm old?" Shawn asked as he looked at his granddaughter.

"You don't look old Grandpa." She said and I giggled. Shawn's jaw dropped.

"Thank you for saying that, but does that mean that you think that I really am old?" Shawn asked. Lacey laughed.

"Nooo." She said and Shawn smiled and kissed her head.

"Why aren't you playing with your sibling and cousins?" Shawn asked.

"I like you more Grandpa." She said.

"Awww thank you jelly bean." Shawn said.

"You're welcome. Grandpa?" She asked.

"Yes?" He asked.

"Why do you call all of the grandkids jelly bean?" She asked.

"In case I forget your names." He said with a smirk. I bursted out laughing. "Your grandmother liked that joke. No, that's not why I call you guys jelly bean. I call you guys that because when you guys were little, whenever you would come over mine and Grandma's house, you guys would be so excited that you would be jumping up and down like one of those jelly beans." Shawn said. Lacey nodded.

"Oh." She said. Shawn smiled at her before turning back to his phone.

"So guys, this won't be my last live stream, and I'm going to continue to post on social media -" Shawn started.

"Grandpa you barely even know how to post on social media." Lacey said with a giggle.

"I'm doing a live stream at seventy years old, aren't I? Anyways, I love you guys with all my heart. I'm going to spend time with my favorite jelly beans now. Bye for now." Shawn said and ended the live stream. I walked over to the other side of him and kissed his cheek.

"I'm proud of you." I said.

"Thank you darling." Shawn said. He then went outside with Lacey and the other grandkids. After a bit, he came back inside and sat down next to me as I sat in our library.

"Hi bubs." I said.

"Hi. I think I'm going to like retirement." Shawn said and I smiled.

"Yeah?" I asked. He nodded.

"Yeah. More time with the family and with you. I love you Mrs. Mendes." He said. I gave him a gentle and loving kiss.

"I love you too." I said. I'm so proud of all that Shawn has accomplished in his career, but I'm also happy that he's retiring. More time with my favorite guy.
