156. "What If I Get Fired?"

A/n: Okay, so let's pretend that it's February. Also, explicit language in this one. Anyways, please enjoy this imagine. Okay, without further ado, let's begin!

I've been an adjustment counselor at the high school that I graduated from for five months now, and I love it. I was standing in the area near the computers that are outside of my office looking at something, when I heard a noise.

"Psst. Psst." I heard. I looked around to figure out the noise, and saw a student waving me over just as they were making the noise again. I walked over to the student.

"Hi, so instead of just making a noise to call me over, please say Mrs. Mendes. That's the proper way to call me over, rather than making a noise. When I had a dog I would make a noise to get her attention, but I'm not a dog and my name is Mrs. Mendes." I said, feeling a bit disrespected. The boy, Chad, gave me a dirty look.

"Well I was just trying to get your attention." He said.

"And you could have gotten my attention by saying my name. All you had to do was say Mrs. Mendes, and I would have come over." I said.

"Well the noise got you to come over." He said.

"Yes because I was looking around to figure out what the noise was and I saw you waving me over as you were making the noise. All I'm asking is that you're more respectful next time and just simply say my name. What do you need help with?" I said and asked. He sighed and then looked me up and down.

"Wait, are you married?" He asked. I nodded.

"Yes I am." I said. Where was he going with this?

"That doesn't surprise me. You're very good looking Mrs. Mendes." He said.

"That's inappropriate for you to say. I'm your counselor. What do you need help with Chad?" I asked, feeling irritated and disrespected.

"Well I don't know how to apply to this college." He said, pointing at the computer screen.

"That would be a question for Mr. Evans. I'm not sure about how to do it." I said.

"But aren't you a counselor?" He asked. I nodded.

"Yes. I'm an adjustment counselor, Mr. Evans is a guidance counselor so this is more his area." I said.

"Well what's your area?" Chad asked, his tone laced with rudeness.

"First of all, please don't use a rude tone with me, and second of all, I deal with more personal things, not with scheduling and college things." I said.

"You know what? I don't like how you're treating me, I think that I'll report you to Principal Miller." He asked and said. My stomach went into a knot.

"Okay, that's fine. I'll tell her that you were being rude and disrespectful to me." I said and then went to Mr. Evans's office. He was my guidance counselor when I went here. I knocked on his door.

"Hi Y/n. What can I do for you?" He asked.

"Can I talk to you for a second?" I asked. He nodded.

"Sure." He said. I sat down and shut the door.

"Well first of all, this feels like old times when I was a student here and would come to you with problems, but anyways, I just had an interaction with a student and now the student is threatening to report me to Principal Miller and I don't know what to do." I said. He turned his chair towards me more and frowned.

"What happened?" He asked, so I told him. His eyes widened, especially at the comment that Chad had made about my looks.

"Am I going to get in trouble with Principal Miller?" I asked. Mr. Evans shook his head.

"No. If she calls you into her office, just let her know about everything that you just told me. You're absolutely right, he was being disrespectful to you, and considering that you're his counselor, he was also being inappropriate. Y/n, I remember you from when you were a student here, and I can tell that you're upset and nervous, but everything's going to be okay. Try not to overthink it, okay?" Mr. Evans said and asked. I took a deep breath and nodded.

"Okay. Wow you really do remember how I was when I was here." I said with a laugh and he nodded as he smiled.

"Yup. I'll help him now, but everything will be okay." He said and I nodded.

"Okay, thank you." I said.

"You're welcome." He said as we stepped out of his office. Chad was staring at us.

"What did you do Mrs. Mendes? Tattle on me?" Chad asked. Mr. Evans, who towers over me at 6 feet and three inches, crossed his arms.

"Chad, you need to treat Mrs. Mendes with respect. She's your counselor. Now, what exactly do you need help with?" He asked and I went back into my office and pulled out my phone. I needed to text my husband, the singer and songwriter Shawn Mendes.

Me: Hi honey. When I get home from work, can we cuddle or take a relaxing bath or something please?

My hubby: Of course we can darling. Is everything okay?

Me: I'll fill you in when I get home, but I just had to talk to Mr. Evans about how a student was behaving towards me and what they were saying to me. I'll tell you when I get home.

My hubby: Okay darling. Did talking to Mr. Evans help at all?

Me: Yeah. It's cool that he remembers what I was like when I was his student because he told me to try and not to overthink it all, which you know I do all the time.

My hubby: Yup, I do know that. Please thank Mr. Evans for me. If he asks why I'm thanking him, tell him that it's for helping you today and for helping you when you were his student.

Me: Aww honey that's so cute! I have to go but I'll talk to you later. I love you.

My hubby: Okay babe. I love you too.

I put my phone away and went back to Mr. Evans's office. He looked at me.

"So, I just texted my husband and asked him if we could just relax when I get home, and he said yes and asked if anything was wrong. I said that I would fill him in when I got home, and I told him that I talked to you and that you helped me. He wants me to thank you, not only for helping me today, but also for helping me when I was a student here. He's my best friend so obviously he's heard all about you." I said. Mr. Evans smiled.

"No need to thank me, it's part of my job." He said. I smiled and nodded and went back to my own office. I had a couple of appointments with students and then I went home, my stomach still in a knot. I pulled into mine and Shawn's driveway, went inside, and took off my heels.

"Hey there Mrs. Mendes." Shawn said as he walked over from where he was in the living room.

"Hi." I said and immediately started to cry when I hugged him. He rubbed my back.

"Shhh honey, it's okay, I'm right here. We can talk about what happened now, but only if you want to, okay?" Shawn asked. I nodded.

"Okay. I think that I want to get out of my work clothes and take my makeup off and then I'll talk about it." I said. Shawn nodded.

"Okay darling. I'll help you take off your makeup." Shawn said.

"Okay." I said. I immediately went into the bathroom that's connected to mine and Shawn's bedroom and Shawn picked me up and put me on the sink. I had been holding back the tears all day, so I was still crying as Shawn took my makeup off of me.

"It's okay baby, you're okay." Shawn said.

"No I'm not okay because what if I get fired?" I asked, overthinking per usual. Shawn pulled away the makeup wipe and I opened my eyes to look at him. He had a puzzled look on his face.

"Why would you get fired?" He asked. I sighed and told him everything that had happened with the student and also what Mr. Evans had said. His eyes widened.

"Like, I'm not an animal, so don't make a fucking noise to get my attention. Call me Mrs. Mendes, that's my name, and that will get my attention." I said. Shawn nodded.

"Honey, you did the right thing. If Principal Miller calls you down to her office, just explain to her what happened. Mr. Evans is right, he was being disrespectful and inappropriate to you. You're his counselor, he shouldn't be making comments about your looks." Shawn said. I nodded.

"Shawn what if I actually do get in trouble? What if the student spins a story that makes it look like I actually did something wrong? Shawn what if I get fired? What if -" I asked but Shawn cut me off with a kiss. I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my tummy, and I felt sparks shoot through me like fireworks. Shawn and I pulled away.

"Breathe honey, you're spiraling. Close your eyes so I can finish taking off your makeup, okay?" Shawn asked. I did as told and closed my eyes.

"Okay." I said.

"Honey, if he spins a story, then you can have Mr. Evans talk to Principal Miller because you went to him right away, right?" Shawn asked.

"Yeah." I said.

"I'm all done taking off your makeup so you can open your eyes. My love, you're not going to get fired, and you're not going to get in trouble. Everything will be okay." Shawn said as I opened my eyes. I nodded.

"Do you promise that everything will be okay?" I asked as I slowly stopped crying. He nodded.

"I promise you that everything will be okay." He said. I nodded.

"Shawn, if for some reason I do get fired, what do we do about bills?" I asked since I help to pay the bills for the house. Shawn chuckled a little.

"Oh honey, you know that I have enough money to cover that. You're not going to get fired babe." Shawn said. I nodded.

"Okay. I think that I'm just going to get changed now." I said.

"Okay." Shawn said and helped me off the counter. I got changed out of my white blazer, dark jeans, and brown shirt. I then got changed into something more comfortable and sat down on the bed. My phone rang, and it was the high school, so I answered it as Shawn sat down next to me on the bed.

"Hello?" I asked.

"Hi, may I speak with Mrs. Y/n Mendes please?" The person, who I could tell was my boss, asked.

"This is her." I said.

"Hi Y/n, it's Principal Miller. Would you mind coming into my office as soon as you come in tomorrow morning?" She asked. My stomach went into knots.

"Absolutely." I said.

"Okay, thank you so much." She said.

"You're welcome." I said.

"Bye." She said, and we hung up. I turned to Shawn.

"That was my boss. She wants me to go straight to her office tomorrow morning when I come in." I said.

"Okay baby, just explain what happened, and you'll be fine. Breathe honey." Shawn said. I took a few deep breaths and nodded.

"I don't know why I got dressed. Can we take a bath or something please?" I asked. Shawn smiled and nodded.

"Of course we can darling. Do you want me to get into the bath with you?" He asked and I nodded as I got undressed. Shawn got the water to the temperature that I liked, and then he got undressed. He stepped in and held his hand out for me to take. As our skin touched, I felt electricity spark through me yet I felt safe and warm at the same time. I stepped in and Shawn sat down in the tub first. He spread his legs a little and I sat in between them and leaned my back against his bare chest.

"Thank you for this Shawn." I said as I rested my head on his shoulder and closed my eyes. He kissed the side of my head as he wrapped his arms around my waist and I let my fingers rub his legs.

"You're welcome Y/n. Anything for my amazing wife." Shawn said and I smiled.

"I love being your wife." I said. Shawn kissed the side of my head again.

"Well I love being your husband." Shawn said. My smile widened.

"What should we talk about? I want to talk about something other than work to get my mind off of the knot in my stomach." I asked and said.

"Well, my darling wife, if you want to, we can make love after this, but we obviously don't have to if you don't want to. I know that making love can help you relax sometimes." Shawn said. I thought for a moment.

"I don't know. I feel tired. It's been a long day. I'm sorry." I said.

"It's okay baby. I understand." He said.

"Shawn?" I asked.

"Hmm?" He responded.

"Will you talk to me about our wedding day please?" I asked. Shawn kissed the side of my head and nodded.

"Of course I will honey." Shawn said. I smiled as he talked about our beautiful wedding day. He kissed the side of my head when he was done.

"Our wedding day was magical." I said.

"Yup, it really was. I love you Mrs. Mendes." Shawn said. My smile widened.

"I love you too Mr. Mendes." I said. We soon got out of the bath and cuddled. That night when we got into bed, after saying good night and I love you to each other, Shawn began to speak.

"I'll make you pancakes in the morning and help you pick out your outfit if you want me to. Everything will be okay darling." Shawn said and I nodded my head against his chest. The next morning when I woke up, Shawn wasn't in bed. I went downstairs and he was in the kitchen, making me some pancakes. I took a picture of him and posted it on Instagram with a few heart emojis. I then walked over to Shawn.

"Good morning handsome." I said as I leaned against the counter. Shawn smiled at me and kissed my forehead. The spot that he kissed was left feeling tingly, even after his lips were no longer there.

"Good morning gorgeous. Do you want to go sit on the couch and relax while I make the pancakes?" Shawn asked. I shook my head and stood behind him and wrapped my arms around his waist.

"No. I just want to be with you right now. I'm nervous." I said. I had emailed Mr. Evans yesterday, telling him that Principal Miller had called me and he emailed back saying that if he needed to, he would back me up, which I thanked him for.

"Everything will be okay baby girl. I promise." Shawn said and I nodded. We soon sat down to eat breakfast. After breakfast, we went upstairs and Shawn helped me pick out an outfit. Soon, it was time for me to leave for work. I sighed and Shawn gave me a kiss.

"Wish me luck." I said.

"Good luck even though you'll be fine. Text me afterwards." Shawn said. I nodded and then got in the car and drove to work. I knocked on Principal Miller's door. She looked up at me and waved me in.

"Hi Principal Miller. How are you?" I asked.

"I'm good Mrs. Mendes. How are you?" She asked. I thought about Shawn and smiled.

"I'm good, thank you." I said. Principal Miller nodded.

"Do you know why I called you in here today?" She asked.

"I have a feeling that it's about Chad." I said. She nodded.

"Yes. He said that you were rude to him yesterday and treated him poorly." She said. I told her what actually happened and she nodded as she listened.

"I even went to Mr. Evans afterwards and told him what happened because I was nervous about him reporting me to you. Mr. Evans reassured me that I was fine and then once we stepped out of his office, Chad asked 'What did you do Mrs. Mendes? Tattle on me?' so Mr. Evans told him that he needs to treat me with respect." I said. Principal Miller nodded and picked up her phone to make a phone call.

"Hi Mr. Evans it's Principal Miller. Would you mind coming down to my office please?" She asked. After a moment, she thanked him and then hung up. She then turned to me. "I apologize for this, but when a student reports something like this, we can't take it lightly." She said. I nodded.

"I understand." I said. Soon, there was a knock at the door.

"Come in!" Principal Miller said, and Mr. Evans walked in.

"Hi Principal Miller, hi Mrs. Mendes." Mr. Evans said.

"Hi." I said.

"Hi. Please take a seat Mr. Evans. So, can you explain to me what happened yesterday with Chad and Mrs. Mendes please?" Principal Miller asked as Mr. Evans took a seat. Mr. Evans gave the exact same story that I did, which I was grateful for.

"I believe that the way that Chad acted with Mrs. Mendes was inappropriate and disrespectful." Mr. Evans said and Principal Miller nodded and then looked at me.

"Here's the thing: Chad is saying that you were yelling and screaming at him and that everyone in the guidance offices could hear it." Principal Miller said.

"Principal Miller, I was in my office which isn't too far away from where Chad and Mrs. Mendes were, and I couldn't hear them at all. She definitely was not yelling. I've known Mrs. Mendes since she was a student here, and never have I ever heard her yell. I don't think that she has a yelling bone in her body." Mr. Evans said, and laughed a little at the last sentence. I was tempted to say that Shawn would disagree but I held back. Principal Miller nodded and thought for a moment.

"Okay. Thank you Mr. Evans. Mrs. Mendes, I apologize again, but we just have to be sure that each student is treated with respect." She said. I nodded.

"May I ask if he's going to get any consequences for lying to you about me yelling, and for how he treated me?" I asked.

"I'll talk to him and tell him that he can't do that." She said. I nodded and then heard Mr. Evans begin to talk.

"With all due respect Principal Miller, he literally eyed Mrs. Mendes up and down and made a comment about her looks, which is quite inappropriate, and he was rude and disrespectful to her." Mr. Evans said. Principal Miller thought for a moment and then nodded.

"Okay. He'll be given two weeks detention." She said and Mr. Evans and I nodded. We were then dismissed from her office and we walked back to guidance together.

"Thank you for that Mr. Evans." I said.

"No problem." He said. When I got into my office, I texted Shawn and told him a brief summary of what happened. He texted me back and said that he was glad that Mr. Evans had said something about the consequences and that he loved me. I'm very grateful for Shawn, Mr. Evans, and for the fact that I didn't get fired.
