151. Sarah Gets Jealous
I have three kids with my husband of nineteen years, Shawn Mendes, the singer and songwriter. Our oldest child is Rose Lucille Mendes, she's eighteen and about to graduate from high school. Our middle child is Jacob Alexander Scott Mendes, he's sixteen and he goes by the nickname Jake. Our youngest child is Sarah Grace Mendes, and she's fourteen. Shawn and I love our kids more than anything in this world. We were sitting at the dining room table when Shawn began to speak.
"So Rose, are you excited to be going to the University of Southern Maine in the fall?" Shawn asked. Rose smiled and nodded.
"Yup. This is off topic, but lately I've been watching videos on a certain YouTube channel. The channel is called Celebrity Snapchat Diaries, and I'm not kidding Daddy, it has all of your Instagram live streams." Rose said.
"Really?" Shawn asked with wide eyes. Rose nodded.
"Yup. Why do you think I just stayed in my room all day yesterday?" Rose asked with a laugh.
"Oh, you were watching them?" Shawn asked. Rose nodded.
"Yeah. I loved seeing the evolution of things. I especially loved seeing the live streams go from just you, to you and mom. Like, I watched your first live stream together and it was so cute. I had Sarah come in and watch some of the videos too. I loved the one where you and mom introduced me." Rose said. Shawn smiled at me.
"What live stream was your favorite?" Shawn asked. Rose thought for a moment.
"I loved the one where it was a few months after you and Mom had gotten married and you woke up without her so you said that you bet she's downstairs reading and she was. You guys were being so cute and cuddly with each other." Rose said. Shawn and I smiled at each other.
"Well I know your mother pretty well, and when I saw that her book wasn't next to her side of the bed, I knew that she was most likely reading, and I was right." Shawn said. I giggled and nodded.
"You can tell that you and Mom are soulmates." Rose said. I smiled at Shawn who gazed at me with a very loving look.
"Yup. She's the love of my life and my soulmate. Always and forever, right Mrs. Mendes?" Shawn asked. I perked up at the sound of my last name and nodded.
"Yup. Nineteen years of being Mrs. Mendes, and I still get butterflies whenever you call me that." I said. Shawn chuckled and then rubbed my cheek with his thumb.
"Well my love, you are Mrs. Mendes." Shawn said and I smiled at him. I heard Sarah sigh and Shawn and I looked at her.
"You okay Sarah?" I asked. She pushed her plate away.
"I don't want to talk about it." Sarah said.
"Okay... are you not hungry anymore? You barely ate." I asked and said.
"Well maybe if you and Daddy hadn't been gawking at each other I wouldn't have been so grossed out." Sarah snapped.
"Watch your tone young lady." Shawn said.
"Sarah, your father and I are like this with each other all of the time. Why are you suddenly upset about this?" I said and asked. She sighed again.
"I'm just sick of it." She said, not looking at us.
"Where is this coming from?" Shawn asked.
"I'm going to my room." Sarah said.
"Sarah Grace Mendes, sit back down. We're not done eating and if you want to leave the table, you need to ask to be excused." I said. She stared daggers at me, it was a look that she had never given me, her mother, before.
"I don't need to listen to you Mom." Sarah said.
"Sarah, sit down now." Shawn said. She looked at him for a moment before sitting down. "You are not to leave the table until we're all done eating, do you understand me? The way that you're acting is unacceptable."
"Fine." She said, her voice laced with an attitude.
"Excuse me?" Shawn asked.
"I understand." She said and crossed her arms.
"Thank you. Now please eat the food that your mother made." Shawn said as he went back to his food.
"Your food is always better Daddy. Why can't you cook something for me?" Sarah asked.
"Because your mother already made dinner which you should appreciate. I'm eating my own dinner, so I don't have the chance to get up and make you different food." Shawn said. Sarah looked at me.
"I don't like your food. I want something else." She said.
"Sarah, I'm not a restaurant. Either you eat what I made you and be grateful about it, or you don't eat at all." I said.
"Whatever, I'll just have a snack before bed." She said.
"Remember our no snacking after dinner rule?" I asked.
"Yeah and it's a stupid rule." Sarah said.
"Sarah Grace Mendes, what has gotten into you? Why are you acting like this?" I asked. She shook her head.
"I don't want to talk about it." She said.
"Is something going on at school?" Shawn asked, and I saw that his face had softened, and so had his tone.
"No." Sarah said. After dinner, Sarah stormed up to her room.
"I'll talk to her." Shawn said before he began to walk out of the dining room. I gently grabbed his wrist and he looked at me.
"Did I do something wrong to her? Why was she treating me like that?" I asked. Shawn pulled me in for a hug.
"You didn't do anything wrong. You did the right thing. This is a home, not a restaurant. I don't know why she was treating you like that, but I'm going to find out." Shawn said. I nodded and looked up at him.
"Thank you. Can I have a kiss please?" I asked. Shawn smiled and nodded before putting his lips on mine. I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my tummy, and I felt sparks shoot through my body like fireworks. Shawn and I pulled away and smiled at each other. Shawn then went upstairs to Sarah's room.
Shawn's point of view
I headed upstairs to my youngest child's room. Sarah was giving a lot of attitude at dinner tonight and that's unacceptable. I couldn't help but notice that a lot of the attitude was aimed towards my wife, Sarah's mother, Y/n Mendes. I knocked on Sarah's door.
"Mom, go away." She said.
"Sarah, it's me." I said. There was a pause and then she opened the door and let me in. She sat down on her bed.
"Am I in trouble?" She asked.
"Well I just want to know why you gave your mother and I, mostly your mother, so much attitude tonight at dinner. That's completely unacceptable. We're not a restaurant, so when your mother hands you food, that's what's for dinner. Why were you acting like that tonight?" I asked. She began to cry.
"You wouldn't understand Daddy." She said.
"Then help me understand. I'm your father and I want to help. Please just explain it to me." I requested. She sighed.
"You love Mom more than you love your kids." She said. I frowned.
"That's not true at all. I love you all equally." I said.
"Okay but you love Mom differently than you love Rose, Jake, and I." She said.
"Sweet pea, I kind of have to." I said. She gave me a funny look.
"What do you mean?" She asked.
"I love your mother in a romantic way. I don't love my kids in a romantic way, that would be weird and bad." I said. Sarah nodded.
"But like, you show Mom more attention." Sarah said. I shook my head.
"That's not true and you know it." I said. Sarah was still crying.
"I feel like you pay more attention to Rose and Mom than you do to Jake and I." She said and my heart broke.
"I'm sorry if it seems like that honey. Do you want to do something together tomorrow?" I asked. She perked up and nodded.
"Yeah. Can we go to the park with the mansion on it please?" She asked. I nodded.
"Yup. Now, can you do me a favor please?" I asked. She nodded.
"Sure." She said.
"Can you go apologize to your mother please?" I asked. She nodded and went downstairs to give Y/n a hug.
"I'm really sorry Mom. I just got jealous and I took it out on you. I'm sorry." Sarah said. Y/n nodded.
"Thank you for apologizing. There's plenty of your father to go around, he's a great guy, which you obviously know." Y/n said. Sarah nodded and then went upstairs. Y/n looked at me.
"She was jealous because of I love you differently than I love them, but I explained that I love you romantically, and I obviously don't love my kids that way." I said. Y/n nodded and hugged me.
"Thank you for talking to her." Y/n said. I kissed the top of her head.
"Of course darling. Come on, let's go to bed." I said. Y/n nodded and we went to bed. I'm so glad that I was able to make Sarah feel better.
