146. "We're Not On Speaking Terms."

A/n: Okay so I know that not everybody has had difficult times with their dad, but I have, and I got this idea so I decided to write it. Explicit language in this one. Anyways, please enjoy this imagine! Okay, without further ado, let's begin!

August sixteenth, 2019

I couldn't believe it. Just last night I was seeing my favorite singer, Shawn Mendes, in concert, and now I was on a date with him at a Dunkin Donuts in Boston.

"I actually saw you in concert last night." I said. Shawn's eyes widened.

"Oh really?" He asked. I nodded.

"Yup. You guys were great, but that doesn't surprise me." I said. Shawn smiled, and just his smile alone gave me butterflies. There was something about him that pulled me in. He intrigued me.

"So did you go by yourself or did you go with someone?" Shawn asked as he took a sip of the coffee drink that I had recommended he order. I suddenly looked down and lost my smile.

"I um, I went with my dad. It was a bit awkward actually." I said. I felt Shawn put his hand on mine so I would look up at him. As our skin made contact, I felt electricity spark through me, yet I felt safe and warm at the same time. His eyes looked comforting, and like he was genuinely curious and concerned.

"If you don't mind me asking, why was it awkward?" Shawn asked. I sighed.

"Well, him and I... we're not on speaking terms." I said. Shawn nodded.

"Oh. Sorry." Shawn said.

"It's okay. It's not your fault. He's just not a good dad or person really. My dad broke my heart way before any boy had the chance to." I said. Shawn nodded. We switched the subject, and after a bit longer, our date was over. We had another date the next day, and then that December, Shawn asked me to be his girlfriend and I said yes!

Shawn's point of view

Three years later

"I don't know. For as long as I've known her, she's never been really talking to her dad. I mean, at family get togethers they're nice to each other and they talk to each other if they have to, but that's really it." I said to my best friend, Brian Craigen.

"Well, she has a brother that she's close to, right?" Brian asked. I nodded.

"Yeah." I said.

"So ask her mom and her brother. You don't have to ask the dad. Shawn, there's no rule book that says who you absolutely must ask when you want to ask your girlfriend to marry you." Brian said and I nodded. The next time that I was home in Massachusetts, I secretly met with Y/n's mom and brother.

"Is everything okay? You seem nervous." Y/m/n, Y/n's mom, asked me. I sighed as we sat down.

"Well, I would like to ask Y/n to marry me. She's the love of my life, my best friend, my soul mate, my everything. I don't feel as though I should as Y/d/n because him and Y/n don't really talk. Would it be okay with you guys if I asked Y/n to marry me?" I asked. Thomas and Y/m/n nodded.

"Of course! Shawn we adore you and we know that Y/n loves you." Y/m/n said.

"She's definitely going to say yes." Thomas said and I nodded. A few months later, it had to wait a bit because of me being on tour, I asked Y/n to marry me and become my wife, and she said yes. After we got engaged and dropped Josiah Van Dien, my tour photographer who had captured the proposal on camera, off at his hotel, Y/n and I went over to the house that she grew up in. Her mom and her brother were sitting there.

"So what's up?" Y/m/n asked. Y/n held up her hand to show off the ring.

"We're engaged!" Y/n said. Everyone hugged us and congratulated us. We then sat down and Y/n sat on my lap. I wrapped my arms around her waist and held her close to me as she wrapped her arms around my shoulders. By now, I had heard the stories about her father and what he was like.

"So are you going to tell your father?" Y/m/n asked. I felt Y/n tense up, so I began to rub her legs and I kissed her cheek.

"I have him blocked on everything. He doesn't deserve to know that he's going to have an amazing son in law. He fucked up repeatedly and now he has to deal with the consequences." Y/n said.

"Would you mind if I called and told him so he doesn't find out through the internet or something?" Y/m/n asked. Y/n shrugged.

"Sure, go ahead. Just please don't do it until I'm not here. I don't want to hear his voice." Y/n said. Y/n asked her brother if he could walk her down the aisle and he said yes. We soon left. After a little bit, Y/n got a phone call from her mom. She answered it, they talked for a bit, and then Y/n came back in the room and sighed.

"What's up my love?" I asked as she leaned on me.

"You know how if you have a number blocked on your phone, and they leave a voicemail, it still shows up that you have a blocked voicemail?" She asked. I nodded.

"Yeah." I said.

"Well apparently my dad tried to call me and he left a voicemail. " Y/n said. I listened to it.

"Hi Y/n, um, your mother just called me to tell me the news. Congratulations to you and Shawn! I'm excited to walk you down the aisle." Her dad said. I gave her a funny look.

"Why does he think that he's going to be walking you down the aisle?" I asked. She shrugged.

"I don't know. Should I unblock him so I can call him and tell him that he won't be walking me down the aisle and that he's not invited to the wedding?" Y/n asked. I kissed her cheek.

"Whatever you want to do darling. I'll support you no matter what." I said. She nodded and I watched as she unblocked her dad and then called him.

"Y/n?" He asked.

"Hi." She said.

"Hey. Congratulations to you and Shawn." He said.

"Thank you. I heard your voicemail. Thomas will be walking me down the aisle, and you're not invited to the wedding." Y/n said. There was a pause.

"But I'm your father." He said.

"Well you should have thought about that before you fucked up so many times. The only reason why I called you was to say thank you and tell you that Thomas will be walking me down the aisle and you're not invited to the wedding." Y/n said and then hung up. She then cried in my arms after setting her phone down.

"Hey, pretty girl, look at me." I said. Y/n looked at me and my heart broke as I began to wipe her tears away. "Everything's going to be okay. You did the right thing." I said. She nodded.

"Can I have a kiss please? Your kisses always calm me down." Y/n asked and said. I smiled as I pulled her onto my lap.

"Of course you can have a kiss baby. You can have as many kisses as you want." I said. Y/n smiled and put her lips on mine. I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my stomach, I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, and I felt sparks shoot through my body like fireworks. I love Y/n, and I can't wait to marry her.

Your point of view

Two years later

I sat on the couch rubbing my three month pregnant belly. My husband, Shawn Mendes, and I recently found out that we're going to be having a little girl, causing us to be ecstatic. Shawn sat down on the couch with me.

"Hey darling?" He asked.

"Hm?" I asked as I looked at my beyond handsome husband.

"What do you think about having your dad in our daughter's life?" Shawn asked. I sat up a bit more.

"Shawn, you know how he was with Thomas and I growing up." I said.

"Yes, and maybe six years of not talking to his daughter, and finding out that his daughter is pregnant with his first granddaughter, will make him change." Shawn said.

"I doubt it." I said.

"Y/n, honey, just give him a chance. Please. I want our daughter to have two grandfather's. Do it for our little girl, okay?" Shawn asked. I sighed and nodded.

"Okay." I said.

"Do you want to call him and invite him over for dinner tonight?" Shawn asked.

"I really don't want to." I said. Shawn sighed.

"What's his phone number so I can call him?" Shawn asked. I had memorized my dad's phone number when I was little, so I said it and Shawn dialed it. Shawn left a voicemail for him. "Hi Y/d/n, it's Shawn Mendes. Um, Y/n and I would like to invite you over for dinner tonight. Please give me a call back at this number. Thanks. Bye." Shawn said and then hung up.

"Do you think that he'll do it? Change?" I asked. Shawn sat next to me and sighed.

"I don't know." Shawn said.

"I just want everything to be okay." I said as I leaned on him. Shawn kissed the top of my head but before he could respond, his phone rang, and I saw that it was my dad.

"Hello?" Shawn asked. He put my dad on speaker.

"Hi Shawn, it's Y/d/n. I got your voicemail. Is Y/n okay with me coming over for dinner?" My dad asked. I nodded as Shawn looked at me.

"Yes. She's nodding her head right now." Shawn said.

"Okay, great! What time should I be there by?" Dad asked.

"Maybe in a couple of hours?" Shawn asked.

"Okay, sounds good, see you then." Dad said, and they hung up. A couple of hours later, the doorbell rang.

"I'll get it." Shawn said. He had met my dad before at family get togethers, but my dad had never been to our house before. Shawn opened the door to reveal my dad. I stayed seated on the couch.

"Hi." Dad said as Shawn let him in.

"Hey, come on in. Y/n's in the living room." Shawn said. My dad smiled at me and I weakly smiled back.

"Hi dad." I said.

"Hi sweetie. How are you?" He asked as he sat down. I looked at Shawn and Shawn kissed the side of my head.

"Well, you should be thanking Shawn because he was the one that convinced me to let you come over. Dad, we have something to tell you." I said. My dad nodded.

"What is it?" He asked.

"We're pregnant with your first granddaughter." I said and I saw tears form in my dad's eyes but he held them back. I felt uncomfortable. My dad was never one to cry, so to see it was rare.

"Congratulations. Can I give you a hug?" Dad said. I nodded and stood up. He held me close to him for a few moments and then let go. We all sat back down.

"Dad, Shawn and I want you to be in our daughter's life, but you need to understand something: if you start acting anything like you did with Thomas and I, but with our daughter, you'll be out of her life so fast that you won't even have time to blink. So you better step up and shape up if you want to be back in my life, in Shawn's life, and in our daughter's life. Understand?" I asked. He nodded.

"I understand." He said. I nodded.

"Good. I'm serious dad. The second you start going back to your old ways, you'll be out of her life." I said. He nodded.

"Okay." He said.

"Promise me that you won't be the same way with our daughter, dad. You're still going to have to prove it, but promise me that you'll actually be in her life and you won't be absent." I requested. He nodded.

"I promise to be in her life and I won't be the same way as I was with you and Thomas, I promise." My dad said. I nodded.

"Okay. Thank you. I'm hungry." I said as I turned to Shawn.

"Well, my darling, I've made spaghetti. Ready to eat?" Shawn asked and I nodded. My dad and I then sat at the table. Since my dad had never been to our house before, I wasn't surprised when he saw across from me, where Shawn sits.

"That's where Shawn sits." I said.

"Oh. I'll just move down one. Shawn do you mind if I sit next to you?" My dad asked as Shawn brought over the delicious spaghetti that he made. Shawn shook his head.

"No that's fine." Shawn said, and then sat down.

"Thank you guys for inviting me over. Y/n, I'm sorry about the way that I was with you when you guys were growing up. I really am." Dad said. I held back tears and nodded.

"Thank you for apologizing." I said. He nodded. I began to eat.

"So, um, I saw photos from the wedding online. It looked beautiful." Dad said. Shawn and I nodded.

"Thank you." We said.

"I cried a bit when she walked down the aisle. I mean honestly, how does a being get more beautiful and gorgeous and stunning than Y/n?" Shawn said and I blushed as I smiled.

"Well how does a being get more handsome and good looking than Shawn?" I asked and Shawn laughed.

"I can't wait to hold our little girl. We're keeping the name a secret, right?" Shawn said and asked. I nodded.

"Yeah. You're going to be such a good daddy." I said to Shawn. I let my eyes flicker over to my dad for a moment before looking back at Shawn.

"Well you're going to be such a good momma. I hope that she looks just like you." Shawn said and I blushed.

"You like to make me blush." I said. Shawn chuckled and nodded.

"Yup. It's one of my favorite things to do with you. Number one would have to be just being in your presence. I swear, just your presence alone can lift up my spirit. Like, I'll be having a bad day but then you walk into the room and woah. Everything changes." Shawn said. I smiled.

"You're too good to me Shawn Mendes." I said before taking a bite of my food.

"Other way around babe. Honey, you literally deal with hate from my fans on a daily basis, you struggle with things, but yet you're still here and smiling. You're the strongest person that I know and there are times when it hits me all over again that I got to marry you. I swear to God, I'm the luckiest man alive, and that's all because of you my love." Shawn said and tears formed in my eyes.

"You're making me cry!" I said with a laugh.

"Happy tears or sad tears?" He asked.

"Happy tears, very happy tears. You make me feel so special and loved and like I'm a queen." I said. Shawn reached one of his hands out for mine and I smiled as our hands touched.

"Darling, you are so special, and you are so loved, and you are my queen. I love you." He said as he began to play with my wedding ring.

"I love you too." I said. We had a nice dinner and then sat down on the couch.

"Shawn, I'll help you put together the nursery if you want me to." My dad said. Shawn smiled and nodded as he massaged my back.

"Yeah, that would be great. Thomas said he would help, but the more hands we have, the better. I don't want Y/n to help because of the paint fumes and I don't want her getting on her hands and knees to look for parts on how to put a crib together. My dad is up in Canada, so I could really use your help." Shawn said. My dad nodded.

"I'll be there, I promise." He said. I stood up and went out to the deck. I soon heard the door open and then close.

"Dad, I don't want to talk." I said.

"It's me darling. What just happened?" Shawn asked as he put his hand on my back. I leaned against the railing of the deck.

"It's just another promise that he's going to break. I know him Shawn. He's never going to change. Why did I ever say yes to him coming over?" I asked as I put my head in my hands. Shawn gently pulled me closer to him.

"Babe, I'll make sure that he keeps this promise. I'm not going to let him wriggle out of it." Shawn said. I leaned my head on my husband's chest and nodded.

"Thank you. You're an amazing husband and an amazing man, did you know that?" I asked. Since my head was on his chest, I felt the vibrations of his laugh. He rubbed my back a little.

"Well Mrs. Mendes, you're an amazing wife and an amazing woman. Come on, let's go back inside." Shawn said. We walked back in while holding hands and saw that my dad was looking at photo from mine and Shawn's wedding that we had custom framed and hung up in the living room. It was a black and white picture from our first dance. My dad turned and looked at us.

"This is a beautiful photo." He said. We smiled.

"Thank you." We said.

"Do you guys, um, do you guys have a photo album from your wedding?" Dad asked.

"Yeah." I said.

"Would you mind if I looked at it?" Dad asked. Shawn got it out.

"Sure." Shawn said. My dad put it in his lap and opened it. I sat next to Shawn and we all looked at the pictures.

"Oh there's me dancing with Jimmy Fallon! I remember that! He had just randomly cut in from our dance and he was doing a funny dance with me." I said and Shawn kissed the side of my head.

"I love that picture." Shawn said as he pointed at a picture of him and I talking to Camila Cabello. My back was against Shawn's chest and he had his arms wrapped around my shoulders as he kissed the side of my head. I nodded and smiled. My dad got emotional when he saw the photos from Thomas and I dancing.

"I'm sorry Y/n. I'm so sorry for the mistakes that I've made. I want to be better, and I will be, I promise. I'm sorry." Dad said as he looked at me. I nodded.

"Dad, it's in the past. Let's stop living in the past and move forward with our lives." I said. He nodded and went back to looking at the pictures. When he finished looking at them, he smiled at me with tears in his eyes.

"You looked so beautiful honey. You always do. Thank you guys for inviting me over. Shawn, whenever you want to work on the nursery, just let me know." My dad said. Shawn and I gave him hugs and then he left. Shawn pulled me in for a gentle hug.

"I think that he likes me." Shawn said. I giggled.

"Who doesn't like you?" I asked. Shawn laughed and pulled away from the hug.

"He just whispered to me that I'm a good guy for taking care of you." Shawn said and I smiled.

"Well you are a good guy. You're an amazing guy. I should probably unblock him, shouldn't I?" I asked.

"That's up to you honey." Shawn said.

"I think that I will." I said and Shawn smiled at me.

"I'm proud of you darling. I love you." He said before giving me a kiss.

"Thank you. I love you too." I said. When mine and Shawn's daughter, Rose Lucille Mendes, was born, my dad became an amazing grandfather. I'm so grateful that Shawn got my dad and I talking again.
