11. Family Drama & The Nursery

A/n: Okay so this idea popped into my head. I know that not everyone has had issues with their father, but I have. For me, as a writer, when I get an idea, I have to write it or else it's just going to be stuck in my head. Anyways, please enjoy some family drama. Explicit language in this one! Okay, let's begin.

"Yeah, don't worry Shawn, I promise you that I'll help set up the nursery." My dad told my husband, Shawn Mendes. We've just told my parents and my brother that we're three months pregnant with their granddaughter and niece.

"And I promise that I'll help too." Thomas, my brother said. Shawn nodded.

"Thank you. I don't want Y/n helping because the paint fumes and all of the stuff that we'll be doing is probably bad for the baby." Shawn said and everyone nodded. Shawn and I soon left and got in the car.

"How much do you want to bet that my dad bails at the last minute and doesn't help with the nursery?" I asked when Shawn and I got in the car.

"Come on honey, don't worry. He'll help. He promised that he would." Shawn said. I sighed.

"Shawn you know the stories about my childhood with him and how he was with Thomas and I growing up. You know that he's made promises and then bailed and broke them." I said as I looked out the window while Shawn began to drive home. Shawn sighed.

"I know. But I think that he's learned from his mistakes and that he wants to help his granddaughter." Shawn said. I simply nodded, not knowing what else to say. Shawn then pulled over to the side of the road. I kept looking out the window.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"Look at me honey." Shawn said. I did, and I could see his concern for me in his eyes. "Everything will be okay. I promise. And you know me, I don't break promises, I keep them." Shawn said. I nodded and interlaced my fingers with his.

"Okay. Can we go home and cuddle please?" I asked. Shawn smiled and nodded and then got back to driving. We soon arrived at home and cuddled.

Two months later

As of right now, I'm currently five months pregnant with mine and my husband Shawn Mendes's baby girl. She's our first child, so we're very excited. Over the moon with joy, actually. Today is the day that Shawn, my dad, and my brother will be setting up the nursery. It needs to be painted pink today and then we'll bring all of the furniture in and set it up tomorrow. Well, I won't because Shawn won't let me help. My phone rang, it was my dad.

"Hey dad." I said.

"Hi honey. Listen, I'm really sorry, but I don't think that I can help Shawn with the nursery today." My dad said. Are. You. Fucking. Kidding. Me???

"What? Why not?" I asked.

"It's just really stressing me out and overwhelming me." My dad said. This angered me even more.

"Oh, it's stressing you out and overwhelming you?" I asked. My dad sighed.

"Yes." He said.

"Oh, I'm so sorry that you're so stressed out and overwhelmed about something that you can't even paint a fucking room. Need I remind you that you fucking promised my husband who is the father of your grandchild that you would help him?" I practically screamed over the phone. Shawn came running into the room.

"Y/n, I'm sorry -" My dad started.

"No, I don't want to hear it. I knew this would happen. I fucking knew that you would bail and not do this. But you know what? If you want to bail on something that has to do with your granddaughter before she's even born, then you don't have to see her when she's born. I'm not going to put my daughter through what you put Thomas and I through. So go ahead dad, break your promise to my husband. Fuck you." I said before Shawn took the phone from me.

"Y/d/n, what's going on?" Shawn asked. Shawn listened to my dad. "Listen, my dad lives all the way up in Canada, and I could really use your help for both today and tomorrow. We're painting the room today and then doing the furniture tomorrow. I can tell that Y/n is extremely upset right now, but I just really need your help." Shawn said. There was another pause before he spoke again. "All right, thank you. Bye." Shawn said before hanging up.

"I don't want to see him." I said. Shawn put his hands on my arms and rubbed.

"I know honey. Why don't you just stay in here while he's here at the house?" Shawn said and asked. I sighed and nodded before I started crying. Shawn guided me over to the bed and we sat down.

"I knew that he would do this. I knew it. If he starts acting anything like he did as a father to our daughter, he'll be out of her life so fast he won't even have time to blink." I said. Shawn nodded.

"I know honey. We have some time before Thomas and your dad get here. Do you want to cuddle?" Shawn asked. I nodded.

"Yes please." I said. Shawn then laid down a bit and I laid next to him and he rubbed my belly, which Shawn knows relaxes me. Soon, the doorbell rang and I groaned.

"I know honey. Just stay in here while he's here, okay?" Shawn asked. I nodded.

"Okay. I love you." I said. Shawn smiled at me.

"I love you too." Shawn said, and then he went downstairs. I could hear Shawn talking to my dad and to my brother. The three of them came upstairs and I thought that they would all go straight into the nursery, but there was a knock at the door. It better be my damn husband.

"Come in." I said, and my dad walked in.

"Y/n, we need to talk." He said. I sat up and he sat down on mine and Shawn's bed and sighed. He didn't say anything.

"You just said that we need to talk. I'm listening." I said.

"I'm sorry that I almost bailed on you guys. I just got stressed out and overwhelmed, and when that happens, it's like I just don't want to do anything." My dad said.

"If Shawn hadn't taken the phone from me, you wouldn't be here. If, after mine and Shawn's daughter is born, you start acting anything like you did with Thomas and I, you will be out of her life so fast that you won't even have time to blink. So, if you want to be in your granddaughter's life, step up and shape up. I don't want to see you while you're here, so please leave the room and go help your son and son-in-law." I said. My dad sighed, nodded, and left the room. I laid back and put my head in my hands as I cried quietly.

Shawn's point of view

"How do you think it's going in there?" Thomas, my brother-in-law asked me. I sighed and shrugged. He knew that my father-in-law, his dad, almost bailed on helping, just like Y/n had predicted he would.

"I don't know. She's saying that if he starts to act anything like he did with you guys, but with our daughter, he'll be out of her life so fast that he won't even have time to blink." I said. Thomas nodded and soon my father-in-law came in. We got to work painting the room, but soon I received a text from my wife.

Wifey: Can you come here please?

Me: Of course hun. I'll be right there.

I excused myself and went into mine and Y/n's bedroom. My heart broke when I saw her sitting there on the bed crying.

"What happened?" I asked. She told me everything that was said as she cried. I sighed.

"This stress isn't good for the baby." Y/n pointed out. I nodded and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead.

"I know. Why don't you either read or lay down while we paint the room? Does that sound good darling?" I asked. She nodded and pulled me in for a gentle and loving kiss. I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my stomach, I felt my heart race as if I just ran a marathon, and I felt sparks shoot through me like fireworks. We soon pulled away and I placed a kiss on her growing baby bump.

"If he tries to come back in here, tell him that I don't want to see him please." Y/n said and I nodded.

"Okay." I said.

"I love you Mr. Mendes." She said. I smiled at her.

"I love you too Mrs. Mendes." I said before leaving the room and shutting the door behind me. I then went back into the nursery where Thomas and Y/d/n were painting.

"How is she?" Y/d/n asked. I sighed.

"She was crying but I got her to calm down." I said.

"She was crying?" He asked with wide eyes. I nodded.

"Yeah." I said.

"I should go talk to her." He said. Oh no.

"No, she said to tell you that she doesn't want to see you." I said.

"Well she's my daughter and I need to talk to her." He said.

"Well she's my wife and she's extremely upset with you right now, and understandably so. Her being this upset isn't good for the baby. She said that she doesn't want to see you, so please respect your daughter, my wife's, wishes, and leave her alone." I said sternly. He sighed and nodded before he continued to paint. I then picked up a paint brush and started to help again.

"Thank you for treating my daughter so well." Y/d/n said after an awkward moment of silence. I nodded.

"You're welcome. She's my best friend and the love of my life. I would do anything for her and for our baby girl too." I said.

"Do you guys have a name picked out yet?" Thomas asked. I smiled and nodded.

"Yeah. But we're keeping it a secret until the baby is born. I will say this though, she's named after two relatives." I said.

"Relatives on which side of the family?" Y/d/n asked.

"Y/n's side. She picked out the name, but I love it, so I said yes." I said. I wanted to say the name so badly. It's such a beautiful name. Rose Lucille Mendes. I love it. Soon, we were done painting the room.

"I'll be here to help put the furniture together tomorrow, I promise." Y/d/n said as he stood at our front door. I had told him not to even say goodbye to Y/n, but Thomas said goodbye to his little sister.

"I'm going to hold you to that promise Y/d/n. I need your help." I said. He nodded and soon both him and Thomas left. I went upstairs and saw that Y/n was laying in bed, reading a book while rubbing her belly. She looked up at me and smiled.

"Hi. How did it go?" She asked as she bookmarked the page that she was on and then put the book down. I sat on the bed with her.

"Good. At one point your dad almost got upset with me because I wouldn't let him come and see you after I had said that you were crying, but then I told him that he should respect your wishes, so he didn't come in here." I said. Y/n nodded.

"Thank you. Is he coming back tomorrow?" She asked. I nodded.

"You're welcome my love. Yup. He promised me that he would and I told him that I'm going to hold him to that promise and that I need his help." I said. Y/n nodded again.

"I want to help tomorrow." She said. I shook my head and put my hand on her belly and rubbed.

"Nope. It's not good for the baby." I said. Y/n frowned, so I kissed her forehead, and she stopped frowning. She then puckered up her lips, so I placed a gentle and loving kiss on her lips. When we kiss, sometimes it's like I can send her messages, just like I did this time. I'm here honey, and I'm not going anywhere. When Y/n and I pulled away, she smiled at me and nodded as if I had actually said it out loud.

"I'm hungry." She said. I smiled.

"Do you want some pasta?" I asked. Her eyes lit up and she nodded her head violently, causing me to laugh.

"Yes please!" She said.

"Okay. I'll be right back with some ravioli." I said.

"No! I've been cooped up in this bedroom all day, I want to come downstairs with you and spend time with you." She said. I thought for a moment before nodding.

"Okay. Come on my love." I said. She smiled at me and we interlaced our fingers as we walked into the kitchen. I made some ravioli for my wife and for myself, and we sat down at the kitchen table.

"I love you." Y/n said when she was done eating.

"I love you too." I said as I smiled at her. The next day, my father-in-law and brother-in-law came over and helped me put together the furniture for the nursery. Y/n came in when we were done. She looked around and smiled. She then looked at me with tears in her eyes,

"It looks amazing. Shawn, this is where our little girl is going to sleep and grow up. Oh my gosh, I can't wait until our little girl is here." Y/n said as she placed one hand on her belly and wrapped her other arm around my waist. I put one arm around her shoulders and one hand on her belly.

"I know. I can't wait to meet our little girl." I said. I then kissed Y/n's temple and she looked up at me. I kissed her lips.

"Thanks dad and Thomas for helping Shawn with this." She said as she looked at them. They nodded.

"No problem, kiddo." Thomas said. Her dad nodded.

"Yeah, no problem. Listen, I'm sorry about yesterday -" He started.

"It's in the past and I don't want to talk about it." Y/n said. Her dad nodded. We said goodbye to them, and they left. Four months later, Rose Lucille Mendes was born, causing both my side and Y/n's side of the family all to be very happy. I love my wife and daughter so much.
