195. Terrible Twos
I sat in my two and a half year old daughter Rose's bedroom, playing with her. My husband, Shawn Mendes, is currently at a meeting.
"Mommy?" Rose asked. I looked at my daughter who is so beyond precious to me.
"Yes sweet pea?" I asked.
"When is the baby in your belly going to come out?" She asked. I smiled at her. I'm currently seven months pregnant with her baby brother.
"Just two more months and then your little brother will be here." I said. She frowned.
"I want him here now." She said.
"Well he can't come right now. He's not fully developed yet." I said.
"That's your fault Mumma." She said. My eyes widened.
"My fault? How is it my fault?" I asked.
"Because he's in your belly." She said.
"Yes, but he needs time to grow on his own while he's in there." I said. She frowned.
"I'm hungry." She said. I looked at the time.
"Well, it's too early for dinner. How about a snack?" I asked. She thought for a moment before shrugging.
"Sure." She said. I helped her down the stairs and into the kitchen.
"What do you want for a snack Rosie?" I asked.
"I don't know." She said with a shrug. I sighed and started to offer different things to her. She turned each and every single thing down.
"Well Rose, that's all we have for snacks. I guess you're going to have to wait until dinner to eat." I said. She crossed her arms over her chest and frowned at me.
"Well that's your fault Mumma!" She yelled. I put my hands on my hips.
"Rose Lucille Mendes, do not start yelling at me. I offered you every snack we had and you said no. If you don't want the snacks, you're just going to have to wait until dinner." I said. Rose then got up and went into the living room. I followed her and then sat down on the couch. I felt tired and I just wanted to rest.
"What's this Mommy?" Rose asked as she pointed at something. I looked at it and smiled.
"That's my college diploma. I got in when I graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology." I said. Rose reached up and then pushed it over, so the glass that was in the frame shattered and went everywhere. "ROSE!" I yelled as I ran over to her and scooped her up. She smiled at me as I set her down on the couch. "Sit here, and do not move. After I clean up the glass, you're going to go in time out for fifteen minutes to think about what you've done." I said before I went to pick up the glass.
"I did that on purpose Mommy." Rose said.
"I could tell. Why did you do that?" I said and asked.
"Because I'm mad at you." She said. I sighed as I finished picking up the glass. I guess that I would need to get a new frame for my diploma.
"Are you mad at me because you want to eat now?" I asked. She nodded.
"Yup." She said.
"Rose, I offered you every snack that we have, and you said no. So you not eating right now is not my fault when you're the one that said no. It's time for time out." I said as I picked her up and carried her upstairs. I sat her down in the chair.
"I hate you Mommy. Daddy is so much better than you. I love him more than I love you. I wish that he was home right now." Rose said. I ignored her hurtful comments and walked out of the room and downstairs. I put my head in my hands and cried. I didn't even hear the front door open, all of the sudden I just felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked up to see my husband looking at me with a concern etched across his face.
"What's wrong my love?" He asked. I patted the couch cushion next to me and he sat down. I then told him everything that had happened. He looked shocked.
"I don't understand why she's acting like this." I said as I cried.
"It's the terrible twos. Is the fifteen minutes up yet?" Shawn said and asked. I looked at the time and nodded.
"Yeah. But, before we go up, am I a bad mother?" I asked Shawn. His eyes widened and he shook his head violently.
"No of course not honey. You're the best mother ever." Shawn said.
"It doesn't feel like I am." I said. Shawn pulled me in for a gentle hug.
"Darling, she's just going through the terrible twos right now. You offered her all of the snacks that we have and you were playing with her earlier. You're an amazing mother." Shawn said. I slowly stopped crying and nodded my head against his chest.
"Thank you. Do you want to come upstairs to talk to her with me? She'll listen to you." I asked and said. Shawn nodded.
"Sure." He said, and we went upstairs.
"DADDY!" Rose yelled when she saw Shawn.
"Rose, we need to talk." Shawn said.
"What's wrong Daddy?" She asked.
"You treated your mother very poorly today, and she deserves an apology." Shawn said.
"But she wouldn't feed me." Rose said.
"Rose Lucille Mendes, that is not true, she offered you every single snack that we have, and you said no to everything. And then you made her college diploma fall which caused the glass to shatter everywhere. That wasn't very nice of you, in fact it wasn't nice at all." Shawn said. Rose looked at me.
"I'm sorry for what I said Mommy. I didn't mean it. And I'm sorry that I made the frame fall." Rose said. I nodded.
"Thank you for apologizing." I said.
"Can I give you a hug?" She asked. I smiled and nodded.
"Of course." I said. She then came over to me and I bent down to hug her. I looked over at Shawn, who was smiling.
"Will you play with me Mommy?" Rose asked.
"Mommy's had a long day so I'm very tired. Would you mind if we played tomorrow?" I asked.
"Okay." Rose said before turning to her father.
"Thank you for apologizing to your mom." Shawn said. She tried to crawl into his lap but she was struggling. Shawn chuckled before he picked her up and put her on his lap. "Better?"
"Yeah. Thank you Daddy." She said. Shawn smiled.
"You're welcome honey. Why don't we have dinner now so Mommy can go to bed afterwards?" Shawn asked as he looked up at me. I nodded.
"Okay." Rose said. We all went downstairs and had dinner.
"Are you excited to meet your baby brother in a couple of months Rosie?" I asked. She nodded.
"Yeah. But is he going to have cooties?" She asked, causing Shawn and I to laugh as we shook our heads.
"No, he's not going to have cooties." I said. Then, it was time for all of us to go to bed. I watched as Shawn put Rose in her bed and I bent down to kiss her forehead.
"I love you Mommy." She said. I smiled.
"I love you too." I said.
"Hey, what about me? Don't I get some love?" Shawn asked teasingly. Rose giggled.
"Of course Daddy! I love you." She said. He smiled at her before he leaned down to kiss her forehead.
"I love you too sweet pea. Sleep well." Shawn said before putting his hand on my back and guiding me out of the room as he turned off the light. Him and I got under the covers in our bed and because my belly is so big, I have to sleep with my back against his chest. Before I was pregnant, I would lay with my head on his chest, but now I can't. Shawn loves having my back against his chest though. He likes it because that way he can put his hand on my belly and feel it if the baby kicks. Shawn kissed my shoulder.
"Are you going to be home tomorrow?" I asked my amazing husband as I placed my hand over his. He kissed my shoulder again.
"Yup." He said. I smiled.
"Good. I missed my husband today." I said.
"Well your husband missed his wife today. Now, go to sleep my love. You've had a long day." Shawn said. I nodded.
"Good night Shawn. I love you." I said.
"Good night Y/n. I love you too." He said, and with that, we fell asleep. Two months later, Jacob Alexander Scott Mendes was born. I'm one happy wife and Mumma.
