My boyfriend of three years is the singer and songwriter, Shawn Mendes. He has to go on tour in a few weeks, so I'm not really looking forward to him leaving, but he's living his dream and that's all that matters... right? I had been cuddled up to Shawn on the couch when I became quiet as I thought about tour and Shawn being away. Shawn had one of his arms around my shoulders as I leaned on him and he gave my shoulder a gentle squeeze. I looked up at him and he looked really concerned.

"You okay my love?" Shawn asked. I faked a smile and nodded.

"Yeah. Why?" I asked.

"Well, first of all, I know that you're lying right now because your lips just twitched, and second of all, you got really quiet all of the sudden. What's wrong darling?" Shawn asked. I sighed and let myself snuggle my head further into Shawn's chest. I didn't want to talk about how I was feeling. I didn't want to sound selfish.

"I love you." I said.

"I love you too, now what's going on in that beautiful head of yours?" Shawn asked. I sighed and finally picked my head up to look at him.

"I don't want to say it because I don't want to sound selfish." I said. Shawn frowned.

"Baby, you're never selfish. What's going on honey?" Shawn asked as he kept his arm around me and started to rub my back.

"I just, I know that you love tour, I know that, but it gets so hard to be away from you. But I know that you're living your dream so that's all that matters, right?" I asked as I looked down. Shawn put his hand to my cheek and made me look up at him. He shook his head.

"Honey, I do love tour, but I love you more. I love you more than anything in this whole world. I know that it's hard to be away from each other, but we always make it work, right?" Shawn asked. I nodded.

"Yeah." I said. Shawn smiled a little.

"And baby, I may be living my dream career wise, but you're my dream life wise. You are all that matters in my life. Not me living my dream career wise. You. Okay?" Shawn asked. I nodded, feeling a bit better.

"Let's go out and do something." I said. Shawn smiled.

"What should we do?" He asked. I thought for a moment before shrugging.

"I don't know." I said. Shawn thought for a moment.

"Let's drive to Maine." Shawn said. My jaw dropped and my eyes widened.

"Really?" I asked. Shawn nodded.

"Yeah. Maybe you could even call your grandparents while we're on the way there and see if I can meet them?" Shawn asked. I smiled and nodded. Somehow, even though Shawn and I had been dating for three years, Shawn had never had the time to meet my grandparents. Shawn and I soon packed up the car and hit the road. While we were on the highway, I pulled out my phone and called my grandmother.

"Hi sweetie, how are you?" She asked.

"I'm good Meimei, how are you?" I asked.

"I'm good. What have you been up to?" She asked. Shawn kept one hand on my thigh as he drove.

"Well, I was wondering what you and Grandpa are doing today?" I asked.

"I have the day off from work and Grandpa isn't doing anything." She said.

"Perfect! I told my boyfriend Shawn that I was bored so we decided to randomly drive to Maine and we're on the highway right now." I said with a giggle.

"Oh yay! Oh I can't wait to meet Shawn! From what you've told me about him, he sounds wonderful." Meimei said. I looked over at Shawn, who was focused on the road, and I smiled.

"He really is wonderful Meimei. He's going on tour soon so we went to spend as much time together as possible." I said. Shawn must have heard what I said because he smiled.

"You know sweetie, I've seen pictures of your boyfriend, and let me tell you, he is so good looking." Meimei said, causing me to laugh.

"He is! He's the best looking man that I've ever laid eyes on. I'm going to pretend that he's not right next to me even though I'm staring at him so I can talk about him, but oh my gosh Meimei, just his smile alone is amazing. I swear, it could light up a room, maybe even the world. And oh my gosh he has a heart of gold. He's just so amazing in every way possible." I said as I continued to stare at Shawn. He glanced over at me and smiled. Meimei was laughing.

"Well, my dear, it sounds like you're in love." She said. My smile widened.

"I really am. I'm head over heels for him. It's crazy how much I love him. He's my best friend, my rock, my protector, my everything." I said.

"Awww, well I'll see you guys when you get here." Meimei said.

"Okay. I love you." I said.

"I love you too honey." She said, and we hung up.

"Sounds like you're pretty in love with me." Shawn teased. I blushed.

"Well of course I am! And I hope that you're pretty in love with me too." I said. Shawn squeezed my thigh.

"Of course I'm in love with you. I'm going to marry you someday, and that's a promise." Shawn said, causing me to smile.

"I can't wait baby." I said. We continued to drive to Maine and soon arrived at my grandparent's house after putting their address in the GPS. I knocked on the front door with Shawn standing behind me and when my grandmother opened the door she let out a squeal and came outside to hug me.

"Oh my gosh, it's been so long." She said.

"I know, it's been too long. Meimei, this is my boyfriend, Shawn Mendes. Shawn, this is Meimei." I said. Meimei gave Shawn a hug.

"Shawn, I have heard so much about you! Thank you for treating my granddaughter properly." She said. Shawn smiled.

"Of course. I love your granddaughter, and I would never do anything to hurt her." Shawn said, which made my grandmother smile.

"Well come on in. Albert, Y/n and Shawn are here." Meimei yelled when we went inside, and I was sad to see that Grandpa was in a wheelchair because his legs had gotten so bad.

"Hi Grandpa. How are you?" I asked as I bent down to give him a hug.

"Old. How are you?" He asked. I laughed.

"I'm good. This is my boyfriend, Shawn Mendes. Shawn, this is Grandpa Albert." I said. They shook hands.

"So do you two know what you're doing today?" Meimei asked.

"Hopefully just going to the beach and maybe go to Perkins Cove and Marginal Way." I said, mentioning a few of my favorite places in Maine. Meimei nodded.

"Actually, I was hoping that you guys could tell me some stories about my lovely girlfriend from when she was little." Shawn said. I groaned, causing everyone to laugh. We all sat down in the living room, me sitting next to Shawn of course, as my grandparents told stories.

"But to this day, neither Y/n, nor my other granddaughter, Elizabeth, remember playing together when they were little." Meimei said. We all nodded.

"I really don't. I wish that I did though." I said. Everyone nodded. Shawn then looked at me.

"Want to go to the beach?" He asked. I smiled and nodded.

"Yeah." I said. Shawn then looked Meimei.

"Would you guys like to come with us?" Shawn asked, causing my smile to widen.

"Well I can't go, but maybe my wife can." Grandpa said. Meimei nodded and we all headed to the beach. Meimei directed Shawn on how to get there. Once we started walking along the beach, Shawn pulled me close to him.

"Baby, I have to talk to Meimei. Why don't you walk ahead and then we'll catch up?" Shawn said and asked. I nodded.

"Okay." I said, and went ahead a little bit. I wonder what they had to talk about, but I soon felt a hand on my shoulder.

"Okay, I'm back." Shawn said. I looked to see where Meimei was. She was just a little bit behind us and she smiled.

"What was that about?" I asked Shawn. He kissed my cheek as he put his arm around my shoulders.

"Just wanted to ask her something." Shawn said. I nodded.

"Okay. This is nice." I said. Suddenly, Shawn stopped walking. "What are you doing?" I asked. He smiled at me and then went down on one knee. My hands went flying up to my mouth as happy tears formed in my eyes.

"Y/n Y/m/n Y/l/n, I have loved you from the moment that I met you, and that love is going to last forever. I know that I said that I would wait until tour was over to propose, but the moment just felt right, and I have the ring with me. Y/n, you are my best friend, my biggest fan, my teammate, my soulmate, my love, my everything. I want to grow old with you. I want to have kids and grandkids with you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I love you. So," Shawn said before he pulled out the most gorgeous ring that I had ever seen. "Will you make me the happiest man alive and marry me?"

"Yes, yes, a million times yes Shawn!" I said. Shawn put the ring on my finger and we stood up and kissed. I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my tummy, and I felt sparks shoot through my body. Shawn and I pulled away and smiled at each other.

"Congratulations guys!" Meimei said, Shawn's phone in her hand. I hugged her.

"Thank you! Oh my gosh Meimei I'm engaged - we are engaged!" I said. Shawn and Meimei hugged as they laughed.

"Yup. And I just got a whole bunch of pictures of it." Meimei said.

"Really?" I asked. She smiled and nodded. Shawn wrapped his arms around me and I faced him while smiling.

"Are you happy baby girl?" Shawn asked. I nodded.

"Yes. I'm very happy right now. This is the most beautiful ring that I've ever seen and I get to spend the rest of my life with my best friend!" I said. Shawn chuckled and pulled me in for a hug.

"I love you princess." Shawn said. I smiled up at him.

"I love you too. And thank you for taking pictures Meimei." I said to my grandmother. She smiled and had tears in her eyes.

"You're welcome. I'm so happy for you guys. I still remember you coming up to me and saying 'I'm seven now!'" She said. I laughed and smiled.

"Do you guys want to walk along the beach?" Shawn asked.

"Wait! Let's just take a few more pictures." Meimei said. Shawn and I nodded and posed. We then walked along the beach.

"I know that I said that I was going to wait until after tour to propose, but the moment just felt right." Shawn said as he walked on one side of me with his arm around my shoulders and Meimei was on the other side of me. I nodded.

"I know, and it was perfect baby. We'll just hold off on the wedding planning until tour is over. Until then, we'll just savor being engaged." I said with a smile. Shawn nodded and kissed the side of my head. We stayed to watch the sunset, and Meimei took a picture of us watching it on Shawn's phone. We soon went back to their house, told Grandpa that we got engaged - he congratulated us - and said goodbye to them and left. I felt sad to leave but happy to be engaged.

"We should probably call our families and tell them that we're engaged." Shawn said. I nodded and pulled out my phone to call my mom, but then stopped myself.

"Meimei and Grandpa have been sworn to secrecy about the engagement and by the time that we get home, it's going to be nighttime. Why don't we tell our families tomorrow?" I asked. Shawn nodded and then interlaced our fingers. His touch electrified me yet I felt safe and warm at the same time.

"Okay baby girl. I love you." Shawn said with a smile before he brought my hand to his lips to place a gentle kiss there.

"I love you too." I said. We went home and the next day we told our families. They were over the moon with joy for us. Next, we texted and called all of our friends to tell them, and they were happy too. The following week, Shawn and I announced it over social media. He posted the picture of him down on one knee with me covering my mouth as I cried. I read the caption.

"Last week @yourusername and I took a spontaneous trip up to Maine and I got to meet her grandparents. Oh yeah, and I came back an engaged man. I love you so much baby girl, and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you." He wrote. I smiled at him and liked the picture. I then posted the picture where Shawn and I were both looking at the camera and smiling while you could see the ring because my hand was on Shawn's chest and his arms were wrapped around me.

"I got engaged to this amazing hunk of a man last week after a spontaneous trip to Maine to visit my grandparents. Shawn, I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you. I love you so much honey. Also, thank you to my amazing grandmother for taking the pictures of Shawn and I! We love you!" I wrote. Shawn smiled at my post and liked it. He then pulled me onto his lap.

"I love you honey." Shawn said as I ran my fingers through his hair.

"I love you too. I can't believe that I get to marry my best friend." I said. Shawn chuckled.

"Hey don't forget that I get to marry my best friend too!" Shawn said, causing me to laugh. I then saw that a lot of the comments on Shawn's post were positive, causing me to be very happy. Shawn and I soon went to bed and fell asleep. I'm so lucky to be engaged to such an amazing man that I love so much and who loves me just as much.
