186. How His Parents See You Guys

Manny Mendes's point of view

It was August sixteenth, 2019 when my phone rang. My son, Shawn Mendes, who is currently on tour right now, was calling me. I immediately answered.

"Hi Shawn." I said.

"Dad, I just met the most beautiful girl in the world and I'm pretty sure that she's the one that I'm going to marry someday." Shawn said.

"Wow. What city are you in right now?" I asked.

"Boston. We met at a Dunkin Donuts. It's some type of coffee and donut shop." Shawn said.

"Did you get her name?" I asked.

"Yup. Her name is Y/n Y/l/n and we even already had our first date. She suggested something for me to order and then after I ordered it, I sat down with her and we talked for two hours." Shawn said. He then began to tell me about her.

"She sounds amazing." I said when he was done talking.

"She really is. Andrew said that he's never seen me like this before." Shawn said. I smiled.

"Did you get her number?" I asked.

"Yup, and we're going to some park in Boston tomorrow to hang out again. She said that not many people go to the park, so we should be fine privacy wise." Shawn said. Him and I continued to talk for a little bit longer before hanging up. I told my wife Karen about the conversation.

"It sounds like our son is in love." She said with a smile, and I nodded. Not too long after they met, Y/n and Shawn started to date, and that December, he brought her up home to Pickering so Karen, Aaliyah and I could meet her.

Karen Mendes's point of view

"Mum! Dad! Y/n and I are here!" Shawn yelled. I rushed over to greet my son and Manny followed close behind.

"Hello there darling. And you must be Y/n. Oh you're so pretty!" I said to her. She blushed.

"Thank you. You have a lovely home Mr. and Mrs. Mendes." She said.

"Oh please, call us Karen and Manny." Manny said. I nodded. Shawn then brought Y/n in to meet Aaliyah, and Aaliyah and Y/n seemed to hit it off right away. Shawn smiled at them as he watched them talk. Soon, it was time for dinner and we all sat down to eat and talk.

"So, Y/n, tell us about yourself." I requested. Her face suddenly turned red. Shawn put his arm around her shoulders and gave her shoulders a gentle squeeze. She smiled at him.

"She's just a little shy." Shawn said. We all nodded and then Y/n began to tell us about herself. As soon as dinner was over, I pulled Shawn aside.

"She seems like an absolutely lovely girl." I said. Shawn looked over to where Y/n was sitting on the couch and smiled.

"Isn't she? She's the most gorgeous girl in the world and she has an amazing personality." Shawn said.

"Well, you go back to her. I just wanted to say that." I said. Shawn nodded and I watched as Y/n's whole face lit up when she saw Shawn walking towards her. I smiled. I have a good feeling about the two of them.

Two years later Shawn came over to the house with Y/n. We all sat down at the dining room table. Shawn and Y/n seemed slightly nervous but I couldn't figure out why.

"Is everything okay?" I finally asked them. They nodded.

"Yeah, we just, um, wanted to talk to you guys about something." Shawn said. Manny, Aaliyah and I all nodded.

"What is it?" I asked. Shawn cleared his throat and Y/n looked at him. I smiled when I saw the love in her eyes.

"Well, Y/n and I want to move in together." Shawn said. We all cheered.

"That's great! So Y/n, would you move into Shawn's condo?" I asked. Y/n and Shawn looked at each other. Shawn put his arm around Y/n's shoulders just like he had done the first time that he brought her home to us.

"Well, that's the thing. I don't want to disrupt her schooling or her getting her dream job. So, I'm going to be moving to Boston and we're going to buy a house together there." Shawn said. They both looked at us. I was floored. I never thought that my son would leave Canada.

"You're moving out of the country?" Aaliyah asked and I saw the tears form in her eyes. My heart broke.

"Yes, but I promise that I'll still call and text and Facetime and visit as often as I can." Shawn promised. Aaliyah stood up and looked at Y/n.

"I hate you for taking my brother away from me!" Aaliyah yelled at her. All of our jaws dropped as we then watched her storm out of the room and upstairs to her bedroom. Tears formed in Y/n's eyes.

"I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry." Y/n said. She then stood up and stepped outside of the house.

"Wait, baby!" Shawn yelled but Y/n was already headed out the door. Shawn looked at us and then put his head in his hands.

"Listen Shawn, you're doing the right thing by moving there. You guys want to live together, right?" I asked. He nodded his head almost violently.

"Yes, definitely." Shawn said.

"Well it's good that you're moving there because, like you said, you don't want to disrupt her schooling or her getting the job of her dreams. Aaliyah will get adjusted to it. Now go comfort Y/n." I said. Shawn nodded and stepped outside. He left the door open and I watched as she leaned on him when he put his arm around her and they talked. They soon came back inside and Y/n went upstairs.

"She's going to talk to Aaliyah." Shawn said. Manny and I nodded. Soon, Y/n and Aaliyah came back downstairs smiling and laughing. Shawn smiled at the sight.

Soon, we all helped Y/n and Shawn move into their beautiful house in Boston. When everything was put together, Y/n took a look around. Shawn wrapped his arms around her from behind and she jumped for a moment since she hadn't been expecting this.

"Shhh baby, it's just me." Shawn said before kissing her cheek and I saw Y/n relax and lean into his touch. She smiled as she looked around their living room where there were lots of pictures of family members, Y/n and Shawn with friends, but mostly there were pictures of just Y/n and Shawn, all around.

"I like how we decorated it." Y/n said and Shawn nodded. That night, Manny, Aaliyah and I flew back to Pickering. It felt good knowing that Shawn was so happy while living with the girl of his dreams.

Two years later my cell phone rang, it was Shawn.

"Hi darling, how are you?" I asked.

"I'm good, how are you Mum?" He asked.

"Good. What's up?" I asked.

"Is Dad nearby?" He asked. I grabbed Manny and then put Shawn on speaker.

"You're on speaker and I have your father with me now." I said.

"I have a question for you guys and please answer it honestly." Shawn requested. Manny and I looked at each other.

"Okay. What is it?" I asked.

"How do you guys feel about Y/n?" Shawn asked. This surprised me a bit. Hadn't we always expressed how much we adored her?

"Oh she's lovely Shawn and she's absolutely perfect for you. I see the way that you look at her, and I see the way that she looks at you." I said.

"Why? How does she look at me?" Shawn asked. I laughed a little.

"She looks at you like you're a god that put the stars in the sky and like you're the reason that all things function properly. I can tell that she loves you deeply." I said.

"I agree son." Manny said.

"Okay, good. Um, how would you guys feel if I asked her to marry me?" Shawn asked. I let out a squeal.

"Oh that would be amazing! Then she would officially be part of the Mendes family." I said.

"She's a great girl Shawn, and she's perfect for you. I knew that she was the right one for you the moment that you told me about her." Manny said.

"Okay. So I have both of your blessings to propose to her?" Shawn asked.

"Yup." Manny and I said.

"Thank you. Now I just need to talk to her parents to get their blessing, get a ring, and propose. I hope that she says yes." Shawn said.

"Honey, she will definitely say yes! She loves you Shawn!" I said.

"Okay. I'll keep you guys updated." Shawn said.

"Okay. We love you sweetie." I said.

"I love you guys too." Shawn said, and we hung up. A week later, Shawn and Y/n Facetimed Manny, Aaliyah and I. I had a feeling that he had proposed. Shawn and Y/n were both smiling.

"Hi guys. To what do we owe to pleasure?" I asked. Shawn looked at Y/n and nodded. Y/n then lifted up her hand to show us her beautiful engagement ring. I screamed. "MY SON IS ENGAGED! Congratulations!" I yelled, and Y/n and Shawn thanked me. Manny and Aaliyah congratulated them too. Shawn then pulled Y/n close to him and kissed her cheek. She smiled at him before turning her head and kissing him on the lips.

"Ewww, I don't want to see my brother kissing." Aaliyah said, causing us to laugh.

"Well be prepared because you're definitely going to be seeing it on our wedding day." Shawn said with a smile. Y/n blushed. We soon said goodbye and hung up. A few months later my husband Manny walked into the room smiling.

"What's up with you?" I asked.

"Shawn just called me crying." Manny said. I stopped what I was doing.

"So you're smiling because your son was crying?" I asked.

"He was crying happy tears. Y/n asked if she could take his last name and he's just over the moon with joy. When they get married, she's going to be a Mendes." Manny said. I smiled and felt so happy for my son.

On May twenty third of the following year, I watched as my son cried happy tears as he watched Y/n walk down the aisle. Shawn and Y/n said their vows, kissed, and officially became husband and wife. I saw them at the reception and gave them both a hug as I cried.

"Thank you for being there when I picked out my dress." Y/n said to me as we hugged.

"You're welcome. You're officially part of the family now. I'm so happy for you guys." I said. Shawn and his newly wedded wife smiled at each other and then thanked me. Ed Sheeran got up onstage and performed his own song, Thinking Out Loud, for Y/n and Shawn to dance to for their first dance. I looked on proudly as they swayed and danced. Y/n would smile and giggle as Shawn whispered something in her ear and he would laugh and smile when she whispered something back. Throughout the reception, I kept looking over at them and watched as they talked to each other and laughed.

A little bit more than a year after they had gotten married, Shawn and Y/n Facetimed us once again.

"How are you guys?" Manny asked.

"We're good. We have something to tell you." Shawn said with a smile.

"What is it?" Aaliyah asked.

"We're three months pregnant!" Shawn said. We all cried tears of joy, and six months later, my first grandchild Rose Lucille Mendes was born. Two years later, my second grandchild, Jacob Alexander Scott Mendes was born, and then two years later, my third grandchild, Sarah Grace Mendes was born. I'm so glad that my son found Y/n. She truly is the girl of his dreams and his soulmate.
