172. The Paparazzi Find You, Rose and Shawn
My husband, the singer and songwriter Shawn Mendes, is currently in Los Angeles to do some interviews. He wanted me to come with him so we also brought along our one and a half year old daughter, Rose Lucille Mendes. Shawn had a break in between interviews so him, Rose, and I all went out to a park that was near his hotel so Rose could play. Shawn had told his security guard, Jake, that we would be fine and Jake reluctantly agreed.
"I just want time with my family. Just the three of us." Shawn said to me in the car. I nodded as I held one of his hands in my lap and squeezed.
"I know baby. I want that too." I said. I'll be honest, it made a little nervous to go somewhere so public without security. I mean, what if the paparazzi or fans find us? But you know what? As long as Rose and I are with Shawn, we're safe. We soon got to the park and Shawn parked the car.
"Rosie girl, we're here." Shawn said.
"Yay!" Rose said as she clapped. Shawn and I laughed and he got out of the car so he could help her out of her seat.
"Don't forget to hold my hand Rose." Shawn said. Rose nodded.
"Okay Daddy." Rose said. She held onto Shawn's hand and we walked over to the playground. Shawn put her on the swing and began to push her. I sat down at a bench across from the swing and smiled at my two favorite people. Rose laughed and smiled, causing Shawn and I to smile. When she was done on the swing, Rose wanted to play on the slide, over and over and over. Shawn sat down with me, put his arm around my shoulders, and we watched her.
"We made one good looking kid honey." Shawn said. I smiled and nodded as I leaned on him. He wrapped his arm around me tighter.
"We did. I love the fact that she has her Daddy's eyes and hair and nose." I said as I looked up at him. Shawn smiled down at me briefly since my head was on his chest and he kissed my forehead before looking over at Rose.
"Yeah. But everything else is you my love." Shawn said. I smiled and then looked over at our daughter who had started to walk over to us. She stood in front of Shawn, lifted her arms up, and began to speak.
"Uppie." She requested.
"What's the magic word?" Shawn asked with a slightly stern look on his face. We want to make sure that Rose grows up to be a polite girl.
"Uppie please." She said. Shawn nodded and smiled. I sat up and Shawn picked Rose up and put her on his lap.
"There you go. Are you having fun?" Shawn said and asked. Rose nodded.
"Yeah." She said.
"What do you like the most?" I asked. Rose thought for a moment.
"I like the swing the most. It makes me think of when Daddy throws me up in the air." Rose said. I smiled and Shawn smirked as he stood up and started throwing Rose up in the air and then catching her.
"You mean like this Rosie?" Shawn asked as Rose laughed and squealed. All of the sudden, I heard a click of a camera. Oh no. We had been having so much fun, too.
"Shawn, I just heard the click of a camera." I said. Shawn immediately stopped throwing Rose up in the air and he sat back down on the bench with her on his lap.
"Daddy do it again." Rose said, but Shawn was looking around for the paparazzi that was taking the pictures. He soon spotted the person.
"They're over there near the street. They're not being too subtle." Shawn said. I looked and nodded.
"Nope, they're not." I said. The paparazzi then started to walk towards us.
"Rose put your head in my neck okay?" Shawn asked.
"Why Daddy?" She asked.
"Because I don't want this person taking pictures of you. And don't speak, even if you're spoken to. Let's go back to the hotel." Shawn said. I nodded and grabbed our stuff but the paparazzi was close to us with another guy with a camera next to him.
"Hey Shawn, how are you guys?" One of the guys asked. We ignored him as we started to get up and walk to the car, but more paparazzi joined in, making it slightly hard for us to get to the car.
"Shawn how's your daughter?" Another one asked. Rose picked her head up and looked around and began to cry.
"Put your head back down Rose. It's okay, you're okay. Guys, you're scaring my daughter, back up please." Shawn said to Rose and then to the paparazzi around us. They didn't really listen but we finally got to the car and Shawn got Rose in her seat first and then him and I got in the car. The paparazzi surrounded the front of the car. "I'm going to have to honk." He said. I turned around to Rose who was still crying.
"Rosie, Daddy has to make a loud noise with the car to make these people go away, okay?" I asked. She nodded.
"Okay." She said while crying. Shawn honked and some of the paparazzi moved away, and luckily it was enough that Shawn was able to move the car and drive back to the hotel. Rose was still crying, so Shawn began to talk to her to try and calm her down.
"Rosie, how are you feeling?" He asked.
"Scared." She said.
"Why are you scared honey? Did the men with the cameras scare you?" Shawn asked.
"Yeah. There was a lot of them all around us and I got scared that they were going to take me away from you and Mommy." Rose said. Shawn's jaw dropped and my heart broke.
"Listen to me Rosie girl, are you listening?" Shawn asked.
"Yes Daddy." She said.
"No one, and I mean no one is ever going to take you away from Mommy and I. Okay?" Shawn asked. That seemed to calm Rose down a little bit.
"Okay. I'm tired." She said.
"Well, how about this: when we get back to the hotel, you can take a nap. Does that sound good honey?" Shawn asked. I could see Rose nodding when I turned around to look at her.
"Yeah." She said. We soon arrived at the hotel and Rose laid down in the bed and fell asleep almost immediately. There was a knock on the door which surprisingly didn't wake up Rose. Shawn opened it and saw his security guard Jake.
"Hey. Rose is sleeping so we have to talk softly." Shawn said. Jake nodded.
"It's all over TMZ. You guys never should have gone out without me." Jake said and I could tell that he was frustrated.
"Jake, I can take care of my own family, and I think that I handled it pretty well." Shawn said. Jake sighed and then looked at me.
"What do you think Y/n? Do you think that he handled it properly?" Jake asked. I was torn on answering. I didn't want to get in the middle but I felt like I had to defend my husband. I nodded my head.
"Yes. He immediately told Rose to put her head in his neck and not to talk to anyone. When we got in the car, he honked the horn to make some of the paparazzi go away, and it made some of them move, enough for us to leave." I said. Jake sighed and shook his head before he looked at Shawn.
"Did you seriously tell the paparazzi that they were scaring Rose?" Jake asked. Shawn nodded.
"Yes, because they were." Shawn said. Jake looked frustrated as he crossed his arms.
"Shawn, you telling them that is going to feed into them and egg them on. You talking to them at all is going to feed into them and egg them on." Jake said. Shawn threw his arms in the air. Now it was his turn to get frustrated.
"They were scaring my one and a half year old daughter, what the hell do you expect me to do? When we got in the car Rose said that she was scared that they were going to take her away from Y/n and I." Shawn asked and said. Jake rubbed his face.
"Okay. Fine. But the next time that you guys go out, I'm going with you. I'll just stay a little bit away from you guys." Jake said. Shawn nodded and Jake left. As soon as the door was shut, Shawn walked over to me and wrapped his arms around my waist. I wrapped my arms around his neck loosely and he leaned his forehead against mine.
"I just want Rose to be protected at all costs. I never want her to get hurt or be afraid. I know that that's unrealistic but still, I wish that it was realistic and that it could happen." Shawn said.
"I know honey. I want that too, but you're right, we have to be realistic. But, personally, I think that you handled the situation that happened today in a great way. I'm proud of you honey." I said with a smile. Shawn smiled back.
"Thank you honey." Shawn said. He then ducked down and put his lips on mine. I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my tummy, I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon, and I felt sparks shoot through my whole body like fireworks.
"Ewww." Rose said. Shawn and I pulled away, our faces extremely red since we were embarrassed, and looked at our daughter who had caught her parents kissing.
"What are you saying ew for Rosie?" Shawn asked as he got on the bed and crawled over to her.
"You and Mommy were kissing. Mommy, weren't you worried that Daddy was going to give you cooties?" Rose said and asked. Shawn and I laughed. I shook my head no.
"No, of course not. Are you still tired?" I asked. She nodded as her eyes drooped. Shawn got a text.
"Well I have to go to an interview, but I'll see you guys later okay?" Shawn asked. We nodded and Shawn gave me a quick kiss before he quickly got changed and then left.
"Do you want to watch Daddy's interview?" I asked Rose. She thought for a moment before shaking her head.
"No. I'm tired. Can I nap please?" She asked. I nodded and got into the bed with her so we could nap together.
"Of course. I love you Rose." I said.
"I love you too Mumma." She said, and with that, we fell asleep. I'm so grateful for how protective Shawn gets. He's such an amazing father.
