17. Family Vacation
A/n: So I was trying to figure out where Shawn and the fam should go on a vacation and then I thought of my most favorite place in the world: Ogunquit, Maine! I didn't go into a lot of detail because I don't know a lot about some of the places there but I do know about others. Also, I took the above picture! BRB while I cry until I'm back there. Okay, let's begin!
I really want to go on a family road trip. Of course it would be me, Shawn, our daughter Rose, who's 8, our son Jake, who's 6, and our other daughter, Sarah, who's 4. I have it all planned out in my head. I'll talk to my grandparents because they'll probably let us stay with them, then I'll talk to Shawn, we'll pack up the kids, and drive to Ogunquit, Maine. I know the lay of the land up there, so I know exactly where we can go. I decided to bring all of this up to Shawn when we're in bed tonight.
"Alright Sarah, it's time for bed." Shawn said to our youngest child.
"But Daddy I want to spend more time with you and mommy." Sarah said.
"I know you do, but we can spend more time together tomorrow, okay?" Shawn asked. Sarah nodded and we took the kids up to bed and said goodnight to them. I had already talked to my grandparents and they said that it was okay for us to stay with them. Shawn and I got into bed. We always talk a little bit before we fall asleep.
"Shawn?" I asked.
"Yes my love?" Shawn asked while rubbing my cheek with his thumb.
"What do you think about going on a family vacation to Ogunquit, Maine?" I asked.
"I don't know honey, hotels can get a little pricey." Shawn said. Even though we have the money for it, Shawn doesn't want to go around spending all of his money.
"Well, I already talked to my grandparents and they said that we can stay with them." I said. Shawn stopped rubbing my cheek.
"Wait, you already talked to them before talking to me?" Shawn asked. Oh no.
"Well I needed to find out if we could stay with them or if we had to go to a hotel. I wasn't trying to go around you Shawn." I said. Shawn started to rub my face again as he nodded.
"Okay. Sorry I got upset. I think it's a great idea. When should we go?" Shawn said and asked. I peppered his face with kisses, causing him to laugh.
"Thank you honey! We can go whenever we want Grandma said." I said.
"Okay. We'll go next week and spend a few days there. That sound good my love?" Shawn asked. I nodded.
"That sounds perfect." I said. The next day Shawn and I sat the kids down to tell them that we are going on a vacation.
"Did we do something wong?" Rose asked. Her Boston accent is so strong that she can't pronounce her R's. It's cute and funny.
"No, no, no sweetie, you did nothing wrong. Do you want to sit on Daddy's lap?" Shawn asked. She nodded and moved so her cute little bum was on Shawn's lap. He put his arms around her.
"Alright kids, guess what we're doing next week." I requested.
"EATING!" Jake yelled. Shawn and I stifled a laugh as we shook our heads.
"Sarah? Rose? Do you guys have a guess?" Shawn asked.
"I was gonna guess the same thing." Sarah said.
"Sitting on daddy's lap?" Rose guessed. She's more of a daddy's girl than Sarah is, but Sarah is still a big daddy's girl. Jake is a momma's boy.
"We're going on a vacation!" Shawn said. The kids cheered.
"We're going to visit my grandparents up in Maine." I said. The kids cheered some more. They had never met their great-grandparents before so I knew that they would be excited, but Sarah and Rose are a little shy. Jake, not so much. He's a social butterfly.
The next week Shawn and I, along with the kids and our luggage drove up to my grandparents house. We soon arrived there to find my grandparents waiting outside for us. I felt sad when I saw that Grandpa had a cane. I jumped out of the car and ran to them. I hadn't seen them in such a long time.
"Grandma! Grandpa! I don't know who to hug first." I said. Grandma stuck her arms out and we hugged, and then I hugged Grandpa. The kids came running towards us. "Careful with Grandpa's legs kids." I said. They nodded. Shawn walked over.
"You must be Shawn." My grandpa said as he stuck his hand out for Shawn to shake and they shook hands.
"I am, nice to meet you both." Shawn said as he hugged my grandmother. I smiled. Grandma crouched down.
"You must be Rose." She said. Rose nodded. "And you must be Jake." She said.
"I am!" He said. Grandma laughed. Sarah was hiding behind Shawn's legs.
"Hi Sarah, I'm Grandma. Can I have a hug please?" She asked.
"Go on Sarah, hug Grandma." Shawn said, encouraging her. That made Sarah feel better and she hugged Grandma.
"Thank you very much." Grandma said with a smile.
"So where do you think we should go today?" I asked my grandparents.
"I think you should go to Marginal Way and Perkins Cove but if you do, I can't go. But that's okay, I'll have to live with ya for a few days." Grandpa teased.
"Grandpa!" I said while swatting at him gently. I looked at Shawn. "We probably can't walk much because of the kids, but we can try. Does that sound good?" I asked Shawn. He nodded.
"That sounds perfect my love." Shawn said. I smiled and I could see Grandma smiling out of the corner of my eye. We soon unpacked and took the kids to Marginal Way, Grandpa waving as we left. Shawn drove as Grandma and I gave him directions. We found a parking spot and got out.
"Alright kids, I want you on your best behavior, and I want you to hold onto our hands. Okay?" I said and asked. They nodded. Shawn took Sarah's hand, I took Jake's, and Grandma took Rose's. I could hear Grandma and Rose giggling. She's always been great with kids. We only did part of the walk since it's over a mile and that's too much for the kids. We then walked to Perkins Cove which is right along the water and has a bunch of shops and a restaurant. We decided to stop and get something to eat. Afterwards, we walked along and got the kids some souvenirs.
"Wait, is this a jewelry store?" Shawn asked while pointing to a store. I nodded.
"Yup. But everything in there is really expensive." I said, already knowing where Shawn's mind was going.
"Grandma, would you mind watching the kids while Y/n and I go inside?" Shawn asked.
"Sure." Grandma said with a smile. She held Jake and Rose's hand, Sarah standing in front of her, as Shawn took my hand gently and we went inside the store.
"What in here do you like babe?" Shawn asked.
"Shawn you are not buying me something." I said.
"Oh but I am. Come on babe, please?" Shawn pleaded, giving me puppy dog eyes. He knows I can't resist the puppy dog eyes.
"Fine." I said. Shawn silently cheered. I walked around the store and found a necklace with part of a seashell in it. "Shawn I like this one." I said. I went to look at the price tag but Shawn swatted at my hand.
"Stay here." Shawn said, and took it up to the counter so he could pay. We walked outside and I showed it to Grandma.
"Oh Y/n it's beautiful." She said. I smiled and nodded.
"Shawn will you put it on me please?" I asked. Shawn nodded and put it on me.
"There you go my love." Shawn said as he kissed my cheek from behind.
"Alright, where to next?" I asked.
"The kids said they want to go back to my place and rest for tomorrow." Grandma said. Shawn and I nodded.
"Okay." I said. As we walked to the car, Grandma pulled me aside.
"He's a keeper." She said as we watched Shawn pick up Sarah, spin her around, and then carry her to the car. I smiled and nodded again.
"He really is Grandma, he really is." I said, and then we continued walking to the car. Shawn and I got one guest bedroom while the kids got another. Shawn and I cuddled up to each other that night.
"So what was that about with Grandma pulling you aside?" Shawn asked while my head rested on his chest.
"She told me that you're a keeper." I said. Shawn smiled.
"And do you agree with that?" Shawn asked.
"I do." I said. Shawn kissed my forehead and we fell asleep. The next day Grandma and Grandpa took the kids and Shawn and I went to the Ogunquit Playhouse, which is a theater.
"What do you want to see?" Shawn asked.
"It says online that 'An American in Paris' is playing. It says for the description 'Hoping to start a new life, World War II veteran Jerry Mulligan chooses newly-liberated Paris as the place to make a name for himself as a painter. But Jerry's life becomes complicated when he meets Lise, a young Parisian shop girl with her own secret - and realizes he is not her only suitor. Featuring the music of George and Ira Gershwin, this lavish new musical is guaranteed to sweep you off your feet—and into the arms of a story you'll never forget.' Does that sound good?" I asked Shawn. He nodded.
"That sounds great my love." Shawn said before he gently kissed my lips. I felt butterflies erupt and fly around in my stomach, I felt sparks shootout like fireworks throughout my body, and I felt my heart race as if I had just run a marathon. We pulled away, gasping for air after our passionate kiss.
"I love you Shawn." I said while playing with my new necklace.
"I love you too Y/n." Shawn said as he ran his fingers through my hair. After the show Shawn and I went back to the house. The next couple of days were great with Grandma and Grandpa and we were sad to leave.
"I love you guys." I said to them as we hugged.
"We love you too sweetie." Grandpa said. Shawn and I drove back home. I was silent the almost the whole ride back. When we got back, we laid the kids down for a nap before Shawn and I got into bed and were about to take a nap too.
"What's wrong sweetheart?" Shawn asked as he rubbed my side. I started to cry a little.
"I rarely see my grandparents and I hate leaving them. I miss them already." I said. Shawn wiped away my tears.
"I know love, I miss them too. But we'll see them again soon. I promise, okay?" Shawn said and asked. I calmed down and nodded.
"Okay. I love you Shawn." I said.
"I love you too Y/n." Shawn said. With that, we fell asleep. I love my kids, my husband, and my grandparents, so much, and I can't wait to see my grandparents again.
