147. Everybody Meets Rose
I laid in bed while feeling exhausted. Just a week ago, I gave birth to mine and my husband Shawn Mendes's first baby, Rose Lucille Mendes. We spent two days in the hospital after she was born, but now we're home. As I laid in bed, I heard Rose cry again, and started to get up and out of bed. I soon felt a hand gently grab my wrist and pull me back down.
"Don't worry honey, I got her." Shawn said. I nodded and put my head back down on the pillow. About a minute later, I heard footsteps, signaling to me that Shawn was coming back in the room. "Hey honey?"
"Yeah?" I asked.
"I think that she needs to be fed." Shawn said. I sat up and lifted up my shirt as I took Rose. She latched onto me pretty quickly and I fed her. Soon, she was done.
"There you go Rose, all done." I said.
"Sorry to wake you." Shawn said.
"It's okay. I'm her mommy, I'm supposed to feed her. Why don't you go put her back in her crib and then we can cuddle, okay?" I asked.
"Okay." Shawn said, and left the room. He soon came back, but without Rose this time. As soon as he got under the covers, he gently pulled me close to him.
"I love you Shawn." I slurred since I was so tired. Shawn chuckled before kissing my forehead.
"I love you too." Shawn said, and him and I soon fell back asleep. After a few more hours, Shawn and I were once again woken up to the sound of Rose crying, but this time, it was morning. Shawn and I both got up and went to Rose.
"What's wrong my sweetie?" I asked Rose as I picked her up. I sniffed her butt and made a face, causing Shawn to laugh.
"Does she need a diaper change?" Shawn asked. I nodded.
"Yes." I said.
"Here let me do it." Shawn said.
"No, why don't you go make some of your delicious pancakes and I'll change her?" I offered. Shawn thought for a moment before kissing my cheek and nodding.
"Okay." Shawn said as he left the room. I changed her diaper and then carried her downstairs so I could put her in her high chair. Shawn smiled when he saw me walk into the room. After I put Rose in her high chair, I walked up so I was behind Shawn, and wrapped my arms around his shirtless torso. I placed a gentle kiss on his gorgeous back before resting my head there.
"Can Rose just stay this little forever?" I asked, causing Shawn to laugh.
"I wish honey. She's so cute and adorable and beautiful." Shawn said. I smiled because I could hear the pride in his voice.
"She's going to be a real heartbreaker when she gets older." I said. I could feel Shawn tense up.
"She's not allowed to date until she's thirty, maybe even forty." Shawn said, causing me to giggle. "I'm serious."
"Shawn, come on, be realistic." I said. Shawn finished up the first pancake and turned around to face me.
"No. She's my little Rosie girl. I don't want her growing up." Shawn said while looking over at his daughter.
"I know, but she's going to, whether we like it or not." I said. Shawn nodded and then went back to the pancakes. He was soon finished and I got some baby food and fed Rose as Shawn ate his pancakes. Once Rose was done eating, I ate. Shawn stayed at the table the whole time.
"Did you know that you two are my pride and joys?" Shawn asked as I picked Rose up out of her high chair. I smiled.
"We are?" I asked. Shawn nodded and walked over to Rose and I.
"Yup. Can I hold her please?" Shawn said and asked. I nodded and gently handed Rose over to Shawn.
"Here you go." I said. Shawn looked down at his daughter in his arms and smiled. He slowly walked over to the couch and sat down with her. I sat down next to him. He started to talk to Rose.
"Hi sweet pea. Oh my Rosie girl, I don't think that you know how loved you are. Not just by your mommy and I, but by your grandparents and your aunts and your uncles. Plus, Mommy's best friend, Grace, is your godmother, and I know that you guys haven't met yet because she's away for work, but she said that she already loves you very much. And I know that you haven't met your godfather, Brian, either, but he loves you a lot too. I hope that one day you realize how loved you are my sweet, precious, little girl." Shawn said, and I saw tears form in his eyes as he continued to smile at Rose.
"Why do you look like you're growing to cry Shawn?" I asked while suddenly feeling concerned.
"I just have so much love for her that it's practically overwhelming. I know that she seems to like to wake us up in the middle of the night, but she's worth it. I love her so much." Shawn said, speaking to me but not taking his eyes off of his daughter. I rubbed his back, which finally got him to look at me.
"I love her a lot too, and yeah it can get a bit overwhelming, but she's worth it." I said. Shawn nodded and we watched as Rose yawned.
"Oh, big yawn sweet pea. Let's put you down for a nap." Shawn said as he slowly stood up with Rose in his arms. He laid her down in her crib and then we went back downstairs and sat on the couch. My phone dinged. It was a text from my best friend and Rose's godmother, Grace.
Grace: Hi! I'm finally home from my work trip and whenever is good for you, I would love to meet my goddaughter.
I looked up at Shawn and showed him the text.
"Tell her to come on over now and then we'll hang out until Rose wakes up." Shawn said. I nodded.
Me: Rose is sleeping right now but come on over! I haven't seen you in foreverrrr.
Grace: Lol, I'm on my way.
"She's on her way." I said to Shawn. He nodded. Soon, someone rang the doorbell. I got up and opened the door and saw my best friend standing in front of me.
"Hi!" She said as she came into the house and gave me a hug.
"Hi! How was your trip?" I asked as we walked into the living room. Grace gave Shawn a hug and we all sat down.
"It was great. I just feel so bad that I was away from my best friend when she was giving birth." Grace said. I reached out for her hand and squeezed it gently.
"It's okay! You're here now, and that's all that matters." I said. Grace smiled at me.
"So what's it like to be parents now guys?" Grace asked both Shawn and I. We smiled at each other before looking back at her.
"It's tiring but Rose is worth it." Shawn said. I nodded.
"Yup. Sometimes, Shawn and I will look at her and just kind of stare because we're in such awe of her. I can't believe we made her." I said. Grace smiled, and then we heard Rose cry.
"I got her." Shawn said as he got up and went upstairs. I looked at Grace.
"Are you ready to meet your goddaughter?" I asked. She smiled and nodded.
"Yes!" She said, causing me to laugh. Shawn soon came back downstairs with Rose in his arms.
"Rose, this is your godmother. You can call her Aunt Grace." Shawn said. Grace stood up and looked at Rose.
"Oh my gosh she's beautiful. Can I hold her please?" Grace asked nervously. Shawn and I nodded.
"Here you go." Shawn said as he gently handed his precious daughter to Grace. Grace smiled at Rose as she slowly sat down.
"Hi there Rose. I'm your Aunt Grace. You're so beautiful, oh my gosh. You know Rose, you're very lucky to have the parents that you have. I've known your Mommy since she was seventeen. You're so small. Oh my gosh Y/n she has your eyes." Grace said. I laughed.
"I know. But everything else is Shawn." I pointed out. Grace nodded and it was soon time for her to leave. She made sure to place a gentle kiss on Rose's forehead before leaving and giving Shawn and I hugs goodbye.
"Hey baby?" Shawn asked me as we sat on the couch. He was the one that was now holding Rose.
"Yes handsome?" I asked. Shawn smiled.
"Do you think that I could have the band, Andrew, Teddy, and Geoff come over tomorrow? I really want them to meet her." Shawn asked and said. I chewed on my bottom lip for a moment while I thought.
"Sure." I said. Shawn kissed my cheek. The next day, Shawn and I gave Rose a bath and then dressed her up in a shirt that said "You Make Me Smile" and she looked adorable, per usual. Soon, the doorbell rang and Shawn answered it. I was sitting on the couch with Rose in my arms.
"Hey guys." Shawn said as the band, Andrew, Teddy, and Geoff came in.
"Hey." They all said.
"Just try to keep the volume down a little bit and please don't get too rowdy. We don't want Rose to end up crying." Shawn said. The boys all nodded before coming into the living room. Shawn sat down next to me and all the boys just stared at Rose for a few moments.
"Isn't she beautiful?" I asked, finally breaking the silence. They all nodded.
"Yeah. You guys look tired." Geoff pointed out as everyone sat down. Shawn and I nodded.
"Well when you have a baby repeatedly waking you up in the middle of the night, you get a bit tired. Can I hold her please?" Shawn asked me. I smiled and nodded as I handed Rose to him.
"Wow." Andrew said. Everyone looked at him.
"What?" Shawn asked.
"I just never thought that I would see you be so comfortable with holding a baby." Andrew said while chuckling. Shawn smiled at Rose.
"I was really nervous to hold her at first, but then my wife reassured me that I wouldn't drop her." Shawn said with a small chuckle. I nodded.
"Yup. And look, you haven't dropped her, and I know that you're not going to." I said. Shawn kissed my cheek. I looked at the boys. "He's already saying that she won't be dating until she's at least thirty, maybe forty." I said, causing the boys to laugh.
"You know that she has to grow up eventually, right Shawn?" Mike, Shawn's drummer asked.
"Oh hush. She's going to stay this small forever." Shawn said. I rolled my eyes.
"So have you written any songs about her yet?" Teddy asked. Shawn smiled and nodded, not taking his eyes off of his daughter.
"Yeah. Her and her mommy are my two biggest inspirations." Shawn said. I kissed his cheek, causing his smile to widen. Shawn then looked up at the boys. "Can you guys believe it? I'm a dad. I'm a father, and I have a daughter. A beautiful one too." Shawn said, beaming with pride.
"It's so weird to see you like this - holding your own baby I mean - because I've known you since you were fifteen. And now look at you - married and a father." Andrew said. Shawn chuckled.
"It may be too early to ask this, but do you guys think that you'll have more kids?" Zubin asked.
"We definitely want one or two more, but I just pushed one baby out of my who-ha, I'm not pushing another one out for a couple more years." I said, causing everyone to laugh.
"Who-ha?" Geoff asked with a laugh.
"Yeah, you know, my lady parts." I said, and I knew that my face was turning red. Everyone laughed. Rose started to cry.
"Shhhh honey, you're okay. Do you need a nap?" Shawn asked Rose as he stood up and brought her upstairs.
"He seems to be loving fatherhood." Dave said. I smiled and nodded.
"He does. Yesterday he had tears in his eyes because he was so overwhelmed by his love for her." I said. The boys awwe'd. Shawn soon came back downstairs without Rose in his arms. All of us talked for a while before the boys left. Once the door was shut, Shawn walked back over to the couch, where I was, and pulled me into his lap.
"I love you Mrs. Mendes." Shawn said with a smile. I smiled back.
"I love you too Mr. Mendes." I said. Shawn's smile widened. We had a nice and relaxing rest of the day. I'm so glad that we could introduce Rose to some of our closest friends.
