Chapter 54: Six Pounds, Nine Ounces
Cameron's P.O.V.
"You all ready?" I ask Sierra.
"Yes. Let's go." she says. "And by the way there may or may not be some liquid in your back seat." She makes a disgusted look as she looks at her damp sweatpants. Shawn runs up behind me.
"Your mom's gonna drive her car, you want me to ride with her or in the back with Sierra?" I look at him and then the back of my car. "Ride with us." I smile. He pecks a small kiss on my lips.
"Let's go get our baby." he says smiling. He runs around the back of the car to the opposite side. I open the drivers door and get inside. Upon opening the door I hear Sierra's screams.
"Ahhh." she screams.
"Are you ok?" I ask. Just a second ago, she was completely calm.
"Ahhh!" she screams again. "Get me to the hospital!"
"Sierra it's gonna be ok, let's get your breathing under control. Come on; in through your nose out through your mouth." Shawn says to her. I meet his eyes in the rear view mirror. He stares back, smiling at me. I'm so glad he is able to calm Sierra down.
"We've got about 10 more minutes." I say to the two of them.
"I'm gonna call Nash. We told him he could be there when the baby was born."
"Oh yah, I almost forgot." I tell him. It's been a few weeks since I've last talked to Nash. Shawn and I have been spending every minute we could with each other. I've been holding off on the sex though, because I know this icing curiosity is killing him.
"Hey Nash." I look back into the mirror to see Shawn holding the phone in between his ear and shoulder. I think he's holding Sierra's hand with his hand. "It's happening!" He listens for a few seconds. "Yes it's finally happening! We're heading to the hospital right now. Ok. I'll see you there." He hangs up the phone. After a few more minutes of driving we finally arrive at the hospital.
"Let's go." I say. I help Sierra out of the car, supporting her while she walks into the hospital.
"I'm going into labor!" she screams. Some nurses rush over and immediately put her on a bed. I grab Shawn's hand and follow Sierra's bed with his hand in mine. We go to walk into the room.
"Who's the father? Only the father can be back with her right now."
"One of us." I say to her. She looks down at our joined hands. "She's our surrogate mother." I add.
"Oh." She rolls her eyes. I'm getting really sick and tired of homophobic people. However, I don't have time to deal with her right now.
"Can we go back now?" I ask.
"Yes." she says turning around and walking away. What a bitch. We walk into the room, instantly hearing Sierra's screams.
"This hurts so much." she screams. After a few seconds she calms down. "These contractions are killing me." she says. The doctor comes in to assess her.
"She's still got a few inches more and then she'll be ready to have this baby. It'll probably be an hour or two." he says after examining her. He leaves the room. After he walks out, my mother rushes in.
"Hey guys." she says smiling.
"Mom." Sierra says. "You did this twice?"
"Yes sweety." she laughs. "It's not as bad as you think."
"I don't know, it feels pretty bad." Sierra says.
"You're about to become a grandma." I say smiling, and wrapping my arm around my mom.
"And you're about to watch your sister give birth." she says mockingly. Shawn starts laughing.
"Oh shut up Shawn." I say sarcastically.
"Cameron just before this, I want you to know that everything doesn't usually look the way it's gonna look when I give birth to your baby." Sierra laughs.
"You're really gonna see why you're gay." Shawn says, grabbing ahold of my hand. We walk over and sit down, my mom following us.
"Nash is gonna be here soon." I say to her.
"When?" she asks. I go to respond when he rushes into the room.
"Have I missed it?" he asks smiling.
"No Nash." Sierra says laughing. "It's gonna be an hour or two the doctor said.
"Good. I can't wait to see him." Nash says, walking over to us.
"Him?" she asks.
"Well I think it's gonna be a girl." Sierra says confidently.
"Let's take bets." Nash says jokingly. "I got 20 on it being a boy."
"I match your bet and raise it 30 on being a girl." Sierra says confidently.
"Can we please stop taking bets over my baby." Shawn says. I can't tell if he's irritated or kidding.
"What do you think it's gonna be?" Nash asks him.
"I don't care if it's a boy or a girl." Shawn pushes up from his chair. "I'll be back in a few minutes." he says walking out of the room. I stand up to follow.
"I didn't do anything did I?" Nash asks worried.
"I don't know what's up with him." I say, a worried look on my face. "I'm gonna go find him. Call me if anything changes."
"Ok." my mom says. I walk out of the room. Did he go left or right? I'm gonna try left first. I walk down the hallway and am greeted by another turn left or right. I look left and see the hallway just ends with rooms. I look right and see the same. Ugh, he must have turned right after leaving the room. I back track all the way and walk forward past our room looking for him. I take another turn right, followed by a turn left. I see him standing in front of vending machines. He hits it with his fist frustratedly. I walk up beside him.
"Are you ok Shawn?" I ask him.
"I just wanna be alone right now Cameron." This is the first time in a very long time that he's made such a request.
"Babe what's wrong?" I ask, putting my arm on his.
"Nothing. But this stupid vending machine won't take my dollar." he yells. The machine pushes his dollar back out and he kicks the machine.
"Shawn, calm down." I say. I walk in front of him, taking the dollar. I smooth it out on the corner of the machine and slide it into the money taker. It accepts the dollar. I turn around to Shawn and he looks away like an angry little kid. "There. You just had to be easy with it." I say. "What do you want now?" I ask him.
"I wanted M&Ms." He walks up beside me and types in the number 13, the number the M&Ms are in. He reaches down to get them out of the slot, but I beat him to them.
"You can have these when you tell me what's going on with you." I say. I don't know what's up with him. He reaches for them. I pull my hand back and smile at him. "Come on, just tell me."
"Just give me my candy Cameron." he says. I can't tell if he's mad, or trying to hold back a smile. I grab his wrist.
"Just tell me what's wrong Shawn." I stare into his eyes.
"It's nothing." he says, looking down. I slide the M&Ms into my pocket and place my hands on both sides of his face, pulling him up to look at me.
"Shawn, you've always been able to tell me everything. Why can't you tell me this?"
"Because I..... ugh..... I...." he turns around, walking in circles. "I just this whole pregnancy I feel like I've had no bond with that baby. And it makes me think, what if it doesn't like me. What if me and that baby don't get along, and it lives it's whole life not wanting me." I grab his wrist and set him down at the bench across from the vending machines.
"Why would you think the baby isn't going to like you?" I ask.
"You want me to be honest?" he ask.
"Of course Shawn. I'm not gonna get mad over you being honest with me."
"It's just....... this whole pregnancy in the pit of my stomach I've felt that this baby is yours. And honestly I don't care if it is or isn't, but when it's older are we going to tell it who the father is? At first I didn't want to know at all which one of us was the father to this baby, but don't you think it's gonna wanna know one day? And is it gonna favor one of us when it finds out? I'm just getting frustrated over it."
"Shawn if this baby truly wants to know who it's paternal father is when it's older then we can find out. I think we should still get the paternity test, and have my mom be the only one that knows."
"But aren't you curious? Don't think it's always gonna be in the back of your mind if it's actually yours or not?"
"Shawn that baby is going to be actually mine regardless of it is genetically related to me. And you should feel the same way. He's not gonna care which one of us is the paternal father."
"We don't know if it's a he or she yet." Shawn says, fake frowning and laying his head on my shoulder.
"Seriously though Shawn. If you wanna know then you can find out. You and my mom can be the only ones to know."
"Wait if I look at the results you wouldn't want to know with me?"
"Honestly Shawn, no. Like I said, it doesn't matter which one of us is the paternal father of this child. Because we're both going to be it's dad. It's going to love us equally."
"Wow." Shawn says. "I'm sorry for what I said. You're right. It's not gonna matter which one of us is the father."
"You still wanna know don't you?" I ask him smiling.
"Yes." he says looking down.
"Well that's ok Shawn. It doesn't matter."
"You sure you won't care?"
"Yes Shawn; I promise. I don't care if you look at the results or don't. It's not going to change anything for me."
"Sorry I got so pissy with you."
"It's fine. Just always remember when we talk stuff out like this we always fix our problems." He wraps his arms around me. We sit in silence for a few seconds. "Can you believe we're getting ready to be parents?" I ask him.
"Honestly I don't know. I still feel like we're kids ourselves." he says honestly.
"I know. It's so strange to think that we're literally gonna be shaping another human being into a person. Every single little thing we do is gonna change them." I realize that being a parent might seem strange for Shawn, showing as to how his parents have treated him.
"We're going to love them no matter who or what they want to be." he says. I know he's holding back tears.
"Are you ok?" I ask.
"Yes. I'm not gonna cry." he says standing up. "I'm not gonna cry." he says more to himself. I stand up following him. His back is turned towards me. I slowly turn him around into a hug.
"Listen Shawn. You're not going to be anything like your parents. You have way to much freaking love in your heart to be the kind of heartless freaks your parents were." I feel him tighten his grip on our hug.
"Thank you babe." he says in my ear. He's actually not crying; he's managed to keep it in. I feel my phone vibrate. I pull back from the hug and pull out my phone.
"It's my mom." I say confused. I answer it.
"Sweety this baby is coming right now." Shawn heard my mom through the phone. I end the call and he grabs my hand. We both start running towards the hospital room.
"We're here." I say out of breath in the doorway. Shawn and I make our way to Sierra's side. Her feet are propped up and I catch a full view of everything she has. Oh God am I scarred for life.
"We're gonna be out in the hallway." My mom says, giving us both hugs and walking out with Nash behind her.
"By the way bro I love you. Sorry if I got rude." Shawn says to Nash.
"Don't worry about it. I love you too bro." They hug and then Nash hugs me. Now the only people in the room are Sierra, Shawn, the nurses, the doctor, and I. Shawn stays mostly down by the actual birth canal and I move closer to Sierra's side. I let her grab ahold of my hand. Her face is scrunched up in a lot of pain.
"You're doing good Sierra." I say smiling to her. She screams.
"Now Sierra I'm gonna need you to push dear." he doctor says to her.
"I AM PUSHING!" she yells.
"I'm gonna need you to push harder." he says. I have no idea what he's doing. I'm looking at Sierra's face and then back at Shawn. I still have a good view of her under carriage.
"Just a little harder Sierra." the doctor says. I see tears of pain streaming down Sierra's face.
"I can't." she says. "It hurts so much." she whines.
"Come on Sierra, were almost done. Just a little more." he says. Her face scrunches up in pain, her eyes closing as she continues to push. I see a small head in the doctors hands. That's my baby. That's actually my child. "Just a little more." he says. I see the rest of the baby come into the doctors hands. Sierra's face floods with relief. "Would one of you like to cut the cord?" he asks us. I look at Shawn and nod my head.
"Are you sure?" he asks. I nod. He walks over a little and the doctor shows him where to cut. Shawn takes the special looking scissors and cuts the umbilical cord. The doctor turns around handing the baby to the nurses to clean it off. A small baby's cry fills the room.
"Let me see her." Sierra says. I couldn't see if it was a he or she yet. After a few seconds the doctor walks back over with the baby wrapped up in a blue blanket. "Here's your beautiful baby boy." he says handing my son to Sierra. She smiles and takes the baby into her arms. I look at Shawn smiling. We both get to her side and crouch down. Never in my life have I ever seen anything more beautiful than my little baby boy. Sierra rocks him back and forth, causing his crying to cease. Shawn is standing, crouched down opposite me, on the other side of the bed.
"Can I hold him?" I ask Sierra. She's looking down at her beautiful nephew.
"Of course." she says smiling. "Be careful." she smiles. She moves her arms up, handing me my son for the first time. I pull him close to my chest, holding his little head up with my hand. Shawn has now moved over to standing by my side.
"Hi there little buddy." I say to the smiling, sleeping, spectacular baby in my arms.
"Hey there big guy." Shawn says. One of his hand's is wrapped around my back and the other is under my hand holding up the baby's head.
"We're your daddies." I say cutely. I slowly rock him back and forth in my arms. I look back at a smiling Shawn. He's looking down at our son. Our son. I can't believe we've actually done it. I see how Shawn's eyes sparkle like they've never sparkled before; it's quite frankly the most adorable thing I've ever seen on him. "How are you Walter?" I ask the small baby.
"Walter?" Shawn laughs.
"Yah, do you like it?" I ask, looking up from the baby.
"I love it." he says smiling.
"Would you like to hold him?" I ask smiling. He moves his arms into position and I slide our son into his arms.
"Hey there baby Walter." Shawn says. His voice when talking to the baby is incredibly cute. "I'm your other daddy." He smiles at the small child. Shawn sticks his pinky finger towards the baby's hand, and slowly it opens, wrapping around his pinky. "Aww do you see that?" Shawn says adorably, smiling.
"We did this Shawn." I say, wrapping my arm around his back. "This beautiful baby boy is actually ours. He's so beautiful."
"I know." Shawn says. His eyes haven't left the baby's face.
"Ok I think he needs to eat." Sierra says. Shawn and I smile at the baby one last time and he moves over, carefully handing the baby back over to Sierra. I grab ahold of his hand.
"We did it Shawny. We're finally fathers."
"I know Cameron. I know." he says, resting his head on my shoulder as we look down at Sierra feeding our small baby.
"So his name is Walter?" Sierra asks.
"Yup." Shawn says. "Walter Peter Grayson Mendes-Dallas." he smiles at me. Shawn and I had talked about baby names a million times before having this baby. If it was a boy we were thinking about Grayson or Hamilton. I have absolutely no idea where the name Walter came from, but the moment I saw his face I loved it.
"Peter Grey?" I ask Shawn laughing.
"Do you not like them?" he asks worried.
"Absolutely." I say. "It's perfect." I smile.
"6 pounds 9 ounces." The doctor says. "And 11 inches long." He smiles at both Shawn and I.
"Thank you." I say to him. "Thank you for helping give us the most precious gift of our life's." The doctor chuckles at my response.
"Well whenever you're ready, I can get swabs of your cheeks, and blood drawn and get the baby's to send off to the lab. We should get a DNA Paternity test results back in about 4 days." I look at Shawn.
"I'm ready right now." I say.
"Me too."
"Ok. I'll have one of our nurses escort you to another room and we'll do all of that there."
"Thank you." I say. We follow the nurse to the other room. When we walk into the hallway my mom and Nash are sitting up against the wall. They immediately stand.
"Well?" my mom asks.
"A bouncy baby Walter." Shawn says smiling at them.
"A grandson!" she exclaims excitedly.
"Can we see him now?" Nash asks.
"Of course you guys can go on in and see him." I say smiling. They smile back, give us both hugs, and walk on into the hospital room.
