Chapter 49: Tests Results
Cameron's P.O.V.
I watch as Shawn looks at the small infant inside of the NICU(Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). It's basically just a glass box that protects, monitors, and insures the baby's safety. Shawn is holding my hand as he looks at the baby Summer. I look down at the small girl laying asleep. She doesn't look like Shawn. Then again, she is like 4 days old and is a girl, so she probably wouldn't look that much like him. We're supposed to be getting the DNA test results at three o' clock today. "Babe she's gonna be ok." I say to him. He looks up at me and smiles.
"I know." Although he's smiling, sadness can be seen in his eyes.
"She sure is beautiful." I say, trying to cheer him up.
"I know." he says, looking at her again. I see tears start to form in his eyes.
"Babe." I say sadly.
"I'm so confused." he says crying. "Am I supposed to love her? Am I not? I don't even know if she's mine." His head leans over into my shoulder, and I turn over facing him, so he can rest his head on me easier.
"Baby calm down. This whole situation is just confusing." I say, not really knowing what to say.
"Cameron what if she is mine? I don't feel any love for her at all. When I look at her all I see is a baby. I'm such an awful person." he says crying.
"Shawn you are not an awful person. Maybe that just means that she's not your baby. Maybe that's why you don't feel that love; cause you're body knows she isn't yours."
"But that's the thing Cameron! I don't know if she's mine or not. I have absolutely no idea." I hate when my Shawn is frustrated like this.
"Look at me babe." I make him look me in the eyes. "We are going to find out in," I pull out my phone to look at the time. It's 12:04. "Less than 3 hours if this child is yours. It does you no good to stand here and feel bad about yourself when you literally have no idea if Summer is yours." Summer is a really cute name for a baby. I'm kind of jealous of the baby's name. "Why don't we go take a little nap out in the car and when we wake up we'll be minutes away from knowing the truth." He's just looking back at Summer. "And besides if you can't sleep, you can cuddle with me." I reach down and grab his hand. "Come on. Besides the nurse is about to run us out of here. It's almost changing time." He lifts his hand up to his face and blows baby Summer a kiss. I grab ahold of his hand and we walk out of the nursery. "Do you wanna grab a bite to eat somewhere first? I know you haven't eaten in awhile." What would he do if he didn't have me here taking care of him all the time.
"I'm not very hungry." he says. I notice Shawn's hair looks extra curly today.
"Yes you are." I say confidently. "Let's go eat at that smile diner I saw a few blocks from the hospital." I smile at him.
"Ok." he says. We get into the rental car we've been using the past 4 days.
"Have you talked to Sierra while we've been gone?" I ask him.
"Nope." We drive the rest of the way in comfortable silence. While walking into the small diner named Country Cookin', I smell Shawn's cologne. God damn does it smell good.
"Two please." I say to the server.
"Follow me." she says. I follow behind Shawn. She shows us our table.
"I'll have a water." he says.
"Me too." I smile at the waitress.
"I'll be right back with your drinks." she says, walking away. Shawn sits down and I go in to sit down next to him. My body hits his and I just look at his blank face. I guess he doesn't want me to sit by him. I move over to the other side of the booth and sit across from him.
"I'm sorry Cameron." he says.
"No need. You just don't want me to sit by you." I say fake sounding mad.
"No I just didn't know you wanted to sit by me." He scoots over in the booth. "Come on." he says, hitting the place beside him.
"It's fine." I say, looking away, still sounding fake mad.
"Please babe. I want you to sit by me." I roll my eyes and maneuver my way over next to him. He wraps his arm around my waist and pulls me close. He pecks a small kiss on my cheek. I look over, smile, and rest my forehead against his. He smiles and pecks my lips. "I love you."
"I love you too Shawny." I face forward again, looking at the menu. I see Shawn look over at a table occupied by a couple of guys. The table is adjacent to our booth, about 10 feet away. He looks back down at the menu, not necessarily scared, but definitely not wanting to look back in that direction. I look over and seen three boys, each one probably 18 or 19, sending dirty looks in our direction. They literally won't stop starring at us, and laughing to each other. I go to move out of the booth and Shawn grabs my thigh.
"Stop Cameron." he says under his breath. I grab his hand and move it off of me.
"No Shawn. I'm not gonna sit here and let some ignorant, big headed people, make fun of us for being gay." I stand up from the table, walking over to them. Their faces express shock as I get closer. "Is there a problem?" I ask them. One of them is very muscular and blonde. You could call him the 'leader of the pack.'
"No." he responds.
"Then would you mind not looking over and laughing at my husband and I?" I ask them. Some of the rage has left my body. I need to keep my cool.
"We'll stop laughing as soon as you stop making out." he says standing up.
"We weren't making out sir." I say loudly. "My husband kissed me on the cheek! Is that against the law? I didn't think so. So until you get some respect for other human beings, then I suggest you just leave people alone." I turn around to walk back to Shawn. Shawn's face is shellshocked; he has no idea if he should be scared or happy. I see a smile creep up his face. I walk back over, sitting down in the booth and leaning over, kissing his cheek. "I love you." I say again. I put my left hand down, grabbing his right hand and set them up on the table. I look back at the boys who are completely dumbfounded by my reaction.
"You ok?" he asks.
"Yah. Why wouldn't I be?" I ask.
"I don't know. You just are very sensitive when people make homophobic gestures or remarks that's all." he says not in a rude way.
"Well we don't deserve that." I say. "No one does. But especially not you." I say smiling. He rolls his eyes.
"I'm glad you kept your cool. That's what it's all about; how we react when God puts stupid people like that in front of us." he says smiling.
"Kind of like a test." I say, smiling back.
"Yup. And you passed with flying colors."
*****
"It's time." he says nervously. I click the home button on my phone revealing it to be 3:01. Shawn is cuddled up in my arms as we are laying across the backseats of the rental car.
"I know." I say tiredly. "We're about to find out something that can forever alter our future."
"I just want you to know I love you." he says, scooting closer to me. "And if this baby is mine, I'm going to make this work."
"Well I want you to know that I love you and this baby being yours isn't going to change that. I might be hurt at first, but I love you. And that's all that matters." I peck a kiss on his forehead.
"And I-" My phone rings, interrupting him. It's them. I stare at the phone, heat building in my body. I slowly answer the call, putting it on speaker.
"Hello?" I ask.
"Is this a Mr. Cameron or Shawn Mendes-Dallas?" My heart skips a beat at the name. I love our last name.
"Yes it is." I say, swallowing the lump in my throat. Here goes nothing.
"Well the DNA test results for the child born to a Nevada Erin Winters are as follows: there is a 0% chance that one Shawn Peter Raul Mendes-Dallas is the paternal father of the child, and a no less than 99.9% chance that one Derrick Rade Dales is the paternal father of the child." I drop the phone pulling Shawn's face to mine. I connect our lips, my smile almost making it impossible to kiss.
"I love you, I love you, I love you." I say kissing him. I lean my forehead on his. "It all worked out." I say smiling. "It actually did." I wrap my arms around his waist pulling him close. My head is resting in his shoulder and his in mine. I feel his enormous smile brushed up against my shoulder.
"Hello? Hello?" I hear a muffled voice say. I reach down laughing, and grabbing my phone.
"Yes hello? Thank you, thank you, thank you, so much for our test results."
"Would you like us to fax a copy of the results and all regarding paperwork?"
"Yes please." I say happily. "I'll walk inside of the hospital and give you that fax address right away."I pull Shawn and myself up in the backseats. "Let's go baby boy." I say, a smile stretching from cheek to cheek on my face.
