- - — - -

AN
just a quick authors note.

this was a real bad chapter.

it wasn't even really in kinkkit's perspective, so I'm sorry that it is so bad 😅

well... here's chapter one i suppose!

Soft light trailed it's fingers across the three felines that lay inside a bracken nest, their fur melded as the two kits suckled at their mother's stomach.

The mother, a purist of the mighty Imperials, rasped her tongue over the smoky black kit-fluff of her son, smiling as she stroked her tail over her little daughter's calico pelt. She was exhausted from their birth, her eyes half-lidded and grin weak.

She ripped her gaze from her newly born children to the blue-eyed she-cat gathering herbs from the dusty floor and preparing to leave.

"Crystalpaw," the molly called quietly to the young healer exiting the nursery, "could you fetch Spiderbite while you're out? We need to name our kits."

The white apprentice nodded, her graceful form slipping out of the den and into the cloudy morning.

Squirming as faint voices reached her ears, the female kit nuzzled closer to her mother's tortoiseshell pelt, mewling pitifully as a fluffy coat smothered her from the side and another thickly-furred body rolled onto her own.

"That one will be a fighter, Freckleddance, that's for sure." A new, deep male voice joined the light squeaks erupting from the tussling minors. Pausing, the little she-kit raised her berry-pink nose, stretching her tiny jaws wide to scent the newcomer.

Her mother's belly rumbled with a loud purr. She leaned forward to touch noses with the dark tom, who moved to lay beside the nest. His long fur was the exact shade of his sons', with the exception of small, circular white spots above the tom-kit's eyes.

"Have you slept?" He asked quietly, shifting himself to hover over the nest.

Freckleddance shook her head. "Not since these two arrived. I can sleep later, but they need names. And they must be good ones," she added, "You know how your sister is.

"Spiderbite? I want to name her Titkit, after the bird."

"After the bird..." Spiderbite echoed, looking down at the named kit and swiping his long plumy tail over his mate's spine. Nodding in agreement, he shifted his golden gaze to the second kit, the firstborn.

"Then he must be Eggkit."

"Whatever you wish, my love. He is your spitting image," Freckleddance mewed proudly as the father buried his muzzle in her neck fur. His daughter, Titkit, heard her brother let out a low yawn, his scent changing as he drifted into sleep. Though her littermate had fallen into dreams, she kept herself awake and listening to the hushed conversation of her parents and the other noises coming from all sides of the nursery.

But even with her resistance to the milky fog surrounding her thoughts, the itty-bitty molly with her eyes shut felt her breathing deepen, and finally gave in, letting her mind rest...

Titkit woke to the sound of heavy pawsteps and an authoritative tone directed at the pair nestled around their offspring.

"Freckleddance, Spiderbite."

Titkit felt her mother stiffen as the second form lifted from his place at her side, replying to the greeting. "Mistystone, Magnoliaspring."

One of the cats that had entered the den stride towards the family, followed by her Crowned Princess.

"Have you named them?" The Seraphim asked, twitching her tail. The calico kit could make out the swishing of the dust parting for the tail, and fought the childlike urge to leap at the appendage and pin it to the floor.

"Yes, Mistystone," Titkit now knew the strong voice belonged to Mistystone, judging by the title supplied to her, "The tom is Eggkit, and the she-kit is Titkit."

"Titkit?" Hearing her name, Titkit perked her floppy ears and tried to apprehend who was speaking now. In the few hours she had been alive, so many new smells and sounds and names she had learned, and fresh ones kept reaching her.

"Indeed, Magnoliaspring, Titkit. After the bird. Is there a problem?" Freckleddance replied coolly, tightening her tail around the halo of feather-lined moss. Titkit squawked lightly, pressing up against Eggkit who returned a grunt of annoyance.

"Freckleddance, it's not only a bird," Magnoliaspring growled, glaring at the queen. The mother only stared back, her lilac gaze hardened as stone.

Whipping her head to the side, the successor faced Mistystone. "Well, mother? May she keep the name?"

Titkit, still very young and nowhere near used to politics or the life of the older cats, was puzzled at why they were fighting over a name. Her name, to be direct. She didn't mind whether it was the name of a bird or whatever else, it was the one she was given. They couldn't change it now, certainly?

"No, Magnoliaspring. Freckleddance, the name of your daughter must be changed."

"Fine!" Freckleddance snapped, and Titkit was momentarily stunned by the anger in her mother's input. "She'll be Kinkkit instead. Happy?"

Spiderbite, until this moment, had not made any comment towards the situation. He stood near his lover and his kin, taking note of the interaction between them.

"I think Kinkkit fits her well. Don't you agree, sister?" He murmured, meeting the Seraphim's large green eyes. She dipped her head to him, glancing back to Freckleddance and her children below.

"We will leave you to it, then. There are other litters to be accepted." Mistystone turned away, Magnoliaspring in tow, and padded towards another high-ranked she-cat with a trio of kits and her own mate by her side.

Spiderbite made his way back to them, muttering as he did so. Titkit was puzzled by the exchange. Was she Kinkkit now?

"It's fine, Freckleddance. She will still grow up to be the best purist she can be," he whispered, drawing his tongue over her dappled ear before stopping over his infant kin.

Titkit, now Kinkkit, felt billows of warm breath on her back, her father's face so close to hers. Aware of her brother and mother so close, she let out a sigh of contentment. She had tons of time to figure out the strangeness of this world. But for now, all she wanted to do was resume her rest undisturbed.
