Chapter 7: I'll Be The Vanguard
Character Facts: Ahsoka's birthday is on October 1st, making Kakashi a little bit over half- a-month older than her. This also makes her the second youngest in Team Minato after Rin. Her birthday is nine days before Naruto's birthday on October 10th.
This chapter finishes off the rest of episode 416 and also has scenes from episode 360...I think?
"You're late, Obito!" Kakashi scowled in his usual distaste at the panting Uchiha. The pure image of impatience. Obito only ignored him.
The spiky blonde hair was the first thing Obito noticed as he shifted his eyes to his new sensei, then he noticed the bright blue eyes as Minato Namikaze greeted him politely, "You're finally here. You must be Obito."
"We've been waiting for you." Rin smiled at the Uchiha. His lateness now being a common thing for her.
"Finally made it, huh?." Ahsoka grinned, also used to said boy's lateness.
(I tried my best people)
Obito continued panting, "Barely made it..." It wasn't really his fault the old ladies and black cats kept trying to ambush him at the worst possible moments....which were at all moments.
"You're really late." Kakashi huffed again, making Obito grit his teeth.
That silver bastard really can't take catch a break, huh?
"We've all introduced ourselves. You're the only one left! Though...I believe you are all familiar with each other. Specially with the little assignment I sent you all." The four nodded.
Minato gestured to Obito, "Why don't you introduce yourself?" A smug smirk immediately tugged on the boy's lips.
Oh...he had been waiting for this one...
"I'm going to be Hokage!" Obito shouted, startling the other four, "My name is Obito Uchiha! For my Great Stone Face, make sure my trademark googles and Sharingan are nicely carved out!" He then pointed dramatically at his audience, "So I can glare over the neighboring lands!"
Kakashi face palmed, already done with his bullshit, making Ahsoka chuckle. Sure she loved Obito...but damn, the boy was dramatic. She was one-hundred percent sure this was pre-planned.
"I'll scare the hell out of them with my Sharingan stare..." Minato watched Obito ramble on with a patient, soft smile, "...and no one will dare attack our village!"
Kakashi finally got fed up, "Rattle off your instructions after you become the Hokage and activate your Sharingan." Rin watched as the two bantered with an easy smile. "Besides how can they carve the Sharingan if you're wearing goggles?"
Ahsoka sighed and shook her head with a slight smile on her lips as Obito's cries of protest followed. "They can carve it out over my goggles!"
"Then it will look like your eyeballs are popping out!" Rin pointed out. Everyone chuckled at the mental image except Obito who looked at the floor dejectedly.
Minato was the first to compose his amusement. "Anyways... I'm happy someone on this team shares my dream." He put his hands on his hips as he introduced himself, "I'm Minato. From now on, I'll be your superior. Pleasure to meet you." His bright caring blue eyes and flamboyant blonde hair almost made him seem harmless.
Obito gave the man an excited thumbs up, "Yeah!"
The blonde immediately laughed at the enthusiasm, "All right, let's have our first training session together." He gestured for Obito to go stand between his teammates.
"H-hai." Rin agreed as Obito took his spot between Ahsoka and Kakashi.
"In this session, I want to see your teamwork." Kakashi and Obito sweat dropped and sent each other side glares.
Rin seemed stunned, "Teamwork?"
"Oh, this isn't going to work." Ahsoka murmured as she watched her male teammates through a side glance.
Ignoring the comments, Minato quickly foraged through his pocket, "Take these three bells from me, and practice will be over." He pulled out three harmless looking bells, "Simple, right?" He gave his team a closed eyed smile.
"Three bells means..." Kakashi was quick to notice. Ahsoka gasped in understanding too.
"Exactly." Minato continued smiling
"Huh?" Obito turned to Ahsoka, "What does it mean?" He clung to Ahsoka's arm desperately for answers. She quickly shooed him off, ignoring the rising heat on her cheeks.
Rin brought a hand up to her mouth and gasped too. Now Obito was getting annoyed.
"But what does it mean?" He whined more urgently.
Kakashi sent him a side glare which Obito bluntly returned, "One of us will be dropped from the team."
"What!?" Obito squawked.
"Good observation." Minato sweat dropped, then recovered just as quickly, eyes turning serious, "Okay...let's start." The bells jiggled.
Kakashi went for the grab, failing as Minato quickly side stepped with no effort, the bells jingling at his hips tauntingly.
Kakashi panted, already tired, 'I know he is giving us a break... but Minato-sensei is way too skilled.' He thought as he watched Obito and Rin try to hit their sensei from all angles. 'There is no way I can do it alone.' He continued watching with an analytical eye, then spotted something- the slowness of his dodges.
'I knew it. Minato sensei is making an allowance for our skill levels! Compared to how he is against Obito and Rin... With me he doesn't ease up as much.' A sudden blur flew past Kakashi, leaving him with wide eyes, '...or her.'
Ahsoka came up behind Minato, arm, extended and brows furrowed. His eyes widened as he only nearly had time to throw himself back out of the way. He quickly found himself having to jump up as Ahsoka went in for another attack. Her hands almost grazed the bells.
The two continued to out run each other as the other three watched with wide eyes.
The blur that was Ahsoka did a hand-less roundoff when she got close to her sensei and extended her hand as she flipped midair in front of Minato. But his guard was up this time. He suddenly smirked as he kneed her in her solar plexus, sending her flying. She only nearly caught herself by doing a backflip. Ahsoka panted as she fell hard to one knee, sweat sticking to her brow as she studied her sensei from a far.
Kakashi saw his opening. 'Now is my chance.' He rushed forward from behind Minato, arm stretched, ready to grab a bell in a similar stance to Ahsoka's first try. His hopes were crushed as the blonde turned to face him with his unwavering smirk. Quickly dodging Kakashi who skittted to a stop.
The silver haired prodigy panted behind gritted teeth as he looked back at Minato, meeting his bright blue eyes. A knowing look flashed through them before he broke eye contact, turning to a charging Obito who leapt into the air.
He was trying to tell him something. But what? The only thing Kakashi knew was that at this rate, he was definitely not going to get a bell.
He watched Obito tumble off his failed attempt. Rin called out for him in concern while Ahsoka turned for a moment, mouth opening as if to call out. Then she closed it, turning to continue to looking at her opponent instead, a calculating gaze in her eyes. That was until they shifted towards Kakashi.
Amber orbs once again met onyx across the training field. Then it clicked. All those weird glances his sensei sent him, all the obvious moves... it all just clicked— and Kakashi would've rolled his eyes, except they were still fixed on Ahsoka's.
The answer was so simple... yet so annoying: there was no way they could do this alone. Or better yet— Minato wouldn't let them, unless they worked together.
Something strange flashed in Ahsoka's eyes, which made Kakashi wonder in his mind, 'Do you know?' His thoughts sounded so far away.
The two continued to stare at each other.... as if time had slowed. A gust of wind gently moving her auburn hair.
After what felt like ages, Ahsoka nodded and the two broke eye contact, not at all phased, "Obito! Rin!" She called back to her teammates. The two turned to Ahsoka confused, and so did Minato, "The first formation taught at the academy!"
"Huh!?" The two genin stared at their friend with puzzled looks.
"I doubt a simple formation like that would work against Minato-sensei." Obito muttered as the two quickly stood up.
"Just do it!" Kakashi shouted out. Surprising their teacher and their two teammates at the fact that Kakashi was in on it too. The two friends looked at Ahsoka for confirmation. She nodded.
Rin looked at Obito, "I guess it's worth a try."
Obito agreed, "It's better than doing nothing." He quickly gave a thumbs up, "Okay, I'm in!"
Minato's lips had the slightest upward tug as he nodded in approval.
Kakashi quickly took the lead, "Here we go!"
"Yeah!"
"Right!"
The four immediately started running in circles around Minato, trying to cut off his escape. 'I see only one opening with Minato sensei.' Kakashi thought, 'If I use these three to trap him, we have a chance!' The four then took to the air with graceful twists in perfect sync.
After what felt like hours, the blonde jonin stood tall with a closed eyed smile, looking down at his exhausted team of genin. "You all pass."
Kakashi panted heavily with his hands on his knees as Obito wheezed on the ground looking ready to pass out. Ahsoka was on her hands and knees, trying to control her labored breathing. Rin was on the floor wiping mud off her face. All four were panting heavily, exhausted, sweaty, tired, not knowing how they were still even alive.
Kakashi looked down at his closed palm and opened it slowly, revealing a single small silver bell.
For the first time in a while, he grinned, his victory only soured by the fact that he had to rely on people. He stood up fully, deciding to ignore that fact for now.
"All right," Minato's blue eyes looked over his exhausted team, "We'll start our first mission tomorrow."
Obito threw his hands up cheering, forgetting his exhaustion. "That's more like it! I'll show you what've got in a real battle!"
"Actually, this first mission is inside the village. Like finding a lost pet, or a lost item."
Obito was quick to whine, "Those are just odd jobs!"
Minato addressed the goggle wearing Uchiha, "A mission is a mission. If you succeed, then I'll assign more important missions." He then looked at the silver haired boy on his team.
"Kakashi, you've been on many missions already and this may seem boring, but do your best anyways." Kakashi's face deflated a little in annoyance but he knew it couldn't be helped.
Ahsoka looked over at the boy, 'That's right, he has already been doing missions outside of the village. Perks of graduating early I guess.'
"Okay! Kakashi, I challenge you!" Obito called out.
"Huh?"
"Let's see who can complete more missions."
Kakashi turned away from Obito, "That's stupid. Do as you please."
Obito smirked, "You chicken?"
Kakashi's eyes snapped open and sent Obito an intense side glare, "What did you say?" Obito returned his glare with one of his own.
Kakashi soon found himself opening a box and peering inside, "It's not here."
Rin leaned down on her hands and knees, holding her hair back from failing on her face, "It's not here." She called out as well.
High on the rooftops, Ahsoka stood with her eyes closed, her middle and index finger raised in front of her face in a half Ram sign. Then, her eyes snapped open, and in a flash she was tackling a cat.
She tumbled onto an alley, smirking, "Ah ha! Got ya!" Her smile quickly fell as she looked at the big fat orange cat she had in her hands.
"Huh?!" Definitely not the one they were looking for. The cat hissed and launched for her face, "AYY! It's not here! UGH-stop it!"
A few minutes later, all three had landed on their side roof meeting place, "Found it?" Rin asked.
"No."
"Nope."
"It's not here either," muttered Rin. "Looking for a lost pet isn't easy, is it." She glanced at the floor dejectedly.
Ahsoka sighed sadly, dropping her head with a slouch, "We would have been done already! If I only knew which cat it was." Her disappointment was practically coming off of her like waves. The scratches on her arms and face didn't help her look either.
Being an Aoyama gave her exceptional sensing skills far greater than an ordinary ninja. She had focused on refining that skill over the years but it still needed some work. At the moment, she could sense things in her wide range vicinity and what they were, but she couldn't tell who the individual was unless she had met them in person and was familiar with their chakra....same went for cats.
Rin patted her shoulder with an encouraging smile, "It's ok. You've already ruled out fifteen stray cats, that's something." Ahsoka sent her friend a half hearted glare.
"But if we can't succeed at something like this, our team will never be sent on real missions." Kakashi suddenly spoke up, hands on his hips, "By the way, where is Obito?" He looked to his left.
"He was determined to do everything alone and went off somewhere." Rin and Ahsoka turned to face the way he was looking.
Ahsoka closed her eyes in defeat, "That idiot."
Kakashi gazed out into the horizon of rooftops at noon, 'Is he serious about beating me?'
Somewhere else in the Leaf village, Obito walked through the streets showing the picture of the cat to all the old ladies he knew for information. One of them luckily pointed him in the right direction.
"Oh, Obito! That cat was on the rooftop up again basking in the sun!"
"Obito. I saw that thing on a park bench."
"Oh right, by the way, I have some yummy sweets you can take with you!"
Soon enough, the Uchiha stood in front of his team with a cat, a box wrapped in purple cloth, and a couple of scratches on his face.
He smiled proudly at his team as they stood on a red bridge, "Hehe, finding a lost pet, and a lost item! Solved them both thanks to the grannies!" He raised up his hand, "And I even got treats!"
Rin looked shocked but had a wide smile as Ahsoka spoke in disbelief, "You really weren't lying all those times you were late."
"'One good deed deserves another.' This time, Obito's kindness was returned." Minato quoted wisely.
His praise was promptly ignored as Obito turned to Kakashi with a fierce grin, "How's that, Kakashi?!" Obito leaned forward with a grin. Kakashi's eyes widened but he quickly looked away with a scoff.
The Third Hokage tallied off the last D-rank mission in his book for the day with a sigh, "All the odd jobs in the village were taken care of in one day." He held his pipe and looked down at the paper, unsure what to do.
"Right! It's because I'm the man that will become Hokage! This is nothing!" Obito boosted excitedly with his clenched fists raised.
"Lord Hokage, I believe this team is far more skilled than we thought." Minato explained.
The Hokage hummed, "You're right. Kakashi already has lots of field experience. Perhaps I shall send them along with you on your mission tomorrow."
The five team members were taken aback, "On Minato sensei's mission?!" Kakashi asked in disbelief.
"Is this a real mission?!" Obito asked excitedly.
"Yes and the client had specifically requested Minato."
Minato turned to his team, frowning, "It's a C-rank mission. Although the risk is low, I'd be lying if I said there was absolutely none."
"I was planning to assign you more odd jobs in the village while Minato was away," Team Minato turned their attention back to the Hokage. "But there are no more requests and I can't just let you wait around."
"Yes!" Obito threw a punch in the air.
Rin joined her hands together, "This means we are going on our first real mission."
Ahsoka sighed in relief, "Finally."
"Okay then." Minato spoke to his team, "I'm counting on you all tomorrow."
"Yes, sir!" The four chorused back.
With that they took their leave. The four genin then parted ways with their sensei and walked through the outer halls of the Hokage mansion.
"Well, Kakashi?!" Obito walked with his hands behind his head, "You should be more grateful to me. I'm the only reason there are no more odd jobs to do." He boosted in an irritating tone.
Surprisingly it was Rin who spoke up, "Kakashi, don't get upset with Obito." The three looked ver at her in surprise, "Obito's been worried about you for a long time. He thinks you've changed..."
Obito quickly ran ahead and stood in front of Rin, " W-What are you saying Rin?!"
The four stopped walking, "Well it's true," Ahsoka smiled sheepishly as Obito sent her a look full of betrayal.
"And you've always said that Kakashi and Ahsoka were better than you..." Rin spoke firmly, "So you've trained hard to catch up!"
Obito grimaced and put his hands on his hips stubbornly, "Did not! I never said that! You're imagining things!"
Ahsoka looked at them with soft eyes and a kind patient smile. She knew Obito was very sensitive about this. How he always wanted to surpass them. But maybe bringing it up to the light my help him in the long run.
And not for the first time, Kakashi wondered about Ahsoka. The other two he knew their skills, or lack- there- of in his opinion. But she...she was a mystery. She was able to push Minato-sensei, the Yellow Flash of the Leaf into a higher speed during training. And she seemed to have some sort of sensing ability she could use with ease. 'Just who is she? And what are her skills?'
Rin walked in between Ahsoka and Obito and offered her hands, "Come on, let's all shake hands. We're on the same team now." Ahsoka didn't hesitate and happily grabbed Rin's right hand.
Obito scoffed as both boys looked opposite ways, "I'm not shaking hands with this guy!" Rin looked between the two boys and dropped her head.
"Really..." She sighed, "You're both hopeless." Ahsoka gave a cute pout, displeased with their behavior. The two girls shared a look and nodded. Ahsoka loved that fact about her and Rin, they could just tell what the other was thinking of doing with a simple glance...specially when it came to dealing with these two.
Rin grabbed Obito's hand with her left while Ahsoka grabbed Kakashi's with her right. "Then, we'll have to connect the both of you." Ahsoka stated firmly. She looked up to meet Kakashi's wide dark orbs and gave him a warm soft smile. For some reason his breath was caught in his throat.
He'd seen the angry side of her, the teasing and devilish side all be directed at him. But he had never been on the receiving end of this one: the caring side.
The forest passed in a blur as the four genin ran, leading the escort through the dirt road with Minato bringing up the rear.
Obito smirked and broke the silence, "All right! I'm gonna show my stuff big-time and make it to Hokage!" The other three turned to look at him.
"You do realize you can't become Hokage over night, right?" Ahsoka spoke from Obito's left, concern that he actually believed that was laced in her voice.
"Obito, were you even listening to Minato-sensei? We are not to engage in any type of battle. Besides we would only get in Minato sensei's way."
Obito looked at Kakashi with a raised eyebrow, "Is he really that amazing?"
"Haven't you ever heard of the Yellow Flash of the Leaf?" Kakashi questioned.
"I have. He's an incredible shinobi whose fame has spread to other villages too." Rin offered more information.
Ahsoka spoke up, "I've heard of him too."
"And he is our teacher, Minato Namikaze, the man touted to be the next Hokage." Kakashi finished off.
Obito's face lit up, "Seriously?! Someone that great is teaching us? I feel my blood rushing! Man, I wish someone would attack us!"
"Jeez," The other three sweatdropped, realizing he really hadn't been paying attention to a word Minato sensei had said.
"Hey, I wonder, who's stronger, the Yellow Flash of the Leaf or the White Fang of the Leaf?" Kakashi's and Rin's eyes widened. Ahsoka grimaced, sensing the sudden change in mood from her two teammates.
"O-Obito!"
But Obito continued talking obliviously, "The Hidden Leaf had a hero named the White Fang. But I heard he died protecting the village." Kakashi kept his head down and his eyes shut close.
Obito turned to his teammates, "Haven't you heard of him?"
Kakashi suddenly sped off as he growled, "No, I haven't!"
Obito watched his teammate bolt off, "Kakashi?" the Uchiha sweat dropped,"What's with him?"
Ahsoka furrowed her brow in concern as she watched the silver haired boy running ahead.
Minato looked side to side, alert and tense, 'This is strange....we're surrounded. There are quite a few of them too. What's going on?'
He continued running, not giving any hints that he knew they were there. 'This is far more dangerous than the rank assigned to this mission. I have to stop them here before I'm completely surrounded.'
'Bringing along the team might have been a mistake.' He looked ahead at the four genin leading the group completely clueless to what was going or...not...there was one that knew. Minato noticed Ahsoka was tense. 'The Aoyama sensing skills never fail, huh?'
She turned around and met Minato's eyes with a focused gaze, awaiting his next orders. 'I can depend on these two to guard the people.' His thoughts traveled to the two most talented in the team. Kakashi and Ahsoka.
Minato gave Ahsoka a nod and sped up to catch up with the four, "Everyone, listen up." He made his way to Ahsoka's left side and addressed the team.
"What is it, sensei?" Obito asked.
"Looks like the enemy is on our tail."
Obito light up like a Christmas tree, "Seriously?! We're going to fight?!"
"Obito! This is not a game!" Minato scowled, causing Obito to sweat drop.
"Uh, yes sir."
"There are quite a few of them. Obito and I will track back and confront them. In the meantime, Kakashi and Rin will complete the mission. Ahsoka, you will be leading the way sensing for any of the enemy ninja and avoiding them at all costs." She nodded.
"It's imperative that you three escape." Minato gave his final order.
"Yes, sir." The three chorused.
"All right...Let's go, Obito." Minato turned and sped off in the opposite direction.
"Roger!" Obito follows him with a wide smile.
The two landed behind the group, "Oh man, Minato-sensei! To have to pick me instead of Kakashi or Ahsoka...This just means you depend on me!"
Minato furrowed his brows, "Obito, we're going to lure the enemy without a fight and separate them from the main group."
"I know that!" Just then, a barrage of kunai was thrown at them from every direction. Obito narrowed his eyes and went through the hands signs as fast as he could.
"Katon! Fireball justsu!" The forest was washed in an orange light as Obito's huge fireball melted all of the oncoming kunai.
"Oh, not bad." Minato was pleasantly surprised.
"I wasn't kidding about practicing everyday!" Obito then jumped in to battle with Minato shouting after him.
The main group continued running through the forest, Ahsoka in the front with Kakashi and Rin guarding the rear. The light auburn haired Aoyama narrowed her eyes as she sensed enemy nin catching up to them. 'They'll be on to of us in no time.'
She made a quick hand sign, signaling to Kakashi their situation. "They're here." He scanned the trees to see figures jumping and running through the bushes.
"Rin! Go on ahead!"
"Got it!" She sped up to catch up with Ahsoka at the head of the group.
As they neared a bridge, Kakashi turned on his heel and blocked multiple kunai coming for the group with amazing speed. But he missed one. His eyes widened as it flew past his head, "Damn it!" He yelled out. The kunai hit one of the shinobi they were guarding on his left shoulder as they crossed the bridge.
The man cried out in pain. He tripped and fell backwards down to the river, screaming the whole way down.
Rin and Ahsoka gasped, "Kakashi! We have to save him!" Rin called out panicking, "Minato sensei is still nearby right now! If we turn back and let him know-"
"No! A shinobi's duty is to carry out the mission!" Ahsoka's eyes widened at his words with her mouth agape.
"Kakashi..." Rin murmured softly in worry.
"You can't be serious!" Ahsoka called back.
"Huh?" Kakashi turned around.
"Some of these men are carrying the scrolls. What if one of them was him!" Ahsoka pointed down at the rushing river far below.
"What are the chances of one of them being him? It's better to take the risk!"
"But he needs our help!" Ahsoka shouted desperately.
Kakashi tsked, "We don't have time for this! Getting away is imperative! Once we are in the forest the village will be near! They won't pursue us that far."
Ahsoka was about to say something else when she was interrupted by Rin, "Understood!"
The young Aoyama whipped around to look at her friend in disbelief, "Rin?"
The brunette wore an almost guilty expression. "I'm sorry Ahsoka, but he's been on more missions than us and has more experience." Rin's voice gained more confidence as she went on, letting her conviction be known. "I'm going to follow his orders."
With that Rin sped off down the bridge followed by the other shinobi, "W-wait, Rin!" Ahsoka called out extending her hand.
"Come on. We can't get separated." Kakashi quickly grabbed Ahsoka's hand as he pulled her along to follow the rest.
A/N: Since those episodes were really action packed I didn't have much of a chance of adding any extra scenes to move Kakashi and Ahsoka along without making this chapter like 10,000 words long. Plus it wouldn't really fit with to make them get closer before this mission, the timing just doesn't feel right. I did try to sprinkle in some moments though to not completely deprive you people of it.
If you all have any questions or would like to know more fun facts about Ahsoka or any other character please ask in the comment section. I'll do my best to answer!
