Chapter 4: Jealousy is an Ugly Thing
Ahsoka blocked the punch with ease, jumping up to avoid the kick being thrown at her, she quickly twisted her body around using her momentum and kicked Kurenai in the ribs.
The raven haired girl stumbled, careful not to fall.
Ahsoka rushed towards Kurenai again, quickly throwing a punch at her face which the girl managed to dodge.
Kurenai then crouched down, extending her leg and sweeping Ahsoka off her feet, to which the girl quickly caught herself, placing her hands on the ground and doing a backflip back into her stance.
Barely a second later, Kurenai was rushing towards Ahsoka, kunai in hand.
Seeing an opening, Ahsoka moved almost too fast for the students to catch, swatting the red eyed girl's wrist as it approached her face, quickly grabbing the arm and twisting it behind Kurenai's back, snatching the kunai and pointing it at the back of the raven haired head.
"Winner, Ahsoka Aoyama!" Ikamaru-sensei called the victor as cheers erupted from the academy students watching from the sidelines.
"Great job, Ahsoka!"
"Good try Kurenai!"
"Splendid my youthful lily, splendid!"
Ahsoka sweat dropped at Guy's comment, "I'm not a lily."
She quickly let go of Kurenai and held out the kunai for her. Kurenai took it back with a sweet smile, "Thanks, you were really cool by the way,"
"You were too, that leg sweep caught me off guard." Kurenai blushed at the compliment, knowing that her taijutsu skills weren't necessarily the best, she preferred the calmer and less physical genjutsu.
"But you got yourself up so quickly. I couldn't even see when you flipped me around,"
Ahsoka tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, laughing, "Maa, that was nothing."
The other kids in the class were nice. Socializing with the students had definitely become easier during the past month at the academy.
She had started to get to know the kids a lot more after they started to approach her when they saw she opened up to Obito, Rin, and even Guy.
'Yeah, they aren't too bad,' She thought to herself with a gentle smile as she scanned the crowd of cheering academy students.
Ikamaru-sensei approached the two girls with a pleased grin, "Good work you two, now do the union sign." The two girls connected their fingers in the typical shinobi spar peace offering, sending each other kind smiles.
"Oi Ahsoka!" Rin waved her over to where she and Obito were standing.
Ahsoka wasted no time, quickly jogging up to them with a pleased smirk.
"That was great Ahsoka! Even Ikamaru-sensei was impressed." Rin praised as the honey colored eyed girl approached.
Ahsoka gave a warm laugh, "Thanks, Rin."
Obito huffed, "You were okay, I guess," and he looked away, pouting. Something he did quite often, but not to Ahsoka, not anymore.
She looked at her friend with wide eyes before glancing down at her sandals, a frown on her face.
He was jealous.
'I thought we were past that,' She thought, Obito's dismissing huff hurting more than she cared to admit.
Obito looked back at her with a guilty look but said nothing.
"Next up, Anko Mitarashi and Hayate Gekko,"
They stayed and watched the rest of the matches, cheering their classmates on. Ahsoka had been pleasantly surprised when she found out Guy was actually pretty good at taijutsu as he effectively kicked Ebisu's ass.
However, Obito's attitude still bothered her. It wasn't what he said...it was how he said it that troubled her; his body language had screamed dislike.
He seemed fine during lunch, it wasn't until training that his mood changed.
'Is he really that upset at my skills?' The thought kept coming back to her as she sneaked glances at him.
It wasn't like she could do much about that, she couldn't just purposely hold-back. But she didn't want to lose one of the first people she opened up to.
She couldn't just let him walk away.
The kids flooded out of the academy later that evening, droplets of rain splattered on the concrete at Ahsoka's feet, but she wasn't paying attention to that, she was looking for a certain goggle wearing boy.
"Darn...it's gonna rain soon," Ahsoka turned, hearing Rin before spotting her walking towards her with a group of other academy students, "I guess our plans are ruined." Rin lamented looking at the grey clouds.
"Aw come on! It's not that bad, it's just a little water." Genma said, rolling his eyes while keeping his hands behind his neck, still chewing on that damn needle.
Asuma rolled his eyes right back at him, "Yeah...if rain is just a little water then Kumo is only a little murdery."
Genma elbowed him and Asuma pushed him back with a grin, both of them were soon on the floor trying to throw punches at each other while the others giggled.
Rin finally took notice of Ahsoka standing only a bit away and waved, "Hey Ahsoka! We were just looking for you and Obito! We were gonna go play kick-the-can but..." She looked up at the sky with a grimace.
"The weather is not in our favor." Kurenai added, crossing her arms and shaking her head miserably.
Ahsoka looked up at the looming grey clouds above them, "Yeah..." She held up her right hand, catching a few drops in her hand while pressing her books close to her chest.
"We can still walk home together though if you'd like," Rin offered, "If we hurry up we might even get home before it starts pouring."
Ahsoka gave Rin a grateful smile, "Thanks... but I actually have some things to take care of away from home." She glanced over at the direction in which she had sensed the Uchiha's chakra...the training grounds.
Rin's faced dropped a little in concern and lowered her voice as she stepped closer to the Aoyama, making sure the others wouldn't hear, "Is this about today with Obito?"
Ahsoka blinked at Rin, "H-how'd you know?"
Rin frowned, "I- well- he...acted strange around you." She glanced away from Ahsoka for a second, who gave an indignant scoff.
"You mean how he gave me the cold shoulder?" She then glanced down at her sandals, "It-It's not just about today, it's about every day." She then finally looked up to meet Rin's big concerned doe eyes.
"I have to go talk to him, alone." Ahsoka said, her tone affirmative.
Rin nodded, "That's probably the best idea, but I don't know where he is right now." Ahsoka's lips turned to smirk at that.
"I might have an idea where..."
Rin looked at her confused, "How?"
Ahsoka merely winked, "Let's just say the Aoyama clan has many talents."
The ground was muddy and slippery as Ahsoka walked through the grass. The trees were providing some cover from the now pouring rain but not a lot since she was still getting absolutely drenched. Wondering if her little endeavor was worth a cold she stopped, her target just ahead.
The young Uchiha, barely visible in the mist and rain, threw a barrage of shuriken at the wooden post. He then somer-saulted as if dodging invisible shuriken and did hand- signs mid air.
"Katon, Great Fireball Justsu!" The dark and gloomy day was suddenly lit up by the powerful ball of flame created by the jutsu. The post and the shuriken were left steaming as the jutsu subsided. Obito bent down a leaned on his knees panting heavily while examining his work.
He then growled, "Damn it, I could have made it bigger." Scoffing, he straightened up and got into position. Ahsoka took this as her chance to appear to the boy's left, hands behind her back.
"It looked pretty big to me." Obito gave an undignified screech and slipped on the mud. She winced at the awkward position, "Are you ok?"
Obito quickly scampered to his feet his face bright red in embarrassment, "Y-you only caught me off guard...I-I wa-wasn't scared or anything." He mumbled that last part making Ahsoka smile a little.
"That fireball was pretty good, considering the rain makes it harder to maintain." His chest swelled up in pride with a smug smirk. His demeanor quickly changed though, taking Ahsoka off guard.
"Yeah, well I bet you could do it sooo much better," He turned his back to her facing the burnt log, "Now if you'll excuse me, I have training to do." The bitterness in his voice felt like a kunai to Ahsoka's chest. He started walking closer to the log, his clothes drenched and now muddy from the fall.
"Wait," Obito felt a hand on his arm and turned to see the concerned eyes of Ahsoka, their bright warm color standing out in the grey scenery surrounding the two. Her wet hair sticking to the sides of her face as droplets dripped down her chin and arms.
"I did promise to give you and Rin some training tips, no?" She said with a smile. The way she spoke, it was so different from the girl that punched him in the street and yelled at him in class. The way she spoke was like hearing a soft river, welcoming and calming you into its waters.
But this girl, she had everything come easy to her while Obito had to struggle and work himself to the bone in the freezing rain. She was no better than Kakashi. Everyone in the class loved her, almost all the boys admitted to having a crush on her, and she never seemed to do anything wrong. Hearing her speak wasn't calming at all to him.
Obito growled.
"I don't need your help!" He snatched his arm away from her grasp, she gasped at the sudden roughness, "Go bother someone else, huh!? Or better yet, go show off your skills to someone who actually cares!"
"O-Obito," Her voice trembled slightly from shock. Her eyes were wide open. 'I-I knew he was upset..but this' The hand that had grabbed his arm stood frozen in place. 'He-he really hates me...one of my first friends hates me...'
"Obito, please listen."
The hurt in her eyes made Obito's stomach drop. 'I'm definitely crossing a line, she hasn't done anything to me...but..but'
"Just— Just leave me alone." He said, his voice softer. He turned his back to her, not being able to bear to look at her in the eye. The rain continued to pour on the two academy students as they stood in tense silence.
Ahsoka slowly lowered her hand to her side. "Obito..." Her gaze was fixated on the ground, "I know that you hate me and I know that you don't want to see me." He turned around, eyes wide.
"But... I can't just let you walk away. You and Rin were my first friends here in Konoha," She turned her gaze upward to meet his onyx eyes, "You've done for me more than you know, that's why...that's why I can't lose you because of something so petty." Her brow was furrowed in determination as she spoke passionately.
Obito stared at the girl with disbelieving eyes for a second, "A-Ahsoka, I-I don't hate you, I never did," He took a couple of steps forward. "I was only..." He struggled, cringing almost as it physically pained him to say it, "...jealous." He looked to the side in shame and embarrassment.
Her eyes widened a fraction, but a wave of relief washed over her, "You don't hate me?"
He sent her a sheepish smile, "No, the truth is...you are amazing Ahsoka. You are good at everything Ikamaru sensei makes us do and more. I mean...you are getting really good using a sword, I guess that's from practicing with Hiroshi-san."
Those were words that Ahsoka heard all the time. but coming from Obito, it somehow felt different, like her chest was fluttering. A blush started to appear on her cheeks, 'What the heck?'
Obito continued, "That's-that's why I guess I've been acting so mean to you." He looked down at the ground in shame, "...Even when I try my hardest I can't catch up to you or Kakashi. All I've done is stare at your backs my whole life." He clenched his fist in frustration as his voice rose. Ahsoka looked at him in shock as he spoke.
"I want to be the Hokage. The best one this village has ever seen." He looked her in the eyes. She could have sworn she saw tears coming out of his eyes but it was hard to tell with the rain. "But how can I do that if I'm always staring at your backs! How can I if I can't surpass you!"
His voice lowered and he spoke softly, "That's why I'm jealous, that's why I've been treating you horribly." He looked down at his feet, "Gomen, Ahsoka."
She stood silent for a minute, maybe two. Obito couldn't really tell, 'Is she not going to forgive me?' The thought scared Obito. 'I wouldn't blame her if she didn't, I don't really deserve it'
"Obito," He slowly turned his gaze up to meet her eyes and to his surprise, she was smiling, "Someone told me that 'You don't have to be the toughest, fastest ninja in the village to be Hokage.'"
His eyes widen at her words, "Sure you have to be strong, but you also have to be the one that cares the most about the people around you. You have to be the one willing to give your heart for the village."
"And I think that person could be you." She broke into a full closed eyed smile, "I've seen how you care about your friends," Her eyes opened and narrowed at him, "Even if you sometimes let you emotions get in the way." He bowed his head in shame with a dark embarrassed blush.
However she only sighed and smiled at him, "But I forgive you, and I hope you can forgive me for not helping you like you wanted."
"A-Arigato Ahsoka. I don't know how I can ever make it up to you."
She crossed her arms over her chest and looked up at the rain that was still pouring, "Well, we could start by getting out of the rain before we get pneumonia."
Obito chuckled sheepishly, "Hai, I guess we should."
Ahsoka watched him for a second before speaking, "And Obito...I do believe that one day...I'll be the one staring at your back." Obito's eyes widened before a smile broke through.
"You can bet on it!" He said with a wide grin causing Ahsoka to laugh. A slight blush returning to her cheeks.
When their laughter subsided she looked back at him with a raised eyebrow, "Where are your academy books anyway? Wouldn't they get wet in the rain?" His eyes widen in shock as he realized he fucked up.
"OH MY GOD MY GRANDMA IS GONNA KILL ME." He dashed off to where his now ruined academy books laid on the wet ground.
Ahsoka took off her soaking, muddy shoes as she stepped into the apartment. "Tadaima!" She called out and Hiroshi came out of his bedroom, looking Ahsoka up and down.
"Kami, how did you get so wet? Here let me get a towel." He quickly trotted to the bathroom and came back with a towel in hand.
"It was pouring! By the way did Rin drop off my textbooks?"
Hiroshi kneeled down and wrapped the towel around Ahsoka, "Hai, she said you had some important things to do...?" He raised an eyebrow at her as he passed the towel through her wet hair.
"Yeah, don't worry about it, it's all good now." She sent him a wide grin.
He rolled his eyes at her vagueness, "Well you better not have gotten sick, you have training tomorrow with me, remember?"
"Hai!" She said excitedly, then as if some divine being had been listening, Ahsoka sneezed. She looked up at Hiroshi with a sweat drop, giving him a nervous chuckle as she received a deadpan look.
A/N: These past few chapters have come out a lot more emotional that I had wanted....oops. Haha sorry I just had to get her relationship with the other characters around her down before we could move on to the actual story and they involved a lot of emotion.
Starting next chapter actual scenes from the show will be added. Ahsoka might not always be the focus in those parts because sometimes those scenes are done from a different point of view like Obito's for example. Just a small thing to expect.
Kakashi will be appearing in a few chapters but not yet. Did I also maybe make Ahsoka have feeling for Obito...yeah... hehehe
***Next Update will be July 1
