Four
~Phil~
-----
From what I've seen so far, Dan seems like a pretty nice kid. I'll be honest, I was a bit nervous about the whole getting an aid around the school because I was worried that they would judge me and the rest of my senior year would be absolute hell.
But I think it'll be...okay.
"Finally!" Dan cried. "It's lunch time! God, I'm starving!"
I didn't tell him that I wasn't. It would only make him worried. And that's the last thing that I wanted.
"You can meet the band!" Dan told me excitedly as we began making our way to the lunch room.
"You're in a band?"
"Since Year Six!" He told me with a hint of pride. "Or sixth grade as the Americans would call it."
"So you've been in this band for three years?"
"Two." Dan corrected. "My bandmates are actually a year older than me but I got to skip Year Seven."
"That explains why you're in such advanced classes." I smiled.
"I really didn't try in school until I got to be a freshman like you are."
"Yeah, that make sense." Dan nodded. "After all, colleges really look at your grades in high school."
When Dan and I walked into the lunch room, two guys waved at him. They were sitting at the very far end of the first table near where lunch was served. When we got closer to them, I was able to make out their features. They were both tall, probably around my height. One of them had bright blond hair and piercing blue eyes and the other guy had light brown hair and matching light brown eyes.
"Guys, allow me to introduce you to Phil." I smiled, trying not to show my nervousness about meeting new people. "I'm going to be his aid for the rest of the year."
"Sounds pretty sweet dude." The blond one said to Dan as he extended his hand out to me. "I'm Grayson by the way."
I smiled and shook his hand. The other guy introduced himself as Lucas.
"Hello boys."
I looked up and saw a girl with black hair and purple tips. She sat down next to Dan and instantly grabbed ahold of his hand.
"Cat, this is Phil. I'm going to be his aid for the rest of the year so he'll sit with us from now on." Dan nodded towards me before making eye contact with me. "Phil, this is Cat. She's my girlfriend."
She smiled and gave me a small wave with her free hand. I waved back.
"What do you want me to get you for lunch?" Dan asked me as our table was called up.
"Chicken nuggets."
"You got it."
When Dan came back, he put my lunch in front of me.
It was all chicken nuggets.
"Dan, where's the other stuff?" I asked him.
"All you asked for was chicken nuggets." He shrugged. "And I followed through with your request, didn't I?"
He managed to get a laugh out of me. "Dan, you are.... something, that's for sure."
*****
"Yes! School's finally over!" Dan cried as everyone began racing out of the classroom so that they could get home as quickly as possible. "Now to hurry up so I can catch the bus!"
"Well, hopefully your elevator superpowers don't fail you." I smirked.
"Hopefully." He put his stuff into his backpack and carried mine. I had to admit that that was a really good system. We stopped by his locker first since it was on the first floor and it wasn't that far away from our last class of day.
"So. Much. Homework!" Dan groaned as he stuffed his backpack with three large textbooks. "My back's going to be broken by the end of the year!"
I laughed as I began making my way to the elevator. "Dan! I need your powers!"
He pushed the button and immediately dropped his backpack when we entered the elevator. He groaned when he had to put it on his back.
"My locker's not that far." I laughed as I turned the corner and entered my locker combination.
"Sure feels like it." Dan said. "And of course we have the same homework so I'll have to carry two heavy ass backpacks!"
"You can do it hunchback." I told him as I grabbed my red notebook and put it in my lap.
"You better hope I can."
*****
"Oh Phil! How was your first day back?"
"Great." I smiled at Brenda, who was waiting for me right outside. "There's someone I want you to meet."
"Are we there yet?" Dan groaned as he sat both of our backpacks down on the ground.
"Oh, who's this?"
"This is Dan." I smiled as I looked back at him. "He's my aid for the rest of the school year."
"Well, it's great to meet you Dan."
"You...too..." He was out of breath from using his elevator superpowers. And also from carrying out backpacks.
"No!" He cried as he watched the buses leave. "I missed the bus!"
"Well, I can give you a ride home to your place."
"Actually, can he come over so we can do homework together?"
"Only if it's okay with his parents."
"Yeah, it'll be okay." Dan nodded. "They're at work and they always let me go out as long as I'm back in time for dinner."
"Well, you can come over then."
I'll admit it. I was nervous about having Dan over. Not only because we had only met that day and for all he knew, I could be a crazy serial rapist or something, but also because I hadn't had a friend over or even hung out with a friend for years.
Actually, I've never hung out with a friend outside of school.
I tried not to make my nervousness so obvious but I'm pretty sure that I was failing because I'm just bad at hiding nervousness. But I'm good at hiding any other emotion, especially sadness. I had been hiding depression for most of my life.
*****
"This is my room." I said proudly as we entered it. I watched as Dan inspected every single inch of it. His eyes immediately went to my dream list on my door when he saw it.
"I have one of these too." He told me.
"Really?" I was surprised.
He nodded. "Thought I was the only one."
"Me too." Silence soon fell between us. "Hey, let's get the homework out of the way."
"Yeah, good idea." He agreed. "We'll need some music to help us get through it."
"I agree. What kind of music do you like? We'll play whatever you like."
"You can pick."
"I insist. You're the guest at my house after all."
"Well, if you truly insist..." He paused. "Play some Muse."
I immediately felt a huge grin on my face forming. "That's my favorite band!"
"Mine too!" He was shocked that we had similar tastes in music. "Dude, that's so awesome! We have the same favorite band!"
"This is so awesome!"
****
We may have gotten off track and just listened to Muse over and over again instead of doing our homework. And I'll admit that I was sad when Dan had to go.
"I have to go or else my parents will kill me." He was shoving all of his books into his backpack. "At least we got one assignment done and found out that we have the same favorite band."
"Yeah, that was pretty great." I smiled. "I'll see you tomorrow right?"
"You better believe you will." He waved goodbye before closing the door.
"He seems like such a nice boy." Brenda smiled as she stepped into the room after he left.
"From what I've seen, yes. He's very nice."
I think I might have just found a friend.
