Chapter Twelve
Maya's POV
"Toiletries?"
"Check."
"Dress for reunion?"
"Check."
"I think that's all we need." Priyanka said as she zipped up my suitcase. The apartment was being rented out and the new tenants were moving in this weekend. I looked around the apartment one last time. It had all my memories in it.
"Hey, I know you are sad to leave this place but you can come back anytime!" Vikram said from behind as we looked at the Toronto horizon from the huge glass window. When I first moved in here five years ago, I was skeptical about the window because I thought it would be unsafe but Vikram never left anything half finished so he got the whole window bulletproof and all other kinds of proof.
I was to search for an apartment there after staying at my parent's house for a few days. Vikram and Priyanka would also visit their families and get some unfinished errands there and come back here after they were convinced that I was ok.
Like I said, they were the overprotective parent type.
"Let's hit the hay for tonight. Our flight is early tomorrow so we need to get some sleep." Priyanka said. We went to our respective rooms and fell asleep.
Or tried to.
I could hear Vikram's soft snores from the next room as I tossed and turned in my own bed. The feeling of dread filled me up to the brim and I was feeling nervous and jittery. The reunion was tomorrow.
Yes, it was Vikram's brilliant idea to get the cheapest priced tickets just a few hours away from the reunion. Even Priyanka couldn't change his mind. We were landing in Seattle at 2 and the reunion was at 7, at Four Seasons, the fanciest hotel in Seattle. Just the thought of it sent me into a flurry of jitters.
I reached over and picked up the chest, a Pandora's box of sorts and opened it. I reached inside and pulled out the photo that I was looking at earlier this week. I studied Ved's face, tracing the sharp jawline, his twinkling eyes and his smiling mouth. I memorized every curve and hollow of his face, tearing up at the thought that after six years, I would see him.
I would see my worst nightmare.
After finally falling asleep, the next morning, I packed away the chest in one of my suitcases and loaded everything in the rental car we were taking to the airport. I looked out at the peeking sun across the skyline and let the cold wind whip at my face.
"Mayo, get inside! You'll catch cold!" Vikram said.
"Vikky! Calm down." I said, calling him by the nickname that he hated so much.
"Do not call me that." he growled.
"Oh calm down Ikky!"Priyanka joined in the teasing. We continued our cheerful banter until we reached the airport. After checking in and a long security check, we had breakfast and boarded the plane.
The long plane later, I stepped down in Seattle, the jitters back and fiercer than ever. Then Vikram and Priyanka took each of my arms. I took a deep breath.
"You are going to be fine." Vikram reassured. We hailed a cab and drove to Priyanka's house first.
"Bye Pri. See you at 5." I said, giving her a hug.
"Take care." Vikram said and kissed the side of her head before she left the car. After she took her bags, the driver drove to the familiar neighborhood Vikram and I grew up in.
"Are you ready for this?" Vikram asked.
"I think so." I said, giving his hand a squeeze. We got off the cab and Vikram helped me with my bags. I rang the doorbell and the door flew open to see an ecstatic Paati.
"My child is back!" she said grabbing Vikram and hugging him. I swatted Vikram away.
"Paati!" I whined.
"I'm just kidding." she said and hugged me. I hugged her back tightly. Then my mom came in view.
"Mayuuu!" she said pinching my cheeks. "You look beautiful!"
"Thanks ma." I said sincerely because I knew that she meant it. Then my dad came and helped Vikram with the bags.
"Kay Mayo, I'll be here at 6:15 to pick you and Priyu up for the reunion." he said.
"What reunion?" My grandmother asked.
"You didn't tell them?" Vikram asked.
"Not now Vikky..." I hissed under my breath.
"We are going to our high school reunion." Vikram burst out.
"Vikrammmm!" I groaned.
"Why do you want to meet those horrible people?" My dad asked.
"I need to move on dad and I can't just let that keep haunting me." I reasoned with him.
"I think she's right. Why don't you just let her go?" my mom said softly.
"I just can't bear to see you hurt again Maya." my dad said.
"Uncle, I assure you that Priyanka and I will always be at her side the whole time." Vikram said.
"If that is your wish Maya, then go. Have fun." My dad said with a smile. I thanked him and bade good-bye to Vikram. I ran upstairs into my room which I hadn't seen in a year and lied down on the bed. And before I knew it, my room opened with a bang.
"Mayo! Rise and shine darling! It's time to get dressed!" Priyanka walked in, bringing in a bag full of make-up and styling tools. I sat up on my bed and yawned. I looked at the time.
"Ugh, It's 5 already? It feels like I just fell asleep." I groaned, stretching as I stood up from the bed.
"God Girl, go take a shower!" Priyanka said, shoving me inside the bathroom. Ten minutes later, I walked out in a black tank top and black yoga pants. I sat down on the chair Priyanka had brought up and patiently waited as she styled my hair.
Once she was done, I looked at it. It was gorgeous. She had curled my hair loosely and had pulled back my bangs with a purple and black sparkly clip. Then I wore my dress, which was a purple full length and sleeved gown. The neck and chest were covered in silver rhinestones and it looked beautiful. Then I did my make-up as Priyanka did her own hair. She wore a similar gown, except it was in red. I did her make-up and we both accessorized in the same silver stone earrings and black clutches.
In short, we looked really good.
Paati agreed with us. She took a million selfies with us (Paati had grown an obsession for selfies after I left for college) and made us pose as she took various pictures of us.
"I have to put this on Facebook!" Paati said. My grandmother had a Facebook account and I didn't. What was the world becoming to?
The doorbell rang sharp at 6:15. Vikram walked in and saw the two of us. His jaw, well, pretty much hit the floor as he tripped on the carpet to reach us.
"Oww!" he said. Priyanka and I helped him up.
"Do you really want to leave the house looking like that?" Vikram asked.
"Why? We look fine." Priyanka said.
"It may result in a lot of sore bruises on the jaw, that's why." Vikram said, laughing as we posed for the camera. A million and one photos later, we finally got into Vikram's car and drove there. I looked outside at the darkening Seattle sky and remembered the moments I had here before.
When we reached there, my heart thudded loudly and I feared for what was to come. Vikram came in the back and took my hand, his already encased in Priyanka.
"Let me escort you girls." he said. We walked in a formal fashion inside the hotel. As soon as I walked in, I could see that there were dancers dancing on the stage. There were people from my classes in high school sipping drinks by the bar.
"Hey Hanna!" I said to a familiar face from my precalculus class. She was really nice to me and often supported me when Aryan was being mean to me.
"I am so sorry, I don't recognize you. You are?" she asked me.
"Hanna! It's me, Maya Srinivasan?" I said. She shrieked and engulfed me in a hug.
"Oh my god Maya! You have changed so much! Boy, you clean up well girl!" she said.
"You look gorgeous too." I said grinning.
"OMG, the hottest couple from high school! Vikky and Priya! Are you guys still going strong! And is that a ring on your finger Priyanka? That is so cute!" Hanna gushed at the sight of Priyanka and Vikram hand in hand.
"Hey Hanna! Nice seeing you here." Vikram said, hugging her casually. He knew her as well since we were in the same precalculus class.
"Hanna! The singer says that he's caught with some flu and can't make it!" the DJ ran up and said to Hanna.
"Oh sorry guys! I am the event manager for today and I have to run now. If Aryan's mad then my career ends." she said. At the mention of Aryan, my throat choked up.
"Some people never change." Priyanka said, her voice dripping with scorn. We looked around the party, saying hi to old friends. There had been no sight of Ved or my previous bullies. Suddenly Hanna approached me.
"Maya, I need your help." she said.
"What is it Hanna?" I asked her.
"I've heard you sing...so could you fill in for the singer that was supposed to show up today?" she asked.
"Hanna, are you crazy! You very well know that I despise Aryan. Why the hell will I sing in front of him that too in his event!" I asked her.
"I am aware but if you don't do this, my career will be destroyed. Maya please, I am begging you." she said, grabbing my hands.
"But, I don't know what to sing..." I trailed off.
"It's a Bollywood singer so any Hindi song should be ok." she said.
"Are you sure you wanna do this?" Priyanka butted in.
"She won't do this. You know how she feels about Aryan!" Vikram said, angrily.
"I'll do it on one condition." I said suddenly. Three pairs of bewildered eyes faced me.
"What?" Hanna asked.
"My name should not be announced. I'll sing and then leave. Only some people know that I am Maya and I don't want Aryan, Nicholas, Caleb, Wong and....and..." I trailed off, unable to say the name of the person that had been driving me crazy for the past week.
"I promise. Thank you so much! I'll just announce you as the Bollywood singer's name that I had originally booked." she said.
"When am I on?" I asked.
"Uh...would you kill me if I said now?" Hanna asked.
"Hanna! Ugh fine. I'll go." I said. I stepped on stage, pulling up my gown slightly so I could walk without tripping on my gown. People instantly started whispering. The announcer came and announced my name. I scanned the auditorium randomly until I found them.
My worst fears.
A/N: Hey Guys! How was the chapter? Sorry if it was a little boring. It was meant to be a filler. I promise that the next one is going to be nothing short of drama. Please keep voting and commenting!
