Things I Never Said
"Thank you for the wonderful night Mr Meyer." Says the last guest leaving my home.
I look around. It's not as trashy as a college party would have been. But now it needs tidying up and furniture needs to return.
I lock the door and I head to my car.
The road , the music booming from my stereo and the beautiful dawn sky . Yet all I can focus on is the lady I met during the Gala.
Absolutely regal.
Her brown eyes, and big curly brown hair. Her face oh lord. Its gorgeous. But when she spoke. Oh lord.
"It has, and I see you've met..." I begin but I realise that I dont know her name.
"Gemima." She whispers.
Her voice sends shockwaves all through my body.
I should use some cute nickname right? So that its persuasive and believable that i am her boyfriend.
"My Gem." I say.
And she smiles. Gosh my heart just dropped down to my arse.
I just cant get it out of my mind. Oh and she has a little boy. I'm actually keen in meeting him. Super excited.
I park in the private parking. And I head up.
"Oh the Gala is over?" Charlotte asks the moment I walk in. She and her boyfriend are watching some show.
"Sup Scott?" I greet.
"Yo Nate." He greets back.
"Yea the Gala is over." I tell her seating on the barstool.
"Tell me all about it." She pushes herself up from the couch and towards me.
"I met someone." I saw smiling.
"Oh, what's her name? Where is she from? What does she do? Tell me everything!" She says as she plops on the barstool next to me.
"Her name is Gemima. I dont know where she is from. She is a journalist and a personal assistant. And she is the most beautiful woman I've ever laid my eyes on." I say in a dreamy tone.
"Oh, you must like her alot." She says.
"Yea, I ask her on a date . Coming up on Monday evening. " I tell her and she claps her arms excitedly.
I retire to my bed. It's been a long night. For the first time in months. I sleep with a jolly smile.
The weekend flies by like a breeze and I'm back at my office. The relaxing view of the city skyline.
I look at my watch. Twelve PM.
I have to get to Arraine's headquarters. She recommended someone for me .
The drive is almost exhausting. I'm typing away on my laptop. I have a virtual meeting at six PM and I have to type what I want my secretary to put as the agenda.
The car comes to a halt and I look out the window. Its Arraine's company.
I step out. Thanking my driver.
I walk into the building and immediately feel the stares of the people. Some of the photographers stop taking the pictures and stare.
I bump into a short young lady.
"Good afternoon. Umh, where would Arraine's office be?" I ask.
She points towards a bright red door.
I walk towards it and I knock twice before entering.
There she sits. Just like I remember her from my childhood. Little Ari. My father's best friend's daughter.
"Hey Ari." I greet.
"Hey Nate." She hugs me with one arm.
"So , when am I meeting this designer?" I ask her. She smiles. Her teeth look exactly they way they were when we were younger.
She had braces, she removed them on her first year of college. And her teeth have been like that since. She is about eight years older than me.
"Sure. But first how are you?" She asks as she stands.
"I'm alright. How are you? And how's Travis?" I ask. She smiles.
"I'm great. And Travis is doing good, he left for a meeting in Paris about a week ago." She says as she leads me to the office of the said designer.
"Be patient with her. Shes about two years younger than you. And dont be mean Nate?" She says.
"I wont Ari, I promise." I tell her.
She knocks then tells the lady that I've arrived.
"Come in . Mr Meyer this is Miss Summer." She introduces and the very brown eyes that have been haunting mr hypnotise me.
"Gem?" My voice asks, longingly.
"Nate?" She asks and her voice melts me.
"You two know each other?" Arraine asks surprised.
"Yes. I'll be doing the interview now." I tell Ari. Hoping that she leaves.
"You didnt tell me you were a designer . Or that you worked for Ari." I tell her.
"I told you that I love design. But I didnt think it was necessary for you to know that I work Arraine. " she says.
I might pinch myself just to see if this is real life. She looks even better without make up.
Infact, there are no words to explain how amazing she is. She looks absolutely gorgeous.
Her phone rings and she flinches before she answers it.
"Can I get this?" She asks. I nod.
"Hello?" She says in a hushed tone.
Seconds pass before she says the next thing. Shock covers her face.
"How can that be? I paid them." She defends.
Another seconds passes before she bows her head in defeat and then sighs. Her index and thumb press against her nose.
"Fine, I'll deal with it when I get home." She says. Then ends the call.
"What's the matter?" I ask.
"My son's daycare says I haven't paid in three months. And I have been paying. I swear I know I have been paying. They say that I have to pay three thousand dollar by tomorrow or my son mustn't come back.
I'm fucked. I know I paid, I gave Jeremy the money and he said he paid." She says the last part to herself.
I'm thinking this Jeremy guy knocked her off.
I have to help. But I cant pay the bill for her. She'll think that I'm buying her.
"I have someone who wouldnt mind taking care of your son for you. And I know she wont ask for too much money." I tell her.
"Oh, who would that be?" She asks.
"My sister Charlotte. She loves kids. Wouldnt mind staying with the little guy." I tell her.
"Can I meet her first?" She asks.
"Okay, how about instead of the date. You just come over to my penthouse. I'll make you dinner then you can meet her." I ask.
She smiles then nods.
"But we'll have to pick up my son first?" She asks. I nod then she smiles.
"Oh, and you got the job." I say and she smiles.
If she is the one who designs this office for real. Then she is definitely a good designer.
I walk out of the office after exchanging number for me to be able to pick her up.
I dial Charlotte on my way to the hotel.
"Hello?" She answers. "Are you okay?"
"More than okay. Guess who the person I was interviewing was?" I ask.
"Who?" She persists.
"Gemima." I say and she makes a shrieking sound.
"Okay, we'll talk about this later. I got you a job." I tell her.
"A job?" She asks.
"Yea, she needs a baby sitter. So I recommended you. She wants to meet you. Please take the job? Then we'll see her more." I beg. She sighs then says okay. I'm excited.
Damn I haven't been this excited since Elizabeth.
