City Of Love
"Okay. So what you're telling me is that I have to come to New York right now?" I ask Nathan.
He has got to be kidding me.
Explaining it to Arraine, she seems to understand because she simply says. "Oh go right on darling." She said.
So here I am in a cab to New York. He said he's still at work so when I get to the house I should just call him.
Arriving at the large mansion. Memories of the first time Nate and I met flood my mind. We actually spent the entire night together. No words can explain how much fun I had with him.
I knock and a few seconds later, an elderly lady who looks like Charlotte answers.
"Afternoon can I help?" She asks, investigating my face.
Then to my surprise Ethan comes running and hugs me.
"Mommy! Mommy!" He yells.
"Oh you must be Gemma." She says giving me a knowing smile.
"Yes. And you are..." I ask. She smiles letting me in.
"Mrs Hart. You can call me mom." She smiles. She looks a little young to be parent of Nathan.
And also ,her eyes and hair colour dont match with that of Nathan. But who knows maybe he looks like his father.
I walk further into what I remember was the ball room. It now looks like an art gallery. It smells fresh, my eyes land on the balcony where Nate and I met.
I smile.
"Dear would you like to help me at the greenhouse while we wait for Nate?" She asks. Leading me upstairs.
Ethan must've climbed up already because I dont see him anywhere here.
The house looks even better in the daylight. The entire back window of the kitchen and dining area is glass. Maybe I didnt notice because that night it was covered or something.
You can see Nathan's backyard from here. A few feet from the house there is a large lake, and further to the right there is a large greenhouse. There are beautiful flowers from I can make out from my distance.
"Hey Gemma." I hear.
"Hey Charlotte. How are you?" I ask her.
She smiles and tells me all about the angel Ethan has been. She also tells me about the relationship he has with Nathan, as if they've known each other forever.
Which reminds me.
"I have to tell Nate that I'm here." I tell her. Disturbing her from saying whatever she had intended to say
"Sure. Ethan has to bath right now." She says.
The phone rings for almost a second before he answers.
"Gem?" He says. His voice is laced with panick.
"Nate, hi. I'm so sorry I-" he cuts me off.
"Are you alright, are you safe? Do you want me to pick you up? Talk to me Gem. Did they do something to y-" he rambles. But I have to stop him before he skips himself into a panic attack.
"I'm alright Nate." I tell him. I hear him release a breath of relieve.
"I got to your house almost thirty minutes ago. Met your mom and then had a talk with Charlie. I forgot to call." I tell him.
"Oh, okay I'm on my way. The meeting is almost over." He says.
We say our salutations and he ends the call.
Mrs Hart takes me over to the greenhouse. Offering me gloves and an apron to work.
"This is a Jade Vine. It's a rare flower. My mother used to adore it, we'd see it on televisions and hear about it. It's my favourite too now." She tells me.
She points at the necklace like structure with greenish-blue hue. The first I've ever seen. Its gorgeous.
"I have to water it everyday. At least four times. Its native to tropical and rain forests so it needs as much water as possible to survive." She continues.
"My favorite is a sun flower. I know it's nothing fancy but I used to go to this vine yard with my mom. And they had a little section with sun flowers.
I'd stare at them until the sun set. My mom used to say that it's why our last name is Summer.
She loved daffodils though. Because she used to say that they're a happy colour and it's all she needs. " I realise that I might have over shared.
I'm saved by Nathan walking in.
"Evening ladies." He says. First kissing his mother's cheek then my forehead. Which leaves a tingling feeling.
His cheeks are a light shade of pink which he ignores. If I had a little less melanin than I do now, then I'd have also turned pink.
"Let's go." Is all he says before I find myself on the road.
My mind is focused on the soft Erykah Badu music playing in his car than I barely realise that Nathan has stopped the car.
I brush my curls off my face and I prepare myself . I look out the window and I see it. The building is tall. Like very. It's very bland, no landscaping. But I guess that's why I'm here.
We walk in and the room smells freshly of paint.
"I want this to be the foyer and reception. You see that wall?" He points at the left wall .
"I want that to be a focal point. The receptionist desk will be right infront of it. So I want it to make a statement. Maybe have the hotel name behind it. You'll think of something.
Now for the colour scheme I want you to go freestyle. But not too ordinary and bland. Bring a new twist you know? Make the staff want to come to work.
Next we'll go see the kitchen. Elevator or stairs?" He asks.
"Elevator. " I'm not climbing no stairs. Not today.
The elevator goes about a floor up before it stops. It opens up to a room that barely has walls. There is wall to ceiling glass all over. And then the fourth wall has a wall.
Its plain, it has a large and arched doorway. Next to the doorway is what seems to be a bar.
"This is the restaurant level. Have you ever designed a restuarant kitchen ? But I trust you. " he says.
I nod along as I take notes on my phone.
"Okay, and then the floors going further up are suites. There are about thirty if nof fourty five floors in total on this building . What do you think?" He asks.
"Its massive. I love the visions I have for it. But I need to know the style you want to go for this one. Eclectic style, classic, morden , contemporary, farmhouse . The list goes on." I say.
"I'm thinking, bring Paris to New York ." He says.
"Oh, I like that. So traditional French or -" I begin.
"I'm taking you to Paris." He says.
"What?" My mouth dries. My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.
"I'm taking you to Paris. You know... to umh... get inspiration?" He says.
"When?" I ask. Feeling excitement boiling inside of me.
"Tomorrow." He says and my eyeballs almost pop out.
"Excuse me?" I ask.
"I think you should check that hearing problem of yours. I said TO-MO-RROW. " he says.
And I almost fly of my chair.
I gotta pack, I have to get my passport. I have so much to do.
"I'll pick you up tomorrow at noon." He says.
