Chapter Twenty One: It's a Wedding!
Anna and Jess were putting the finishing touches together outside, ensuring not a single petal was out of place. They had a plethora of chairs set up, enough for both of their large families, and a multitude of friends from around town who they'd invited to share this day with them. The two women wore matching sapphire blue dresses and perilous high heels. Jess' normal waves were intricately piled onto her head, pinned in place, and Anna's flowed down in soft curls over her shoulders, bangs pinned back in a braid.
"I can't believe it's already here, it's already May, and they're getting married!" Anna cried in a sing-song voice, replacing a flower on a row of garland hanging off the chairs. Jess laughed exuberantly and straightened the long white carpet out.
"I know! Has anyone seen Charlie?" As if she'd been called, Charlie came waltzing up the path towards the beautiful ceremony area.
"Right here bitches!" She wore a wide smirk, her high heels dangling off one of her fingers. Anna sighed and Jess laughed, walking over.
"These? Yeah, they go on your feet you barbarian." Charlie laughed and swatted away Jess' hand. Spirits were higher than ever that day, for everyone, but the nerves that surrounded the two grooms-to-be were much higher.
"I cannot believe I'm doing this, Sammy. Oh God, I'm going to be sick. I'm going to throw up, on my fucking wedding day. I can't go out there, Sam. Call it off, call the whole damn thing off!" Sam laughed and pulled his older brother into a hug, clapping him on the back a few times.
"Deep breaths, Dean. You're going to be absolutely fine. I'll go grab you some water, just sit and try not to make a run for it." Dean nodded numbly and leaned against the counter, staring at himself in the hotel mirror. His eyes were wide and wild, his hair cleanly spiked up, a blue tie the same shade as Cas' eyes tied firmly around his neck. He breathed deeply, not even hearing the hotel room's door open and swing shut.
"Not getting cold feet, are you?" His father's voice made him turn, relaxing slightly.
"I'm terrified Dad, so fucking scared. How'd you do this?" John chuckled and leaned on the doorframe to the bathroom.
"I just thought about your mother, that after all this hectic planning and this crazy day, that I'd get to spend every other moment with her. And it didn't matter, after that. I just had to wait for her, at the end of the aisle, and when I saw her- she was so beautiful- everything else fell away." Dean smiled a bit and nodded, thinking of Cas waiting for him, probably panicking the same was Dean was right now. He let out an airy laugh and smiled more. He was about to marry Castiel.
"Michael... Michael!" Mike swung around the doorway into the hotel room, wearing a pristine black suit with a shiny green tie.
"What's up Cassie?" Castiel was pacing across the hotel room, fidgeting with the cuffs of his black suit jacket.
"I'm going to pass out. I can't think straight, I can't do this." Michael laughed and leaned on the wall. Lucifer and Gabe walked in, Gabe prancing over to his older brother.
"Hold still or I'll mess this up." Carefully, he tucked a perfectly folded green pocket square into Cas' breast pocket. "There. And I've only been gone 10 minutes and you already messed up your bow tie. Jesus, Cas. Keep it together." Gabe straightened the green bow tie and fixed his suit jacket. "You look flawless. You ready?" Castiel shook his head, and in a chorus, he three brother's laughed.
"Come on, we should get down there." Lucifer looked at Mike, sharing a glance that Castiel didn't miss, but didn't have time to dissect. "Gabe, we can trust that you'll get Castiel out there in one piece, right?" Gabe saluted them with a straight face before they left the room.
"Okay Cassie, let's go. I won't make you cover your eyes till we get to the lobby." Cas nodded and followed Gabe out to the elevator. The deal was this: Neither groom could see the set up for the ceremony- or each other- until the moment of. They'd both be put in place, backs to each other, eyes closed, until everyone else was seated and the ceremony could begin. It was the only way to be fair, they'd reasoned. When they reached the lobby, Cas closed his eyes, covering them with one hand and letting Gabe take his other arm, leading him along a path. He could hear muffled voices and joyous laughter around him, making his nerves relax a bit as Gabe got him into place. Gabe tapped his lips- a little reminder to stay quiet- and let his arm go, taking his spot beside Cas.
Sam pressed a finger to Dean's lips quickly, and Dean nodded once. No speaking, no ruining the illusion, no letting Cas know he was only a few feet away. It took everything in him to stay put, to not turn around and pull his soon-to-be husband close, let all the nerves melt away. He kept his eyes shut, taking comfort in the presence of Sam's body close to him. He heard chattering around him, in the front row- where their families sat- and faint whispers throughout the ceremony around them. Suddenly, a hush fell over them. Dean breathed deeply, in and out, counting the smells around him. His on cologne, Sammy's cologne, the floral scent of blue orchids and Calla Lilly, the white and green roses, and one scent that stood out above them all. He hadn't been at the bakery all week, yet Dean could smell rich coffee and cologne, a few feet away, and his nerves disappeared in a second. Cas was there, right there, waiting to turn to him, to marry him. A smile spread across his face, and Sam nudged him.
Dean opened his eyes to the world around him, taking it all in, the bright flowers, the wedding arch that was to his left, Sammy, standing, beaming a few feet away, and his family, the Winchesters and Novaks, all smiling proudly up at them. He was not allowed to turn fully, just enough to watch the aisle as Anna and William walked up. He smiled, she really was beautiful, and William let her go stand next to Gabe up at the front. Jess walked up, lead by John, and took her spot next to Sam, smiling at Dean as she passed. Charlie and Lucifer came up the aisle, a proud smirk on his face, a smile bright enough to blind on her own. The music drifted around them as Jo and Ash came up the aisle. Ash's hair was pulled back politely, and the man cleaned up nice. Jo was the picture of stunning, blonde hair gleaming in a high bun as Ash let her go stand next to Jess. Michael brought up the rear, following closely behind a prancing Sarai as she spread soft petals along the aisle, giggling with glee. Everyone's own soft laughter broke the silence as Sarai came up to the front before Michael lead her to sit with him and William. When everyone was settled, the ceremony began.
"We are gathered here today to celebrate the marriage of one Dean Winchester, and one Castiel Novak..." Sam and Gabe nudged their brother's allowing them to fully turn to face each other. Castiel couldn't breathe. Dean was gorgeous, his eyes wide and alive, taking in Castiel before him. His suit was pressed, tie tucked tightly in his suit jacket, hands folded over each other in front of him.
Dean couldn't move. Castiel was as beautiful as ever, bow tie perched below his jaw, in front of his throat, and his eyes shone brilliantly in the sunlight. Dean was sure he'd never been more in love. When the time came, he spoke clearly, clearer than he thought possible.
"I do." Castiel lit up in front of him as Dean spoke. Cas cleared his throat quietly when it was his turn and spoke in an emotion laden, confident voice.
"I do." They listened patiently and when it was time, Dean took both Cas' hands in his own, staring into those gorgeous blue orbs as he spoke.
"Cas." The name rolled off his tongue, tasting sweet. "When I met you, I didn't expect anything to come out of it. I thought you were stuck up and rude, and even so, I couldn't get you out of my head." There were soft chuckles around him and he smiled, eyes never leaving Cas. "You got under my skin, you shattered everything I thought I knew. You gave me purpose, a reason to work hard, to make you proud. I've wanted nothing more since the day I met you, than to make you smile, make you the happiest I'm capable of, for the rest of our lives. You taught me how to love, how to be loved. You gave me a home, arms to collapse into after a long day, memories to make, and look back on. In the small increment of time we've been together, I've lived more than ever before. You are my angel, my love, and I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life cherishing moments with you." Cas bit back tears and laughed softly, smiling at his lover.
"Dean, in this past year and a half, I've grown so much, learned so much about life, love, and myself. This time has given me everything I didn't know I was missing. You've given me undeniable love, kindness, compassion. You've taught me how it feels to relax, to live out loud, to settle down but never settle for. As my grease monkey, you taught me it's okay to get dirty, to work hard, and that it won't matter because when I come home, everything else will melt away to give me you. I want you to constantly be reminded how worthy you are, how loved you are. And every single time you look down at these hands," Castiel lifted Dean's hands to his lips, ghosting them across his knuckles, "these hands that have worked so hard for others, I want you to know that you have someone here to work hard for you now, for us, every day and night, for the rest of our lives." Dean's eyes were leaking, tears streaming silently down his cheeks, the smile on his face bright and so in love. Castiel smiled in return, and they exchanged rings, sliding them into place on each other's hands, where they would stay now and forever.
"By the authority invested in me, I now pronounce you husbands. You may now kiss." Dean leaned in, capturing Cas' lips in his own, one hand cupping his cheek, other gripping his hand tightly in his own. Cas let Dean take his breath, his will, let himself give over to his lover, free hand, running down his side, pulling him closer. Applause erupted in front of them and reluctantly, they pulled back, turning to face those closest to them, smiles plastered on both their tear streaked faces.
They arrived at the reception, full of joy and happiness. They spent the time milling around, taking congratulations, but when Cas caught sight of his brother's he froze. Standing off to the side, waiting patiently, were Mike, Luci, and Naomi, his mother. She looked healthier than he'd seen since he was a child, and he told Dean he'd be back momentarily. This was one thing he needed to face alone first. When Naomi caught sight of Cas, her smile lit up, eyes bright. She pulled him in, arms familiar and warm and Cas let himself break, crying into her shoulder, tears of surprise, relief, shock and love.
"We wanted to surprise you. Mom's been doing phenomenal, Cas. And she's been dying to see you. We convinced her to wait until now, to surprise you." Cas laughed through his tears, pulling Naomi closer to him and smiling over her shoulder at his brothers.
"Oh Castiel, I've missed you to pieces. I'm so proud of you, so, so proud..." He smiled and touched his mother's cheek, pressing a kiss to her forehead.
"Come on, let's go sit, you should officially meet my husband." The word was foreign, but slid off his tongue effortlessly, as if it'd been waiting at bay since the second he'd laid eyes on the Winchester to come out.
"So, Castiel, what's been going on since you graduated?" Cas smiled and sipped at his champagne, sitting across from his mom, Dean next to him. They'd moved on from initial introductions, and now had time to talk until it was time to cut the cake.
"I got on at the university, teaching English. But now I'm only doing it part time, and I'm working with Gabe here at the bakery too. It's really good, mom. Things are good." She smiled and took his hand, rubbing the back of it soothingly. "When did you... I mean..." she laughed softly at his lack of words and shook her head.
"I've been going to therapy for the past year or so, I told Michael not to tell you, or the others, just in case it didn't work. But I'm... I'm doing a lot better. Castiel, I owe you a sincere apology-" He held his hand up, shaking his head.
"Not now, not here. Right now, it's time to cut the cake." He smiled widely at his mother before turning to Dean. "If you get any on this suit I'll be filing." Dean laughed lightheartedly and stood with his husband as they walked over to the table on the other side of the room. Sam held a video camera, making sure to capture everything. Gabriel had designed the cake, it stood in several tiers, decorated with blue orchids and white roses with green baby's breath. It was gorgeous, and two tiny grooms stood on top of it. Everyone waited with bated breath as they shared the knife and made the first cut into the cake, everyone erupting into cheers and applause. Dean smeared some icing on Cas' cheek, being rewarded with a gasp and his own smatter of icing on his jaw. They shared a soft, polite kiss and let Gabe and Anna serve cake. When the sky slowly filtered from the bright blue into hazy twilight, it was time to share their first dance. The outside dance floor was alight with soft white lights, and when the music started, Dean and Cas held each other close, letting everything around them fall away. Nothing mattered now, or ever, as long as they were able to hold each other through it all. Cas knew his entire life had been shattered barely a year and a half ago, torn apart by a stunning mechanic and his smoldering green eyes. Dean was fully aware that his little English professor had gotten under his skin, took hold of everything and flipped it around, but it suited Dean alright. He had everything he didn't know he wanted, all in sapphire eyes and warm hands, promises of a happy future and a plethora of memories to be made. And as he stared into those baby blues, underneath the soft moonlight spilling out it's silvery glow over them, he knew he'd never want for anything again. He had Castiel, and the rest didn't matter.
