chapter twenty nine

It's mid-concert. I don't know if I've seen a crowd as alive as they are at this very moment. Screaming and shooting fills the air around us. I can feel sweat dripping from my forehead. Adrenaline steaming through my veins. It's the rush of performing.

We're finishing up a song, and the crowd is singing it for us. My microphone is lifted into the air, allowing for their voices to be picked up. My breathing is uneven, but the smile on my face and light in my eyes refuses to dim.

I turn to look at Laurance and bring my microphone up to my mouth again. "What do you say we turn up the energy?" I say, giving him a small wink that causes his mouth to open.

"Y/N, the winking is my job," he laughs, grabbing his microphone from his hand so he can walk over to me. Laurance's arm is slung around my shoulder lazily, and I look down to watch our guitar. I don't need them breaking or clashing carelessly into each other. "But I prefer something I can jump recklessly to over something that makes me fall asleep on stage any day."

Alex peaks her head up and laughs at this. "You wrote that last song, stupid."

I shake my head at their sibling quarrel and turn my head to Vylad. He seems to be enjoying himself in the background, his eyes darting back and forth from person to person as we speak. "Why don't we move along to the next song if you're so bored, Laurance?"

Laurance groans, "Ever since you got with my sister, you gang up on me! Even Y/N gangs up on me. It seems that I just can't win." He rolls his eyes at us, pouting as he goes back to his place.

Vylad starts us off with a made up drum melody and turns to Laurance, asking if that woke him up yet. It's like poking a sleeping bear with a stick.

Laurance gives in eventually, and this allows for us to start the song. Within the many Youtube videos there are of us online, I wouldn't be surprised if there were videos of Laurance Zvahl acting like a child.

It's about half way through the song when the sound of drumming suddenly stops. There's a scream, and the crown grows silent.

"Laurance, catch him!"

I nearly stumble over myself when I turn around to see what's gone wrong. Instruments carelessly dropped onto the ground as rushed feet run over to Vylad. My breathing goes unsteady once more as I try to make my way over to Vylad. I kneel on the floor beside him, placing my hand on his forehead.

"Vylad," I beg, my voice shaking. "Please wake up. Leo!"

The lights turn off around us, and people are being directed out of the building for privacy. Leo declares the concert is over, and 911 is called. Vylad isn't waking up. I can't wake him up.

We've been lucky enough that they're allowing all of us into the room at once. I'm the only one who is a part of the Ro'meave family, so it would've been us alone. The room is filled with an eerie silence. Vylad is sitting in the hospital staring back at us. The only noise in the room is the beeping of machines and the muffled sound of Leo's voice on the other end of the door. He's calling mom.

The door opens, and Leo steps in. He awkwardly places his phone into his back pocket and slouches into the chair near the bed. He places his head in his hands, mumbling into them. "Your mother is on her way. She's speeding through red lights as we speak."

Vylad and I lock eyes with one another. There's a sense of panic within his eyes. "I didn't mean to cause such trouble."

Leo looks over at him, dropping his hands onto his knees. "You didn't mean for this to happen Vylad, don't apologize for something you have no control over."

The room falls silent again. In order to get rid of the silence, Laurance reaches over to turn on the tv. He turns on a random channel for some form of sound, but no one pays attention to it.

A knock sounds on the door, and soon a doctor comes in. He's introduced himself to us once before, so he isn't new to us. He explains to Leo that he's taking Vylad out of the room in order to perform some tests on him. I look over to Vylad, but he seems to be calm.

I think to myself that this is all an act he's giving us to push away our fear. To cover up what fear he has so we don't know it's there. He could be screaming on the inside, cursing the world.

Vylad hasn't been one to get dreadfully sick. It's rare for me to even see him get a cold. I don't remember the last time he took a sick day.

Vylad kisses the back of Alex's hand, and I watch as they let go and he's wheeled out of the room. We're standing at this point, and Laurance pulls me into his chest. I can feel his hand securely placed on my hip, and his warmth radiates into my body.

Leo places his hand on my shoulder and leads me to a chair. He sits me down in a chair and tries to calm my worries down. Laurance takes off his jacket to put on my shaking figure. We're still in our clothes from the concert. Leo disappears into the hallway once again to gather more information and to call my mom once more.

What could possibly be going on?
