chapter one

It's the blinding lights and the screaming fans. It's the feeling of the microphone molding into my hand, and the sound of music flowing freely through my head. It's simply one word, and that word is amazing.

It feels like it all happened yesterday. As cliché as it is, I haven't gone back to school after our band had a break through. I've had a band for a little over two years now, and we never leace each other's sides. In the beginning we'd perform between two different garages, and the exception of sometimes it being basements.

Our band, The Phoenix's Flame, or even shortened to TPF, consists of brothers and sisters, as well as friends. There's only four of us, but it's always been this way since the beginning, and I wouldn't change it for the world.

I'm the lead vocals, but that doesn't mean I'm the main face in the band. I don't like it when you have a band, and people focus more on the lead singer then the rest of the and members. All the people in the band make it what it really is and not just that one face everybody would focus on.

I would like to say that I was the one who started it all, but it was a mutual idea for the most part. However, I can honestly say that I was the one who mentioned the idea of a band.

When it comes to me, I can sometimes be referred to someone who takes music and their actions more seriously than the other three. But, then there's the side of me who just fools around just to have fun.

We have Laurance, and he is the lead guitarist and oftentimes his vocals are heard in our songs. He's a flirt, and he has even had a few girlfriends from time to time, but I know he means well and treats them right. He's special like that, and he doesn't like to harm anyone. He usually means well.

Then there's Alex, the youngest in the group, and she's the bassist who constantly has her vocals heard in most of our songs. She's the sweetest person you could ever meet, and she has her heart on her sleeve, but she can also change into a totally different person in a snap if you try hard enough.

Lastly, there's Vylad. Not only is he my little brother, but he's the drummer who stills sings outloud over his drums in our songs. It's hard to sing while drumming, so I give him credit. He may be battling against me over who is more mature, or even battling against Alex on who is more adorable, or even who has more fangirls with Laurance, but we still love and care for him. He may not know that he's in competitions like these, but it's fine. We got him to pick up a pair of drum stick and learn how to use them, so I'm happy.

Sometimes in our free time when we're just messing around and not getting any progress down on writing our songs, we just sing random songs, or we try to teach each other how to play each other's instruments. It's funny watching other people getting frustrated when learning them, but when it comes to me it's a total different story. I only know how to play 'Hot Cross Buns' on Laurance's guitar, but otherwise that's about it.

However, I'm excited because tonight's a performance. I love it when the energy and adrenaline is coursing the air like a child's happiness in a candy store. It gets me hyped up, and it's an undescribable feeling.

There comes the time where you'll see a singer or somebody smile a certain smile that shows that they know that they really have made it, and that smile constantly takes over my lips.

Our manager, Leo, has brought in some people to video tape some things that happen behind stage before the performance tonight for the upcoming music video. I don't remember which song, but it must be one of our more meaningful songs.

It's almost show time, and I can hear the crowd chanting for us even if we're not on stage yet. I walk through the halls from our dressing room to backstage to see Laurance looking over his electric guitar. He smirks once he sees me, and he begins to play 'Hot Cross Buns'. I stifle a laugh and place a fake pout on my face. He goes back to looking over his guitar once I turn my body to see Vylad peaking out to crowd.

I walk over to him and smile. "Hey Vylad," I say to him as calm as I can.

Vylad turns to me and smiles brightly. "It's another full house!" He says enthusiastically while his eyes are bright with excitement.

I begin to smile as I feel a hand on my shoulder. I turn around to see Garroth standing with our parents and Zane.

Father isn't the biggest fan of Vylad and I being in the band because of some of the fanfictions Zane has showed him, but he's warming up to it. But sadly I know that that's only part of it.

Mother brings me into a hug and I can hear sniffles as Garroth joins into the hug and finds Vylad to bring him into it. Father pushes Zane into the hug and joins it himself.

"I'm so proud of you both," Mother says as she wipes a tear that falls down her cheek. She kisses both of our foreheads, and they wish us all good luck. This is a normal thing for them to do when this come to our concerts, but Zane is never happy with it.

Once they're out of sight I hear a grunt followed by a giggle to see Alex on Vylad's back grinning ear to ear as she punches the air with her left hand. She throws her head back laughing as Vylad stands up straight holding onto her thighs.

"You need to carry me onto stage V!" She says as she lays her arm over Vylad's chest and grips onto her right wrist.

"What about my drumsticks? Your bass guitar?!"

She brings her hand to her back pocket and pulls out Vylad's drumsticks. They could've broken in her back pocket but they didn't surprisingly. Sadly, this is only going to fuel her to do this again until the drumsticks break. She brings them in front of his face. "Right here!" She continues to hold onto the drumsticks and continues talking. "And they're not broken!"

There's an acoustic set we will be doing later on in the show she uses one of her favorite pics for. But if you ask Laurance about his pic, he'll tell you that it is lucky.

Laurance comes over to us and hands Alex her guitar, and she holds onto it. He turns to me and sighs dramatically. I suppose he saw my hopeful eyes and knows that I want a piggyback ride. He bends down a little and allows me access onto his back. I grab his guitar after I'm safe on top of his back, and I know that the people that Leo hired are stand right behind us filming everything we're doing.

I swing my legs back and forth and Laurance complains about it as I watch my black combat boots swing back and forth with my feet.

Most of the time I like to wear really comfortable, but fashionable outfits when on stage because of all the moving. I adjust my silver locket, and watch as it falls nicely on my loose dark green tank top. There's nothing I can do about my leather jacket, or my leggings with only one hand.

I look back smiling, and I wave at the camera. I look back over at Vylad and Alex to see Alex looks down at Vylad with her hair blocking the view of the sides of her face, and Vylad looking up. I found it adorable.

"I hate you," Vylad says, and Alex just smiles.

"I love you too."

It's time to go on stage and Laurance runs to center stage almost making me fall off in the process. I laugh once I grip onto him, and the crowd's cheer begins to get louder. Laurance drops me off, and I give him his guitar while. Some people begin to laugh watching Alex refuse to give Vylad his drumsticks until Laurance walks over to her and rips them out of her hands. Vylad and Laurance both go to their stops.

I smile and begin to wave to the crowd. I can see a few signs, a few along the lines of 'this is my first concert', or 'marry me' and then a name after it. I love when I'm able to read the signs, and I don't know why. Even a few signs have our band name on it.

Sometimes we begin a concert with a song right away and then begin to talk, but it's different today.

"Hellooooo everybody!" I begin to slowly roam around the front of the stage, and I listen to my heavy footsteps when my front foot carelessly falls against the floor. "Laurance has decided to be a baby today, so we've decided to start with a song that has Laurance in it. Isn't he just a child?"

"Uh, yeah, yeah," Laurance starts, and the lights darken slightly only for a few to shine in his direction. "When I was young, I fell in love. We used to hold hands, man, that was enough. Yeah. Then we grew up, started to touch, used to kiss underneath the light on the back of the bus. Yeah. Oh no, your daddy didn't like me much, and he didn't believe me when I said you were the one. Oh, every day she found a way out of the window to sneak out late."

The small spotlights change to a light green color, and they casually begin to roam the stage hitting us and deluding part of our appearance.

"She used to meet me on the Eastside in the city where the sun don't set. And every day you know that we ride through the backstreets of a blue Corvette. Baby, you know I just wanna leave tonight. We can go anywhere we want. Drive down to the coast, jump in the sea. Just take my hand and come with me, yeah," Laurance continues.

I grab my microphone from the stand and begin to walk to the middle of the stage. A light follows me while a few others continue to focus more on Laurance. However, there are still the other lights that are moving all over the stage.

Laurance sings the chorus, "We can do anything if we put our minds to it. Take your whole life then you put a line through it.
My love is yours if you're willing to take it. Give me your heart 'cause I ain't gonna break it. So come away, starting today. Start a new life, together in a different place. We know that love is how all these ideas came to be. So baby, run away with me."

My finger run once against the mic as I smile. I take a breath, and I start, "Seventeen and we got a dream to have a family, a house, and everything in between. And then, oh, suddenly we turned twenty-three. Now we got pressure for taking our life more seriously. We got our dead-end jobs and got bills to pay. Half our friends are now our enemies. Now I-I'm thinking back to when I was young. Back to the day when I was falling in love."

I walk over to Alex, and she sticks her tounge out at me ans walks away towards Vylad.

I walk up stage to the fans and stick my hand out to them. Once I, it's time for me to sing again. "He used to meet me on the Eastside. In the city where the sun don't set, and every day you know where we ride through the backstreets in a blue Corvette. And baby, you know I just wanna leave tonight. We can go anywhere we want, drive down to the coast, jump in the sea. Just take my hand and come with me, singing."

I feel Laurance hand jerk me towards him, and I glare at him. He laughs as we start to sing together.

"We can do anything if we put our minds to it. Take your whole life then you put a line through it. My love is yours if you're willing to take it. Give me your heart 'cause I ain't gonna break it. So come away, starting today
Start a new life, together in a different place. We know that love is how all these ideas came to be. So baby, run away with me."

I walk away from him waving my hand high in the air from left to right while I sing with Laurance still.

"Run away, now. Run away, now.
Run away, now. Run away, now.
Run away, now. Run away, now."

The song begins to end, and Laurance copies me after each of my lines.

"He used to meet me on the Eastside," I sing.

"She used to meet me on the Eastside."

I begin to walk back to center stage and place my mic back on the stand. It's already sweaty from my hand. "He used to meet me on the Eastside."

"She used to meet me on the Eastside in the city where the sun don't set," he finishes off with his infamous flirtatious wink.

"Laurance will you ever grow up?" Alex laughs, and I notice Laurance shoots his head towards her, glaring.

Vylad's chuckle is slightly picked up as he adds on, "No, we all know that he won't. But, he does need to stop flirting with Y/N when performing."

"True."

Laurance's voice cracks, "I was not!"

By the end of the performance we're kinda tired and chugging down water bottles.

Alex walks over and slings her arm over my shoulder. "That was amazing!" She says.

"No kidding, that was one of the best performances of Eastside yet!"

Laurance and Vylad walk over and Laurance wraps his arm around my waist as Alex slings her other arm around Vylad's shoulder. I stick out my tounge and go cross eyed, and they begin to laugh. That's when the camera guy rushes over and to take pictures and to record us being goofy as our families come running up backstage with their passes swaying side to side slightly.

The thrill of performing next gets old, I think as I watch the three begin to fool around.
