This was my first vampire pet story, and no other tale could quite compare to it.  Cannoness weaves a tale of vampires having the upperhand, and only the extremely rich are not turned into slaves and have to be killed off by the time they are 25. Even then though, they must donate blood on a yearly basis. 

Meet Khloe.  Khloe was born into a rich family, but given that her father attempted and failed for a revolution and tried to flee, Khloe had to witness the murder of her family and then land herself in a pet shop.

What made me immerse myself in Khloe's world, the writer Cannoness made everything realistic the way she spun the tale.  The way that people were treated with cruelty, the way they reacted, she was unafraid of writing the ugliness of this kind of reality, and she did not at any point try to pass it off as some kind of weird way of showing affection.  What was ugly, was ugly, and what was pure, was pure.

The story ends in a way that makes you feel hopeful for her, even as you have no idea what happens next.
