That Summer

Meet Rina. She's the typical unpopular girl in high school. Quiet. Shy. Has her own things to do in enjoying her own company. More ordinary than pretty in her opinion. She has a talent for gardening, and among the flowers is when she feels the most beautiful.
Rina has an older sister who can never do anything wrong. At least in their mother's eyes. And she's perfect, in both the mother's eyes and older sis thinks she's perfect as well. Rina can't wait to graduate high school and leave her home behind. At least then, big sis will no longer be able to blame Rina for all her wrongs. Puking in the bedroom, "Rina did it." Not even bothering to clean it up, "Rina's gross!"
Meat Deacon. He's a popular boy. But not in his own mind. His best friend just happens to be popular. And so do the guys that hang around him that Deacon doesn't really like. "They're jerks." Deacon really likes Rina. He was very impressed by a poem she wrote about flowers. He found her to be a girl of substance, something real. The other girls that flocked his way were extremely shallow and unkind. Deacon didn't like them even though his "friends" thought he should. Deacon also has a father that is an alcoholic, with parents on the verge of divorce. Deacon can't wait to graduate high school and leave.
Deacon and Rina have one summer left and one senior year before they graduate. They both get a job at a gardening shop. Deacon wants to win Rina over so bad. Will he? Find out in "That Summer."
