Chapter 6- Assembly

The next day, after Avery sat through another awful math class and wished science class was longer, she teleported home, dropped off her backpack, and went straight to Bailey's house. She then realized her mistake; Bailey's high school didn't get out as early as her own middle school. Mentally chastising herself for overlooking this, Avery teleported to Lucas's house instead. Lucas was home-schooled by his aunt during the day, so Avery figured that he would be home earlier than the others. Avery found him sitting on a beanbag chair in his room, reading a thick book.
"Ready to go?" asked Avery.
"This is going to be really fun!" exclaimed Lucas, marking his place in the book and setting it on the floor. Avery grinned and nodded, taking his hand.
"Go ahead and try to teleport back to my house," she said. "I'll help you if you need it, but I doubt you will." Lucas closed his eyes and took a deep breath, letting it out slowly, as he removed his Shard from his pocket. Repeating the process that he used to teleport the first time, he made the light from his Shard envelop them in light in one swift motion. As Avery and Lucas felt the sleeping sensation that came with teleporting, they appeared in the living room in Avery's house. John wasn't around to be startled this time, as he was down in the basement again, finishing up the cleaning.
"Go ahead and sit down," said Avery, smiling at Lucas. "You're a natural teleporter! So that's one thing we won't have to practice. I need to go get the others, but I'm not sure if Joey's home yet, and Bailey definitely isn't. That means we can't start training for a while, sorry! I'll go see if Joey gets home when I do." Avery glowed and vanished. Lucas awkwardly looked around, then sat down and got out his cellphone to play Angry Birds.
At Joey's house, Avery found that Joey was indeed home from school. He was sitting on his bed, surrounded by textbooks and papers strewn all over the bed. He wasn't working on any of the papers, however. He was staring into space, twirling a pencil in his hand, a thick textbook forgotten on his lap. As he saw Avery appear and sensed the temperature change, he jumped up from the bed, dropping the pencil and knocking the textbook on his lap and a bunch of papers to the floor.
"Finally, you're here! Let's go quickly, so I can get away from all this stupid homework!" he remarked excitedly. Avery shook her head at him.
"You're bringing your homework," she said, collecting the papers from his bed into a stack and putting them on top of the books. Joey groaned and stood up, picking up the excessive amount of homework roughly and tucking it under his arm.
"Wanna try teleporting again?" asked Avery. Nodding yes to her inquiry, Joey bent down to retrieve his Shard from a hiding spot under his bed. Avery guided him through the process again, and, although he did succeed in lighting up his Shard and making himself glow, was still unable to teleport. Avery had expected this, and transported them to her house herself. Instructing Joey to do his homework, Avery quickly walked downstairs to see how much progress her dad had done on the basement. He was unpacking some boxes full of what appeared to be disassembled exercise equipment, and looked up at her as she came down the stairs.
"Are the others here?" he asked. Avery nodded.
"Everyone but Bailey. She gets out of school later then everyone else, apparently." She looked around the fairly large basement and grinned. "Looks great, dad!" John shrugged modestly.
"I'm sure it's not the greatest secret training ground that anyone's ever had in their basement, but it'll serve its purpose." Avery hugged him.
"It's perfect."
Walking back upstairs, Avery checked the clock above the kitchen sink. It was 3:30. Avery expected that Bailey couldn't possibly have school any later than that, and teleported back to her house, appearing in the same place as always. Bailey wasn't in her room, but Avery heard someone coming up the stairs. Using her less preferred powers, Avery ran at the closet door, turned as if she was tackling it with her shoulder, and phased through it. Opening the sliding door just a crack, she saw that it was Bailey, not a parent or sibling, that was coming up the stairs. Sighing at how weird she was going to look coming out of Bailey's closet, Avery pushed the door open. Bailey gasped and grabbed a pair of scissors off her dresser, holding them in front of her like a knife. When she saw who it was, however, she relaxed and put the scissors down.
"Why are you in my closet?" she asked quizzically, setting her bulging backpack down on her bed. Avery laughed and shook her head at herself as she closed the closet door.
"I heard you coming up the stairs and I wasn't sure if it was you, or someone who I needed to hide from, so I hid in your closet." She paused. "Did you try to defend yourself with scissors?"
"How'd you open the door so quietly?" inquired Bailey, ignoring the question. "It always squeaks, and I didn't even hear you as I was coming up the stairs!" Avery smiled sneakily and stepped backwards, through the closet door. Bailey looked surprised for a second, then just seemed impressed. Avery came back out of the closet, not bothering to open the door this time. Then she groaned and rubbed her temples.
"Remind me never to show off that particular power again. Phasing without more momentum than that gives me a splitting headache," she complained. Bailey offered her some Ibuprofen, which she declined.
"Are we going to your house now?" asked Bailey. Avery nodded, and Bailey slung her backpack over one shoulder and took out her Shard, gripping it tightly and initiating the teleportation process. She was somewhere between Lucas and Joey in terms of skill level, not having as much trouble as Joey, but not picking it up as fast as Lucas. Avery had to help her along again with not leaving her limbs behind, but she transported them herself. Luckily, none of Bailey was left behind, but unfortunately, she teleported them right on top of the coffee table! Not used to the disorientation of teleporting, Bailey toppled off of the table sideways, almost hitting her head on the armchair. Avery caught her with telekinesis before she could give herself a concussion.
"Careful there! Guess we'll have to work on your placement," said Avery, trying and failing to hold back her laughter at Bailey's choice of location. Giving her a very annoyed fake smile, Bailey looked around.
"So, what are we going to be doing?"
"Learning how to use your powers!" replied Avery. Bailey looked at her incredulously.
"In your house? I just teleported onto the top of your table, I don't want to break anything in here!"
"My dad and I are more worried about you breaking your bones," replied Avery.
"Well that makes me feel SO much better." Avery laughed at Bailey's sarcasm.
"Let's go down to the basement." she gestured for Joey and Lucas, who had been pretending not to be laughing at the whole exchange, to come too. Joey sighed in relief and got up, leaving his homework all over the couch. Lucas pocketed his phone, and they followed the girls down into the basement.
John had transformed the basement into a safe training ground. There were mats covering the whole hardwood floor, and he was installing cushioning to the walls. Seeing them, Avery's dad waved a greeting at them with his power drill, then continued to install the cushioning.
"I don't have the punching bags up yet," he said, talking over the whine of the drill. "Figured you wouldn't need them until you can actually use all your powers." The kids nodded, and Avery asked when the room would be ready.
"This is the last piece, just wait a sec," replied her dad. He moved to a different corner of the padding, made sure the screwdriver bit on the drill was secure, then finished the job. As he stepped back, everyone cheered.
"Want me to test it?" asked Joey, ready to throw himself at the wall. John shrugged, and Joey did just that. The cushioning stayed securely on the wall, and Joey staggered back and fell on his butt.
"Guess it works!" exclaimed Lucas. Avery clapped her hands together excitedly.
"We can start training now! You guys ready?" she asked. Everyone gave their assent. John left the room and walked upstairs. Avery had the others line up against the wall. Surveying them, she smiled.
"This is gonna be awesome," she said.
