Chapter 1- Playing Hookie

In a small public middle school in a town of 12,000, Avery Hayes was sitting in her 3rd period math class. As her teacher droned on about the Pythagorean theorem, Avery checked her digital watch. It was 11:15, but that wasn't important. It was the other function of the watch that interested her. Pressing a combination of buttons, the digital watch screen changed from showing the time to showing a feed from a security camera. The camera was positioned to show the walkway in front of a house. A teenage girl was cautiously walking up to the front door, glancing over her shoulder as if she was worried she was being followed. As Avery reset her watch to show the time again, a snide voice addressed her.

"Avery, is the time on your watch really more interesting than what I'm teaching right now?" Answering truthfully, Avery replied in her most innocent voice,

"Yes." Mr. Johnson, the math teacher, scowled angrily as the class burst into laughter.

"If you would be so kind as to explain the basic principle of the Pythagorean theorem," Mr. Johnson said through clenched teeth. "I might decide you were paying attention and not send you to the principle's office." Avery's watch beeped a pattern of three notes, two high, then one low. Avery smiled.

"The square of the hypotenuse, which is the side opposite the right angle, is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides," she replied evenly. Seeing how Mr. Johnson's mouth dropped open, she couldn't help adding,

"Did you not know that? Pretty cool, I know."

"YOUNG LADY, YOU MARCH YOURSELF DOWN TO THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE RIGHT THIS INSTANT!" shouted her livid math teacher, his face turning beet red. Avery gathered her things, walked over to the door leading to the hallway, and turned back towards her classmates, giving them a military-style salute. They started to applaud her, but stopped after Mr. Johnson's anger was directed at them. Walking out the door, Avery smiled at what had just happened and looked at her watch again, which displayed a screen with a message on it. The screen read:

YOUR TRIANGLES CAN WAIT. THIS IS IMPORTANT. Grumbling to herself about people who text in all caps, Avery walked purposefully down the hall towards the office. As she walked, she put her hand into the pocket of her jacket. Avery's eyes lit up green like a cat's, and she vanished.
