Prologue

It is a mess of noise, metal, oil, and blood. The world spins around, landing upside down with an ominous creak. Somewhere a steady drip ... drip... drip.. can be hear along with the distant shouts of others.

Seatbelts are all that hold the fragile couple, pressing their limp bodies back into their chairs. He has a bad head wound blanketing his left temple and a piece of the windshield is lodged into her chest, going all the way through to the cushion behind her. Perhaps if the belt were removed she would still not fall.

The stillness is different from only a moment ago. Just before the car had swerved to avoid the partygoers and gone off the road, the couple had been chatting happily. They talked mostly about the teen stretched out across the back seat sleeping. Everything had just settled down and life was finally looking up. But in only an instant so much of that has been taken

Now only the teen's chest still rises and falls, an unsteady, broken reminder that he still lives, but only just. His body is half spilled from the car, his shoulders, arms, and head cushioned slightly by grass, the rest of him sprawled across the ceiling of the car. There are glass shards of all sizes imbedded in his skin and a decent amount of blood pools under and through his hair.

O – O – O – O – O – O – O

One week.

That's how much time passes before a nurse opens the door to the lonely hospital room to find the black haired 17 year old sitting up, one hand wrapped protectively around his broken ribs. He's decorated in pristine white bandages, one standing out more than the rest, the one encircling his head.

His sea green eyes meet her brown. They're wrought with confusion and pain.

"Hello," she says as she quietly closes the door and crosses over to him, a wary smile on her face. "It's good to see you awake."

His eyebrows furrow, something in the action indicating a headache, and looks around the room. "Where am I?"

"You're in the hospital. There was a bad car accident," she mentions quietly. She watches him, searching for any sign of recognition, but there is none. He only seems more confused. "What.... well, what do you remember?"

He shoulders rise and drop in a defeated shrug. "I don't."

She deflates. Sighing, the young nurse perches on the edge of bed. "I suppose that's to be expected. You have quite the head injury and from the reports you were sleeping when the accident occurred. Can you tell me exactly what you can remember?"

He looks away from her, out the window towards the large gray building next door.  His expression is pained and he doesn't seem to want to say. If she looks closer, she can see a red flush to his cheeks. Is he embarrassed?

"Percy?" she prompts, having read over his files.

This gets a response. His head whips around and he stares at her with wide eyes. "Is that it?"

She gives him a curious look. "Is that what?"

"My name. Is that my name?" His voice is hopeful. Her mouth forms an 'O' as she stares at him in shock. However he doesn't seem to notice and continues to speak. "I mean, when I woke up.... well I didn't- I still don't – remember anything. It's just a large blank. Nothing's there and it's just... one... big...blank."

Her stomach plummets. Oh this isn't good.
