Injury
His knees were brought up to his chest,
Face buried deep in his clothes.
And as I called
He looked up at me
With eyes bright red and hurt.
Before I could ask what was wrong he ran off,
And I swear, as he crossed the street,
I had noticed a car beep and blink as it screeched,
But it stopped far too late to save him.
I cried out, sprinting fast,
Scared to see streams of red,
But the blood rolled in waves down the road.
A scream escaped my lips
As I glared at the ground,
Frightened to lift my eyes and to see...
Body plastered across the asphalt.
Clothes torn and covered in blood.
Eyes closed shut, barely breathing,
Heavily heaving.
But still --
It was enough.
Sirens rang and an ambulance raced,
Blue and red flashing brightly and quick.
I held on to his hand as we left to the hospital,
Hearing only his breathing weave
Into my ears.
