Chapter Sixteen

Joey's POV

Well I guess we are doing this. Susanna is sitting next to me in the passenger seat of my car a tired smile on her face. "You okay, Sus?" I ask as we pull up to a stop light on the way to pick up the kids. I wrap my hand in hers, and her smile grows a bit.

"I...I'm fine." She finally manages to get out through the massive yawn. She looks at me and brighten just a little. "The festival in Paducah is going to be fun."

"You've been up with those papers too much lately. How much sleep have you even got lately?" I ask gently. I worry about her sometimes, ever since her accident back in early months of this year.

Susanna closes her eyes for a few seconds and takes a few deep breaths, letting them out slow and easy. The light turns green and I turn my eyes back to the road. As we continue down the road she speaks up, "You know you are cute when you worry." I know without even looking at her she has a teasing grin on her face.

"That's cute of you, Stephens." I laugh dryly. Before our banter can continue we reach the place where L.A. said she would meet us today when she finally agreed. I park the car but she must still be rounding up her stuff, because she's not outside waiting for us. Susanna and I both grow still and quiet as we look at the building. It's really run down and rough looking. No one should be living here.

I hear Susanna's voice get strength as she says, "I'm doing the right thing Joey. A few sleepless nights are worth it."

Before I can answer her, L.A. steps outside a satchel thrown over her shoulder. This girl is cracking I can see it every time me, Sus, and the guys meet up with her. She actually smiles more, in the last several weeks. She's growing confident too, I notice she's took careful care with her appearance today. For a certain young photographer is my guess.

I grin, today is going to be a blast. I'm anxious to see what God has in store for us today.
