✶ ☾ ✶
Delilah
Delilah's apartment buzzed with a chaotic energy, sunlight spilling through the windows like liquid gold. She ran across the living room, past the coffee table, where a stack of art materials teetered on the edge. At her feet, Aryton, her ferret, launched himself into the air, a blur of brown and white fur that sent her into a fit of giggles. Each time she sidestepped him, he spun around, his tiny limbs dancing across the hardwood floor, urging her to play along in this impromptu game of tag.
With her laptop bag slipping from her shoulder, she clutched a tower of files, their edges crinkling like whispers of stories untold. A grandfather clock chimed every second, a sobering reminder that time was passing by. The smell of fresh coffee calmed her in the commotion.
Delilah straightened, breathed deeply, and felt determined. Today was centered on maintaining focus, and Rita's insults weren't going to diminish her enthusiasm.
Her eyes sparkled as she sifted through the documents, her fingers dancing over the pages like a seasoned detective on a thrilling quest. She turned the pages with a mischievous grin, her eyes wide with anticipation.
"A brooch?" she said, glancing at the nearby note that identified it as a 'pin.' Every term was like a sneaky little hint in this brain-boggling riddle.
Delilah scrawled a brief note in her notepad, which echoed in the silent room. Each new relic that may reveal a historical narrative was like finding a treasure. The excitement of discovering the finest antiques for Aiden King sparked her curiosity, as though she were piecing together a grand puzzle.
Despite the allegations surrounding the owner and his male entourage, Delilah conducted her search with diligence, her instincts tinged with uncertainty; however, nothing in the shadows pointed to a connection between any of them and the mafia. The men were undeniably unorthodox, often keeping to their own world. Everything was in order regarding their performance at the company.
Delilah let out a deep breath, her shoulders dropping as she looked out the window. Her heart sank as Aiden's words reverberated in her mind, a painful reminder of the moment she had become a silent observer, hidden under the dim light while he spoke to his friend. She hadn't anticipated a relationship with him, but the sting of rejection lingered, a bitter reminder that he saw her as nothing more than a nuisance.
Aryton nestled against her leg, his soft fur a comforting warmth. She kneeled beside him and massaged his fluffy stomach, and he sighed, eyes closed. In those quiet moments, the world outside faded, leaving just the two of them in their cocoon of companionship.
Over the past few weeks, her only true companion has been her animal friend. After long, grueling days of wanting to hide from her sad circumstances, Aryton had shared her solitude─his gentle presence a balm to her weary soul. As she caressed him, a twinge of homesickness tugged at her heart; home seemed like a faraway memory, but his company made the aching tolerable.
Most days, the frigid air clawed at her exposed skin, suspending every breath in the brilliant sunshine like a ghost yearning for recognition. Her cheeks tingled with the cold, and each breath escaped in gentle, swirling wisps that danced through the frigid atmosphere.
Her thoughts drifted back to the moment she first met Phoebe, a smile creeping onto her face as the memory unfolded. After the coffee incident, Delilah still couldn't get rid of the thought of the woman who seemed composed. Phoebe moved with an effortless grace and a sophistication that seemed to be beyond Delilah's reach.
Rita's unspoken conflicts simmered beneath the surface, as her furrowed brow and clenched fists revealed them. She'd glare at Phoebe and Delilah, her disdain palpable in the air between them. As Delilah saw it, Rita couldn't fight Phoebe since her position was secure.
Instead, the spiteful lady refused to keep any hazelnut creamer in sight. Delilah saw Rita take the container from the break area and return to her desk. She was too self-centered to care about other people.
Delilah groaned and clenched her fists, her jaw tightening as she took a deep breath, determination flashing in her eyes. She would continue on, regardless of the obstacles at the office. She envisioned herself navigating the job, impressing her peers, and gaining a place of respect.
Her thoughts raced as she watched the clouds pass. She let out a breath, her shoulders drooping as if the burdens of the world beared down on her.
She anticipated confronting Aiden and sharing her feelings. Steering clear of him was an effortless endeavor, but if she intended to remain within his company, facing him was an inevitable challenge on the horizon.
With a deep breath, she straightened her posture, a steely resolve flickering in her eyes. Aiden's remarks, which had once pierced her like a bee sting, now reflected off her like raindrops on a smooth surface. Silently, she vowed to restore her tranquility, allowing his words to fade away and replace them with a renewed confidence.
Aryton nestled closer, his soft fur brushing against her arm, the gentle rise and fall of his tiny body offering an unspoken comfort. She glanced down, her lips twitching into a faint smile despite the turmoil swirling in her mind.
"There's no need for concern," she reassured him, her voice steady but laced with an edge of vulnerability. "Butthead cannot jerk me around."
Her ferret let out a gentle sigh, pressing his nose against her fingers, his eyes glimmering with a deep understanding, as if he grasped the gravity of her resolve.
She took a big breath and said, "Even if he's the sexiest guy on the earth." A tinge of bittersweetness permeated her words, conveying the conflict between her emotions and her rational self. Always by her side, Aryton was a constant reminder that she had support throughout her struggle.
Delilah closed her fingers around her warm mug, allowing the gentle heat to seep into her hands as the delicious fragrance of cinnamon latte curled up to welcome her. Just as she hopped up and was about to take a step, a flash of fur swooped by her ankles. She stumbled forward, her drink on the edge of spilling everywhere.
In an instant, the drink slipped through her fingers, scattering creamy brown splashes across her white blouse, as the warmth seeped into the fabric. The ferret scurried away, and Delilah glanced down, a frown creasing her brow as her fingertips brushed over the spreading stain, eager to erase the evidence of her misfortune.
"Not this shirt," she groaned.
With her pulse pounding, Delilah stood before the mirror, pulling at her blouse to keep the ominous stain from seeping into her bra. With deft fingers, she unbuttoned the fabric and tossed it into the washing basket, its fate sealed. She had no time to prepare; her workload was imminent, and annoyance permeated her nerves.
She flung open her closet door, clothes spilling out like secrets, but only one garment caught her eye. The vibrant red fleece dress swayed on its hanger, catching the light, whispering tales of bold adventures. She hesitated, eyeing its snug fit, aware of her curves. Jeans were out of the question, and the idea of this made her gag. Today would require a level of confidence she wasn't sure she possessed.
Delilah looked at the clock, her pulse beating as the minute hand approached the hour. A heavy sigh escaped her lips as she tossed her slacks aside, her fingers grazing the silky fabric of the dress that hung in her closet like a whisper of elegance.
She hesitated, recalling Liz's radiant smile from last year, urging Delilah to embrace her curves. But her cousin's voice echoed in her mind─"Open yourself up more!"─and Delilah shook her head, dismissing the memory. However, when she slid into the dress, the velvety fabric embraced her shape, and she stood before the mirror, her reflection taking her by surprise.
Her sleek dress and red flats went well together, and the loose sarong highlighted her waist. As Delilah whipped her hair into an unruly bun with a flurry of fingers, she suddenly felt a surge of self-assurance.
Her lips curved into a smile; she seemed sophisticated, but more importantly, she felt genuine.
She swung her purse off the couch, its soft leather cradling her fingers as she reached down to give Aryton a gentle scratch behind his ears. His tiny body wiggled with delight, and she couldn't help but chuckle at his playful antics.
"I'll be home soon, Ari," she said, her voice warm with affection, a smile lighting up her face as she glanced back at him.
With a determined sigh, Delilah took a few confident strides toward the front but paused for a moment, steeling herself. She shivered when the frigid wind hit her cheeks and stole her breath as she opened the heavy door.
She strode down the glistening sidewalk, her shoes crunching against the icy remnants that shimmered under the pale winter sun.
A gentle breeze played with her hair, yet she remained unfazed; a bright smile illuminated her face, casting warmth over the cool air surrounding her. She waved at a few strangers, her laughter ringing out like a melody.
Delilah paused when she reached a curve, just managing to steer clear of the gap where a construction crew was busy at work.
"You hurt?" a voice called out, concern threading through the air.
Delilah hesitated before moving further, her foot slipping on the uneven, jagged sidewalk near her. She strolled along the sidewalk on the other side, her foot catching on a loose slab that shifted beneath her shoe. Luck has slipped away.
Just as she felt gravity pull her, two strong arms wrapped around her waist, steadying her before she could react.
The warmth of Aiden's embrace enveloped her, an unspoken connection crackling in the air as they exchanged knowing glances, their lips curving into subtle smiles. She concentrated on the ground, conscious of his proximity, listening to her heartbeat. His button-up shirt strained against his muscular arms, a testament to his strength.
His gaze flicked to her, concern shadowing his features. "Are you okay, Delilah?"
Her pulse raced, her eyes riveted to the ground, and her fingers anxiously tickled her shirt hem. She felt the air's thickness and strain, as if it were trying to engulf her.
Aiden's glare was strong, wrapping around her with a noticeable sense of disappointment and frustration. Her mind replayed the echoes of past interactions, each one a vivid scene of her mistakes, while he stood by, the reluctant hero in her chaotic story. Her stomach clenched, creating a tight knot as she avoided looking at him, knowing his eyes carried a judgment she wasn't ready to face.
"Sorry," she mumbled, her gaze flickering to the construction crew, avoiding the heat of Aiden's stare. Bumping into him again seemed like a childish game.
His hands gripped her arms, steadying her as she stumbled back to her feet. Delilah's heart raced as she met his eyes, expecting to see fury blazing back at her. Instead, he froze, shock transforming into a sharp outburst.
"What the hell are you doing?" His voice sliced through the commotion of hammers and drills.
Delilah winced, bracing for the storm she feared was coming. "I know I messed up," she said, the weight of dread sinking into her chest. "I should've been watching─"
"Put up the damn warning sign. Someone will die because of you."
Her breath caught, eyes wide as she darted between Aiden's intense tone and the construction crew, one worker shifting his weight as he locked eyes with her, the sign dangling in his hands.
She looked around, her pulse pounding, but a sense of comfort washed over her when she realized Aiden wasn't angry with her for wandering around a construction zone. The reckless workers were the target of his attitude.
"You're sure you're fine?" His hand rested gently on her shoulder, radiating warmth.
Delilah nodded, her thoughts swirling in silence. Perhaps today was a day of complete reversal? Were these relationships created in a better environment? This was the sole fragile yet persistent reasoning within her mind.
Her gaze drifted to the scaffold, her voice barely a whisper. "I'm good. I promise."
His gaze lingered on her, his deep brown eyes scanning her from the tips of her styled hair to the hem of her chic dress. A flicker of something─attraction, perhaps?─danced across his features. Her heart bounced, unsure if it was embarrassment or excitement. Was he noticing her bold change, or was he caught in the web of thoughts about her mischievous reputation at the company?
Just then, a voice sliced through the charged silence. "Aiden!"
She turned to see Merrick striding toward them, waving like a lifeline in turbulent waters.
"Several buyers are on the phone for you," he explained, his eyes darting between their clasped hands and Delilah's flushed cheeks.
She smiled as Aiden's fingertips receded from her shoulder, leaving an electric pulse. "I will see you both inside," she murmured, her heart fluttering, but the moment shattered when a shriek of metal against metal drew her attention and sent her stomach plummeting.
A teenage girl walking her white poodle lay on the shattered asphalt, her dog whimpering and her eyes wide with fear. Dark crimson seeped into the jagged pavement, a stark contrast against the gray. Delilah knelt beside her, hands trembling but steadying as she assessed the injury. A distant siren wailed, but all Delilah could hear was her own heartbeat, heavy and urgent.
"Hey," Delilah murmured, brushing a trembling finger against the girl's pale lips, silencing the gurgled protests that escaped her throat. "Hold on for me, okay?"
"A truck... hit me," the girl murmured. "My... body hurts."
"I know, but I need you to stay strong. Okay?"
Glancing up, Delilah caught Aiden's anxious silhouette, his voice urgent as he relayed their location on the phone, the tension in his brow deepening with every passing second. She felt the fragile grip of the girl's icy hand intertwining with her own; the warmth of Delilah's reassurance contrasted against the chill creeping into their surroundings.
Onlookers gathered, but kept their distance as traffic grew.
"Keep your eyes open for me," Delilah whispered, her heart pounding as she squeezed back, hoping to transfer strength as sirens wailed in the distance. "Hold on, okay?"
"I don't want to..." The girl choked out her words, blood spilling out. "Die."
A second later, the dog barked, drawing everyone's attention. Delilah's lips quivered, a fragile tremor that betrayed her composure, as a single tear traced a delicate path down her cheek, disappearing into her wispy hair. The weight of unfulfilled dreams pressed against her chest; this girl was barely eighteen, yet the world felt like a heavy shroud. Images of a family flashed in Delilah's mind─faces the girl longed to see, siblings whose laughter echoed in her thoughts.
As she held her tight, Delilah's heart beat with a fierce determination. "Fight. Please, just fight it."
The girl placed her fingers around Delilah's, a gentle touch that conveyed a powerful message.
The girl's voice trembled as she declared, "I can't feel... my toes."
"I'm staying right here," Delilah replied, holding her hand. "Help is coming."
The teenager's breaths came in shallow gasps, each one a struggle against the weight of despair closing in around them. Crimson seeped through her skin, a silent testament to the chaos within.
Delilah's heart ached, the burden of impending loss resting upon her. She could feel the girl's fragile heartbeat fading, each pulse a reminder of the fleeting moments they shared. Delilah embraced her in a silent hug, treasuring each heartbeat like a precious secret.
"Focus on something happy," Delilah whispered, her voice quivering as tears shimmered in her eyes. "What do you call your dog?"
The girl looked at the dog, its barks resonating through the narrow alley, and a faint smile appeared on her lips. She exhaled, her eyes glimmering as she murmured, "Snow, just like in Snow White."
Delilah's lips curled into a smile, her gaze fixed on her. "Is she the only one you have?"
The girl nodded, her limbs quaking, a distinct indication of her deteriorating health. "Do you have a... dog?" she whispered.
Delilah smiled and shook her head. "I don't have any dogs, but I do have a pet ferret. I named him Aryton, after one of my favorite fantasy heroes."
After a smile, the girl relaxed. The world around them faded, slipping into the shadows. The sounds gradually diminished to a soft murmur. Time paused, a cocoon closing around them as Delilah locked eyes with her, whose grin lit up the space, sparking a fading light she couldn't ignore.
"Imagine your family waiting for you," Delilah said, her heart aching at the sight of the girl's face, pale yet serene. "They're counting on you to come back to them, to hold them close, and feel your love surrounding them." She watched as a single tear escaped the girl's closed eyes, tracing a path down her cheek, a silent testament to the bond they shared. "Each of us plays a unique role in this beautiful tapestry of life. They need you─just as you need them."
Delilah felt the warmth of her breath as it settled into a regular rhythm, words flowing like a gentle stream. A familiar cadence danced on her tongue, each phrase echoing in her mind like a cherished lullaby from her childhood. The weight of unspoken thoughts lifted every syllable. An invisible force seemed to drive her, prompting her to reveal a truth that had been hidden for so long. The urgency surged through her veins, sparking a sense of duty that was equally thrilling and daunting.
The girl's breathing grew shallow.
The wail of sirens echoed, a haunting reminder of urgency that would remain distant as traffic accumulated. Delilah pressed her palm against the girl's cold skin, feeling her life slip away like a dying flame. A shiver coursed through them both when the girl exhaled, the air thick with finality. She looked up at Aiden, her vision blurred by tears that cascaded down her cheeks like a storm.
At that moment, a celestial light radiating from Delilah surrounded them, warm and luminous.
"You did everything you could," he whispered, his hand resting gently on her shoulder, grounding her in the moment of loss. "She's free now."
